You probably already have this info but just in case....
One of the victims at the downtown law firm hostage incident is the father of a 24th dist. copper. He has been informed by dept. reps/chaplain.

according to Channel 7 news......

I guess this answers the question when was the last time a police snipper killed someone. 8DEC06

Which Im sure was actually a SWAT team member who was able to take a shot.

Anyway at least the coppers are all going home safe. Thats all that matters

Phil, if you read this Blog you should know that your SWAT officers looked like the real thing this afternoon. We joke about them lookin good and havin swagger or what not, but I was there and saw them hustle and actually make decisions on the spot unlike your dumb shadow did on turkey day. We in patrol should be carrying the heavy guns, but if that's not to be, then keep these guys equipped. They were Johnny on the Spot !

to 08:57:46 You are obviously a complete uninformed idiot!!! But I is here to skool yu in when and whens not to shoot. when there is a solid( not the solid that is doing someone a favor) it is hard to get a clear shot, but when you be just down the hall with nothin in ur way but the bad guy it is much easier to kill the fucker. 3 of the victims that were killed were white the one that got away with a bullet to the foot was a female black. the rumor was she switched places with whitey so the police would show up.

I don't know if anyone else was watching the coverage of the shooting by ABC7. What a whining crybaby Paul Minekie (SP?) appeared to be. When the Sup gave a very brief press conference about an hour and a half into the incident he had very few details. The way Paul was whining afterword because he did not get enough information was just pathetic. He tried to imply that the Police were hiding something. He also was saying out loud "Phil, Phil!" when the sup finished. I don't care what you think of Phil Cline the fact that a reported was addressing him that way instead of calling him Superintendent or even Mr. Cline was very disrespectful. Hey Paul, here is a news flash for you. The Police have to protect the public, themselves and preserve the crime scene. They do not have to talk to you. They way the press treats the Police you should be lucky we acknowledge you at all. The Police are a necessity in this society, you are not. However that being said when I retire Maybe I should become a reporter. It looks nice. No personal responsibility. You can Lie and speculate all you want. No pressure. No liability.

Sorry I ran so long SCC. I'll be good for the rest of the night. (I hope)

I'm very sorry to here that the victim is the father of a PO in 024. The firm was a patent firm, and I imagine that the victims were likely senior patent attorneys. Its the most (perhaps only) honorable and civilized part of the profession.

What really happen was that a 001 district beat cop exchanged gunfire w/ the shooter. Then he was able to coral the shooter into a spot that enabled the 'SWAT'team to take care of business. Not that I'am bashing the SWAT team, but lets hear it for the regular beat cop that got there first.

Normally I ignore race baiting comments, ignorant liberal propaganda and anything that comes out of city hall, but I took exception to this one. I started to type a reply, but it made me look worse then this prolapsed rectum.

3 men were killed, including a P/O's father, and another one of the victims was nearly 80 years old.

Someone takes a hostage and holes up, there is a great chance you can talk him out. Guy takes a hostage and attempts to hole up, after commiting a multiple, no way he's gonna chat with anyone.

Apples and oranges. Nothing to do with race. And if you did this to get a rise out of us, when you go to hell, please send me a post card.

My thoughts and prayers to the families who lost their loved ones.

tru is great / sos is great / saturation is great / thank goodness we have all of those guys and gals on the street. they do make a difference.

there goes the homicide rate - up again.

yup, you hit the nail on the head. the dept will smooooze da public yet again with the bike patrol or seat belt mission in front of where it went down. phil will make a bs speech about dis and dat and the news people will eat it up and the public will buy into it.

be safe out there. where your longies - itz cold out there.

Apparently you know nothing about
Jimmy Keating, so I'll help you out:

#1) Jimmy is one of the best coppers that this department has ever seen. I know, I was working tact in 010 when he was.

#2) He WAS NOT a merit Sgt.

#3) Ok, so he knows the mayor, SO WHAT!

Gee, is it not a good thing, when the boss is someone who knows what it is to WORK the street?
Reading this blog, would make one think that nothing can make the members of this department happy.
Come on, we have a great job, lets start to appreciate it and worry less about the nonsense!

At least if "theHat" played a reporter for a while, no one would die. What's the worst that could happen? I'd laugh my ass off trying to see a reporter play a cop. There'd be dead bodies all over the place and one of them would be the reporter.

I agree. DC Keating is a very good police and a good boss. As the Cmdr of TRU he hit the street and would put the stop to people. I found myself backing him up many times. And when he got sent to 001, he was still rolling thru the Ickies, something that many POs in 001 won't do! We are all lucky to have him here.

Now maybe it just me, but when Cline said SWAT saved the lives of all of the additional people who was on the floor how could that be if the offender was armed with a snub nosed revolver which contained 5 maybe 6 rounds and he used at least three rounds. There was no mention of the offender being armed with additional rounds.

They are not our friends, as we all know. Just a little more proof.

You have to admit that was one of the most ridiculous press conferences ever. Fisrt Cline utters about 10 words, hands it over to the Fire guy who utters a few words who then hands it off to the guy from OEMC (who shouldn't even be there)who utters a few words and then they all leave.! WTF? None of them said a damn thing. While we don't owe the newsmedia one word, if your going to go in front of the cameras with a statement, then make a statement. These three guys reminded me of Moe, Curley and Larry. Oh well, at least Cline didn't have his bears hat on.

12/09/2006 09:47:04 AM

You are correct, there was no mention of additional rounds. However, he did have extra loose ammunition on him.

CLTV showed the entire second news conference, which was much longer than the first one. After Cline mentioned that the SOS SWAT saved a numnber of lives, he then later added/clarified that SWAT and the 1st District officers saved a number of lives. As tragic as this incident was (especially with one of the victims being the father of one of our own), I was very proud to be a member of this Department. Everyone worked very well together to get this job done - that would be the 1st District Officers, the 12th District Officers, the CCG Bike Unit Officers, the SOS SWAT guys, and a number of others that just responded to do what they could to help. I must even admit that CFD was great with us. Again, a tragedy, but we should all be proud of how our Department resolved this incident.

Stay safe, God Bless, and thank God that all of us went home safe to our families when it was done. I/F forever.

Anyone else listening in on citywide 6 when this all went down? Why did a P.O. frantically shout into the radio, "Offender shot himself, offender just shot himself" if SWAT took him out? Dispatch asked the copper to confirm that offender just shot himself and copper verified. Something aint right.

It doesn't matter what type of copper Keting is, or how great a guy he might be for that matter. His getting triple bumped like that is a slap in the face to any lieutenant or captain on this job trying to make good for themselves.

Please..... especially the captain part... the most illegitimate rank in all of PD, followed by the 30% gimme lt's along with an unknown percentage of lt's with special study groups

The copper who screamed into the radio that the offender shot himself did not witness it nor was he one of the first officers to get to the offender. Bad guy took one .223 round through the left neck that exited through the upper rear of his head and one .223 round center mass. I put the radio traffic down to the "I have to talk on the radio syndrome". Like the 15th car that comes on the air saying it's going to a 10-1. Just leave the air clear for the P.O. calling the emergency. Radio protocol would be a good topic for SCC. My name is not Hondo and I'm not a SWAT guy.

The TWO initial 001st District officers that responded were the REAL heroes....they were able to stop the shooter from continuing his rampage...they did exchange shots 20min. before SWAT arrived...SWAT were very professional and impressive too....many officers were immediately on the floor which saved the other office employees from harm.......except for the loss the PO's father, the CPD should be very proud!!!!

AS A SWAT MEMBER WHAT WE WOULD ASK OF PATROL UNITS WOULD BE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY THE MOMENT WE RESPOND TO THE SCENE. WE CANNOT BE BOTHERED WITH YOUR QUESTIONS OR YOUR STAR STRUCK STARES. MOST OF THE TIME YOU ARE JUST IN THE WAY. AND NOT BEING TRAINED IN SWAT, MOST PATROL OFFICERS WILL ONLY MAKE A BAD SITUATION WORSE. SWAT IS A WAY OF LIFE.
