Flashback - Profiling

Long time readers of the blog will remember back in July, during the height of the reverend Meeks incident, we wrote a large number of threads about the entire incident taking everyone and their brother to task (go to our July archives, start around the 15th and scroll upwards). We also saw that the mayor is home from his little Middle East jaunt and we hope he brought us some new and wondrous policing ideas as he has on so many of his other forays (the better to call it "business" and get the taxpayers to pay for it). You will recall that the camera idea was picked up on trips to Europe, was it not?

Here's a little policing tip we hope the mayor introduces in the coming weeks or months. We referenced it way back on 02 August 05 in a post we titled "A dirty little secret." It is perhaps the DIRTIEST little secret in all of policing:

Profiling Works

Let's pause for a moment to let the screams from our more liberal minded readers die down for a bit. Are they done yet? We still hear some dogs barking. There we go. Take a breath people. Here's some more sacrilege - Profiling has ALWAYS worked. In it's simplest form, it's a matter of seeing something that doesn't fit the surroundings. And reality being what it is, race sometimes comes into it. Chicago is still among the most segregated cities in the nation. Therefore, it stands to reason that a white guy in a black neighborhood MIGHT be there to buy drugs. A black guy in a hispanic part of town MIGHT be there to do garage burglaries. A hispanic guy in a white neighborhood MIGHT be there to do a drive by. Your good coppers - your truly great street guys - can go beyond the initial visual anomaly and make some truly spectacular arrests.
  • Run the plate - is it from the neighborhood? Is it hot? Is it on the right type of car?
  • Visual clues - is the subject a "fit" for the area? Financially? Is he/she wearing expensive clothes in a rundown part of town? Are they carrying a pillowcase in an alley?
  • Physical appearances - Hypes? Health nuts? Holding their side? Eyeballing everyone else? Eyeballing nothing at all?
The list goes on and on, but what cops should be looking for is the "totality of the circumstances" which as we all should know, is a polite way of saying "profiling." NOT RACIAL PROFILING. Criminal profiling. Even some civilians can do it - but WE are supposed to do it. Being able to put 2 and 2 together has led to a lot of crimes being solved or prevented. Being able to put it down on paper and selling it to a State's Attorney or a jury is what makes it great.

Which is why this recent push to combat nonexistent racial profiling isn't just a waste of time and money. It's plain dumb.

This whole racial profiling is nonsense how come when we do it it's a problem but when the FBI does it it's not. They actually call it profiling. Hell dozens of other agencies do it across the country like the numerous state police agencies that look for the mexicans muling up coke from mexico. I mean lets be real it has to be done to be a good cop, it's what makes us sharp.

Speaking of alleged "racial profiling", check out the latest police procedural tome entitled "OUT OF CABRINI" by Dave Case, a CPD sergeant.

Just made one of my frequent visits to Barnes & Noble and picked up a copy. The protagonist is 18th District Tac Officer Stacey Macbeth.

As the title indicates, his fictional turf is set in the violence of the Cabrini-Green of yesteryear---prior to gentrification and Starbucks.

Ah, bittersweet memories of those bloody nineteen-story fortified arsenals at "1150/60", "1117/19" and "500/502". Gone but not forgotten.

I've worked in the southside ghetto for several years and I don't give a fuck who it is I pull over. If he's black, he's getting taken down. If anybody has a problem with that theres nothing they can do. I'll drive my squad car head-on into a telephone pole when I'm 99 and guess what? No more work, paid to sit at home the rest of my life. Funny things about backs, doctors can never tell what's really wrong with them. Be safe folks, pull over as many oppressed minorities as you can. Hell, pull over some fucking eskimo's if you can get the chance.

New CBS Poll: Dim View of Bush and the GOP

CBS:

Only 31% of those polled approve of Mr. Bush's job performance; 68% believe the United States is worse off today than it was before Bush became president. Congressional Republicans get an eviscerating review in this poll. The GOP gets a favorability rating of 37%, exactly 20 percentage points lower than where it was in 1994. Inversely, Democrats in Congress had a favorability rating increase of 11 percentage points over what it was in 1994...read on"

I can understand going off topic but at what point did you think to yourself, "Gee, I bet people are reading this thread just waiting to hear about this"? Something you have to realize. For every study proving an undeniable truth, there is another study proving the exact opposite. Stop plugging in to the media unless it is for pure entertainment.

Did someone say profiling?

How strange it is that Daley just returned from Israel. Did he fly El Al by chance?

Why, you say, do I ask? Well, El Al is the safest airline in the world, and the leading profiler for any transportation company. Their security personnel serve as advisors for DHS and numerous U.S. law enforcement agencies.

And most any major jurisdiction in the U.S. has sent someone to learn from the Israelis.

What are they learning? How to profile. How to profile a hijacker or suicide bomber.

Do Democrats REALLY have a problem with this, or is profiling okay only when its important like with airlines and suicide bombers. Having 500+ homicides per year ain't good enough reason?

FWIW, that's more deaths per year than Israel has suffered at the hands of terrorists in any year. At least, I think it is.

So profiling our gangbanging/drugdealing/drugbuying/homicidal criminals: Bad. They only kill 500 out of 3 million per year.

But profiling hijackers/suicide bombers/terrorists: Good. Even if they kill less than 500 out of Israel's 6 million per year.

Can we find somebody to run against these idiots?

I am not a police officer but a well respected member of the African-American community. I find that just because I am affluent, white police officers pull my vehicle over assuming I am engaged in narcotics activity. My fellow African-American brothers do not pull me over. Why only the white police? Because they are racist.

Besides the profiling, I thank you all for the fine job you are doing keeping my neighborhood safe.

And yes I am white but no I am not racist I am just a realist.

I can think of one that occasionally used to pop up in 011, though certainly not common.

Hit and run offender: white junkie knowing exactly where he's at and what is likely to happen if he doesn't run. Technically, an offender and a hair away from being a homicide victim at the same time.

Didn't Commander Perry just get found guilty of racial profiling her own officers? If the Sup. is serious about racial profiling, why not start with her, and make an example?

Fact, in a city that is about 33% black, about 60% of the criems are commited by blacks. White people are not doing drive bys in Englewood (or anywhere elese in the city). White people are not doing car jackings in Gresham. Very few white people at least in Chicago are out on street corners selling crack to their own children and poioning their neighborhood.

I love the added page in the rules of the road booklet. The people that we are trying to pull over, those that are black...half of them do not have licenses or have ever gotten one. It is unlikely that they will ever read that page regarding what to do when you get pulled over by a police officer.

...If they're called minorities why the fuck are they all I see when I look around?

P.S. Support and encourage "gun buyback" programs for inner cities...when SHTF there will be that many fewer guns shooting back at us and raiding our neighborhoods. I used to oppose any of Daley's anti-gun programs but when you realize he's just disarming the minority-majority of Chicago, it will help when the eventual race riot begins.

Our police memorial strives to work to bring police and the community together. Naturally, we also know that there are limits on this. When the petition rolled out, there was a tremendous amount of civilians that not only supported you, asked what they could do to assist further, and even some who followed up after Haithcock dropped the sign issue (for now).

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what profiling is. We're not splicing DNA here.

I'm not changing who I am to please you or anyone else, but to get the job done. Have a great day.

She's a troll and no one should trust her. She's a beefer and has gotten CR#'s on PO's who confronted her. If she really contacted anyone in the Gilhooley family she should be whipped. Since she apparently doesn't work -is she living on donations made to her website but intended for the real Police Memorial????? She's simply your standard con-artist and probably thief. You're quite far from the truth.

We never accept any financial donations for our memorial. WE did receive a police memorial art print "We Never Walk Alone" from the creator when we first established our site in 1999. Do you know anything about that print and what it represents?
I personally pay to keep our forum running on a quarterly basis.

If you check, there are no "CR's" on any police officer that has confronted me. Because no police officer HAS confronted me. (?)

You must be totally clueless about any police memorial since you don't know much about the NLEOMF let alone what we do. And yes, we are a national police memorial.

One of our Assistant's from the UK stood with the CPD in DC last year (SCC has the pics). So if you are even CPD, you weren't there!!

Believe it or not, I am employed full time!

Anyone that does know me, knows that if I was in charge of anything charitable, I would never touch the funds. That's not cool...
