Last we had heard, the homeowner had a .357. That is anything but a "small" revolver. The recoil alone would probably dislocate Zorn's girlish shoulders and the noise would loosen his bladder instantly.
- I don’t own a gun, but I probably would if I lived in Old Mill Creek, which isn’t a suburb so much as a lightly populated portion of horse country in Lake County just south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

- From the safety and literal and emotional distance of my position at the keyboard in my office in the light of day, my conclusion is that he was not justified in using deadly force against people who at the time were some 40 feet away, according to law enforcement officials.

Do any of them put ANY blame on the criminal?

Every writer is not a news reporter, but an opinion writer, and along with the editorial staff, all left wing liberals and firmly anti police and anti conservative. They used to do ( along with the Sun-Times) great investigative pieces on public corruption. But, that has fallen away and not it is hit pieces on conservatives, Catholics and cops.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone. As a faithful reader I appreciate being able to keep up with happenings back in Chicago. Regarding the Zorn story, for those who remember, I was taken back to an incident that left an everlasting impression on me that repeatedly comes to mind even after these many years. In the 004 Dist, Officer Matthews was surrounded and bum rushed by "unarmed assailants" at Wolf Lake. Though armed, the officer was beaten to death by the thugs. I vowed on that day it would never happen to me if confronted by the same situation. I totally empathize with the gentleman from Lake County, it could have easily turned out the same way for him if he had not taken action.
Again thanks SCC as I watch retired and from afar.
For those of us who don't travel to Lake County too often, pull up Google Earth and look at Old Mill Creek in a satellite view. Most of the houses there are isolated from one another. If these morons were there to just steal a car the pickings would be much better in a more populated area outside Old Mill Creek. And what was found in the stolen car....the proceeds from a number of burglaries. Does anyone with half a brain think these morons were just there for the car? What would they have done had they broken into the house and got the drop on the husband and wife who lived there? A wise old friend's Dad once told me when bad things happen to you it is easy to find who's responsible, jut go into the can and look in the mirror. These morons just learned a lesson the hard way and Zorn has obviously learned nothing.

It's always so easy to Monday morning quarterback something like a shooting that happens in the blink of an eye. Put yourself in this homeowners shoes from start to finish. It's 1:00am, dark, you're older now, can't fight a group of young people, and they are on your property with the intention of stealing your property, and possibly also to beat you to a pulp just for fun, or worse. Forty feet between you and them is nothing in the grand scheme of things and that distance can be closed in a couple seconds. I would not be so quick to judge unless I found myself in a similar situation.

Even if a judgment against him is only a remote possibility, avoiding a civil trial by offering a settlement is going to make sense to consider, as bitterly unfair as that seems.

Illinois does not have a " castle doctrine" so to speak, a stand your ground law, but they come pretty close. That man up in lake County was on his property, in the dark, in a rural area, when a group of strangers were approaching him. He is in the right. Sec. 7‑1. Use of force in defense of person.
(a) A person is justified in the use of force against another when and to the extent that he reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or another against such other's imminent use of unlawful force. However, he is justified in the use of force which is intended or likely to cause death or great bodily harm only if he reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or another, or the commission of a forcible felony.

In short: the 93rd General Assembly passed a statute (it was SB 2386 when it was a bill) amending the "Self-Defense: Exoneration" section of the criminal code to say that no civil liability can arise from an act of self-defense as defined in the statute. In other words, if you're not liable criminally by reason of self-defense, you are not liable civilly by reason of self-defense.
