Good Question

From the comments:

  • Hey SCC,

111 days since part 2 of the Detective exam and still no scores.

    Anyone have the scoop?

Obviously, they're "massaging" the numbers to get a desired outcome.

It’s just that the folks that took the test have never done real work on the street. Most hide in the station or ride their “paper” job as long as they can. Officers now are the bottom of the barrel. How do you make a list of the most “qualified” when none are really qualified. The new breed sucks!!

Another great question to ask is it true that when our contract expires in 2027 what is going to happen with our medical? Is it true that there will be no more medical for working until 55 years old? Are we really only getting medical after 29 years on no matter your age? Are we really going to have to give up 7 percent of our pension instead of the current 3.5 percent? Why is everything such a big secret?

8/13/2026 08:32:00 AM

The real order used to be: you did the watch (1st or 3rd), then Tac for 3–5 years, then a unit (OCD), and eventually detective. There was actually a progression to it, you learned the job, gained experience, and earned your way into those positions. Now it seems like these kids want instant gratification. They want to skip all of that experience and jump right into specialized spots, even if it means making complete fools of themselves because they don’t actually know how to do the job.

No more merit promotions for Officers scoring under 70% on any promotional exam. New Superintendent is reviewing Merit packages submitted under Snelling and want Merit processed opened up for new picks. For those that scored high will have to wait a couple months before the next promotions of Sergeants and Lieutenants. If you paid your clout for a merit and your score was under 70%,no refund or promotion for you.

Right when Rahm became mayor he put a hiring freeze on new recruits as well as promotions (probably a few “special” people still got promoted)

He was trying to lower the number of officers by attrition. I was on the D-list for just over 10yrs until getting made. The D-Unit was down to around 720 Dics.

The department has never recovered from all that knowledge lost which was never passed on due to retirements without replacements.

And so it goes…

I took the Detective Test in the early to mid 70"s and the test was scored when you walked out the door. After finishing the test, you would walk over to one of several scoring stations and have the test scored right in front of you. Ther where three scorers. Two scored the test and the third checked for accuracy. The third scorer verified your score, wrote your score on a master ledger, and gave you a receipt with your score. Afterwards everyone was standing around discussing their scores. In a few days I guessed my position on the list by comparing tests results. The list came out several weeks later. I guessed that I would land in the top three hundred. I was 315 on the lists. The department made over 600 from the lifetime of the list. A group of Black Officers went to court and sued over the results of the test claiming the tests was racially discriminative against them. The department promoted the top 75 to 100 officers from that list before the federal court issued an injunction against promoting from that list. It was tied up in federal court for several years. The department by this time was so short of detectives the court promoted several hundred at a time. I was in the second class after the court lifted the injunction. That was the last time the department scored a test and gave you your score on the same day of the test. It was also the last time the department held an honest exam.

Majority of the kids going to units now have never typed a search warrant. Most new detectives on the floor have never typed a search warrant either.
I agree, the natural progression of a career is out the window these days. Tact used to be a AAA/feeder program for the units. Everyone wants to bypass gaining experience the hard way and just skip the line.

Here’s a good one: Long, long ago Chicagos major newspapers would publish the names of all newly promoted Chicago Police Officers. We have a scrapbook with mounds of yellowed clippings that we saved from the Tribune, Chicago American, and Chicago Daily News. Back then the names were published to honor and acknowledge the promotee unlike today where a policeman’s name is published to embarrass or humiliate.

After a three year stint on a PT Boat in the South Pacific my dad’s older brother came on the job in 1948 and worked in the old Sheffield Avenue Station as a PO. In the mid-1950’s he took his first sergeants test and landed 60 or 65 on the list that was subsequently published in the local newspapers. My uncle and a few buddies celebrate by going to Hayward WI for some musky and walleye. Somehow, and some way he and the others are located and contacted the Chit-Chat Resort near Hayward and told that the sergeants list had been taken down and re-posted and that several of those in the first 100 or so have been pushed further down the list. Some were now so far back they would not be promoted. They picked up their musky rods, packed their gear and shot back down to the City.

Once they confirmed all that was alleged actually did happen the dozens of policemen affected pooled their money and found a retired Cook Co. judge to represent them in challenging the City and Civil Service Commission. They won. The original list was restored and the uncle wound up in Maxwell St as a sergeant and retired from 001 as Lieutenant in the late 1970’s. The Ol’ Man came on after Korea and I followed 30 years later. And none of never, ever voted for Democrats in Chicago again.
