Someone Think of the Children!

Because the Chicago Public Schools aren't:

  • Chicago Public Schools has decided to eliminate crossing guard service at 33 intersections in Chicago. Eleven of those are in the South Side 19th Ward, the local alderman said.

CPS said 15 out of 30 intersections were affected.

Alderman Matt O'Shea says he was blindsided by cuts he calls drastic and unsafe in his ward's school communities. "That's unconscionable, to go more than three days now without an explanation," O'Shea said.

So they won't teach them, and now they won't protect them crossing the streets.

Here's a partial list from the annoyed aldercreature (click for larger version):

And we aren't sure if this is true, but someone wrote to us and claimed all of the intersection cuts are at Catholic / private school crossings.

Here's what we're thinking about though - given the recent spate of traffic crashes involving CPD and pedestrian injuries across the city, how long until some asshole driver plows through a now-unmanned school intersection and takes out a bunch of kids?

Their probably hoping parents step up.

Very interesting. Crossing guard down my block which is by a Catholic school, just randomly was let go. But down the other way ( literally the other end of the block) where a CPS public school ks, the 2 crossing guards stayed.

The CPS and CTU leadership are scum. Crossing guards are a waste of money and protect no one. Do you believe pookie is not going to drive through a crosswalk/intersection because a crossing guard is there?

Yes, they are all near Catholic schools. Most of the people around here know what time it is. The X guards have had relationships with generations amongst the South Side parishes - specifically St. B. What we now have in the South Side the Chi for an alderidiot is a complete goof who thinks he has a semblance of coherent thought. He has been late to report crime in the 19th which means EVERY meaningful event (car-jackings, converter thefts, assaults, etc.) - "community notices" are late, typical of someone who doesn't give a shit. (keep wearing that windbreaker) - Now i am going to say something to trigger some. Keep on wearing that union badge and/or political desk job you have fleecing your neighbors. kudos to you

Every single one of those intersections is a Catholic school crossing. All of which, shockingly enough, is where the majority of CPD parents send their kids.

CPS said in their statement:

"As part of these reductions, CPS eliminated about 100 of the District's more than 700 (732) crossing guard positions on June 27, following a comprehensive review of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) safety data. It's important to note that no CPS school has lost its crossing guard program."

So it sounds like CPS kept theirs.

This is clearly targeting crossing guards by Catholic schools in the 19th ward. So parents of children paying large property taxes who send their kids to private school do not deserve protection at dangerous intersections? The amount of CPD and Fire famlies in this ward have a right to be angry.

Maybe Mr. Driver and his Ilk who are promoting no traffic stops would like to step up and take over these intersections. The recklessness they promote will end up costing citizens their lives. Its hard enough to get them to stop for the crossing guards. I never see that anymore and CPS wants to pay some loser clown $15 bucks an hour with benefits to stand there and do nothing that patrol boys did for free for a little perk!

Time to bring back the "patrol person system" for local public schools, but that would save money for the CPS schools and the Democrat politicians can't have that.

I’m not understanding why CPS would have provided crossing guards at 107th and Pulaski and 103rd and St. Louis. Both Catholic schools near those intersections are in suburbs. Queen of Marty’s is on the north side of 103rd in Evergreen Park and St. Catherine is one block west of Pulaski in Oak Lawn.

Leave the Catholic schools out of the equation. Why would CPS be paying for crossing guards to go in and out of a suburb. Nobody in those suburbs should be attending the closest grammar school in Mt. Greenwood at 108th and Homan. Which is over a half mile away from either of those intersections,

Still decent here and better than a lot of areas but things are changing. A lot of behavior that would be frowned upon if pookie were doing it i:e driving golf carts on the streets, golf carts with five-six kids on the street flying thru stop signs, kids riding electric dirt bikes on the sidewalk that can do 30 mph easy. And for a neighborhood that’s mostly police/fire they’re the worst offenders when it comes to driving in their community. Stop signs mean nothing nor do speed limits on side streets. There’s bound to be a tragedy one day.

Well, seeing as the crossing guards are CPS employees, I have no issue with this. Especially after finding out that the diocese was paying $0 for them. Might be time for the catholic schools to form their own crossing guard brigade.
