More Flak for the Mayor

Once more into the breach of divisive racial politics.

The mayor is taking heat for the lack of minority representation in "policymaking city jobs." Now, we don't know about the rest of you, but we don't really care that much about city policy - it always seems directed at emptying our wallets and filling up some politically connected hack's bank account who would be hard pressed to get a job shoveling shit at the circus.

That being said, we are rather of the mind that the jobs should be filled by the person most qualified to do the job. If that person has three arms, one eye, no teeth and is colored green, they ought to be doing that job. This entire business of "entitlements," "set asides," and other such nonsense only further contributes to the slow decay of our major cities and the destruction of any common ground between people. But of course, promoting qualified people has never been the city's strong suit - or the Department's.

Besides, any minority that has seen how quickly the mayor and his cronies throw minorities under the bus as soon as the heat gets to be too much would be idiots to even work for the City in any circumstance.

I agree with you SCC, the most qualified person should get the job. As far as the racial make up is concerned...SO WHAT. The only ones that are concerened about the racial make up are those wonderful racists like The Hat Tillman, Coleman, and Prekwinkle. Like it or not they are racists. They believe the color of ones skin should dictate over their skill level. That is a racist boys and girls.

I ask all the bloggers to keep this one you have some can talk about race issues without throwing out racial slurs.

Hey, back in 1973, the Courts said that "affirmative action" was merely a "temporary" remedy to a vexatious problem. Now, it's become a damn BIRTHRIGHT!

My regrets that I will be unable to "celebrate diversity" with y'all during February--Black History month.

I think you guys are logically off on the race thing. You would be right if we could point to ANY evidence that Daley is putting the best qualified into spots. But where in the hell is the evidence of that?

He's putting political hacks and yes men into spots. Collectively, they are driving the city into the ground.

I read the statements of Tillman and others as merely, hey, as long as we're just throwing hacks and yes men into spots, where are mine?

Seriously, name one decent appointed city official. One!

As long as they are throwing around patronage at anybody but the best qualified, why shouldn't each group in the pot demand their share?

Blacks/Hispanics NOT to their credit are moaning and groaning about Department head jobs, which only allows a few individuals with employment....while mainly "WHITE" contractors and good ole boys are running off with the goose and all of the golden eggs, and every other years there are all kinds of indictments and finger pointing, then its back to business...This is Chicago it has never ever been about qualification, Never will.

a bit off the post..........BUT it keeps bothering me that 25,000 people applied for a couple hundred jobs at a WalMart...this country keep out sourcing jobs claiming that these are jobs that American will not do....DUD!! 25, 000 people seeking employment at near prevailing hourly rate....something awfully wrong here, Americans should be hiring Americans....I now hear that the CPD will be out sourcing the monitoring of all those street cameras next somewhere in India.....cheaper, plus it ain't no job an American would want to do!!!!!!!

I guess the thread has slipped a little, leaning more toward racism problems and away from entitlement so here goes.

A major city mayor telling the world that he wants a "Chocolate City" without any censure from the mayoral coalition is disgusting and wrong.

Thus a "new" code word has been established and accepted in the media to replace the "N" and that is chocolate. I know it's not new, ie. Mr. Chocolate etc...

But, now it is mainstream and due to non objection it's stapmed valid.

An "entitled mayor" abusing his responsibility to represent all of the citizens of N.O. choses, in stead, to become a myoptic one sided racist. Way to go "Nig-Nog"
(an affectionate chocolate tag)

Does anyone out there truly believe that a qualified White candidate, or Hispanic, or Asian,
or Other than "Chocolate would EVER be appointed by this mayor?

Well, I promised myself I would not be drawn into any race-baiting by the European-American bigots, but I have refrained long enough.

Everyone always says "the most qualified person should get the job." It never works that way, though, does it? What about those "minority" companies that get city contracts. Turns out they are owned by white folks.

And you SCC (or is it M?) in the thread below raise the race question about the $9 Million Dollar Man. What does it matter his race?

No, white folks bring up the race question and cry, "boo, hoo, hoo. I want mine." Hey! I got where I am by myself. No pols to help me, no ward organization, no nothing.

Why don't you make a flyer with these allegations directed towards the businesses on that beat. Put one in the mail box or doorway of every business on beat 1631, informing them that they have NO police coverage on 1st watch. You could do the same for private residents, but they don't carry the impact that the businesses will.

This may help your situation AND GET YOU TO STOP WHINING ABOUT IT HERE, since nothing is going to come of it if you don't get proactive.

Remember the 1985 Sergeants test, made and graded by Bowling Green University. There hadn't been a sergeant's exam since 1979.

It took over 18 months to grade the multiple choice portion of the exam.

There was a short answer portion, about 10-12 easy questions.

There was an oral portion...all the questions were the first four items of the short answer part. Plus, "What do you need to make an HBT log?" (Don't bring up your education or experience.)

Your efficiency grades counted for 3% of your score. If you were white, and graded by a white supervisor, and your grade was 95+, you were dropped to below 70.

All in all, it took 3 1/2 years to come up with TWO lists. the raw score list where whites scored 83% of the top spots at all levels, and the STANDARDIZED list. There whites were knocked down to 66%. There were no names or other identifiers on these lists except sex and race.

Then this had to be approved by Judge Prentiss Marshall.

The FOP lawyers wanted both lists put up, and see who wanted to sue. They would have made a fortune on the litigation. It was motioned by a P.O. in Marshall's court that the city put up both lists, promote off the STANDARDIZED list, but anyone at that same level be paid sergeant's pay, so that no one was penalized for being white. That would have set a heck of a president, so that didn't exactly happen.

So the city went to promote 243 new sergeants after 3 1/2 years of testing and grading and who knows what else. Everyone is called down to the academy. Everyone is very happy. Then everyone is sent home "due to an administrative hang-up". Everyone is now very unhappy.

The next day, everyone is called back to the academy, they added 13 more minorities and women.
