Union Post Revisited

Here's the post we wrote back on 25 Jul 05 about Unions. We were only getting about 20 or 30 visitors a day back then but we thought we made some good points. It was actually during the WalMart controversy right after the whole deal went south. Our position was that the day of the union is in the past and unions do more harm than good.

And as we stated in the Comments section previously, FOP is a fraternal organization, not a true union that can bargain and threaten the city. The only reason we get anything in negotiations is because the city agrees to give it to us OR the arbitrator gives it to us.

The union of the past is dead. That doesn't mean there isn't a need for a union. Without a union you have just your own voice if working conditions r unfair or your not being paid for the amount of hours you've worked.

The once great unionaztion of American workers is what killed the manufactoring industry in this country. The union got fat and lazy thus killing its own employees. What unions need to do in todays society is go over the books of their members employers and work out fair pay for the amount of work their workers do compared to the profits of that company. Unionized workers have to come to a realization that the good old days of doing very little and getting paid well r long gone from the private sector, unless u r in Chicago and connected!!

I think the tipping point that is marginalizing unions is globalization, corporations going multi-national and reaping the slave-like unorganized third world workers all over the globe... but you never know... when those chumps wake up, unite and GET ORGANIZED and UNIONIZE... maybe, just maybe the WORKER will again have the upper hand and THE WORKERS OF THE WORLD WILL UNITE to gain livable wages and progressive work conditions WORLDWIDE from our ©o®po®ate masters!

SOLIDARITY! FREE PASS to UNION BROTHERS AND SISTERS OUT ON THE STREET (even if they're jaggy!)

Many years ago, when I was i colege, I took an Economics class. There was an article that explained why unions and organized labor in general were obsolete. This started in the sixtys.

The reason given was their stubborn reluctance to allow changes in the workplace and to allow for modern technology and their unreasonable economic demands. It cited the demise of the steel industry and other manufacturing sectors. The author also blamed Labor for ithe industrial flight to foreign lands. It predicted that in the future we would be a sales and service economy versus the industrial giant that we were. The article was written in the mid seventies.

The author was right. Organized labor is just as responsible for the demise of industry as anyone.

This is off topic too. The City is giving some mutt nine million bucks for a wrongful conviction.

Now maybe he deserves something, but nine mil?

Where is the money coming from? If they can afford to pay nine million to this guy, how come they cry poor when we want a decent raise or benefits?

Helloooo!

Those values have brought the Wobblies to Queens, where the abundance of cheap immigrant laborers, many of who are undocumented, has bred the conditions for exploitation.

In a way, the role is fitting for the union, remaining consistent with their philosophy to organize labor very close to the point of production. Their goal has always been to mobilize the workers themselves, not to fight for influence among business leaders and politicians, said Jim Crutchfield, a member of New York’s IWW.

The Hispanic men who met Tuesday night are workers at EZ Supply Corp., a small Ridgewood-based company that distributes food supplies and containers. Before they unionized, employees worked 10-12 hours a day, six days a week for a flat fee that amounted to pay of $4 or $5 an hour, well below the current $6.75 minimum wage, workers said.

Jugo Flores, an employee at the company, said the move to form a union at first frightened the workers and their families, who feared retaliation from their boss. But eventually the poor working conditions caused the group to seek help from a Brooklyn advocacy group called Make the Road by Walking. Officials there eventually put them in touch with the IWW.

“It kept building until we couldn’t take it anymore,” Flores said. “When you see things happen to your companions, you can’t just turn your head and pretend you don’t see.”

The root of the term "union" applies, in our police department, in the philosophy of unity.

Do we have a union? No.
Do we have a fraternal organization with by laws and a contract with appointed (voted in)spokespersons who represent us, Yes.

Does that mean we had to give up our freedoms without the right to participate in civil disobedience/ No.

However, civil disobedience without unity and stamina to win for the common cause are destined to fail.

We don't need a union if we were able to stick together and stand firm in a united effort to change for the good of all of the members.
Sickness does occur, discretion does allow leniency in enforcement,
unsafe vehicles should not be driven until they function properly , same goes for radios, computers, and any necessary item that applies to safe policing. No man or woman civilian or sworn should work in an unsafe environment, ie. exposed wires, unsafe and unclean air duct systems, citizens carrying TB, AIDS, lice, (to mention only a few)
allowed to sleep in station hallways.

Yes, minor every day happenstance.
We deserve better. We won't get it because we seem to nuture the "what's in it for me/" attitude.
We do not stick together as long as "I get mine".
We deserve to be herded like sheep. We are sheep.
Look at how we treat one another on this blog. Yeah, me too. We are wrong and we deserve whatever bone King Dick tosses our way.
It's too bad because we have the numbers and talent to actually change things for the better.

MAYOR AUDITS FOP

CROWN POINT — In a letter urging a federal investigation, Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez hints at a widening financial scandal in a local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

But officials at FOP Chris Anton Lodge 125 said politics motivated Dominguez’s request that U.S. Attorney Joseph Van Bokkelen audit the lodge.

John Buncich, a candidate for sheriff against Dominguez, is a senior trustee in the organization.

The letter from Dominguez to Van Bokkelen says an internal lodge audit into financial irregularities while County Police Officer Mitchell King was lodge treasurer indicates other members of the organization may have been involved in stealing or misappropriating at least $70,000.

King has been placed on administrative leave, and could be fired by the Lake County Police Merit Board at its February meeting.

King’s alleged multiyear thievery “could involve ... the malfeasance of certain FOP officers who had responsibility for overseeing the FOP’s investments, accounts, expenditures and the checks written by King during his term as secretary/treasurer,” reads the Jan. 24 letter.

In the copy of the correspondence, acquired by the Post-Tribune through a Freedom of Information Act request submitted to the Sheriff’s Department, names other than King’s have been blacked out.

But Chris Anton lodge attorney Michael Deppe said it is clear whom Dominguez has targeted with the request.

“This is a political attack on Buncich,” Deppe said.

Dominguez writes he is prevailing upon the U.S. Attorney’s Office to launch an independent investigation because the Indiana State Police has declined.

But Deppe said State Police officials have not yet announced whether they will head up the inquiry into the missing funds.

“I haven’t sent the State Police a letter yet asking them to take the case,” Deppe said.

Van Bokkelen was not available Wednesday to comment about the situation.

King, a Hobart resident, resigned as secretary-treasurer of the lodge in September, amid allegations he took money from the organization’s coffers.

Dominguez said the possibility that tax laws or banking statutes have been broken makes a federal investigation appropriate.

Lodge officials first called for an independent investigation last week. Buncich said he welcomes the inquiry, be it from State Police or federal officials.

“One way or the other, there seems to be money missing and we need to get this taken care of,” he said.

The latest flap involving a Lake County police officer and missing funds comes about two months after Sgt. Robert Porras was arrested on counts of fraud and theft.

Porras is accused of stealing money from a Lowell-area youth football team for which he served as treasurer.

The Indiana State Police conducted the investigation that led to Porras’ arrest.

The starting salary is $42,000. Your at about $67,000 with 5 years on. Your at about $70,000 with 10 years. This is not including about duty availability (add about $2000). The money isn't bad. Some deserve more, some deserve less. For detectives add about $4000. For Sgt add $20,000 (they get an additional 3,000 for duty avail and 1/2 hour of time on the books each day and they can sell 200 hours back to the city each year). I love to hear my fellow supervisors complain about how hard they have it. Most of these guys should be working at McDonalds. Your Lts and Capt are makeing six figures, easily.

The reason given was their stubborn reluctance to allow changes in the workplace and to allow for modern technology

** Modern tech takes jobs away from workers. Good for the Inc., but bad for Joe 6pack. Will you be happy if Richie IV fires you for a robot police officer? Will you say, "Oh well, as long as Richie likes it and the citz don't have to pay so much." No, you will not.

**Here is the rub: Will cutting wages like GM, Ford, et al are doing has no effect on YOUR bottom line? Will a Corvette be $25,000 now? No. The benifit will not be passed on to the consumers, yet the top execs rake in big $$$ bonuses and salaries.

**GM and Ford made bad business moves (sticking to gas guzzling SUV) while their competitors shifted gears to smaller cars and hybrids. GM and Ford's MGT failed the Co. Yet, let's blame those damn unions and their fucking living wages!!

and their unreasonable economic demands.

**You people seem to for get that is nation is based on a CONSUMER economy. If people do not consume, then NOTHING get's sold. If you fire everyone and re-hire them at $1 an hour, they will not be able to purchase anything. Is this what you want? Or should the Middle Class and poor not be allowed to possess anything? We should just be happy we breathe the rich people's air! Wait until that is too much....

Who are you people on this blog?? Cops???? Am I missing something? My W-2 last year was $63,000. Am I making only half of what the rest are you making? I like my free time, I don't have a 2nd job, are all you bloggers rich? Can you hire me at your 2nd job to??

Hey 8:06!!! Are you smoking crack again???? $20,000 between PO and Sgt, Huh? It is about $10,000 base salary...... 1/27/2006 09:04:19 PM

No, he's not smoking crack, he just knows how to read!!

The disparity between D-1 and D-3 is about $11,000 +. Then take into consideration the quarterly allowance (paid at the same time duty availability is paid...this does not go to PO's) which is approx another $2800 for sgts, then the fact sgts get half an hour a day comp time (going up to ¾ an hour once the contract is ratified) and the fact supervisors can sell back 200 hours a year.......it's easily well over $20,000!

With holidays and the ¾ hour a day, it's easy to bank well over 200 hours a year and sell them back.

If that's not good enough reason to go for sgt, I don't know what is.

1/27/2006 11:13:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

With out new contract, we (sgts.) are easily separated by $20,000. Fcator in the duty availabity, quarterly, uniform and the 200 sellback and we're grossing over $100,000........ we are doing alright.

How does someone work in 018, 024, IAD, & 020 without ever doing a day in the ghetto? Are there a lot of cops like that on the north side (no offense)?

I'm having a hard time believeing this.He keeps you till 25 after, which by itself is stupid but not the worst thing I've ever heard of. Give us more examples. Does he try to bury coppers with CR numbers, does he hammer them on,say, court deviations, etc., etc.
Does he follow them around to their jobs, does he limit the lunch break to exactly 30 minutes? What does he do that causes all the hate? Elaborate, please.

Hey sgt. saunders ask any boss on 3rd watch or 1st watch in 20 they will tell you dont just take our word for it. And by the way this job is the greatest job in the world I think.
So when I tell you 25 min after the hour It is the truth.

Ok, I believe you but I just am having a hard time understanding why. Doesn't this guy believe in the idea of keeping his troops happy? Doesn't he realize that a happy employee is a good and productive employee? Doesn't he realize that being a Sgt.is much much more than being a disciplinarian, that he should be a mentor, a teacher, a leader, someone that the troops can look up to, someone that they would want to follow? I once read somewhere that the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Marv Levy, was asked how he got his players to excel, to perform above the level that most would expect them to or that they were really capable of. His reply was something like this. He never asked his players to follow him. He did however ask them to "join" him in the quest for a Super Bowl ring. I try to live by that train of thought everyday. Maybe this Sgt. Dickman should consider doing the same.

I feel for you guys in 020. He's making a certain 3rd watch Sgt in 011 look good. My friends who work in 011 say their new 3rd watch Lt. is a real tool. Moral is swirling the toilet bowl there.

With out new contract, we (sgts.) are easily separated by $20,000. Fcator in the duty availabity, quarterly, uniform and the 200 sellback and we're grossing over $100,000........ we are doing alright.

Your Kidding Right? Check your math. While you are well compensated your not making 100k a year. More like 91K to 95K and thats with 20 years on the job, selling all 200 hrs each year. Which just as a thought, you should probably hang on to as your devaluing its worth by selling early. Save your time and sell it after 30 years. It will be worth more.

Gotta sell that time now when the note is due on the Escalade and the 300C.

Any time you’re out from under.
Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.

Union, fraternal organization, doesn't matter. We are prevented by state law from taking any job action which disrupts operations, strike etc.
FOP has us in the best position yet, we are winning several major lawsuits, we did well in last arbitration and the City looks disorganized with many resources defending against corruption charges.
Anyone remember 25 years ago? We are better off now, want a steelworker or auto worker union job? Have at it but it is in China or similar.
Nothing is perfect but still much better than when I came on. 72k a year with two years of college and a virtually guaranteed job, jeez. Keep plugging away.
