New York, We Have a Problem
- Humiliating videos surfaced online Monday of NYPD officers being doused with water by groups of jeering punks in separate incidents — and in one case, hit in the head with a bucket while trying to make an arrest — while refusing to confront their tormenters.
The viral clips, which appear to have been shot in recent days during the city’s heat wave, enraged NYPD cops and had the city’s top police unions blaming New York politicians and their “anti-police rhetoric” for the officers’ lack of response.
“Our anti-cop lawmakers have gotten their wish: the NYPD is now frozen,” Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch fumed. “It’s not the fault of these police officers. It’s the end result of the torrent of bad policies and anti-police rhetoric that has been streaming out of City Hall and Albany for years now.
“We are approaching the point of no return," Lynch said. “Disorder controls the streets, and our elected leaders refuse to allow us to take them back. As police officers, we need to draw a line.”
We know New York coppers. We like New York coppers. And if they're cowed into not taking some sort of action, then New York has a very big problem on its hands.

I worked in a city in the NE that certainly cared about PR. We had all sorts of stupid shit come down the pipe- shift dancing videos and ridiculous stunts like that. But one thing I'll say: if someone put hands on a cop, spat on one, or threw something on one, the bosses wouldn't hold us back from grabbing that sucker up and throwing em in the back of a wagon. And when we knew a "protest" was coming to town the prosecutor came into roll call and told us that they would back us and that "if you think you've got probable cause, you've got it." We lost some cases at trial but they pushed it there. I would hate to have to be the police somewhere you'd have to stand by and get assaulted- nemo me impune lacessit.
How could the cops do anything? If they arrest the assholes and there is resistance and one of them attempts to disarm one of the officers and gets shot by the police. Then the headline would read, “Teen Gets Killed For Dousing Cop With Water.”

As I've become close friends with some CPD officers, in about the last 5 years +/- I realized I am actually blessed and lucky that I DIDN'T join. On the other hand, it has made me appreciate what you guys do day in and day out even that much more. De Blasio and just about every other politician I can think of is an ass and a worthless wolf in sheep's clothing.

The comments of a retired cop from the old school. The " accidental superintendent, Special Ed" will most likely be gone by the end of the year. It remains to be seen if the city council will pass the civilian review board ordinance, which if passed, chooses the new superintendent. That will go a long way in determining who the successor is. The city council will resist any contract that does not include the " reforms" wanted by the progressives, and resit right up into the entire matter ends up in circuit court. i think they will also resit any findings by the arbitrator. They want an easier path to suspending and firing you for just about anything that is on their mind, along with much more investigative power for COPA, especially at police involved shootings. Bad times are hear for the law and order crowd and for the honest hardworking men and women of the department. If someone’s shot they technically never made “physical contact” with the offender . Why then would a AGG BATT/Firearm charge be used?
Water from a hose or bucket is PHYSICAL CONTACT. Not necessarily physical HARM but unwanted physical contact therefore it constitutes a battery. Assault would be more of a threat. These shitheads didn’t just threaten the officers they carried out the act.
Call it what it is, a HATE CRIME. It is a battery and multiple assaults where the offenders were motivated because of the officers membership in a certain social group(NYPD). There was an absolutely biased attack motivated by the offenders hatred of the police. Charge them and make examples or else it’s open season even more.

Undoubtedly these street clowns would leave the officers no choice, but to use physical force to apprehend them. In today's climate, the NYPD officer's were faced with a lose-totally lose situation and they chose wisely. Sad, but true.
The thing is, you don't know WHAT someone has in that bucket. It could look like water, but could be any of a number of substances. Bleach? Battery Acid? Gasoline? Alcohol? Nails? Stones? Lye? Concrete?
These 'harmless', 'just funnin' assholes might be using water now, but at some point it's predictable that some lunatic will amp up the attack, with catastrophic results.
The only way to deal with this, and to prevent escalations in attack modes is to immediately arrest the perpetrators, and prosecute them. If the Prosecutors won't do their job, SUE the criminals that pull this crap.

Read the ILCS again rookie. Contact of an insulting nature is a battery. If someone spits on you, they haven't made "physical contact" either. But it's contact of an "insulting" nature. After viewing that video, you don't believe that that was contact of an "insulting" nature?
I wish a could give these officers, and those like the some encouraging words that they’d heed. This time next year, they’ll be in the same position, maybe worse. I can only hope and pray you make it home at the end of each shift.
