Wednesday Quick Hits

We're brainstorming for our next BIG post. Something that might be able to push us over the 1,000 hits a day mark. We came close Monday - 954. Use this as an open thread for suggestions and enjoy these quick hits.
  • Gladiator rooms at Juvie? What kind of money they could be made if they set up cage matches in the lockups? We hear Ultimate Fighting Championship is looking for fighters all the time - may a lockup keeper could "discover" the next champ and rep for them.
  • Yet another city hall aide resigns under a cloud of conflicts of interest. That brings the total to 14. Fran "mini-scandal" Spielman will look into whether the aide was compensated for EARNED vacation time rather than why all daley's people seem to resign under clouds of suspicion.
  • Blago continues to shine as the protege of his father-in-law and product of city hall upbringing. Former Blago volunteers are getting caught up in influence scandals, too. Is there anything in this state that's legit? Between local and state government, the department, the unions, and more, does anyone honest EVER get ahead?
  • The mayor's efforts to drive the business and tourism industry out of the city hits a roadblock as business leaders strenuously object to his plan to raise taxes ONCE AGAIN. Pardon our question, but didn't he just sell the skyway for something like 2 billion dollars? Did he spend it all already? Or is he using that to payout lawsuits to people who sue?
  • Coverage of the Carter Harrison and Lambert Tree Award winners

FYI:

Based on documented data, the extrapolations and comparisons between the fraudulent and legitimate components of the three-part promotional "process" (EXAMSCAM) for lieutenant, I report the following for your scrutiny re the CPD's version of "merit".

Meticulous calculations disclosed that only a quarter to a third of those promoted were legitimate. The overwhelming majority of the promotees, many of whom were/are "nice persons", were promoted for reason(s) other than the Merriam-Webster's definition of "merit".

More significantly, the fraudulently promoted dashed the hopes of scores of deserving sergeants. To add insult to injury, LeRoy Martin's outrage was compounded by the fact that many of the brightest and most deserving street cops were arbitrarily "flunked" despite perfect and near-perfect scores in the legitimate components.

I could elaborate. Unfortunately, the apathy and/or obliviousness of clueless taxpayers, the shameless media, the courts, your unions and indeed, many police officers themselves, frustrate any possibility of meaningful reforms.

Aside from being a taxpayer, this is no longer MY problem. Notwithstanding, my sympathies go out to the exemplary blue shirts, detectives and supervisors that will be denied advancement because of the deeply-entrenched corruption and fraud that perpetuates the displacement of excellence with sycophants, sociopaths, bungling political hacks and even some "nice persons", some of whom have no business being a police officer, let alone a "boss".

I might add that among others, the following individuals were completely aware of EXAMSCAM. Some merely ignored it. Others actively participated in the ensuing COVER-UP.

Mayor Richard M. Daley, then
Channel 5 "investigative reporter" Peter Karl, then Corporation Counsel Susan S. Sher, then U.S. Attorney Anton Valukas, the late Jim Gallagher, then a city editor for the Chicago Tribune, aldermen, most CPD members, particularly the "promotees" and "exempts".

Did you ever notice that of all of our major U.S. cities, Chicago alone appears to take a perverse PRIDE in municipal corruption?

As I see it, the courts, Noelle Brennan, Michael Shakman and Peter Fitzgerald are your only hopes of dragging the CPD into the 21st Century, albeit, kicking and screaming.

"Dat's Chicago!"

CORRECTION:

"Peter" Fitzgerald should read "PATRICK" Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

I regret my error.

Hey Northside, Remember when you rode around in your squad with your Dog in the passenger seat? (025). Till the D/C saw it. You were 25's first canine Sgt.

Bogus? I go to work and see all this going on and you say bogus?
We work in an environment of corruption and fear, but we still go out there to do what little we can for the people. Do remember why you became the POLICE? Can you be that kind of copper in this environment?

Bogus??? Explain.

Anything but. Northern is the real deal.

Retired Sgt. Northern

Still avoiding the truth.

Is it or is it not a FACT that on occasion while working the first watch in the 25th District that you were accompanied in a dept. vehicle by an UNAUTHORIZED four-legged passenger?

We demand an answer!

We need more people like John Northern, the man never hurt anyone and has a set of balls. The Lts test was rigged only a chosen few new the correct answer notify the watch commander, in reality everything was handled by the desk crew.

You young ones will never learn, they have taken any chance we had away on competitive exams. Do you know whats next. The Pension and medical, watch how this bastard is going to steal it, suddenly their thinking of raising the retirement age again. How many of these old dudes coming on the job are in the laborers pension. Bend over and take it up your rectum if you accept these merit promotions.

Go to an awards ceremony its pathetic the way the family in non patrol units get awards monthly.

When Northside was a dick, his dog was probably involved in more on-view felony arrests than most bosses made in their whole careers.

Every copper knows what he's saying is the truth. Why rag on the guy? We could use a lot more stand-up guys like him.

You go, Johnny Northside

(We worked together a few times, John)

The best thing about northside is that he can use his name cause he's retired. Most of us don't dare use our name. Any fool knows why.

the more i think about it, that was a cool idea for the sgt to send that email to Cline and the city. The evil bastards would swear they never even heard of the blogs.

wouldn't be funny if the dept. was put in the recievership of the federal courts.

RECEIVERSHIP!!!

GREAT IDEA. Let's hope Brennan, Shackman and Fitzgerald are reading this.

This city can never be trusted. By hook or crook, they must get their people in as bosses.

I'm another retiree of sorts. I'd certainly use my name on at least half my comments if it wasn't shared by family members who I fear would suffer retaliation.

While Sgt. Northern (ret.) can get a bit repetitive, I think he has done and is doing a great service for the membership (overall membership, not those who benefit from the current cesspool environment).

Ok, enough of the Sgt. Nothern love-fest. Lets get down to business. Did Burke ever do Willie the Whale while in 025?

10/05/2005 04:35:00 PM

I agree. He's retired and obviously doesn't give a fuck. He gives credibility to what thousands of us want to say. He's got a super rep as a street cop. If I was retired, I'd use my name.
Enough of this clout bullshit is enough. The only whiners are the suckholes that need clout because there worthless as police.

Guys who finished below me made it and are now captains

Guys who took the lT test and got perfect scores on th ewritten were given the oral, whic was 80% of the grade and flunked
And I mean guys with maters degrees and doctorates I know of one in particular

U.S. Atty. Pat Fitzgerald finds this site very interesting to say the least. "The Chicago Way" needs a BIG CLOUT upside its head. The Trib and the media won't give coverage to generations of police promotion scandal since they're in on it. Ask Peter Carl. What's FOP doing on this?

So what if Northern took his 4 legged dog on patrol, better than alot of the 2 legged I've had to babysit for 8 hours. When Coffey was the d/c of 004, he brought his 4 legged with him on midnight calls.

We cannot tolerate the behavior of Coffey and Northern. I propose that we get our torches and pitchforks and march on their cribs at midnight. Justice cries out that both Coffey and Northern be burned at the stake with their mutts.

To all of you who put down Northen for his bitterness about the "promotion exam"
Besides the fact that we now live with these clout heavy cretins that the Dept picked to lead us, our careers are stunted.

In about 2009, when you are finally eligible to take a Sgts test, Id like to see how youre going to like the feel of a little Department dick in your asses.

Some of us studied our asses off for those tests in between crossing you to school only to find the test was a big scam.

Its not easy to just get over.

Just remember this post when the department pulls the train on you.

Thanks to all you new guys for saving the CPD from drowning in its waste.

Most who post seem to believe that government has much more power than they are authorized to exact.

If that was true how does anyone explain leaks and prosecution of those who believe that they have more power that the law allows.

Compromise = corruption; by definition. Beyond compromise is criminal. Self-interest is the downfall.

Compromise is government.

The media is interested only when they can meet their deadline or if they can win awards, gain reputation and enhance their bargaining power. Nothing different from any other labor pool.
