Covering the Pension - Again

One of our readers is taking us to task in the previous comment section, linking to Sunday's Sun Times article by Fran Spielman about municipal pensions. Evidently, this must be a new reader as we've had at least one open thread on the pension and on 10 May 2006 we linked to this article in Crain's Chicago Business regarding the coming pension shortfall. So not only were we ahead of the new reader, we were almost a month ahead of the mainstream media.

According to the article, the pension system will be bankrupt within two decades or so, just as the bulk of this department about to max out their pensions. The reasons for this are multitude including the City and State deferring mandatory contributions in order to fund election year pork and construction projects. This is not just an Illinois problem as can been seen on the national level with Social Security and such - all of these projects have IOU's from the city/state/nation for the past 80 years or so and the bills are coming due as new workers can't possibly pick up the slack to support a burgeoning retirement age population.

Here's your chance to vent on it. See if we can come to some consensus. We know some FOP Board members are aware of this site and read it. How about some ideas for them?

BULLSHIT ! ! !

What is the average lifespan of an officer after they retire? 13 paychecks?

All that money GOES BACK IN to the pension fund. Widows pension? It ain't shit.. my mother-in-laws deceased husband was a Sergeant when he died and all she gets a month is about $1000 bucks.

In short-- something is seriously FU%KED UP !

Bullshit! The FOP told King Dick that it was no problem for the city not to repay what it owed to the pension fund!

What is the main cause of the deficit? Is it the City's fault for not keeping up with their contributions, is it poor investments on the part of the pension board, is it the fact that alot of people aren't sticking around long enough,ie they are retiring as soon as they hit 50yoa and 20 on? What can be done to solve this problem? Do we need to raise the minimum retirement age to say 55 or even 60?

Little Donahue Peep has lost the police pension and still can sleep,
And can't tell where to find it.
Do us a favor and get off your ass,
And do something for someone else,
other then the brass.

Lot's of whining and complaining, very little getting out there and doing it yourselves, same people always show up at FOP meetings. The complaining jagoffs never go, they just sit and type out anonymous complaints. SHUT UP AND GET INVOLVED. Easy to complain, much harder to actually work for change. Don't think your union dues buys you enything? Then try and make it better, run for unit rep and see what it's like.

I pay dues for you to fight for me. I pay dues to support your excessive salaries. Earn your money, do your job!

I don't have to go to union meetings, I elect you to represent me.

Kind of like other political positions.

Just represent us.

How about the FOP or someone organize a rally at a city hall council meeting regarding the pension fund. If the mexicans can produce large numbers as they did for their cause the police and fire should be able to do the same. Our retirement benefits are at risk and only by a force of large numbers showing up at a rally will our voice be heard. Eliminate Daley's strategy of DIVIDE AND CONQUER and we might be able to achieve something.

JUST 'AXING' [ebonics]
Why is it that other sites regarding social topics and BS get 100's of posts and something like the PENSION topic is hardly commented upon. This topic affects ALL of us one way or another. [Sorry state of affairs]
Now instead of busting balls on TRU, SOS, SWAT, Northside, this district or that copper...WE collectively need to join forces on THIS isssue.
Remember that "Thin Blue Line."
It's MORE that a slogan...it's a BUNCH of issues!
It's US........... TOGETHER!!!!!

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Actually, the city enacted a new ordinance that states that when the license comes up for renewal, if the business has any open space that the open space must be fenced with wrought iron.
You will be seeing so much wrought iron in the city it will make you sick. Sick to think of who is getting the kick back for this massive project.
Fitzgerald, are you listening, take a look at this one, please.

Here is a novel idea........do NOT give Daley the grace period to fulfill his pension contribution. we have to put into it on the 1st and the 16th, SO SHOULD THE CITY. Quit sleeping with the enemy!!!!!
The dues paid salary of Donahue is gone, so we will not get that back. But for Christ sakes, stand up for the members who put you in office there and grow a set of nuts!!!!!!!

Not a bad idea we picketed years ago. But look around divide and conquer is already here. Might be too late. Besides meritorious promotions, exempts and bosses not in FOP and too many good spots where the PO is controlled by management, look at the way we treat each other on this blog. Divide and conquer is already here and we will pay a hefty price for letting it get this way.

FOP could care less about OUR pension. Remember they forgave over twenty million in debt and we got nothing- no 80%.

The pension has been in crisis since I've been on the job, almost thirty years, and the old timers when I was a recruit felt the same way.

Government has learned a leson from private industry and is creating a crisis. The goal- eliminate the pension system. The method- make it appear that Mr. Taxpayer will have to foot the bill, piss Mr. Taxpayer off and voila, no pension system.

The way to save OUR pension- have a federal law passed that prohibits any borrowing from pension funds.
