Still?
This stat was true (and disturbing) back when we started. It doesn't seem to have improved much:
A new police officer mortality study is putting hard numbers behind what many in the profession have long felt: the job’s hazards do not end when the shift does.
Researchers analyzing National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) data from 2020 to 2023 found that law enforcement officers had a higher all-cause mortality risk than the broader working-age population, using age-standardized mortality rates to compare the groups.
The peer-reviewed study, published in Lancet Regional Health – Americas and available through PubMed Central, is based on death certificate surveillance data and focuses on “usual occupation,” a classification that reflects the job a person held for the longest portion of their working life.
And the death number?
- The study population included roughly 2.5 million working-age decedents ages 16 to 64, of whom 15,384 had law enforcement as their usual occupation. Researchers reported that the average age of law enforcement deaths was 53.7, and that most were men.
Nice to know that while we don't beat the odds often when we're gambling, we're doing better in retirement.

Can't wait to retire.
I have been struggling for so long. I can’t even remember what it the day. I am struggling to get out of bed. I struggle to get sleep. I hate the bosses more than the criminals. I don’t even care about fighting crime. I just try and do this day after day.
Beat it by ten years so far. Could be the strict diet of cat food and crackers though.
A lot of the people whom I came on the job with in the early 1970s are dead, makes you think.
Very sad. 🙏🙏🙏
Many years ago, when you actually had to do the job and you had to be the police, when you had rotating shifts constantly, many coppers were drinking heavily smoking, and the diet was something to be desired. Today you don’t see as many fat coppers, plus they don’t want you to do anything so if you follow the rules, you are just a secretary with a gun making a great salary with great benefits, smile, wave wash rinse.
When I read the FOP magazine and see that some retired officers have reached 90 some years,I’m sorry that they have died, but I’m happy they lived long after retirement!!!
The lifestyle back in the day was petty harmful to your health. Rotating shifts every 28 days, the six day work week, numerous court calls, ( before cash overtime) which would screw up your sleeping, drinking and it seemed that everyone smoked.
There does seem to be some advanced ages in the deceased officers section so good for them. Good genetics helps as well.
Retired in 2000 so I guess I beat them, but I can’t say the same for a lot of my friends.
Here's some advice. Go find another job.
The best fuck you to the city is to live long after retirement. Lay off the booze and smokes to give yourself the best chance of extending your remaining time here and collect those pension checks. You will feel better too.
Anybody know what the life expectancy is supposed to be for mayors??
That's good eatin '!
I too came on the job early 70s, worked 30 years, been retired 26 years and living in Florida, life is GREAT! ONLY GOD!
Hang in there. We are in the same boat.
Lot of it is unchecked/ unhealed bitterness
Quit the job. Work anywhere else. shit even be a Walmart greeter. This job is killing you.
My goal is to live long enough to piss on Little Dick Daley's grave, but it's not anger that drives me to live, it's looking forward to the joy of doing that.
Phoney study or survey. Retirees are living longer why do you think there are more retirees than active duty
I’m almost 30 years over and most of my retiree friends are older than me. Just check with the pension board and they have a chart that shows how many retirees are ina certain age range and you will see the survey is bs
I feel bad too but I think you are a little more extreme. My Sgt is a whore. She thinks she is all that.
When I came on you basically couldn’t retire until you were 59 1/2 and they claimed you would live 1 1/2 years. Might have been true then, but no more
Police are living into their 70’s and 80’s

100% .. this isnt the 80s 90s or 00s
There is so many available treatments to deal with your unchecked past trauma that is being ignited by currents events, that there is no excuse for studys findings.
Over 20 on and worked in the ghetto my whole career and still love life and wouldn't think of allowing this careers horrible bosses in this horrible dept ever take anything away from my life.. from my life to air in my lungs, this is just a job now not even a "profession" that pays the bills. Find a hobby... workout, eat better, and stay away from the 3 Bs.
If you have a hard time doing any of the above, see a therapist, your insurance covers it, especially if you've been involved in anything like a shooting where you've had to take a life or had to witness your partner or friend get badly hurt.
Again its up to you not the dept to treat your mind. And find friends who are not the police because we are our worst enemy.
Excellent post. workout, eat better and stay away from the 3 B's. Words to live by.
Living longer isn't good if you're living sicker.
That 53.7 stat is bogus. Your own 12/31/2024 PABF actuarial report (page 62) shows that for PABF the future life expectancy of a Male at age 65 is 18.88 years and for a Female it is 22.84 years. Effectively, a male Chicago COP, based on past data, has a life expectancy of 83. And if younger than 65, it is even higher. Rest easy.
That study is completely misleading and means nothing. They arrive at the average age at death of 53.7 for those between the ages of 16 and 64 by including only those who have indeed died, not taking into account those who lived past 64. Completely meaningless.
Based on your own PABF 2024 Actuarial Report (on the PABF website, page 62), historical life expectancy for PABF officers is 83 for Males and 86 for Females.
Rest easy. You've most definitely earned it.
