Fix All of This...Or...
Everyone is whining about this:
- If you were in Logan Square yesterday and you did not get robbed, you
probably know someone who did. The neighborhood was the hardest hit, as
no fewer than 23 robberies involving nearly 30 victims were reported,
mostly in two surges: overnight and early evening.
And, for the second time in less than a week, Chicago police officers witnessed an armed robbery in progress but did not try to catch the offenders, who continued to rob innocent victims on the street freely.
But almost no one (except some alternative media outlets) is reporting this:
- In the steamy summer of 2020, months that were full of violence and
social unrest, one of the highest-profile crimes was a murder that occurred on the Wabash Avenue bridge, steps from the Trump Tower.
Chicago police released surveillance video of the shooting, resulting in two men being charged with first-degree murder.
Two weeks ago, a judge found one of them not guilty in a bench trial. Prosecutors immediately dropped all charges against the second man. And a third man authorities identified as a shooter in the case has never been charged.
Curious to know how a case that prosecutors said included video evidence of both accused men at the scene could end without a conviction, we ordered a transcript of the court hearing in which Judge Carol Howard handed down her finding.
The judge didn't think the object being pointed was a gun, despite numerous shell casings recovered from right where a gun would have been fired. Message Received Your Honor!
We aren't big fans of not chasing criminals. We did it for years, tens of years. We put a few in prison, too. Even got to shake the supernintendo's hand once.
We aren't big fans of losing our pensions though. Nor are we fans of giving what we've earned in terms of property, retirement deferred compensation, and other assets over the years to some bust out. We learned the risks of that at Federal Court when an outside lawyer - not Corp Counsel - destroyed the plaintiff's case. After that, we were more meticulous....and wrote better paper.
If it comes down to observing crime and writing paper versus a few years at 219 S Dearborn listing our assets before a judge, we'll be the best damn observer that the politicians and voters want us to be. We'll be gone soon anyway, and far away from here.

It's infuriating to say the least. Working as a police officer in today's climate is both challenging and frustrating. I get it, why put your livelihood on the line for a bust out, but at times you're put to the test when criminals run rampant and are so brazen they laugh at you. Criminals could care less if the police are around because they know you can't "chase" or even worse, you put yourself in a position that may require deadly force and the department along with the politicians and the media can't wait to hang you out to dry. Who's to blame? Pretty much everything, social media, camera phones, weak politicians and leaders.

I find it very ironic that the crime wave has headed north to areas that for years were very safe. The reason I find it ironic is because so many progressives live in these areas ie. Look how the department and city has treated officers fairly recently who were involved in justifiable shootings after they engaged in a foot pursuit.
Every foot pursuit, you risk getting into trouble, but you won't get into trouble if you choose not to pursue. It says it right there in the order. So why risk it? Don't do it!
How many of the victims were carrying BLM signs in the summer of 2020? The sight of groups of hipsters and their fugly wives carrying those signs on my block was the final trigger for me to sell and leave Illinois. The behavior of white liberals in my neighborhood was the final straw for me. For the first time in my life, I felt like a stranger on Chicago’s NW side. Hopefully last nights victims make full recoveries and get back to work so they can pay taxes.

My money is with Vanguard because that’s were Warren Buffet says that where unsophisticated investors should invest. I’m in for the long term so I’m very conservative. My return over the last 10 years has been a little more than 8%. Haven’t we seen over the years cops who have loss their savings investing in scheme sure to work that don’t?
My broker fees are transparent and modest as are the costs for an advisor to manage my account.
I’m glad I participated and only wish I put more in there.

Deferred is/was meant to put current earnings away pre tax and grow that money over time in equities, bonds, short term paper. Sit and do nothing? We are crime historians, we document crimes. That’s what you, the voters voted for, and the city and administration push out. Actually, I’m confused. The police are “acting” exactly as the voters have directed. We are being paid as the result of a negotiated contract approved by politicians elected by the voters. Does that “explain” it?

You can thank the voting patterns for the last few election cycles. No officer is trying to head to federal prison for an honest mistake but that’s the name of the game now. I love how civilians think police work is like the movies and nothing could ever go wrong. Deferred Comp. is a 457 plan. Its in Federal Law. You can choose what to invest in to a degree. I agree that Chicago Blended Fixed is a problem to invest in because you don't know whats in the asset and you cant find out other then just a loan to the city. The other funds you can find out whats in the on yahoo finance under the "holdings" tab. They will give you your money before you retire. But there are penalties that are applied by the IRS not Nationwide Securities.

Note on losing your deferred compensation. The “Plan” Nationwide has rights to YOUR money until you retire or separate from the dept. Make no mistake there is a reason you cannot access any of your money and it’s not to protect you. The Bank takes your money puts you in some nonsense fund and goes and makes triple on what your “fund” will perform at. I wish I never got swindled into 457b plan it’s a terrible plan and want out but they snatch u up in the academy for a reason.
If you want out switch to the fixed and you will know your exact return.

Officer lasso got killed in a foot pursuit with a gun. he wouldn’t have gotten in trouble if he did not pursue. I’d hate to think he hesitated because of policy and what happened to the officer in 016 and officer stillman in 010. Please define pro active policing? Not quite sure what that is? I show up on time, in the prescribed uniform and attend my roll call. I listen to the information that is disseminated on crime patterns. I retrieve my radio, taser, M4, body worn camera and go to my assigned area. I answer my calls for service. I do high visibility patrol in troubled areas by driving frequently down those blocks. I wave. I smile. I sometimes even salute the old timers. J

Someone doesn't know how it works. Like when I came on, the old instructors in the Academy told us to "never get into that deferred comp. The City can take all your money whenever they feel like it." Took some research and 3 years until I got in. Only $100 per check and I have just north of $300 K in it.

I know to each his own, but I can’t understand people who retire and are afraid to touch their deferred comp. Enjoy yourself, do what you like best because you never know what plans god has for you, I.e. cancer or getting hit by a bus. I am not saying that you have to buy a $20,000 Watch (unless that is your thing), but have some fun. I fish and hunt…I been on 4 Canadian trips the first 18 months of retirement. The wife and I went on 2 cruises. I know everyone’s situation is different, but enjoy life a little. The only ones that will be happy if you don’t touch it and have a million dollars is your kids when you die.
