Nice Weekend Conehead
Chicago recorded 42 shooting victims from Friday through Monday morning, including three people killed and 39 wounded, making it the city’s second-worst shooting weekend of the year, according to HeyJackass, which independently tracks Chicago crime statistics using official and open-source data.
The weekend’s total trails only Father’s Day weekend, when 44 people were shot, for most victims in 2026. Both weekends topped Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends, which are typically among Chicago’s most violent holiday periods, the website found. Longer-term comparisons for the just-ended weekend are difficult because the weekend sometimes includes the three-day Labor Day holiday, which can skew the numbers.

Saturday began peacefully in Washington Park, where former residents of the Robert Taylor Homes gathered for a reunion. By the end of the night, the event descended into violence.
Bamani Obadele, a former resident of the Robert Taylor Homes, said the community cannot accept such incidents as routine.
"This is not something we should embrace as a norm. This is unacceptable and we need to do better as a community to get out in front of these incidents," said Obadele of community health organization Acclivus.
As one of our regular commentators asked a couple times, "Where are the 'violence interrupters'?"
Didn't they get a million dollars or some outrageous total? What are the citizens of Chicago getting in return for this tremendous expenditure? Because we're not seeing a great return on this investment.

I saw that the city is paying what looks like a community do-it-yourself organization to provide counseling services to the victims. As the operator stated, the children shouldn’t see things like this.
My question is, what about the hundreds of other hood incidents the children see as a normal part of the rich hood culture.

The program has been running for more than a decade and we have yet to see one report on their “effectiveness”. There’s zero accountability, zero data of what these people do, who responded where and for what reason and what exactly they did or tried to do. Should t there atleast be some sort of call out sheet they should have to turn in so we can see exactly what we’re paying for and what they do on a daily basis to earn that money ?

I have a solution. The city should buy a mobile shotspotter trucks for the violence interuptors. Like an old news van that can raise its own antenna. The interuptors will be assigned to any and all city festivals where these Chicago values may be on display. Like the police academy says, "The more tools youhave in the box, the better off you can police" right?

A few years ago I worked Housing South one night and we were told to sit at 35 and Federal for a few hours. I started out in The Duece in 86 and was familiar with the area. High rises now gone, replaced with low rises, nice warm night. We watched Floyd Mayweather pounding on Conor MacGregor on TV for time and a half pay A few older people were gathered sitting on lawn chairs sipping on a few cold ones. Played music, but not too loud. A few of the people came up to us to chat, very respectful to us and we were to them. Some grew up in the area but have long since moved. Most talked about the violence they grew up with but also how the area had changed since the high rises came down. Most agreed that the New Breeds were out of control and the streets were now out of control. Even they couldn't believe the random violence now taking over the streets. Hi- rises had a hierarchy, gangs ran everything and usually kept things quiet. Murders are bad for business. The former residents would get together and have a little get together once in a while as friends, no fighting or arguing . We let them know they had to shut down the party at 11 and they thanked us. They cleaned up the area and left peacably. MacGregor got pounded and we went home. MORAL OF THE STORY: SMALL PARTY, GOOD TIME. BIG PARTY, SHIT TIME.
If I was a Violence Interrupter, I’d stay away from a Robert Taylor Homes reunion too. There’s a very good chance of catching a stray bullet at an event like that. Their mamas didn’t raise no fools.

It’s not Fred’s fault or any other member of the CPD. Every community gets the level of crime it tolerates. The black community has a high tolerance level for crimes of all types. There is nothing that the CPD can do to reduce the tolerated level of crime, at least not any tactics that the community would tolerate. The police set themselves up for failure when they accept the responsibility for reducing the crime rate.
