Natasha Korecki reports on the 3rd anti corruption squad added to the local feebs with increased manpower, resources and the best part, a willingness to look into places not previously explored AND subpoena high officials.

The Academy should spend more time teaching criminal procedure. You see what some Officers write -- its messed up stuff. The ADS of IAD recently stated that one of the biggest problems for the Department is that Officers are not accurately reporting where items are recovered from on the case report. Do Not help Devine win a re-election with a high conviction rate. In 99.9% of cases, if you write it how it happened, you will be ok. You may not get a conviction at trial - but you not be indicted or sued for false arrest. Leave the arguing and bull shitting to the ASA. Last week, charges were denied in a shooting/gun case b/c the officer lost sight for a brief second of the offender. The bosses, as usually, were panzies - later stated that if you didn't lose sight, charges would have been approved, but we (department) "do not want to embellish on your reports" - then did they say it? The bosses must stand up for us -- all we (police officers) need to charge someone is 51% - that it is more probable than not that the shithead committed the crime. If you get caught lying, the ASA will have no problem indicting you, even if the reason of your “little white lie” was to put a gang-banger, dope dealer in jail. And, the defense attorney will refer (for a referral fee) your case to a civil rights atty. To sue you in civil court. Can you say bye, bye to your casa? Make the bosses do their job – you may have to explain to them what their job is, and make the ASA argue the case. If you think the feds are going to “overlook” a little discrepancy in the reports, you're wrong.

As someone who has worked in the Academy in the past we do teach criminal procedure. There are certain requirements that must be met before someone graduates. That being said a lot of recruits really don't listen or care. This is just a stop on their way to their real jobs. Unfortunately when College became a requirement we lost all the good High School people who wanted to be the Police and instead got those who were not smart enough to cut it in the career of their choice and took this job on an interim basis. Remember the old saying you can lead a horse to water but cant make it drink. And trying to get a recruit fired for incompetence is next to impossible. When Scheinkel (SP?) was ADS he actually tried to weed out the bad apples but unfortunately he was replaced by one of the Mayors yes men. The Academy is still reeling from his tenure there. I hope the new ADS can at least bring a little pride back there.

The Academy is a fucking embarassment!!! it is a total joke and the "instructors" there have an average of less than 8 years on the job and they are there telling "war stories" that never happened to them but what they heard from other coppers and acting like tough guys to the recruits.....I was there a couple of weeks ago and I saw this one asshat instructor flaunting his shit through the halls and talking shit to try to impress this female recruit....I was like give me a fucking break kid you haven't even been on this job more than 7 years....and the physical training is a joke too....have you seen the gym classes lately?? laughable!!! they are training pussies NOT police!

Are you stoned? he's as bad as the rest of them! We need a decent canidate that is going to do (at the least) a good job for the city. I'd prefer one that likes city workers, but "we cant always get what we want, but if you try sometime, you get what you need!" Gutierrez is a P.R. version of Bobby Rush, fuck bolth of them! It seems like the far reaching power of our beloved mayor has shipped off all of the decent canidates who might have posed a threat to re-election years ago. As a Det ive seen many a copper get caught in an untruth. States attorney will look the other way Judges will look the other way. You just have to know how to sell it. new guys....learn from the old timers you dont know it all and they can help you. There are some coppers that think everyone should be with the "program" but unfortunately everyone isnt. So learn how to beat the program and you'll be fine

Ok, just to throw my 2 cents in not that it matters to anyone.
The academy is a joke, we went from a paramilitary organization under Shenkel (pardon the spelling) to a college campus where the instructors could not discipline the recruits. Part of the academy's discipline I experenced 20 years ago was the necessity to understand the chain of command and respect for the higher ranks. Today these kids come out questioning the authority of the supervisors and they all think that they know everything. There is a lot to be said for putting the kids in a lean and rest because they will learn not to screw up. The military would break you down to make you understand where you went wrong.
The other problem is the Department doesn't support the FTO program. This program is important for the education of our kids coming out of the academy. Being a former FTO, I took my job seriously and tried to teach as much as I could to the kids in the short time I had them. The FTO program should be a career path in this Department just like detective, evidence tech, or K9 officer. The problem is the Department looks to screw with the FTO's causing them to quit. When the person in charge of the FTO program gets moved or promoted the program just gets shoved aside until it gets "revamped" again. When the Department decides to make the FTO program a viable program you will see better recurits coming from their training. Part of the blame for the Department's non-committal to the FTOs I give to the FTO association.
When they first brought the program back the guys that headed the association tried to strong arm the Department and hijack the contract negotiations. I believe this caused both the FOP and the Department to turn their backs to the FTO program. Not for nothing but I think that is where the problems lie.
Ok, That's enough for now. I will take my 2 cents and add $1.98 to go get on the bus.
I know the Department would never do this, but how about making all the instructors at the academy be FTO's? And I mean legit, passing the test FTO's.
Maybe after every 5 or 6 month training cycle, the instructors could then go back to the street and work with the recruits, then back to the academy, in a rotation.
This way at least we wouldn't have some of the unqualified people teaching there. NOT ALL OF THEM ARE UNQUALIFIED by any menas, but we all know a few who have no business training new recruits. Plus, it would take away one more spot for the bosses to hide their girlfriends!
A few years back I had occasion to be at the academy and actually witnessed recruits doing "step Aerobics". STEP AEROBICS, people!!! Gus Tero ( may he rest in peace ) must be spinning in his grave!

I would say that you worked at the Academy before. This EXACT scenerio was played out there several years ago, (under Schenkel, I beleive). It did not work as the Dept. did not want to pay instructors as FTO's.
Believe it or not, NOT everyone wants to work at the Academy. The hours suck, there is no overtime, no holiday pay, you work EVERY detail in the summer (no time due granted), and recruits slam you on their bi-monthly critiques.
As for legit, pass the test F.T.O.'s - have you seen the test? My 12yr old could pass the test!

I stand by my statement. I see you are still bitching and moaning. I have met Officers like you before who know it all but when it comes down to it you are the last one to show up on a 10-1, first one to run away and first one to cry instead of trying to help. The only reason seniority means anything to you is that it is all you have to show for your career, nothing else. I actually feel sorry for you and I really hope no new people get infected with your bad attitude.
Shencle might have been "the best" but why is a guy who never was a police officer be the head of teaching police work????? He loved to fire ppo's too.
Schenkle didn't "love" to fire PPO's, he just didn't tolerate bullshit.
Remember coming on the job? Mind your p's and q's and stay out of trouble. Some of the PPO's didn't have the sense god gave a baby. They deserved firing.
Problem with some coppers is that some think this is a lifetime appointment. It's not! If you screw up bad enough, you need to be fired. I'm not talking about honest mistakes....mistakes happen and we should help you. But some of the stupid coppers, I.E. our 13th district thief, the 007 dope dealers....does anyone really feel sorry for them?
There are very few of the "real" police who I'd want in charge of the academy. Definitely want them as instructors, but not in charge. The attitudes of some here is a perfect statement of reasoning for me.
Real police really learn how to do real police work in the real world. The academy can hopefully acclimate you to the environment, teach you to improve your shooting ability, teach you defensive driving, and teach you a lot of paper and procedures.
Your experiences on street with good experienced police officers will teach you how to stay out of the bag.
If you have serious deficiencies at the playpen, whether academic, disciplinary, or whatever, than the academy has no business putting you out on the street. We as an organization owe you no such loyalty until your first day on the street. The minute you get here, I'll have your back.
But I want an impartial, tough and unsympathetic (read: ex-marine) evaluating you before you get here. Not somebody's uncle, not somebody's politician, and not somebody's friend. Not somebody who will hide you in our group identity before you have walked a minute in my shoes. Nope. Schenkel or somebody like that is who SHOULD be in charge of training. More than anything, I want somebody who ain't afraid to give people the boot. In this department and city of phone calls and Chinamen, my best guess is that's where he got in trouble.
Bob Rawa and Sgt. Hamilton should run the academy. PERIOD!

But you didn't answer my question: I don't know what is going on in 017, but if that officer was driving a bread truck, would the ASA prosecute him?
Now, tell me how I should get the info on the 017 officer. Should I just call 017 and say "hi, I'm a copper and I want to know who's getting it shoved up his ass, can you help me?"
Regarding making a statement I know nothing about...I've dealt with ASA's for a long time, and yes, they will prosecute you, but not me. Why not me? Because I haven't done anything stupid enough to get prosecuted.
If the 017 officer is getting the shaft, then let's talk about why and maybe everyone can help him out. However, if he did something stupid, (like criminal) then you don't know what to do either, do you? If you do know what all of us can do to help this officer, then don't be silent, give it up.
