PDT's On the Way Out?

  • The Chicago Police Department is replacing the bulky, outdated computers that sit in department vehicles with new smartphone technology in one of the city’s most violence-plagued districts, officials announced Wednesday.

The new technology will be installed by the end of the year in department vehicles in the Harrison Police District on the city’s West Side as part of a pilot program.

Officers in the district will be able to quickly access data from police surveillance cameras, ShotSpotter technology, which tracks gunfire, intelligence from district data centers, information from license plate readers and other intelligence on a Samsung phone, police officials said. The officers can use the programs on the phone outside of the vehicle, then dock it into a screen with a keyboard installed into the car to be used to file reports and access the technology on a larger screen. They can also dock the phone into desktops at the district and other vehicles.
Granted, the PDT's are large and bulky. But they have a couple things going for them:
  • you can see the screen without glasses
  • you can rest a six-pack on the closed lid
  • you aren't going to damage the whole system by docking and undocking multiple times a shift
Let's face it - coppers aren't gentle with equipment. But we'll have to see.

Let us know.

As a Point, other departments that have their employees use Tech in the line of duty also have a policy where the Employee is responsible for any damage unto and including the cost of replacement.

Example.... you lose your City ID card or Badge, you're on the Hook for the $$$. The PDT is turned in Damaged...you could be held accountable for the cost of repair/replace.

And if the City is going to go this direction, they should get a small printer with bluetooth connection to the handheld. Print all Citations with the handheld. No More Handwritten tickets.

I see a few issues here, some of which SCC mentioned. Also, do they know what happens to cellphones that are constantly charged? Their battery life quickly goes to shit. Or even after approximately 1.5-2 years, the battery life goes to shit. Kind of like the PDTs, ever unplug one? Besides the 50/50 shot of losing connection, the battery might be good for 10 minutes. Also, the PDTs were bulky, but they can take some abuse. I have a feeling we will have lots of broken phones. I also foresee the possibility of shit heads breaking into squad cars to steal the phone, they rob and murder people for phones. Finally, I foresee many many glitches. It will likely be rushed out and half assed thought through.

Technology, technology. My, oh my. How ever was police work done before we had all this technology?

Ever go to a doctor, and while you're trying to describe what's going on with you, the doctor is half-listening while typing and clicking on some laptop computer?

Is this the way things are going?

"Instant access to this technology and that database."

All fine and dandy, when it works. But nothing beats observing and interacting with an actual human being.

OT, but this probably deserves its own post, SCC. There is a vague reference elsewhere on the blog to “GAPA”. This, presumably stands for the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability. Every police officer - heck everyone in Chicago - should become very familiar with what this radical, left-wing nutjob organization wants to do. And in fact, will get away with under Lori Lightfoot, a supporter of the proposed GAPA ordinance. Recently the Mayor’s Office made the CPD meet with “those people” (yes, I said it) to begin the process of preparing the Department for their outrageous implications. Trying to protect citizens will never be the same under this law. And being a cop will never be worse.

CB number and a BigJohnson’s Dashboard honorable mention?

Although these phone devices are initially free, and if it takes off, the big money will be spent to outfit the rest of the Dept, which I’m sure basically
Patrol. Expect enhanced COPA linked GPS and like Alexa, it will always be listening/recording.
Don’t expect the worldwide internets connection to be a strict, solely CPD monitored channel.

Oh, and don’t leave the device unattended, like leaving does and windows open, maybe rushing out to foot chase a feral...that device will be gone.

21st Century Task Force recommendation - a public safety monitor.
Not to be confused with Big Johnson’s Multi-Source Crime Conditions Dashboard.

Very true. And the equipment won't last. Any cost estimate on this master plan? If investigative reporters still existed in the MSM it would be interesting to dig and find out who's behind this idea and what they and others are making off of it. The Chicago Way. Yes, and this will certainly help to bring down crime and lock up the criminals. Why now, why is this important enough to waste money on? Tell us Grootster.

I vote for something like a flamethrower robot to keep the cretins inline. And perhaps a smaller model remotely off loaded and controlled by the officer from the comfort of his vehicle. A couple of those would break up an unruly block party of several hundred pretty fast. Or one could just hope their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 would catch on fire and lob it at the miscreants. The smart phone may be a good tool but the real problem is the amount of different reports that need to be completed for every incident. If you have a dole arrest for a guy driving a car you have at minimum a case report, an arrest report, an ISR, an inventory and a vehicle tow. Talk about a waste of time. This all needs to be integrated into one report one record number. There are so many fricken reports and systems that are required for every single incident it’s ridiculous. Suburbs can do a arrest case an inventory on one report why can’t we???

Think of the man hours saved by not retyping the same information on 5 different reports for one incident.

Ric Flair is going to be working on his county pension now. We will see how it works, go from top spot at ISP to Dart puppet.

8/22/2019 07:51:00 AM

Here comes Leo! Hopefully Dart uses his head and let’s Leo run the Police side of the Sheriffs department. Too many political do-nothing hacks. If Dart allows Leo to run things, a lot of dog asses to weed out.

Last time I checked, we don’t have a “Chief of Police”. CPD has a Superintendent

Want to see how real police departments operate? Look at any well run village or city. PDTs permanently installed, not removed every shift. Running a plate or name on your phone? Imbecilic. A second rate police department in a third world circus city run by over promoted clowns. On a positive note, at least we have running water and toilets that flush.

Remember.. microphones of smartphones can be remotely turned on by an administrator at anytime. It’s already been decided by the courts that officers in department vehicles have no expectation to privacy which is why the city can put constant running audio and video in your vehicle if they really wanted.. just like bus drivers have constant 24/7 audio and video coverage and CTA can patch into a moving bus video and audio.

So again, She spends millions on that bullshit but nothing into the pension? So lets fuck everyone with more taxes. If any Mayor is so concerned about a billion dollar deficit why in Gods name would you spend 16 mil on nonsense instead of putting it into our pension? Typical Demorat, lets spend what we dont have or do have.

Yup nothing like having your eyes and nose glued trying to focus on a 3X5 piece of equipment whilst driving in the hood where your eyes and your partners should be out in front for safety. I mean we ticket people for driving while using their phones don’t we? Dont we bitch enough about coppers using their phones while on the tour when they should be scanning the landsscape? Especially in a dangerous shit hole like 011? Makes perfect sense to restrict your field of vision. Lol. Untucking Real. Who comes up with this shit and who allows it to become policy. Certainly not anyone who’s ever patrolled in the hood. Just portable and small enough to get lost and end up in the wrong hands. Hahahaha Btw you I’ve used these phones. And they suck. Texting shit into a phone and running a PDT are completely different. I’ll take a car with a running PDT over any wonder phone while working in the streets thank you.

You fillmore guys better get your shit together and start speaking up against this lunacy.
