Happy Columbus Day!

All of you lucky enough to be RDO, enjoy celebrating either (A) the world's greatest Italian explorer, (B) the world's greatest con man who tricked a Spanish king and queen into sponsoring a trip to "discover" a world known for years to vikings and irish mariners or (C) the world's greatest racist of all time, paving the way for the exploitation and murder of tens of thousands of "peaceful" native peoples. Just a guess, but (C) is probably Lefty's choice of celebration.

If you're working, enjoy the 8+4 hours of your choice.

Posting will be sporadic as we celebrate the holiday in the manner of our choosing. (probably B as we are cynics.)
UPDATE: Knock it off already with the questions about Washington. Not even once has anyone answered your inane questions. It's obviously a non-starter. It's also obvious that either (A) you got shut out in Washington or (B) you dated one of the girls who went and she was unfaithful. Get over it. Grow a set and stop trying to date coppers. Go find a nice school teacher or meet an ER nurse like real men do and stop with the DC bulls#*^. GET. OVER. IT.

Yes SCC you are correct, I choose not to be among those who honor the slave trader-mass murder, Christopher Columbus.

I remember reading an article in college saying Columbus made Hitler look like a juvenile deliquent. I wouldn't go that far, but to have a federal holiday in honor of Columbus is a slap in the face to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the only other individual to have a federal holiday in their name.

Columbus is responsible for the extinction of the Taino tribe which had lived in the late 14th century in what is now Haita/Domicician Republic. He and his ship mates killed or imprisoned probably half of the population.

His "excursions" to the New World were made for gold and slaves, not for travel and exploration. I'll donate my 4 hours profit to the funs for the victims of the tragedy in Pakistan/India.

I dont know where they encountered this drunk but they shoulkd have left him to pee in the hallway or disturb patrons in the business or where ever he was

Today I shall instead join my comrades in Cuba for their annual celebration of their "Commencement of the Wars of Independence," and remember Carlos Manuel, one of the guerilla leaders who fought Spain and gained Cuba its freedom.

Lefty (Or Comrade),

Its an atrocity that there is a federal holiday honoring King. A complete waste of funds that could be better spent on welfare programs for those who King worked. Lets compare who had more of an impact on this country and is therefore more deserving of the holiday.

Columbus: Through his journey he really got the ball rolling for exploration and settling in this country. Without him, your family would still be in Ireland and bombing civilians, as members of the IRA. The blacks who King helped would still be in Africa facing starvation and constant internal conflict and war. Our country might never have been the great place it is without Columbus.

King: Helped make the lives better for less than 13% of the population. He did this by spewing dissent and divisiveness. He did a great job of helping his people at the expense of the rest of the country, and his legacy of race-baiting and the culture of victimization that he espoused continues in the works of his disciples (headed by Jessee). Of Kings' works, the vast majority was to help his people and his people alone. Why should the entire country celebrate this?

It amazes me that the last genius, who does not have the stones to sign his name, writes so well. It is obvious by his perception of history that he has never read a book. Start with Curious George, then Peanuts, then when things start to make sense, try the Hardy Boys. Then get back to us. Take the hood and sheet off. Might make it easier to read by the light of the burning cross.

"a chiselled stone in Minnesota really does date to 1362 and is conclusive proof that Scandinavians reached the New World at least 130 years before Columbus, a Cornell University linguist asserts in a new book about the notorious "Kensington rune-stone." See Cornell University website for full discussion. That shouldn't detract from Columbus' successes. I salute any of the explorers from 800 AD and onward since most of the world was unmapped and travelling always presented significant risks. It's interesting to note that it was only Europeans who had the collective intelligence, courage and drive to branch out, putting their lives at risk, and brave the unknown. It wasn't just about money, riches and gold - eventhough that was a factor. Each and every civilization has a dirty history and committed "attrocities" - you can't single Columbus out as a "slave trader-mass murderer". The Native Americans in Minnesota and the Dakotas were murdering Scandinavian settlers well into the 1890s. The US post office was censoring outgoing mail from these settlers and removing any mention of the massacres so that immigration from Norway and Sweden would not be interrupted. Happy Columbus Day! RDO are my 3 favorite letters.

Laurence P -
Although 9:53 poster takes a cynical view on MLK's contributions, I'd say that he certainly did nothing that makes him deserving of a national holiday in his honor. Calling him a klansman and such is only throwing away the baby with the bathwater. In Nixon's autobiography, he wrote that Jesse Jackson insinuated himself into MLK's inner-circle only to line his own pockets and to make a name for himself. He goes on to say that Jesse made sure he "smeared himself with King's blood" in an attempt to ride the Leftist hippies who, erroneously and naively, believe that we're all equal. JFK was a hawk and in favor of smaller government (to his credit) but if he'd lived he'd have been judged an, over-all, lack-luster president. The only reason he is such a personality is that he was murdered. The same can be said of MLK.
In my book anyone who filters and defines all their beliefs, judgements and opinions through their race is, by definition, a racist. We all work with and know outstanding people who happen to be black. We also have seen the 20% who are pieces of shit and, deservedly carry the "N" moniker. So give the guy (9:53) a break - his only crime is cynicism....Name calling is for Leftists and brain-washed liberals...I thought this forum was based on principles of rational debate?

Bluecenturian-

By your moniker I believe you to be the police, as am I. From your thoughts, I can review many things I have also heard or read over the years. Like all history, I take it for what it is, a collection of stories. While Nixon was the most important politician of the second half of the American century, I could not care less about his opinions on Jessie or MLK. You see, it's not my community. I have no dog in the fight. While I do not wish ill on any American, I do not believe my humble little life has much impact on the course of success or failure on Chicago's streets. I work dutifully, I take risks, I have a great deal of fun with my commerades and I go home, and I try to make sure my partners come home as well. I also agree that JFK benefits from some cultural revisionism. The silver spoon was the most dominant part of the Kennedy persona, perhaps the ill gotten gains of a bootlegger caused the guilt that made the children be so rightous. My opinion is that movements just occur due to overwhelming forces that can no longer be controlled. Technology, transportation or communication meet the need for change. Somone happens to be in office at that time. Washington, Lincoln,FDR, JFK, GW Bush. Of course GW is not the mind of the others mentioned, he does happen to be in the hot seat at the time of tremendous change.

I did not invoke the image of the klansmen in a typical kneejerk reaction to some slight to African Americans as I believe your defense rallied against. Again, I do not pretend to understand their plight or culture. The Klan's love of humanity was not limmitted to blacks you see. They hated and killed Irish Catholics as well, of which I am one. Many Catholics have probably forgotten this. But the racist piece of garbage, who may or may not be the police, chose this forum to spew a couple of jabs to see what sticks. I laugh at his pathetic little life as I am sure he takes great pleasure in insulting people lesser than he. Though I doubt there are any.

I see you trashing 9:53 and continuously name-calling, but I have yet to hear you rebut anything he/she said. I for one am interested in hearing what important things King did for anyone besides the negroes.

Another thing, you pick on him for not putting his name down. 99% of the people out here don't do so. For that matter, your name could be Joe Schmoe. Because you take a moniker doesn't make you a courageous person! You appear to be a reasonably intelligent person, so stick to the facts and cut out the name-calling.

The history of America is one of slavery...white slavery...do you really think all the white "pilgrims" came to America willingly? -perhaps as many as two-thirds of the original American colonists came here, not of their own free will, but kidnapped, shanghaied, impressed, duped, beguiled, and yes in chains,,,,The controlled media focus exclusively on the enslavement of the blacks. The impression is given that only whites bear responsibility for enslaving blacks and that only blacks were slaves. In fact, Blacks in Africa engaged in extensive enslavement of there own kind. Slavery was endemic in Africa with entire tribes being enslaved through conquest on a regular basis. When Arabic, Jewish and White slave traders arrived on the coast of sub-Saharan Africa they seldom if ever had to travel inland and fight or pursue their quarry. They were met on the coast by Africans more than willing to sell slaves to them by the thousands. And in America, records show that Black slaves were owned , not by just a few wealthy whites, but by free Blacks and Cherokee Indians. In some cases, these Blacks and Indians even owned White slaves. White slaves were actually owned by Blacks and Indians in the South to such a extent that the Virginia Assembly passd the following law in 1670:"It is enacted that no negro or Indian though baptized and enjoying there own freedom shall be capable of any such purchase of Christians." The records of the time reveal that free Blacks often owned Black slaves themselves. In 1717, it was proposed that a qualification for election to the South Carolina assembly was to be the ownership of one White man." (From They were White and They were slaves).....Today not a tear is shed for the sufferings of millions of our enslaved forefathers. 200 years of white slavery in America has been almost completely obliterated from the collective memory of the American people.....because to remembr our forefathers sufferings and circumstances would destroy the myth of unique Black victimhood and universal white guilt,..........

I can't help my self. It is like going into the same bathroom stall every day just to get the latest gossip and jokes. But,since I have offended the fragile sensabilities of the 9:53 poster, I must continue.

9:53 wrote: "He (MLK) did this by spewing dissent and devisivness".

Really, Did you ever hear of Brown V. Board of Education. Which came first, Gov. George Wallace declaring he would stand on the steps of the PUBLIC school to block a handful of teenage black kids from entering or the " I have a Dream Speech.

How about this, Rosa Parks and the Burmingham riots, or MLK having his house burned to the ground while his wife and kids were home and then his eventual assasination.

Divisivness is as American as democracey and capitalism. America is not a melting pot, it is a salad bowl. Different ethnic groups functioning under a common system. The ideal is to make it all work. Blacks are not the only group to benefit from the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Frederick Douglass was more important and intellectually superior to MLK but he did not have the benefit of television broadcasting his speeches. Again, it comes down to timing.

In the next decade or so the Latino poulation will reach a level where the federal government will scurry to find a Latino candidate t name a national holiday. I am not versed in Central or South American history so perhaps 9:53 can lead the campaign on who should be honored.

Please do not confuse me as being liberal. I agree that most of the 1960's grand design for our country has turned out to be a dismal failure. I believe people become dependent on welfare and I believe man is inately greedy. Combine these things and you create just more fraud, corruption and exploitation. Housing was a failure, Soc Sec is in the red, and our omniscient media plays one race against another at every turn simply to make a buck.

While I am disgusted by the celebrity welfare kings; JJ jr., Sharpton and the westside minister mob, and by the open and notorious anti-semite Lou Lou Farakhan, I understand it as part of the game. Public life is just a money grab. Some are just more discrete than others. I suggest everyone who reads this site read Thomas Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities". It nails every frustration those of us in the justice system experience, and tought me that the hipocracey is an American experience, not just a Chicago thing.

My friend 9:53 also wrote: "Without him (C.Columbus), your family would still be in Ireland and bombing civilians, as members of the IRA".

Again, Really. I guess we must assume that the writer has personal knowledge of the ethnic, religious and political identity of Lefty's entire family tree. You see they are not all inclusive. You know that, right??? If so, I can take this line as a joke and I'm over it. Ha Ha. BOOOOM!!!! Just kidding. But if not, one might think that comment to be , well, RACIST.

In closing, I appreciate 10:39 referring to me as "reasonably intelligent". I am proud of that and intend on printing it up and showing my mother. By my spelling, punctuation and lack of coherant thought you may now see this to be a great exaggeration. I have always been an average student who suffers from below average effort. But I do listen and observe.

I have been fortunate in my short life to have been to Germany, Russia,Poland, England, Ireland, Canada, Mexico and much of the good ole USA. What I believe is that poverty, alcoholism and drug abuse are universal in our industrial, western world. Every population has 10%-20% that is plagued by this . No ethnic group handles it better than any other. Some countries just have more money to throw at the problem. So I thank God for my blessings and pray for those I know.

I will not appologize for name calling for I found 9:53 post simply wrong and in need of a good calling out. While 90% do post anaonymous, few play the stupid race game on a sight that, like it or not, represents us, CPD, as a cohessive group.

Every ethnic group struggles to maintain its individual identity in our society. Our institutions of family and religion are assaulted every day in the media and by goofy poiticians and judges. Our histories fade and are threatened with revisionism in the academic world.

If 30 million people find a little pride and comfort in the memories of one mans ideals, who should stand in the way of that being recalled once a year.

Not me. I have enough on my plate.
Enough said.

Laurence

A bit of food for thought that your last post brought to mind:

We already have Cinco De Mayo here. Why is it that we are in America celebrating Mexican Independence Day? If you want to disagree and bring up St.Pats Day, that is a celebration of one man, not a celebration of Ireland.

I had a Latino friend tell me that Mexicans need not adhere to our immigration laws because we stole parts of this counry from Mexico. He stated that there is a large segment of the Latino population who agree. I know that has nothing to do with what you posted, but its an interesting tidbit.

And finally, Lefty is of Irish descent, and is on record supporting the IRA and their works. He is very open with his views, so just ask him. Shocking, huh????? How about that for hypocrisy!!!!!!!! Mr. peace & love supporting a terrorist organization.

100 years before the Spanish Invasion the Tainos were challenged by an invading South American Tribe the Caribs..they raided Taino settlements for slaves(especially female) and the bodies for their completion of the rites of cannibalism...some Ethologists argue that the preeminence of the Tainos shaken by the attacks of the Caribs was already jeopardized by the time of the Spanish occupation...In 1511 the Tainos and Caribs joined forces to oust the Spanish the revolt was ended brutally by Govenor Ponce de Leon....Columbus and his shipmates did not kill and imprision half the population.....columbus was helped by the Tatino tribe when his ship the Pinta broke up and left a small colony of Spaniards behind..who when he returned a year later were found to have been exterminated...by other tribes, according to the Tatinos....

Larry, sorry Lawrence, it's called spellcheck, look into it!
If you insist on pontificating at least bolster your argument by using the King's (whoops, sorry IRA man) english and its gramatical intricicies. If you truly are of Irish descent, and are as intelligent as you try to pass off to be, you must know that your own people were slaves longer than any black man. In fact, as recently as the 1960's, signs stating that Irish need not apply could still be seen when white leftists, like yourself were running around begging for the civil rights of the black man. The Reverend Martin Luther King? How can you preach the word of God and hate? Talk about the root of the problem, if you want to end racism and preach love of all mankind, start by practicing it and quit being a race of hypocrites.

If anyone is a hypocrite it's 6:08.Dr.King did preach love of all mankind, but he never preached hate against any group of people. It seems to me you have your history confused.Maybe you're refering to Malcom X.Who did make racist comments while a member of the N.O.I.But even he came to realize that hate and racisum is wrong under any circumstance. We are all members of one race, the HUMAN RACE.Only our skin color and/or our culture makes us different.I'm not saying we should hold hands and sing"Cum Bi Ya",But we need to focus on what's really important,The fact that everyone on this site is a AMERICAN.If you don't think so,Ask any Soldier or Marine who has served in the Middle East. They'll tell you all the terrorists care about is killing Americans.White,Black, Latino,Asian, makes no difference. An American is an American is an American. We all need to remember that little fact.
