Downtown Shooting - Analysis
Just a few observations on the entire situation based on conversations with involved parties, reading the comments, scanning the media articles and our conclusions:
- For all the beatings SWAT has taken on this site over the past few weeks, they performed outstandingly in this situation.
- The District and Area people, first on the scene, were more than outstanding. They were a credit to the entire Department.
We also read about how the building security and management were giving out conflicting information to building occupants as to "Stay in place" or "Get the hell out!" And then there was the automated PA system that was drowning out instructions the police were attempting to give and leading to more than a little frustration. This more than anything worries us about any type of attack that might occur downtown. Or in any of the large office buildings, complexes or campuses that dot the city.
No one practices evacuation once they're out of grade school. There are some companies that do it once in a great while. But in reality? We've become complacent. Again. What if this was a couple of well armed nutcases? With a car bomb nearby? Or a team of terrorists hitting two buildings or three? Are we paranoid? Or maybe a little hyper sensitive? We should all be thinking this way a little bit - but we don't see the city doing it.

I worked for a large co before becoming the police. I was on the 54th floor of the Bank One bldg, now the Chase bldg. I was there for 2 years. 1998-2000. We did an exac down the stairs once.
The first TWO 001st Dist. officers that responded were the REAL HEROES..they isolated the lunatic and made him stay in the office reception area and not go after the remaining office workers......many officers were on the floor immediately and backed up these officers and also contributed to the heroics...all heores......when SWAT finally arrived, they absolutely acted professional and are a CREDIT to the CPD.....everyone on the floor that day receives credit (PO's before SWAT and after they arrived because anything could have happened) The tragedy is that a CPD officer's father died......but every officer that arrived plus the SWAT TEAM were excellent when the emergency arose...I wish the media could really report on the heroics of that incident instead of all the B.S. being reported from S.O.S.!!! All CPD officers should be proud of the actions of every officer at that scene!!!!!
Did anyone hear how the family member of this animal stated he was a victim. It was on the radio (WBBM-AM). It also stated how he was a minority AND a victim!!! When is enough going to be enough??
Three good (innocent) men died. It doesn't matter what race they were. However, they died for no reason because of this piece of garbage!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This city is doomed! This was just one moron by himself with a pea shooter!! Just wait till several heavily armed terrorists take over multiple buildings in different locations throughout the city. I can think of dozens of targets (I won't give any ideas but trust me these bastards know em all) which are unprotected. When all the swat personell respond to the first incident (which takes 45 minutes if you look at the response time for this last one) the second target location will be taken... then the third... and so on and so on. Instead of spending money on more police personnel, more firepower and more training our wonderful Mayor spends millions on a giant silver bean, flower pots, setteling frivilous law suits, ect. ect. There should be swat personnel assigned to every district and assault rifles in every squad car with personnel trained in useing them. Lot of good all these cameras did the other day huh? When that sad day comes that our city encounters true terror you can thank King Richard M. Daley for the aftermath.
I just hope that they, (the brass, the States Attorneys), treated the officer(s) who fired the shots like heros, not criminals.
Since the shooter was on the 38th floor, I have to wonder what the point was in shutting down the Metra trains. Did someone think a bullet was going to go thru 38 floors? Are our buildings really that flimsy? All that did was create an angry and hostile crowd, i.e., unnecessarily dangerous situation, and too many people crowding the area. Also, why shut the elevators down below the shooter's floor? Can't we do anything right?
I'm giving 50 to 1 odds Mary Mitchell will have a column on how the poor black man was wronged by the patent lawyers. Will come within the next week. Mark my words. She will justify it under the oft used "black rage" defense.

You are headed straight to the top. Expect your gold oak leaf during the next boss moves. Goof.
another shocker. building security giving conflicting info. they can't be counted on. same with that fire downtown where they told people to evacuate. those people probably wouldnt have been in the stairwell if the building personnel knew what the hell to do.
So who will collect the multi millions mayor jagoff daley will give for the skunk that got sniped.
You know it was a good response and shootimg by the Police when the media stops reporting on it after a day or so. If the media could find anything wrong the would drag this story on for days trying to Fu*k some poor officer. Good job to all Officers involved.
Hey the bad guy snapped and went nuts. the reason doesnt matter the fact is it happened and three people died because of it. Lets remind the family of the offender that they should have been there for him to support him rather then allow him to go on a shooting rampage that ended with three innocent people dead and another injured. Shame on them for not noticing this man was a ticking time bomb. Now these people are looking for a way to go after someone in court for their LOSS. Shame on them

I hope you are not the police!
Nice work to all those on scene in containing this and keeping control. Unfortunately this incident has shown what the glaring vulnerabilities are within the downtown highrises, and with our departments firepower. I hope this could be a wakeup call as to how underpowered we are in the beat car and district. Hopefully it can be rectified before learning the hard way, as L.A. did after their bank heist/shootout a ways back.

Hey pea brain for once use you knukkle head!!! I don't work for swat or any other special unit but if you did pass through the academy or use your common sense then you wouldn't have ask this question. My own common sense or logis thinking say they do have to shut down everything there is to:
1) make sure of the safety of other people in the building
2) that the bad guy doesn't get away.
3) that the bad guy's other accomplice if there is doesn't get away or come in to save his ass.
4) control the situation.
5) try to round up other witnesses in the incident.
6) no innocent bystander gets in the way and get hurt especially those who put their nose where they're not suppose to.
7) media doesn't mess this up as they always do.
I don't know if I did miss anything here but for you I bet when you get into that same situation I would be afraid to be anywhere near you.
Good job to all who responded to this incident everybody was a real professional!!!! Proud to be a CPD!!!! Oh by the way pea brain I think you ate too many donuts already. Guys like you make me sick.
Although SWA did a great job I must add the word dynamic to to take over for breach in the word that every SWAT officers must insert in a sentence while talking.
I have heard this word used more often than any other whil watching various shows and news reports about SWAT situations.
It was necessary and prudent to shut everything down because no one knew if the shooter was acting alone or in concert with others.
Simple!
WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW IS A MCKENNA IS ON RECORD FOR A PATENT, WHIC IS THE EXACT DESIGN OF THE OFFENDER. IS JUST A FLUKE OR WHAT.
Not ALL of the 001 District cops were heroes. One proved that he has no business being the police, and his too little too late play at being a hero was shameful. You know who you are, and so does everyone else who was there. Go find a desk to hide behind for the rest of your career, or find some other job.
Speaking of guns
Weapons turn in 16 Dec 06 1000-1600 various locations:
$100 for assault weapons
$50 for guns
$10 for BB/air guns
$10 for replica guns
I have not seen beat 811 in ages. Too busy serving the mutts in the 20 and 30 sector. The bosses (The alleged Supt.)that live there are too busy catering to the mutts & their nonsense calling the police for nothing elsewhere.
Retirement and out of this city is parole.

you can tell you arent the police and if you are you are a two year boy.. its to slow the offender down from jumping on train and to slow him down were he would have to take the staires.. its precaution..
OKKKKKKKK - As I mentioned before, the whole purpose of the "CCG" (Central Control Group) was to come up with a strategy based on Building Structure & analysis, and some type of evacuation protocol in the event of a terrorist attack/"Downtown Catastrophie". Wondered what ever happened/or is happening with this unit and its "Gifted/Chosen one" and his staff who are all on those special police scholorships.
Hey 12:27, how the fuck do you know it's the "exact design". Because the media told you? The McKenna on the patent for the toilet design alleged to be similiar to the dead shit heads, is an attorney from New York. Now go back to sleep idiot.
the mckenna that was killed is the father of P.O. matt mckenna from the 024th district.
Any copper who has not come across nuts like this Joe Jackson probably works at 35th street. There are plenty of them out there.
I personally have come across at least two police officers, still working, who have nuttso extremist views similar to Joe Jackson's. One M/1/PO believes he does not have to pay taxes, the guvment has hit teams out there killing minorities to make it look like they are violent and that the Illinois Lottery changes the Pick 3 and Pick 4 winners right before drawing time if too many people bet a particular number. He has stated these views loudly and publicly and over time, I believe that he really believes this nonsense.
The other PO in 001 believes all caucasion people are racist and are out to destroy black men and this PO acts accordingly. He's probably not the only PO who has these views, he is the only one I have had a recent very unpleasant encounter with however. The white world has done him wrong kind of thing, in the extreme.
Yes Joe Jackson was an extreme case, probably simmering for years, but there are more like him, some with a badge and gun.
Get your facts straight you idiot, you just repeat bullshit you read in the paper which is incorrect at least 50% of the time.
The below is WRONG. the McKenna is from another state and there was NO toilet for a truck patented by Chicago lawyer McKenna. Just a nutty black man with a gun, 'dat's all wut it was, you know? De dead white man dint cheat him.
On another matter, I was working Cabrini recently and heard many calls of "kill whitey" and "kill the police" and "snipe the police" from the open windows and galleries above. Good thing I wasn't a patent attorney or they might have opened up on me for stealing their last crackpot shithouse designed on a greasy chicken wrapper.

HEY YOUR RIGHT ABOUT TRAINING AND PROPER EQUIPMENT FOR THE FIRST RESPONDING POLICE OFFICERS. I WAS IN SCOTTSDALE ARIZONA RECENTLY AND TALED TO A PATROL OFFICER. HE SHOWED ME HIS SQUAD CAR AND INSIDE IT WAS AN AR15 WITH ENOUGH AMMO TO DEFEND THE ALAMO. HE ALSO STATED THAT ALL PATROL OFFICERS ARE SWAT CERTIFIED AND THAT THEY HAVE A SWAT TEAM ON ALL 24/7 A
I agree. All coppers on scene did a great job.

well this is Chicago and to get to SWAT you need to be the best. Not just some mope who made it through the Academy. Can you see us training some of the fuck sticks on this job! ok thats what I thought. Lets give some F1 or 2 a machine gun on 1611's beat. No bad idea. I would like to live. Lets let SWAT HANDLE THE BIG BOY JOBS.
