- A young woman accused of spitting on an off-duty police officer has turned herself in.
Chicago Police said that Penny Hawthorne, 20, spit on the off-duty officer during a May 23 protest at City Hall.
Police said that she yelled insults at the officer, then spit.
Hawthorne is charged with misdemeanor battery.

I have a crazy question, being that this is Cook county. It's safe to assume that her tirade and spit were directed at the victim because she believed him to be a police officer. I'm sure she said some negative things about the police to the victim, because she assumed he was a police officer. She then spit on him, believing him to be a police officer. He is, in fact, a police officer. According to the law, that's aggravated battery, which is a felony. Yet she's charged with misdemeanor battery. Why are the police excluded from the full application of the law when they are the victim? They push and stretch and bend the laws to make sure an accused officer is charged with every felony they can think of, even when no felony charge is appropriate. But, when the police are the victim, it's a misdemeanor no matter the circumstances.
I am surprised she did not try to take a point head stick to his eye, take his insurance away, or get him fired in some sort of via other means-- every other liberal would condone it

It is rumored that you are related to the woman who spit at a police officer at a recent event at city hall. If you are indeed related to her I am curious as to why it took so long for her to come forward and do the right thing. I would like to believe that this is not the way you raised your daughter to conduct herself in such a vile way. If you are not related to her you can certainly disregard the rest of this message.
Lucky for her the police officer demonstrated restraint and didn't take physical action against her that she deserved. While everyone gets their day in court, I hope the court sees fit to punish your daughter in a manner that will always remind her that spitting on some is a disgusting, immature act that under certain circumstances could get her lights punched out.
I am also disappointed that the Tribune has not been forthcoming about this incident and her relation to one of its employees. It seems that if it was the other way around the paper would have no issue with pointing out that it was a Chicago Police officer who conducted himself in the same embarrassing manner as your daughter.
Maybe now take the time to explain to your daughter the hard work the the majority of police officers do every day, putting their lives on the line for the same people like your daughter. This may have life long repercussions for her as there are millions of people in this country that support the police. A sincere, heartfelt and honest public apology could go a long way in alleviating this disgusting act. I hope you and your daughter learn to do the right thing!!!
Finally, I cant even begin to tell you how completely embarrassed and humiliated I would be if my daughter did something like this. Her mom is a professor at Columbia.
I would bet a few dollars on the fact that the first day that SCC published that picture that someone in the Tribune office, recognized the spitter in the picture. Probably a good number of people in the office recognized her as so-and-so's kid. Maybe even went over to him and talked him about it.
Whether they like him or not, this reflects poorly on the entire journalism and newspaper field. Everyone in the Tribune office had a part in trying to bury this incident.

Of course they were rejected the war on police, making police not a second-class citizens they’re making them like third class citizens with absolutely no rights at all, the states attorneys office is just a joke nothing more but a joke!
She turned herself in and posted bond on the warrant as soon as her prints cleared. Can’t be aggravated battery to P.O. because he was not working and did not identify himself as a police officer.

Could be aggravated battery based on two different aspects of the crime. The easy one, is that the crime occurred on public property, which makes it aggravated, but that's never charged, despite many batteries occurring on the public way or on public property. A peace officer does not have to be on duty in order for a battery to be aggravated. The offender just has to know that the victim is a police officer, which she seemingly did, and the battery has to be in retaliation for the victim performing his official duties, which it seems this was. Not the easiest to prove in court in an off-duty incident, but there's enough for her to be charged with the felony, especially given the circumstances of an FOP-organized protest, where one could assume, as she likely did, that the majority of the participants were police officers.

It is amazing to me that this question even has to be asked. It is like arresting someone for driving a car without a license without checking to see if they have a valid license, except that carrying a firearm is an actual right protected by the US constitution while driving a car is a privilege.

Having been born and raised in Oak Park 70 years ago, I've seen many changes in my old hometown. Joining the Army in 67' saw alot. Sadly, I've seen such disrespect of our American values and culture. Over the years the Democrats, liberalism, and the influx of criminal blacks from the Austin barrier have lead to many crimes that were unheard of in my time. She’s going to graduate from Boston college 50k a year tuition and move into a 2k apartment in lily white wicker park or Lincoln park and continue to fight the good fight.
