This is indicative of a nationwide trend, even if no one is covering it much:
The number of candidates testing to become New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers has reportedly dwindled in recent years, leaving the Democrat-run city scrambling to fill those positions.
The number of candidates has shrunk over the past eight years, the New York Post reported on Saturday. In 2017, the number of prospective officers was 18,000 but has decreased to 8,000.
That is a 55 percent drop, according to data from the union known as the Police Benevolent Association.
A seasoned Brooklyn officer told the outlet that officers are telling people not to take the job because “You’ll be worked to the bone, attacked by perps and politicians and hammered with nonsense complaints and ticky-tack discipline.”
For some odd reason though, this isn't as big a problem in the reddish portion of the nation. In fact, sizable percentages of those leaving blue state / blue city $hitholes are ending up in right-leaning jurisdictions where they aren't going to be indicted, fired or jailed for doing the job they were hired to do.
It's so very odd.

Aside from COVID/Biden, we’ve had a good economy for over 10-12 years. Unemployment at 4% or less for YEARS is unheard of. The nature of jobs has changed too (people making huge money playing Fortnite, posting your escapades on OnlyFans, podcasting, reselling PS5 and Sneakers (if you’re a 1).
A good recession would cure a lot this crap. Unemployment needs to be a good 6-8%, a good housing bust too.

Chicago stands out with Mayor BLM Johnson, Governor Pritzker and New York with Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul as probably the two worst areas to have these four numbskulls to work under as law enforcement officers. Smart cops are leaving. This creates a problem because what’s left are not sharpest knives in drawer. Lots of DEI who only qualified with lower standards. Look around at roll call, and evaluate the physical makeup of the troops. Lots of candidates for sever weight look clinics. The press conferences are a joke with tons of DEI flab in background.

Retired in February of 2020 and working in Middle Tennessee since then. Gave up all my rank and started over. I have been here for almost 5 years and best thing I and we (the family) ever did. The community support is amazing, great equipment and YES even support from Command. No union is only downside but still the best career ever. Gave me a nice recharge. 31 years and counting
I understand we need new officers to continue to pay into the pension system however over the last year I have met several kids working out at the same gym as me and learned they we're in different stages of the hiring process for Chicago. At some point over time I would sit them down in the gym and have a heart to heart with them and or their parents if I discovered the parents also worked out at the gym. I know for certain out of the 11 kids only 1 continued to go forward with the process and that one did discontinued with Chicago and went to the suburbs. I retired early 2024 and will continue to discourage anyone from joining CPD. To describe the department in short would be to say the department sets up up for failure. I redirect all the kids to the trades, go to the trades and get out of the city if not the state.
Working in a red state like Texas ain’t all that tbh, they are very pro police until it comes time to pay you, they pay like shit and have no union. Cry about Chicago NYPD, SF and LA but they pay top dollar and believe it or not, difficult to be fired unless you do something completely stupid.

Oh please. I came on the job when a lot of Vietnam Vets were in their last decade on the job. Many of them could have given a shit about uniform standards. In fact when they came on, many of the old timers thought they with their longer hairstyles and mustaches didn’t cut it. I fondly remember all those guys talking about their “weed smoking” days prior to the job. Stop idealizing it. As for hiring standards, yeah I agree but how do you explain hires like a “Kaporis?” Which happened over 20 years ago. You explain it like anything else “a favor” was done in return for something else in order for somebody to get hired & that someone should’ve never been hired. I worked in a district where I remember an ex military officer (not Vietnam or any war vet)& let’s just say every decent boss hated him. His crew cut and eternally creased pants didn’t mitigate that he was a dumb jag off. He’s lucky he didn’t get fired or end up in jail for some of the dumb shit he did with his “crew cut” neat as a pin partner (who yeah eventually did get fired for stalking). There have always been piss poor hires. Any officer with his head screwed on straight has never really wanted their kid on this job. Corruption has always existed, but yeah is hiring only hire on 5 foot, 90 pound Hispanic females or aspiring “rappers” with anti police views related to some boss going to make it a better department? No, it won’t. The one thing this department has always done is kill the spirit of the workers and lift the “connected” dog asses. Same game, different players.
When I applied, it was 1990 recession. Over 40,000 applicants if I remember. But yeah, I don’t think even a recession would change who this department wants on the job now. They think the cure all for never having another George Floyd incident is hiring only 5 foot tall 90 pound females or liberals with college degrees who can’t wait to get their inside M-F 2nd watch spot.

I also retired from a big city and went on to work in a small town. It’s amazing how differently you are treated by the public. At first i wasn’t used to it when i got here. Residents of all ages-even teenagers-wave when you go by and I’ve also been invited over for thanksgiving and Christmas dinner several times if I was on duty. My experience in the big city would never allow me to accept such an invitation. Nonetheless, it has been quite the positive experience thus far

Most of you guys complain and you know very well that after 20 plus yrs you do what ever you want and the bosses don't even bother you so much anymore, me I've got 22 yrs and pushing a beat car my entire career and yes in thee ghetto. That being said, I always tell new hires to work this job to their convenience and not for the bosses. The job itself is what you make of it, yes there are good days and bad. I also give them advice on making good financial moves so they retire early and have a big bank account for retirement. What I don't get is why so many guys and gals retire and end up working afterwards and especially bad jobs. God Bless guys and Happy retirement to those that made it.....

NYPD Police Officers can retire at any age with 20 years of service. Why can’t CPD have the same pension,why is it legal to have a two tiered pension fund for new police officers. Same job,making same contributions with less benefits. This should be changed.
