Reap What is Sown

Back on 14 July, we wrote a post about this ATV versus SUV accident:

The woman driving the ATV on the sidewalk t-boned an SUV, disregarding the traffic signal (and the law about ATV's on city streets) and died. Darwin wins again.

And on 10 June, we had this item, asking if this was legal:

Of course it isn't, but we were being sarcastic.

Because CPD isn't supposed to chase for traffic, isn't supposed to pursue over misdemeanors, and has been restricted from even following fleeing motorcycles for any pretty much any any reason whatsoever lest there be a crash.

End result?

  • no pursuit is interpreted as no consequences,
  • no fear of being stopped leads to more law breaking

And now, Chicagoans reap the whirlwind:

  • A woman riding her bike on the Lakefront Trail suffered catastrophic injuries after a man on a motorized dirt bike crashed into her in the Gold Coast, according to Chicago police, who are now trying to track him down.

The crash happened around 3:47 p.m. on July 20, when the 45-year-old woman was riding along the trail just south of North Avenue. Police said a man wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing was riding a yellow dirt bike recklessly when he struck her.

The woman’s injuries were serious enough that Chicago police turned the investigation over to the department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit, which handles the most severe crashes.

Who should society blame (besides the guy wearing a ski mask in the middle of summer)?

  • The crash is a flashpoint in what’s become a growing complaint from regulars on the 18-mile trail: motorized vehicles speeding along a path where they don’t belong. The trail was built for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists moving under their own power. But those users increasingly find themselves on the lookout as people riding motorized bikes and skateboard-style devices zip along at breakneck speeds.

Pedal-assist e-bikes get some of the blame, particularly when riders strip out the devices that are supposed to cap how fast they can go. But the bigger worry, according to those who use the trail regularly, is heavier, faster machines that don’t belong on a bike path at all: gas-powered minibikes, electric dirt bikes, mopeds and electric motorcycles built to look like bicycles — some of which exceed 40 mph. Those devices also accelerate faster and weigh more than standard bikes, raising the stakes when something goes wrong, as it did on July 20.

Until someone invents something that disables these types of vehicles (ATVs, cycles, scooters, e-bikes, etc) expect more of it with proportional body counts.

In the meantime, maybe a clothesline at neck level would discourage this behavior?

Downtown is loaded with e bikes riding down the sidewalks making deliveries especially on Lake st where its under construction. Again like SCC said no enforcement ,no punishment. Where's that mouth that roars Giannoulias about Trump who has the SOS police force doing nothing when they could be enforcing some of this. CPD can start stopping the offenders and confiscate the bikes. They can use the wagons to haul away because there not used for prisoners.

Spend a lot of time in McHenry County and those E-bikes are all over. Many are driven by juveniles wearing dark clothing which makes it harder for drivers to spot them.

I’ve lived downtown the last 15 years while on the job. Again, most of these motorbikes and 4 wheelers started during Covid, George Floyd, Kim Foxx, and Lightfoot letting the City run wild without any consequences. We ll never catch up thanks to them. Downtown use to be untouchable, now it’s just like the south and west sides. Complete ghetto.

Anything with a motor or engine should be banned on the lakefront paths and city sidewalks period. Let them ride on the streets and compete with traffic for a lane. Pedestrians have no protection in a crash and the results are usualy serious injuries. Knowing Chicago, they will now make pedestrians wear a crash helmet and elbow/knee pads when they are out walking. Any vehicle with an assist or motor on a restricted pathway should be confiscated and impounded. I dare Chicago to get this one right.

It all goes back to holding people accountable. If you allow shit heads to do the small stuff ie. Smoking weed in public, drinking in public , pissing in public so on and so forth then they feel emboldened and continue to test what the police will allow or ignore. Here we are in Thunder Dome.

I thought "cyclists" were a nuisance before the advent of ebikes and escooters in the market. Their dumb looking helmets, bright skin tight clothing, their snarky attitudes toward drivers and their constant skirting of the rules of the road ie...stop signs and red lights. Now we have an entirely new class of assholes riding on the sidewalks and then darting in to traffic lanes and such. Let them stay on the street where taxicabs and delivery trucks can cream them into mush. The sidewalks need to be safe for pedestrians. Thats what they were designed for. Any motorized vehicle on the sidewalks should be impounded and sent to the crusher.

Yesterday afternoon on a Mt. Greenwood web page someone posted about a large group of black teens on 4 wheelers on 111th St riding recklessly, doing wheelies and more. Whoever posted it noted that they had called the police.

You should see the comments that followed. Instead of being concerned about someone possibly being hurt you can imagine where they went. I never knew there were so many “hate has no home here” Democrats in the area. It went from white grammar school kids riding scooters to policeman’s kids drinking in the parks. Nothing about the danger to pedestrians or traffic. Plenty of waste of police time comments. Wonder if the comments would have been the same if the race of those involved had been reversed?

A. The power bike rider was "disproportionately impacted" by Donald Trump.

B. She should not have "startled" the driver by her presence.

C. This was a "targeted" incident. There is no threat to the public.

D. This was not a "targeted" incident. There is no threat to the public.

E. The problem is with "small groups." There is no threat to the public.

Mt. Greenwood has always had two types of residences: city workers and non-city workers. The city workers were for the most part democratic. The non-city workers were almost always liberal democrats. I lived in the Clearing neighborhood and married a lady from Mt. Greenwood. The first issue we settled on was where we were going to live. We settled on the Clearing neighborhood. After a time, my wife said it was so nice to be away from those liberal neighbors. We moved from Clearing to a far southwest side several years ago when it started turning liberal. what I like about where I live now is outside of my surrounding neighbors I don't know my neighbors and that is the way I like it.

Driver intentionally ran over bicyclist on Lakefront Trail, prosecutors say

Lindsey Hughes, 28, intentionally drove her Nissan Rogue on the bike path in the 500 block of West Montrose Drive, near Montrose Harbor, a little before 7 a.m. on August 29, a Chicago police report said.

She made “several attempts” to hit a 31-year-old man who was riding his bike on the path, according to the report. She ultimately succeeded by broadsiding his bike and knocking him to the ground, a CPD crash report showed.

A minute later the yellow ranger pickup truck drove up and asked if we had seen them. We said yes, and pointed south. They raced after them. This was before the Forest Preserve Police were commissioned, but I think the Rangers had arrest powers,
