Nice Job Sarge

Above (literally) and beyond:

Mentally ill subject on the roof, CFD shows up, but it isn't for them to confront someone armed with a knife on a roof - they're just there to pick up the pieces after he hits the ground.

So Sarge goes up, talks him into ditching the knife, and then sits up with him for a bit, talking and enjoying the sunny weather before the subject finally decides it's probably quieter on the ground....

Or something like that. We don't have all the details. But we're pretty sure this isn't in any job description - it's just something cops do, day in and day out with little to no recognition, because that's what we do.

Nice job....and anyone with the details, post them in the comments.

"Do we have a CIT unit out there?"
Answer: NOPE
Pay me 5% more like Fire gets for specialized training, then I'll think about doing the training.

He’s outta his FN mind! That mental throws him off the roof he’s getting denied disability! Talk that nut off that roof from a safe GROUNDED position.

I don’t want to hear anyone complain about CIT Crisis Intervention Team Training again. These are skills that are honed in CIT training. Great job Sarge.

Very nice job! Odds of MSM carrying the story and the pix are lousy, but we know and love our LEOs. Sometimes being a hero requires compassion, patience, and smarts. Excellent job, Sarge!

Um ok, good job, thankfully everything ended well but we have a swat team for reason, you had no safety equipment while on the roof, it’s a good thing you didn’t fall off.

It works till it doesn’t work.
Alternative ending———-and then the mental hugged the sgt on the roof and deliberately fell with the sgt to the pavement. The impact Instantly killed the sgt but the mental was cushioned by the body of the sgt and walked away unscathed.
CIT is like Russian Roulette——sometimes it goes bad.

Millennials are surely a different generation, thinking much differently from the guys I worked with in 86, just out of the academy. Many were Korean and Vietnam vets. Most carried 45s, since it was a gun that put you down and kept you down. And usually took you OUT too. Never did first aid, at best they would scoop someone up and drive em to the ER themselves, a service usually reserved for wounded POs or injured kids. Someone trying to jump off a roof would usually be found a nice location to land if it was so desired. Most of us are now retired, I would NEVER put my ass out there to disarm a suicidal fool or get pulled off of a roof by one. Not worth your future health or your families security. Hard to coach little league from a wheelchair. We would NEVER render first aid to someone who tried to kill me or my partner. AND YES, A 45.USUALLY PUTS SOMEONE DOWN AND KEEPS THEM DOWN.

cfd could have just knocked him off the roof with a nice blast of water from a hose...

would have been much safer for the sergeant that way.

The saddest part about this issue? MAYOR BRANDON doesn't want to pay SGTS. For CIT training. If only those roaming city counselors were at the scene? Another ghost spot created for social workers who don't work. Any body know what building the work out of?

All good if your game of chicken worked in your favor, if not your hurt bad guy might be dead ... your F by the use of force 2 year wonders and possibly on disability because your wana be a hero bad tatic didnt work.
Why couldn't you talk to the guy from the ground?
Even swat wouldn't have tried that bs.

For those who point out what could have gone sideways on this, I'll bet Sarge's wife/gf/bf/significant other/kids have probably ripped him a new one before telling him how proud they are of his actions. Had it been my spouse, I know I would have done so before I gave him the hug of his life. And I would have made him swear never to do it again, but I know he would.
