Fifty-Three in Ten Years
A truly shocking and disturbing number of CPD suicides:
It’s hard to imagine a more stressful job than policing.
In police academies across the country, recruits begin each day by reciting a code of ethics. Different police departments use slightly different versions, but the essence is the same: to protect the weak, act without favor, and uphold the Constitution.
Yet the brutality of urban life tests those ideals every day. “It’s like Fallujah out there,” one retired Chicago police officer told me. “And the whole time, I’m like—I didn’t sign up for this.”
American police officers train for an average of five months. Then many of them are sent into some of the most volatile situations a city can produce. They are expected to act with the patience of a nurse, the judgment of a lawyer, and the precision of a Navy SEAL.
In recent years, that job has only grown harder as cities like Chicago have become more violent and their residents have turned against policing itself.
We can't adequately quote the article as it is actually quite involved. You really need to go read it all.
This statistic really jumped out:
Through public records requests, The Free Press was able to uncover that 53 officers, including 12 retirees, have committed suicide in the past decade. The situation is much worse than previously thought, with past estimates putting the figure at “more than 30 police employees.” The Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago, which distributes police pensions, told me that one out of every five deaths they logged since 2015 was a suicide.
This article was cited across two or three of our regular reading sites, nationally known bloggers read by hundreds of thousands of people daily. We got more emails about it than we've gotten about anything else in quite a few years.
Will it make a difference? No idea. We certainly hope so. Fifty-three Officers (twelve retirees among those) is near incomprehensible. Any other profession that had fifty-three suicides over ten years in the tiny slice that CPD represents would be a national outrage, resulting in a complete re-evaluation of policy, procedures, methodology, rules, regulations, oversight, accountability, etc.
But not for the police in a blue city, blue state $hithole where they've been demonized and dehumanized for far too long.

The majority of bad morale, hatred for fellow workers, animosity, lack of camaraderie is caused by extremely bad bosses.
How about letting P/O vote fore the worst Sgt, Lt, Capt, and Gold Star of the year.
Turn to God. Only He can alleviate the great sorrow and pain experienced with the job and life. Life is but a short journey, work on connecting with God. He will call you home soon enough from this valley of tears. Don’t let the world fool you … evil is very REAL … you see it everyday … turn to God for peace and serenity. Know that He will take you home soon.
Pray for the repose of these 53 souls.
Satan uses others as a portal to you. Do not let the evil that you encounter from others while on the job consume you.
After the article they will hire a couple of psychologists for EAP, say they are doing everything they can and call it a day. They will never address the effects of poor vindictive leadership, overworked officers, and the continued vilification of CPD by the political class in Chicago. The problems are obvious. The leaders of the department are cowards that would rather live with the CPD suicide death count than offend their political sponsors.
I currently have my head slightly above water and my hands tied with stress of the job. The connected get taken care of. The favorites get taken care of. The rest of us are to remain silent and just do the grunt work. The bad policy and untitled bosses are the biggest problem. The oversight groups pile on goofy policy that only helps the criminals.
Brandon only cares about putting more section 8 in any last morsel of a”normal” neighborhood. That’s been his goal, he ran on defund the police and these people elected him. He doesn’t care.
SMH! I’m glad my son is taking a different career path. I came on in 1997 and plan on retiring next year. No one wants to help each other. Everyone is worried about doing something wrong. The supervisors get promoted to increase their pay and only care about getting themselves out of work. CPD is a broken team. We no longer function to help each other out. If it was like this when I started I would have never stayed this long. Good luck to the new people and wishing you a safe journey.
I understand politicians, the media and bad supervisors messed this career up. Policing in Chicago is DEAD!….. Makes me want to cry! Have a good night!
I feel the job has become more stressful with the gamesmanship done by BIA (IAD). They don’t investigate complaints fairly and have a predetermined outcome by their Lt’s and exempts. The whole place is a sham. The department has become nothing but a political pawn by the racist politicians. No one is hard charging or wanting to do extra. Only a fool would do anything extra. I’m not going to lose my livelihood or my job for some idiot with a white shirt who thinks they are the smartest person in the room. I currently work for a self untitled moron who will get us in trouble.
Snelling, Hein and all these other douchebags have blood on their hands. Treating bosses like shit for stats which starts a trickle down effect. Its sick what people will sell out for. Two ego driven assholes
To all the p/o's stay safe out there and thanks for what you do.
I am feeling good tonight. But with 9 years on I have trouble sleeping and feel like no one cares. No one has our backs. Work has become just go in and come home. Everyone is just trying to make it through the shift. I can totally relate to the article. Some days are hard.
Morale has been broken for a good amount of time. This is a major part of the problem. Bad supervision and bad policy. Suicide comes when people feel helpless in their situation. Shit is really messed up with bad leadership. Suicide is never the answer. But I don’t see anything changing.
007 District
Scary stuff! I know we have been heading in the wrong direction as a department. The job is no longer fun. I just want to retire.
SCC, thanks for posting. Great article. Details exactly that the mayor, most of the city council, and even a lot the top CPD brass are useless police-haters. No wonder the CPD suicide rate is sky-high.
Another messed up weekend coming. What is the department doing about all the suicides. Besides trying to hide it. The department is trying to help everyone out by changing day off groups, canceling days off around holidays, change reporting times, acting ridiculous about uniforms and petty stuff. WOW! This is all part of the problem! The people at the top are clueless!
And just remember the next time you go to “Officer Wellness” and they tell you just how easy it is to go to The Wire, click EAP, and there you will find a list of available therapists in your area. And then you finally work up the nerve to find that therapist, finally decide to call, and the good receptionist tells you that particular Doctor is not taking on any new patients. And then you ask goofball receptionist if they can recommend anyone else and the receptionist cannot. And then you hang up and laugh at how broken it really all is on this job and count your lucky stars that you’re not in any type of true crisis at the moment. I then wonder if that has happened to any of my Brothers and Sisters that were truly in crisis and received the apathetic receptionist treatment? I sure hope not.
The answer is simple.
No one gives a fuck about us.
The order of the day is to do as little as possible and TAKE YOUR time.
When you have to complete that case report, crash etc ; "Change location" a block or 2 away so you can back up to a building, a safe place where you can't be attacked. Take your time doing the paper.
Keep your brights on so the mutts can't see into the car.
If your jag-off sergeant questions you about it, tell him you are trying to keep yourself safe. Fuck him/her also.
If you get stressed out, hit the medical. Go on stress leave.
Fuck the citizens - Almost ALL Democrats.
Don't let their fucked up lives screw you up emotionally.
They were going to die young anyway one way or another. Let it ALL BURN.
NO ONE cares about us. Make this city and department your BITCH.
Take care of yourself and your family.
Get paid, get a pension and then GET THE FUCK OUT of this blue shit-hole State.
I was close to someone who did it! I’m still hurting with it. The pain just won’t go away. I’m so mad. The CPD doesn’t help.
Take a look around at the corrupted, the clouted, those that abuse, sexual harass, intimidate and yes, im talking about all the people that work all around us in this corrupted crooked county.
Instead of kissing their ass,
Report their ass.
City is just speed cameras and mutts now, place is just a landfill of shit birds and Nissan Altimas. U sooo stupid.
Good friend ET P.R., got into it with now retired Sgt M.O. who yelled at him because he wanted an inside spot. Two days later he was found windows open and candles burnout and a self inflicted gun shoot wound to the head. For about a day the Sgt walked around looking shocked. Then carried on like nothing happened.
You never know what someone is going through. Treat people like you want them to treat your kids.
Suicide sucks. Most of us never see it coming. Most are good at hiding what’s really going on. The department don’t care about us. They only care about getting the work done. We are all only a number. Please take care of yourself and your family. Because when you retire that’s all you have.
CPD has become a sad place to work. It’s all about the 8th and the 22nd. Who will be the next.
Words fail to express my deep sorrow for the loss of Brothers and Sisters in Blue. Suicide has come to us like a cancer and grows because of the way we are treated. We have NO morale! We are treated so badly!!!!!!!!! I don’t think I am going to stay with CPD much longer. I have been looking elsewhere for work. My partner feels the same. The is no future with CPD.
OT I have a short time on the job 15 years. I never heard this before and have been this shocked. A 10-1 was called in 12. Two officers have a mental ambush them and almost shoot them dead in the face. Dispatch gives this to a sgt to go. And this sgt. An accountability sgt mind you says. No im not going I have to go to a DOA instead. The other sgt working gets it. And now this turns into a swat incident. So did a little digging and found out this sgt is a merit hack who only has like 2 years as a sgt but has 30 years in. So forgive me if I am wrong but I’m sure they don’t teach that in sgt school. And with officers killing themselves or getting killed you think this sgt would go there for his guys. Nope. Thank god for Sgt SA. He shows up and handles his job. But to turn down a ten one on the air. Never seen that. This Sgt should be ashamed of himself. And just turn your star in and retire. You have now lost the respect of everybody. Sorry for the rant but this shows that lack of leadership. 012 has been a sinking ship for a long time. No words to describe this. And this should be made aware to everyone. Officers suicides are a major thing. This doesn’t help.
The department will take at least 15 years to tackle this problem. They haven’t even started. It will get a lot worse before it gets any better. Especially when I hear the police are the problem.
I just made my 20. When I go to all the in-service training (5 mandatory days screwing with start times) and do all the stupid E-learning I feel like I don’t fit in any more. You have work and just add a bad home life it equals ……. SUICIDE! Work provides half the reasons to get there. That’s why Chicago has the most suicides. Chicago is the poster boy for a badly ran Police Department. You can’t have a constant stressful life and expect people to not snap. Just 4 more and I’m gone. We are working in a bad atmosphere and a poorly ran Police Agency.
The Mayor and mini me Snelling are more worried with getting CPS more money and keep the Columbus statue from seeing day light.
Seek help because no one is going to take care of your family. Get a Psychiatrist in Indiana. Don’t tell the department shit.
The department is in a dark place. Good bosses are hard to find. How can one department have so many suicides and some say it has nothing to do with the department. Garbage! The department is the problem. Everyone working can tell horror stories of how we are treated. We are thought of as a body with a pulse. The suicide in Chicago is a direct result on how management treats the employees.
New speed camera at foster and sayre needs to be handled by the neighborhood guys after midnight. With a 40ft ladder and chain saw 30 second job.
This is a difficult topic for me SCC. I have lost a close co-worker and friend to suicide. He was a hard worker, back when we used to use the term running and gunning. He couldn’t take the pain of seeing evil every day working the streets and losing his home life because of the stress he brought home to his family. His wife threatened him with divorce and he was drinking heavy while out of the house on a restraining order. He committed suicide with his gun. He had two children. Nice home in 008. His life was out of control. He was 37, Officer Thomas Bonner, 007 District, died April 10, 1991 with just under 5 years.
I retired 2018. I stop by SCC from time to time and normally don’t post but thought this story might help someone. He was a funny guy and a great academy class mate. He was so happy to land the job. He was a CTA bus driver out of the Archer Garage who always wanted to be the Police. Please get help if your thinking about suicide. Your life does mater.
I literally have no trust for anyone on CPD. Thank you CPD for making a everyone’s life miserable except the criminals.
It’s the job stupid!
That comment was for the people running the insane asylum called CPD.
Meanwhile Superintendent Snelling said everything is good and let’s make sure uniforms have crease lines.
I seriously was going threw stuff like two years ago. I tried to commit suicide and the bullet didn’t go off. I wasn’t sure if I did it or it was a sign. Months later I was at the new academy to qualify and my gun wouldn’t fire. The range guy said it needs major cleaning. I called the suicide hot line and joined a support group. Now that time past this is the first time I said anything to people on the job. The group helped me and I just needed to talk to someone and work somethings out. I’m in a much better place and glad I didn’t do it. I realized I have a lot to live for. I somehow got an inside spot because someone got promoted. I feel like something spiral happened and I was saved for a reason.
Great post. Sad, but true. If anyone was committed to helping us maintain our mental health during our careers, then they would advocate for some form of "on-duty" therapy. It would be abused by many, but if it prevented one more suicide, then I say money well spent. Potentially opens up Pandora's box, but probably wouldn't cost any more than what the City spends on settlements annually. Call it an investment in helping officers maintain long, healthy careers. The last thing your family wants to hear is that you're not coming home after working all day to go spend time with someone else to talk out stress related to your work. They view your absence (albeit necessary for you as an officer) as just one more piece of evidence that this job has sucked you in...and is keeping you away from them.
I don't mean to sound trite or disrespectful, but it's imperative to get away from this job and all it's nonsense on a regular basis. Get out into nature, start exercising, etc... When I had issues years ago with anxiety and depression, I started running. It changed my life. There is a whole other world out there other than this job.
The far-left Democrat politicians (and the majority of voters who live here) want CPD officers dead by the age of 50. They absolutely hate the fact that we may individually (and I repeat may) get millions of dollars in pension money during our retirement years if we live long enough. They absolutely hate that only a couple of our coworkers (and our family members) died from the "pandemic". They despise the fact that this job isn't somehow more hazardous or taxing on our mental and physical health.
It's far far cheaper to bury a CPD officer before they hit retirement than pay out a ghetto lottery lawsuit (or pay a retiree who lives another 20 years). Let that sink in. So please don't give them the satisfaction. The best revenge is living well...a long life in retirement outside this city (or retiring early if you can).
Just horrible. I had to say something. A few people told me. Crazy.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, if you need help please call. The city should put the number on our ID’s. This is out of control. Now we have retired people too. PTSD. The department should be paying for officers who are retired.
Suicide is not taken seriously by the department. Why not be open and transparent. The department gives out all kinds of numbers but don’t want anyone knowing that most Officers want to or have killed them selves. I lost all respect for the Chicago Police Department and the people in charge. Bunch of low life people haters running the place.
The city doesn't care. It's one less person collecting a pension in their eyes.
I mostly blame poor supervision and management.
It’s all the oversight. The stress and pressure of not being able to make a mistake. Day in and day out constantly wears on you. Having that camera strapped to your chest all day every day capturing every single word and interaction. It’s too much.
I can’t wait to retire and move far away as possible. I feel like the department does nothing but drive officers to suicide.
The CPD created a working environment that fosters PTSD. Low morale and manpower shortages. Incompetent leadership and DEI hires and promotions. A disaster from the top to the working offer committing suicide.
It's very sad that so many think that suicide is the only relief.
Why Do More Police Officers Die by Suicide Than in the Line of Duty? - The New York Times
American policing has paid much attention to the dangers faced in the line of duty, from shootouts to ambushes, but it has long neglected a greater threat to officers: themselves. More cops kill themselves every year than are killed by suspects. At least 184 public-safety officers die by suicide each year, according to First H.E.L.P., a nonprofit that has been collecting data on police suicide since 2016. An average of about 57 officers are killed by suspects every year, according to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After analyzing data on death certificates, Dr. John Violanti, a research professor at the University at Buffalo, concluded that law-enforcement officers are 54 percent more likely to die by suicide than the average American worker. A lack of good data, however, has thwarted researchers, who have struggled to reach consensus on the problem’s scope. Recognizing the problem, Congress passed a law in 2020 requiring the F.B.I. to collect data on police suicide, but reporting remains voluntary.
Used to be a great job. The Democrat’s destroyed it.
So true.
Agree with you 100%
Hang in there. Just do the best you can.
Ha! Since when has anything resembling a code of ethics been recited in Chicago’s police Academy? The difference between how we act and how we ought to act determines the amount of stress and depression in our lives. The Chicago police department Norms are not consistent with how we ought to act as individuals and people that do act as they ought are often punished for it. It’s no surprise that so many officers feel bad about their lives because of the cesspool they are in.
You are on the solution here.
I totally agree with you...
I went in the Army as an MP at 19 & was the police for the next 37 years of my life...
I (like you all) had a front row seat, witnessing mans inhumanity to man...
I am so grateful that God has taken away almost all of my memories from that dark time...
God does not want us re-living our past or fearing for our future, He wants us to live in 'today' & in Him...
Shalom Shalom
My heart is saddened to hear so many of you on here, so disillusioned & disheartened by what you experience...
My time has past, I'm not the police anymore, but I still look upon you as my brothers & sisters...
Please try to remember, the vast majority of us 'need you' and support you. Do not get discouraged...
Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Shalom Shalom
That would definitely be a great idea maybe some of these assholes would change their tune if they are outed on here
some retirees I have known have had very seriously illnesses. Still tragic. I've had 2 good friends, police and fire, do it. Tragic. Both super tragic.
Sad but 100% true
Magnesium supplements will help you sleep at night, plus good for your circulation.
like they say, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Don't do it. Don't even think about it. It's not fair to your family. Someone said that once and it stuck - it's not fair to your family. Absolutely correct. Do whatever you have to do - quit, get another job, cheat on your wife, do heroin - whatever - only half -joking actually - but never commit suicide.
I served as an FOP unit rep and attended a suicide seminar at a National Convention. They said if you were separated, your chances of divorce were 19/20. They said retiree suicides weren't tabulated properly. Gun cleaning accidents, and the fact that many "give up" on dialysis and chemo, basically a suicide. It is more prevalent among retired, who are written up as natural causes, but it is really a "soft suicide."
We had an "Asshole of the Year" in 023. The traffic guy won it ten years in a row
I don’t believe this is a new thing, I remember my Dad and uncle’s talking about policemen killed in gun cleaning incidents. If the man didn’t spread out his kit someone did it for him. Some take the job for the wrong reasons?
Stay on topic clown
Retired here...coming into my 15th years things looked pretty bad. But you can get through it. Pray...go to work, do the best you can, given the circumstances. Stay off drugs, and limit the booze. Get out ASAP. 20+ and out. Break it up...5 months until furlo...6 more weeks until DAV and Uniform checks...5 more years until retirement. Small goals will get you there. Pay off your bills and your house. When I did, you wouldn't believe the relief I felt. There were 15 year home loans back then. CPD will be FUBAR long after you are retired. Let it be.
I agree 100%
Retired here...I'm pretty sure it was always a fucked up job. The democrats are just scorching the ground and salting the fields.
Call out the pu$$y/coward at least by initials. It was MG, still on 012 2nd watch, meritoriously sponsored by none other than Maria Peña. The gift that keeps on giving.
New "hidden" speed cameras in the north side.
I don’t recommend ‘stress leave.’ They can determine you cannot carry a gun and put you in no pay status. After your stress leave, if you get back, you’ll forever, have the stigma of being officially nuts. Better call in with the ‘flu’ or stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Stay on the medical, go to your doctor, recite the above symptoms. Get a note to stay on medical for awhile longer. If you trust our professional counciling talk to them. Never admit to stress.
Good Points, always back each other up,wait for assist car.
Respond to calls with lights and sirens, park several houses down from location
obey all traffic signals when responding to calls with lights and sirens on. This will allow offender an opportunity to flee, you can then assist victim without dealing with offender. Many victims have been abused by same person before this call.
Yes you were, God needs you to help others! Don't let Him down, He loves you. He let His son die on the cross for all of us. AMEN
The basic problem in Blue America is a lack of spirituality. This is a problem among cops in addition to the general population. Whenever I visit relatives in Chicago after being gone now for 5 years, I feel I’m in a pagan, alien nation.
I can count on 1 hand the amount of bosses I liked and or respected.
good one. most POs idea of a good boss is the boss that rubber stamps everything and let's everyone go home early. (that's not a good boss)
The epidemic needs to be studied as seriously as any other disease. Chicago police suicides have only gotten worse as the amount of services have increased. WHY??? I’m not suggesting the services are the issue, but something is seriously amiss.
Mental health? Supporting families and healthy friendships off job? Fuck you day off cancelled. Spend time with family/friend on Memorial Day weekend? Fuck you day off cancelled. Spend time with family/friend 4th of July weekend? Fuck you day off cancelled. Spend time with family/friend at a parade? Fuck you day off cancelled. Fuck you and fuck you too little bitch your to/from is denied.
Little baby ppos already crying in the academy and what’s worse the instructors don’t correct them. I feel bad for anyone having to deal with these worthless recruits once they graduate.
It isn’t the same job from when you came on.
Well said.
Just a shit-show.
All the good Sgt’s are gone. The new group are self untitled. We have a Sgt who doesn’t want to be bothered with anything.
My GF tried and only a few people knew. Don’t tell the department anything.
They are in a hopeless situation calling for help. The department doesn’t do much to prevent it. They provide the means to do it and make the officers feel hopeless.
Current supervisors are clueless.
That’s what they do.
The God Stars running the place are all political hacks and don’t even know the orders. They could care less. We are all just warm bodies filling a seat.
I’m with you!
It’s mainly Blue Shirts killing themselves. We take all the shit on the job.
The hardest part of my day is my idiot, self in titled Sgt. If she wasn’t a Sgt she would be homeless.
Yo-yo for brains has my vote
OT. Check out the front cover and page 5 of the latest FOP magazine. The lodge is setting itself up for a lawsuit by Glock. Glocks aren't the guns that are allegedly misfiring. Why couldn't they just find a stock photo of a P320 since that's the gun the city wants to ban? Who approved this going to print?
And Yo-yo for brains
I've thought about this issue for as long as I've been on and seeing the number is shocking. Ive simplified it but I think the only way out of this is the department hires enough officers that days off cancelled isn't a thing anymore. More time for officers to process PTSD from the job itself and put more time into their personal relationships at home. The ability to process what the fuck you just did for 4 days in a row requires two days alone. Also getting rid of the requirement for always being "on duty" and not really being able to keep your service weapon at work is also an issue. I think it goes like this : get angry/sad/upset about personal affairs immediately want to be relieved from feelings, gun is available to make pain go away and boom there it goes. Again super over simplification of a very complex problem but let's face facts. We need to chat about this amongst ourselves. The idea the city will ever care about a real solution rather than put a napking on a gaping wound and say " we did everything" is a pipedream. Real reform with this starts with you and your partners talking about what they think would help and then if we all can voice this especially with some studies that back it then maybe once we get a win that we actually need.
democrat politicians breaking into a ICE detention. No wonder police suicides are horrifying.
That’s how you win the game, pension checks for 30 plus years and you win.God bless.
On topic… thanks u to snelling and Talley for NOT cancelling patrols rdo’s over memorial weekend. They are finally realizing how bad cancelling days off is for patrol. Units can come and go and it isn’t as bad. Patrol gets shafted when the rdo’s get cancelled and get stuck answering jobs the whole time. Cancelling rdo’s should be reserved as an absolute last minute the city is burning type scenario. It wasn’t meant to be used “in case” something happens. In any case, 35th street is finally taking our mental well being into account and I for one am going to a family cottage and am extremely grateful to be off on my RDOs on Memorial Day weekend and to spend time with my elderly parents.
PR was a good man
Suicide is sad but blaming a some rando white shirt for someone's self-delete isn't fair to the sergeant. I really doubt that sergeant is a mind reader and to be frank I don't believe the sergeant should be concerned about some rando p/o's problems. Everyone has problems. Get promoted and you'll get to enjoy 4 hour tours and live a fulfilling life. Until then suck it up butter cup. I'm might be a little insensitive but life isn't fair. Get promoted and life improves.
I feel the Chicago Police Department has become a backwards organization. Thanks to all of the above comments that I totally agree with. Management has become the biggest brake down of our organization. I have even lost respect of most of them. I haven’t had I morale in 14 years. I have 15 years on. The city is in a death spiral and crime is one of the biggest reasons. The whole thing is messed up. It’s the system. Suicide is one of the index’s for the Heath of the department. We got a grade of F. Morale is another one that would be an F. This is an area that management controls. Management is directly responsible for are failing. I currently respect very few bosses.
NOT ILLINOIS NOT LEO, but I had 2 times in my life when I thought the same. It was the bosses. Total pricks in most cases. There were a few, very few who were good. I watched some of these bosses have their positions "eliminated" or demoted. I saw others crapped on and never rise anywhere. I was a grunt and I made more than they did (with overtime), retired earlier and never found the white shirt appealing. Workers were crapped on, facts changed and stabbed in the back. We all were. Unqualified a-holes all. I saw co-workers broken down. One boss once told me "You were right. You stayed in the union." I left at 59 and never once looked back. Never. I had a job I truly loved. In the end, all went 180 degrees. Now...I'd never even look at that job, with what I know. Society has changed, since I began in 1980 and retired in 2013. The doctors-medical all had changed. Woke-ness was coming in and I knew it. Since retirement 3 people I talk to from there. I don't know the answer. Many left in disgust. I shut up, said nothing, didn't socialize as they'd stab me in the back. Guess I was a loner.
Not everyone hates you. The thugs and the media are a-holes. They always were. (Watch old Westerns!) I don't know if I'd want to be a cop today. These people out there are bastards, S O B s and the like. Too, cameras everywhere,
and if the "good and fair" company wanted to get rid of you, they'd find a way.
I guess I'd just count the time until I was gone and don't be a dead body for CPD. They clearly (from what I've read here for years), hate you. You are led by morons, and going from Jane Byrne to Conehead is a stretch! I'm not being funny: God have His shield over you all.
Tip Cook County Sheriff facing new inmate on staff sexual assault lawsuits just few yrs after Dart office settled for near 100m with female staff. Dart has no control over jail shockingly is running again.

It’s interesting reading so many comments about how poor the leadership is on the department. Everyone feels the same way. The merit problem children keep promoting more merit problem children and thus we are stuck with this horrible upper echelon that does not listen to or speak up for the officers. Everything the do is to cover the departments ass. Nothing to help the officers. Think of the little petty things that require TRR’s now. Then that is all second guessed by the sgts, then Lts, then tred, then copa if any of them feel u even said something inappropriate to the jag off. If they wanted to help us, they’d make the job easier on us. It has gotten so difficult to just do our job that nobody wants to do it anymore. The pressure is real. The stress it creates is real. It builds up until u just can’t take it anymore.
Can anyone name something, even one thing, the department has implemented in the last 5 years that has had the officers well being in mind? To help make the job easier on the officers?
I agree
They are a joke. Also insensitive and concerned with kissing azz to keep their spot. Imho
I wouldn’t take a Glock-even if it was free.
Next month it’ll be nine years since KWZ made the permanent solution to a temporary problem. Kim is a just a faint memory for some. For others, she is in their minds everyday
Most likely a DEI employee as they are hired off race not ability
Couple HS pitchers with a fastball will do the trick. 15 seconds and black hoodies
He is the biggest piece of $hit. He has been that way his whole career. Not going to a 10-1 is crazy. Especially a sgt. When he is on the street he is to busy going to his house in 012. You think we don’t notice. At least the Sgt’s on days in 012 are good. They actually know what the hell is going on. The Lts suck on days. Everyone thinks 012 is the land of the promised land it may not be as violent as 007 but it is busy and we are so short handed. I hope sgt MG finds a new home. Useless merit hack. I am sure LAPA needs this fool. The other Sgt’s should be calling him out.
CPD does a terrible job of screening. Lots of soft people on the job now. It’s not about quality. It’s what they can get. Gets worse every day.
Name one American city run by DEI peoples that’s in good shape ? I will wait
Have you tried chamomile tea, the real herb raw is better than the overpriced teabags. If that doesn't help try lemon balm, or lavender tea. You might look at the website, earthclinic for other guidance and other solutions for your sleep problems. Best of luck.
The DOA isn't likely to flee. Receiving in-coming fire? EVERYONE goes until your team is safe.
Seek help my brother/sister. Don’t let the bad days win. Talk to anyone EAP, a peer support member in your unit. your friends, psychologists, or church.
In recent years, that job has only grown harder as cities like Chicago have become more violent and their residents have turned against policing itself.
Wait till UofC, matrix consulting, truleo ai come in a flag officers for every little thing found on bwc video. Cutting off someone talking is rude a prelude to a use of force.
The suicide rate will really skyrocket.
Also, the always on-duty mentality needs to go.
I sure hope this ages well, there are still several weeks to go until Memorial Day weekend

Every single person you will talk to from EAP/Peer Support understands exactly what you are talking about. Simply, it’s cops talking to cops. Just try it. Anonymous always and FREE
You’re forever in your brother’s heart and thoughts. The night you drove up by the Metra tracks was a cry for help. Your fellow blue and white shirts didn’t do one god damn thing. Everyone was too afraid of doing anything but coding it.
“Thermidorian reaction,” A strong shift to the right influenced about high criminality and social disorder. Unfortunately, it’s going to take increased crime and disorder in traditionally “safe” neighborhoods to regain the support for an effective police force. I thought an expecting mother having a baby beat out of her by a band of miscreants in River North (and reported by the media) would have shifted some views, but that was quickly forgotten by the populace. Unfortunately, I think it’s going to get a whole lot worse before we are able to get a little bit better.
How ironic that fat fill was part of the management problem in promoting his family thru cheating, promoting idiots for political favors, and surrounding himself with kiss asses who will protect him by covering up corruption. And now this same Marquette ten rat dubbed himself the head of the Chicago police memorial fund. Ironic, isn't it?
Phil is for Phil. Always has been, always will be.
Agree with post I had less than 5 supervisors that I respected in my 30 years on the job. It's a pathetic department and the overall problem starts w management. Always said I loved the work but hated the company.
I remember, it is there everyday
Amen
Most are domestic related.... anyway: Professions with Higher Suicide Rates (approximate ranking):
1. Construction workers – High physical risk, economic instability, and substance use issues.
2. Miners and oil/gas extraction workers – Isolated work environments and dangerous conditions.
3. Agricultural workers and farmers – Financial stress, isolation, and long hours.
4. Medical doctors (especially physicians) – High stress, burnout, and access to lethal drugs.
5. Veterinarians – Compassion fatigue, euthanasia-related stress, and drug access.
6. Law enforcement and first responders – Exposure to trauma, shift work, and stigma around mental health.
7. Military personnel and veterans – PTSD, access to firearms, and cultural stigma.
8. Dentists – Work-related stress, isolation, and access to sedatives.
9. Artists, designers, entertainers, and media professionals – Unstable employment and emotional strain.
10. Legal professionals (lawyers, judges) – High pressure, long hours, and perfectionism.
These rankings are based on suicide rates per 100,000 people within each profession
Find a psychiatrist and go through your insurance. Don’t wait for the department to save you it’s just a job-nothing more.
I started feeling no stress when I stopped giving a fuck. Answer your calls. write reports. a few parkers and ignore the idiot white shirts. Get your pension and run
It’s bad but it’s nothing like Fallujah.
Domestic problems by far, then financial and health problems
Old Sgt once told me. Dont let the bosses get to you, they come and go and listen to the rules and work within them. When the bosses come out with rule by that times the po’s have 5 ways to skirt them. Worked for and a lot of my friends and we are all enjoying retirement
If you are thinking of killing yourself go on medical. Get treatment. If the treatment doesn't work you must leave CPD. Become a day trader, teacher, exercise coach, house painter, realtor, plumber, etc. There are hundreds of things to do besides being the police. Being the police is NOT for everyone!
Great idea!!💜 In addition instead of corrupt gold stars picking Merit. We should be able to vote on Merit promotions like we vote for our FOP President or the new District Council positions.
The early ducks for those who toss the sergeants’ assholes just adds to the gloom and doom. Forget about the duck for those who routinely stay late. Maybe I should identify as a cutesy female po
Amen to that!
Hang in there pal. Did 28 years in Homicide. Some times the demons don’t go away but with the help of family and friends they go for a trip for a while
Disagree. I love the ….. always being on duty mindset. However, jetting off to a remote location for vacations are also wonderful. The idea of checking off mentally once you leave the district is a recipe for getting carjacked, robbed, or worse. Always have your head on a swivel!
No memo is coming to fix you. No boss is going to save you. That’s not bad news, it’s actually the best news you’ll hear because it means you’re it.
Stop waiting for a department-wide awakening. It’s not happening. Not because they hate you. Not because they’re heartless. But because they can't live your life for you. If you're still blaming "the department", ask yourself how long you're going to let that excuse run your life. Your family still needs you. Your brain still needs rest. And your spirit is dying under the weight of your apathy and "toughness." Keep pointing fingers if that feels good, but just know it’s costing you more than it’s helping. This victim mindset is poison.
The job is hard. The system is flawed. But you're not helpless unless you choose to be. That’s the truth. You don’t need a policy change to fix this. You need to be real with you. Nothing wrong with being scared to ask for help. There's a great life out there, but you have to step outside of your comfort zone.
Is your Sgt. a DEI hire?
If you’re married, you need to be talking with your spouse. Decide how much you and he or she share CBS or HBO version. Don’t bottle this crap up, remember this is a job and a job only. You are more than the job. Don’t forget who you were before you came on. Get reconnected with family and friends. Have healthy outlets like hobbies and exercise. Reach out for help if you need to whether through the department or outside the department but don’t become another statistic. There are people that care about cops and want to help them. Over at the academy they have a wall of resources and over in room 103/105 where they do CIT training, they have a bunch of pamphlets as well. They also have outside instructors who come in and teach those CIT courses who know how to help cops. There was this one guy who taught and actually gave out his cell phone and helps to get brothers and sisters the help they need. He also will talk with them until they’re ready to get help too. Think his name was Nick.
Agree. Quit the job and then work on having a wonderful life. Don't quit life.
The one who collects the most pension checks is the key to a wonderful life.
