Cold Case Solved?

And will be used for the next few years to beat up the CPD:

  • Eight-year-old Gloria Kowalewicz’s school and church were less than a half-mile from her back door in West Englewood.

On Nov. 12, 1960, a Saturday, her mother Esther was up early to get her dressed. Gloria had received her First Holy Communion recently, and a nun at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church had urged the third grader and her classmates to receive the sacrament every day for two weeks to impress the ritual into their memories.

That Saturday was the last day. But her father needed the family car, so Gloria would have to make the 3½-block trip on foot. For her daughter, the older of two kids, Esther picked out a pink-and-brown checkered dress and a blue leotard. Esther kissed her goodbye and watched from the family’s porch as Gloria walked north on Damen Avenue before turning east onto Marquette Road, past a gas station and out of sight.

Gloria never made it to the church. Her body would be found just a few hours later in a secluded spot in the suburbs. She had been shot twice in the head.

And horror of horrors:

  • It was a crime that shocked the city and stayed a mystery for decades, but now police say they have solved the case using DNA technology. And the perpetrator, they say, was a young man who wore a Chicago Police Department star.

The article is paywalled, but there are ways around it.

This guy has been off the job for almost four decades, out of Illinois for almost as long, and dead for twenty years. There is not a single Officer on the job who worked with or supervised him for years now. But it will be used by the media and assorted bad actors to paint everyone currently on the job as culpable in some way for the history of a psychopath.

Looks like pretty fantastic work putting this all together. If he did this, can guarantee you there was more.

The article was actually pretty balanced and focused mostly on the kind of detective work that it took to solve the case. The killer was a murderer who wore our star and they finally caught up to him, even though he was long dead. But I wonder if he is going to pop up in any other similar crimes – doesn't seem like the kind of sick crime that would be a one and done.

Now they have someone new to wave in the faces of idiots. No more John Burge. But the CPS will lump them together & somehow make it that W/ maybe 50-70 "bad" apples that were the police since the March 4th that Shitcago became an incorporated city every police officer is dirty somehow. Judge every officer on how you are treated not what you heard.

There is not a single officer alive today who would have a problem with exhuming the remains of this evil POS and using what's left for target practice at the range. That being said, the Trib celebrates the release of non-police child murders like Madison Hobley, a case in which the Trib played an active role in getting Hobley released from prison and pardoned, along with Anthony Porter, the one living Wilson brother and other murderers of cops and civilians. The Trib only advocates for murderers, not victims. The only reason they care about this poor girl is because her story can be used to condemn the CPD.

It's a legitimate story. This is living memory. If idiots use it to blast CPD or policing so be it.

I vaguely recall him working some homicides in 24 when things were getting sporty in Rogers Park circa mid 80s.

Does everything have to be about how it will effect view of the department?

Right now his family and cops who knew him well are asking what they missed.

I hope there weren't other victims.

I can't believe the department was capable of saving the coppers 1959 employment file along with his fingerprint cards.
Where do they keep them stored?

Although this Case is 66 years old and McInerney is dead, should there be investigative follow- up? Statistically, it is very unlikely that Kowalewicz was his only victim, whether in Illinois and/or Nevada.
Further, do what degree does this affect all— all— other arrests and investigations in which McInerney was involved? It is possible that some people currently in prison put there by this uniquely corrupt CPD.

That was definitely some tenacious phenomenon lease work, not giving up on a killer of a little girl! But I don’t know what the point is like you say in there beginning painting all the police now they’re going back 60 some years to paint the police bad as always, they’ve been doing that since then they will keep doing it now the media, but then again, who from the police department tried it out to the media who gave the information anybody got any cheese for the rat that is putting that out there what’s the point?

Would certainly like to know details. Real details. What DNA? Where found? By whom? What labs? One article said he was a detective. Did he have access to this evidence? Did he examine it? Not much glove-wearing back in the day. Rape kit done back then? Not saying he wasn’t the killer, just asking what puts him AS the killer.

In March of 1989, a senior citizen was beaten to death near 83rd and St Louis Ave. A widow, she regularly attended mass at St. Denis church and would return later in the day to attend the evening prayer service. Her body was found near the railroad tracks about a block west of the church. The apparent motive was robbery. Her family reported that she rarely had more than a few dollars in her purse. I think the case remains Open and Unsolved. It would be interesting to learn how many murders remained unsolved in the past decades.

I retired from a city dept in the huge buy out of 2004. I worked from 82 until 2004 and didn't really qualify. However I had worked the summers for the city in 70 71 and 72. The city claimed they had no record of it but I had kept my paychecks being the pack rat I am. With that evidence I got to retire 22 years ago . I know I was printed each one of those years but probably no one wants to dig thru dusty boxes. Who knows where old paperwork goes to die.
