This Took a While
This one was a long time coming, and the CWB blog does (as usual) an outstanding job reporting on how the entire system worked to keep this piece of garbage OUT of prison....until it just couldn't any more. Some highlights:
More than two years after a judge found him guilty of participating in an armed robbery that left a man dead outside a suburban movie theater in 2017, Torrey Lewis has been sentenced to 85 years in prison.
While CWB Chicago did not report on the original murder case, Lewis drew our attention in 2024 when he was charged with possessing firearms after being shot while on electronic monitoring in the murder case. It was the second time authorities accused him of possessing guns while wearing an ankle monitor after the killing.

After being charged with 160 counts of murder (yes, one-hundred sixty) and twenty-five other charges, he got a bail of $300K....and the fun really began. We aren't going to steal all of CWB's reporting, but the story reads like a dystopian documentary of a "justice system" that failed at every turn.
It culminates in an appearance by .... (wait for it) ....the SAFE-T Act!!!
But barely a year later, while still on electronic monitoring in the murder case, Lewis was again accused of illegally possessing firearms. This time, authorities said they discovered the weapons after Lewis was shot while taking advantage of the unrestricted movement afforded to electronic monitoring participants under the SAFE-T Act.
Around 10 a.m. on January 31, 2024, Lewis was using one of his weekly “free movement” days, during which people on electronic monitoring in Illinois are permitted to leave home as long as they remain within Cook County.
Yep, he used his "unrestricted movement" day to commit more crimes! Who would have thought such a thing was possible???
He must have been too politically embarrassing to remain free as an example of the SAFE-T Act failures, so a judge was told to sentence him to 50 years PLUS 31 years PLUS 4 years - all to be served CONSECUTIVELY, not concurrently, with a projected release date of 2096 at age 103.

Did anyone reading this CWB article realize that one of the judges on this criminal history was once a CPD officer, then a private attorney. But now this judge cannot tell when a criminal is standing in front of him? Democratic judge and just keeps pushing criminals back on to the street? This judge has a history of not living in the elected area and sidesteps the rule to keep his job?
There is plenty of history with the courts not doing their job?

Pritzker thought it was cruel to keep people locked up in jail just because they couldn't afford cash bail as the main reason he signed the Safe-T-Act into law. How many examples does he need before the law is repealed or seriously amended.

How does Hein’s merit Lt Vanek get from being assigned to him to now being assigned to O’Hare? There is already a Lt assigned there and never been a second spot. She was in a district for a month before going to Headquarters. Time to send her to a district. No one wants her at the airport.
Found guilty but out on the streets……why? Trial over, but out on the streets….why? For what possible reason was the sentence for said trial-guilty verdict- not imposed? And taken into custody? And imprisoned? Free to kill again! One of these days, one of these people is going to whack someone who matters to the Governor, or to the judiciary, or one of the Beautiful People- will things change then? Because it sure doesn’t seem to matter when they whack just regular Joe’s or Jane’s.
How did he get 160 counts of murder? Is that like one bullet equivalent to a murder charge?
And as usual, a felon can get hands on a weapon with ease (or theft). Some state blue states ignore federal background checks, KTNs and everything else that already proves you're NOT a felon just to get a real ID. Same states practically demand a DNA and your 1st born for a FID. But that can't stop an wooden asshole like this?

Always amazes me, these merit Lts are supposed to be such great cops and leaders that the department is bypassing all these other Sgt’s who scored well to make someone merit. MELROSE PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- A 20-year-old Maywood man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of an Amazon employee at a suburban facility last week, Melrose Park officials said.
Quentin S. Williams Jr., who is also an Amazon employee, turned himself in to police Saturday in connection with the shooting.
Melrose Park officials said the shooting stemmed from a domestic-related dispute between Williams and another Amazon employee who was with Travion R. Taylor, 27, of Chicago in an employee garage at an Amazon Fulfillment Center in the 1800-block of North Fifth Avenue in Melrose Park Thursday morning.
Williams pulled out a gun and fired shots at Taylor and the other person, officials said.
Taylor was shot in the back and taken to Loyola Hospital, where he died.
Williams drove away in a dark sedan after the shooting, prosecutors said.

Former sheriff now State Police. When I was at the County “EM” was strictly for dime bag hustlers and DUIs. Nonviolent crimes. As a tax payer I agreed with this. Tax payer savings putting someone on EM is way cheaper than housing them in hotel California. But today what I see is puke worthy. EM isn’t designed for murderers and rapists. It’s a huge public safety emergency as far as I’m concerned and I’m very disappointed nothing came out of the IL legislature before they closed the books until the fall. No amendments, nothing
