A lot of rumors popping in the comment sections. Here's another one:
- SCC, Expect
big changes next week. Superintendent is pissed off. No more outer vest
cover!! Your bullet proof vest will be worn under the uniform shirt, no
more cargo pants, or baseball caps. No more gym shoes, only shoes that
you can shine. Duty belt will be the leather one, no more nylon duty
belts.
Going back to the old school uniform. The way we left the academy is how the Sup wants us to to look on the streets.
Either someone is bored or someone in charge is getting some heat from City Hall.
And before anyone starts whining about posting unverified rumors:
- we said, almost from the first ever post, that Rumor Central was a thing here;
- we've always used rumors that sound plausible as fodder for posts;
- it's the holiday weekend and what else have we got?
Besides, many of the rumors end up being true in one form or another. Many times, the publication of rumors actually stopped stupid ideas from coming to fruition.

Terrible idea if actually true. Many phone calls will need to be sent back to patrol because the lowly beat officers will hit the medical or go on IOD stemming from hip injuries. The vest carrier is God send.

When you have a superintendent who wore sweatpants to work as a gym teacher for majority of his career, it only makes sense that he lacks true vision and ideas as a leader.
When you don’t have a significant plan, you get hung-up on insignificant details.
While I agree that our lack of consistency in uniforms is a problem- just enforce the uniform codes that are on the books. The molle vest cover is great for officers from a functionality viewpoint. Though I have heard rumblings in the past that the supe hates it and prefers vests under the shirt.
If anything, they should authorize the polo shirts as a uniform option.
Never happen, way too many of these sergeants, lieutenants, and captains want to be everyone’s friend. It really starts with the sergeants that are way too afraid of a blue shirt complaining on them.

I believe this to just be a rumor. However, many Officers lately have been caught in the spotlight and are just outright embarrassing, to say the least. I understand that we have many uniform combinations, but things are completely out of hand now. I don't know if the crocs picture is real or photoshopped, but if it's genuine, that Officer is an idiot and should have been sent home.
Furthermore, if the Superintendent orders drastic changes, it is the fault of every Officer who continually comes to work dressed like shit, has stupid beards, wears 5.11 pants, doesn't wear a uniform shirt under the pullover, etc. This is a Police Department and deviating from the uniform doesn't win anyone a fashion show prize. Guys have to refrain from being douchebags and hand jobs while the women have to grow the fuck up.
Larry I guess is buying new vests for all to fit under our shirts and the cargos have changed already nonsense

I have a 32 inch waist, let me know which pieces of equipment I'm supposed to wear on the rear of my belt and are least important so I can avoid the spinal injury and take as few days as possible for not having ___equipment. IFAK, taser, OC Spray, ASP or Baton, extra cuffs, etc. Being a slob is one thing...let me know which one is least important.
And by the way this post is bullshit. A bunch of CPD officers wearing magnetic BWCs on their shirt...that will go well when they're ripped off and juries come to trial.

Great news! CPD looks like the confederate army of 1863. No uniform at all.
City is up for grabs and this is what it comes down to? Uniform appearance? They take away our overtime and are writing up officers at an alarming rate, but this is what matters. It’s sad that we as a department can’t come together and just stop all forms of proactive police work. You’re losing your troops Snelling.
Here’s a few things I heard are going down soon (multiple verified inside sources):
After much deliberation among the exempts come the next calendar year, all promotions will be meritorious and will be personally vetted by the mayors office to see if they meet diversity standards. Community violence interrupters will also oversee the gang unit to ensure the maximum level of cohesion between them and CPD. The narcotics unit will take a more proactive approach to drugs and begin handing out clean needles, test kits, and Homan Square will become a safe injection site. Mayors protective detail will quadruple in size, and annual pistol qual will be replaced with annual deescalation qual.

Only change should be dropping the baby blue work shirt for a navy blue like K9. Save the baby blues for the dress blue. Navy would look cleaner and there are more options already produced for better weather appropriate shirts.
Half truths here. Supe was pissed at some of the protests and events he was at seeing tac teams who were in “uniform”. Non regulation shoes, black or blue tee shirts, gym shoes with colors in them and non CPD baseball hats. He’s not anti vest carrier but he is anti having ALL of the tools on the vest carrier and only your gun on your belt. He is working with R and D for a tac uniform that should be picked out by September and no, the city will not buy them because it’s 4th watch and if you want 4th watch then you buy the new uniform.
What about braids and dreadlocks? Or are we going back to old school short haircuts again? Does the military allow dreads and braids? If not, they should. Who needs regulations anyway.
If we can’t act like we’re old school then why play the part? I don’t believe this at all. Way too far fetched and impractical. Where would we put our LEMART kits at ? Or our extra pair of cuffs ? Taser mags gun cuffs baton maybe LEMART kit not enough room for everything. Wish they would worry about things that actually matter.

Just last week during pride disaster the cameras picked up some strange assortment of CPD uniforms being worn in broad daylight. Not to mention the Hair cut and face hair standards have just disappeared. So yes it’s time to get a shine on that leather and tie up that hair so a Uniformed Hat fits on your head. Let’s get rid of the bling ear rings. And start looking like a police force and not a hooligan sailors on leave. Remember you knew when you took the job you were not going to be comfortable? Remember our Superintendent wears his hat even indoors?

Won't happen ..I break out in a rash when I wear my vest under my shirt for long periods of time. Being pressed against my body for such a long period of time vs being able to breath better with an outer vest cover, causes heat bumps on my chest.. kind of like razor bumps when I shave, thus why I look like a caveman who just woke up with my out of control facial hair. When I was hired I had the option to wear my vest inside or outside my shirt, you cant change the rules on me now.

No cargos .. where am I gonna keep my chew now? Speak of that, they need to do away with plain clothes tac teams .. they are useless... most summer months they are in uniform... do their 1 bagger arrest numbers decline due to being in uniform?? No... so whats the point? Due away with that prior to the 00s concept.. its useless and doesn't help in stopping crime. Prior to 00s the objective was to arrest those that broke the law housing them in an effort to change their behavior.... now that concept has gone away.

Outer vest covers, athletic shoes, nylon belts were huge improvements from when I came on in the mid 80s. Nobody wore their vest because it was really uncomfortable under the shirt. Dumb move if they get rid of these items. Now the baseball caps? They do look stupid. I was a policeman, not a 3rd baseman.

With the coming order that you MUST carry you LEMART kit, the outer vest carries are going nowhere.

As always, seeing is believing in the CPD. I think the uniform issue has gone too far down the road to ever have a real change. The rank and file would revolt. But, that said, I travel the country and see police in other urban areas. I have to say that overall, the members of CPD are the most raggedy ass department that I have seen. A mix of uniforms, ill fitting, long beards and unshaven, earrings, ( Crocs as recently posted). The outer vests were authorized to encourage officers to wear their vests, but, it has gotten out of hand. They look like carpenters tool belts with all manner of things hanging and attached. To me, a retired member of CPD, it is an embarrassment and the topic of conversation among officers of other departments. As the old saying goes, " Does Your Appearance Command Respect ". When you dress and look like an unprofessional slob, you tend to act like one. Good Luck if this can be corrected, but I seriously doubt it. Just another sign of a once great police department on the decline.

They need to enforce hair standards! All the shit I see is ridiculous, and that goes for ALL genders! The nails and jewelry is also out of control. Some people need to wash their uniforms and learn how to use an iron. While we're at it...most need to drop some damn weight! And I'm just talking about the bosses :) LOL
She was never on the street did a uniform adjustment out of roll call from what I heard but whoever took the pic got in trouble for it. Can’t imagine anyone that damn stupid to be out there in crocs working!!
As a retired old CPD, 82-3A, the photo of the young female CPD in her “clogs” was just ridiculous. And NO- I actually am not referring to the “clogs”. Just how much equipment is needed / required to carry on one’s chest these days? And where are coppers supposed to put all these items if not for vest pockets or cargo pants pockets?

It starts at the top. Sun-Times photo on-line from the Chgo Ave shooting shows a boss lifting up the crime tape. No vest and carrying a cup of coffee. Driver has his vest on.

Does CPD have a rule stating the length of a beard permitted for officers who have a bump card. Some of these look like PO’s wanting to look like Delta Force Operators. I have to say today’s SWAT Team gives me a sense of pride as a former PO. Im also proud today’s CPD SWAT.Operators command respect and look like the real police. Yesterday’s HBT did not have a solid image or portrayed any deep professionalism. I came on the job in class 86-4 and I am very amazed at all the gear today’s officer has to carry. With respect to the department issued cellphone, what is its purpose? Be safe out there!

This military General should know Shiraq deployment requires practical tactical uniforns. Looking like Constables on the Canadian border will increase crime even though we will look pretty for the few remaining tourists. Very BAD decision. All these uniform variations came from Phat Phill He was the comfort superintendent. Naturally, it got out of control. 9 cops can stand on a street corner all in a different uniform, but all would be in compliance.
I'll say one thing: When you go to a Marine Corps base like Pendleton EVERY Marine looks like a stud because of uniform regs... Appearance counts!
So the City will pay for all the new gear?? I mean, uniform leather that will last more than 3 months ain't cheap! And if it's mandatory, not optional, the Union will say "pay for it". But CPD uniforms have looked un-uniform for years. I mean, either have a Class A dress uniform for the appropriate times, and go Class B for patrol use. There's better street uniform gear than 5.11's that looks more professional. Right now it's a mix and match assortment of clothing and gear that doesn't command respect.

No belt keepers, weapon way too far back. Sgts and Lt’s look even worse. I welcome some kind of change with our uniforms. Each district should have an Inspector, that’s a civilian like COPA. I bet cops would get the message.
I’m retired and was working a side gig at the Hilton and saw a Sgt and PO in uniform, walk in to go eat. The Sgt’s hair was past his collar, no belt keepers and looked like trash. The PO was wearing a Bulls hat facing backwards. So for all of you getting pissed off about switching to the academy uniform that you graduated the academy, ask yourselves why do you not hold those around you accountable? I may be retired but in my time, we never looked so sloppy. Good job Sup, make the changes.

Wrong, if the Dept. requires it, they have to supply first issue to existing tac officers. Subsequent officers assigned to tac would be required to purchase the uniform, that's why you get an allowance.
Just keep you're uniform shirts in the glove compartment of your personal car like I used to do before I retired.

R&D would not be involved since the uniform requirement is not really a change. The uniform requirement that the Superintendent is ordering is already in the GO. Supt. can order us to wear the vest under our shirt. FOP doesn’t have a dog in this fight. An inspection was conducted before we left the academy and it didn’t include a molle vest. We had to wear the vest under our shirt and our duty belt was the Boston leather. We’re screwed contractually. Everyone had a vest that fit under their shirt. Sucks but I don’t think FOP can help us. It’s not just Snelling. Mayor doesn’t like us looking like the military either. This was already in the works before Croc girl.

Superintendent’s uniform requirement does NOT fall under first issue as far as our contract goes.This version is already a required uniform like our dress uniform. Superintendent holds the power to tell us what uniform to wear for the day and there’s nothing we can say or do about it.The only problem is the dept does not have enough magnetic holders for BWC but that can change in a flash.If you paid for your own best carrier that was your decision.The dept will not reimburse you for it because of the clothing allowance.

If this is true it will kill any morale and faith in snelling that may remain. McCarthy tried this bullshit too and was rejected shortly after implementing it. I can see the brass doing this for nascar or a big event but not permanently.
Recent classes were inspected with out covers that could be molle or the 2 pocket. Covers are big business for the Uniform stores, they aren’t going anywhere.
J$G had some nice shirts for the Cook co guys. Polo style that looked much more comfortable to wear in during the dog days of summer.

The department doesn’t require it for everyone… only those that volunteer for 4th watch.. nobody is forced to do anything so the city does not have to buy it if you volunteer to work 4th watch.. If you don’t want to wear it or buy it, then you don’t have to you just go back to the watch. Also, since it’s voluntary you are already given a uniform check.. if it was mandatory citywide for all no matter what then yes, you are correct, but in this case of voluntary 4th watch the city does not have to pay for it.
If they take the vest away I’m quitting CPD and going to a burb. Hated wearing my vest under my shirt in the academy. It caused a rash and I was miserable. Lots of other places to be the police without the aggravation. Beards and vests allowed. So blow me.

Sergeants are suppose to take care of uniform infractions BUT they also look like shit! Just take a look at the Sgts. CPD is a lost cause. No way to fix this uniform problem. Under Armour was founded by University Of Maryland football player Kevin Plank who was tired of changing his soaking wet cotton T-shirts while practicing in the muggy heat of Maryland.
Who are we kidding? 35th street should be happy that we show up. That’s my attitude as a Sgt. I don’t care what the troops wear. They could show up with their underwear on their heads and I’ll just smile. Not my problem. All I care is they answer their calls and don’t give me any extra work to do. 35th street should hire more inspectors if they want us to look sharp. Not my job, not my problem.

I came on 28 yrs ago, a lot and I mean a lot of officers especially seriously fat officers looked like shit then, probably got two more years to go and nothing has changed. The outside molle covers were the best thing they aloud us to put on. And yes there was a lot of officers with fucked up backs and hip problems back then because of all the shit we had to wear around our leather duty belts. Wait till you turn 50 + and everything is going to hurt busters, don't care how much you still work out.

I haven’t ironed a uniform since I left the academy five years ago. My pants and shirts have holes in them. I don’t ever use shoe polish. I just style my hair and make sure my sunglasses look good. I do shake out my vest cover for crumbs from all the snacks I eat. I’m not buying a new vest because that’s BS that the vest expires after five years. My clothing allowance is used for my sports betting and I’m up 7k. Life is good. CPD is what you make of it, don’t stress and worry about the little things.

It's not the weight it's the space. Molle gear takes it off the belt and provides more space. We should probably be carrying more ammo as well. So if we have to carry all this gear you can't do that without cargo pants and a chest rig dumbazz.

As a Marine, and a Retired CPD member. No CPD member will ever look as good as a United States Marine in any Uniform. Even on their worst day, a Marine has Respect for the Uniform……you do not see that in CPD.

Right, you MUST have a helmet… with that said I PAID for my first issue helmet. The CITY paid for the new ones because everyone had to have it. Not everyone is 4th watch. It’s like being a recruit, you have to buy all your own equipment, even your gun.. why??? Because you’re a recruit and have no choice. Just like 4th watch, you don’t have a choice…. Actually you do, buy it OR go back to the watch and you won’t have to buy it. If you don’t buy it and you go back to the watch, 10 other kids will be willing to buy it and take your spot… you’re not that important.
