Something Fishy Going On?

OK, we know this place is like Rumor Central on steroids. BS flies fast and thick. A prime example in the comments about the new gun order:
  • Anonymous said... The range training fee is to be about $100. The training will take place at Area 2. Your watch commander must sign off on it.
We can understand the training for an optional new weapon should be done off duty. This isn't a required change of equipment so no expectation of Department funded training is forthcoming. But what's this about a $100 range fee? We already have to give up two days off for training - now they want $100 too? Something smells about this one.

Everyone is jumping to conclusions on this event already and there isn't even an official published order yet. Let's everyone step back, take a deep breath, and wait for the signed order and training schedules to be published and see if this $100 fee is even part of the equation.

Sorry to take us off such an interesting topic. BUT...

Lately not only in Chicago but around the country I see all these shitbird,scumbag,criminals getting parole, probation, or other early releases and then getting on the streets and commiting more henious crimes than what they were originally locked for. This really, really pisses me off! Because not only is it dangerous to the average citizen but twice and dangerous to us the POLICE.

Case in point, in today's SCUM TIMES I read how some murderous asshole ( ALREADY "CONVICTED" MIND YOU FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER, AND OTHER WEAPONS VIOLATIONS AND VIOLENT CRIMES in 1996) gets out and shoots up 59th and Calumet amd then gets curbed by the police an hour later at 59th and Indiana and he kills himself (That's the only good part about the whole story). Fortunately no Police Officers got hurt but that's beside the point.

We are held to this HIGH standard that we are not allowed to make any mistakes and are quickly punished for it. (In most cases it's warranted). YET!!! These liberal punk ass JUDGES fuck up all the time and they are never dealt with. A system needs to be put into place like OPS / IAD that quickly takes Judges off the bench that break the law or fail to follow judicial procedures. AND DON'T TELL ME ABOUT THE ARDC because that's a joke. First it's all Judges, Former Judges, and Lawyers that make up that organization so you can forget that. It should be eliminated.

Second the ASA's that screw up should be dealt with too.

There should be a investigative body that investigates misconduct by all lawyers and Judges. And this board should be a bi-partisan civilian panel that is appointed by a commitee from the state, and that all canidates for this organization will not be a crony of ANY elected official so as to avoid any appearence of tampering with the process. They should have subpeona power and answer only to the attorney general to forward a case for prosecution,disciplne, or censure.

That way we can insure that ALL defendants and VICTIMS are treated fairly. And these cocky arrogant lawyers/judges will conduct themselves accordingly and when some dirtbag criminal like the one mentioned above commits a crime after getting out EARLIER than the law allows that everyone and I mean EVERYONE involved in this goof getting back on the street are quickly punished!

END OF RANT...

You nitwits kill me. No there is no Range Fee, yes you will need your own ammo, 400 rounds ball, 100 rd duty. Yes, it's on your own time and will be at a north side and a south side range. 2 days for officers wishing to use a striker fired hired after 01 dec 1991 and 3 days for officers fired before dec 01 1991 wishing to use a striker fired. Officers wishing to use a conventional firing system and have it registered before some date in about 1991 may use this as their prescribed, but will need either attend a 3 hour or 3 day class. Don't be the first to carry a striker fired if you have not attended the transition course. The punishment will start at 15 days. If you have a 229 DAK, don't bother changing. That's a nice gun with a 6.5 pound trigger. Be safe, love each other, and hope it doesn't get worse.

My GOD, we have some sensitive people here don't we. Well I would agree with the old farts IF we could actually carry .357 ammo in our .357's, but that has been deemed overkill by the brass who don't know squat about guns. Smith and Wesson makes a great revovler and I would be happy to carry one if we could feed it propper ammo. I do like the new 9mm load we can carry but it's still 9mm, might as well have a .38. The .40 is a good round but would be better if it was streched back to it's original 10mm, the Bren 10 is a kick ass gun. My Sig 220 is a great gun too and I have never had (or even heard of) the trigger return spring failure, care to expound on that officer?Is there a safety bulletin on it? My only real complaint on the Sig is the parkerized finish sucks and it tends to rust if not looked after constantly. I think if I was to purchase a new gun I would go for the .40, still carry the Sig 220, but I like the idea of a larger than 9mm or .38 back up.What I don't understand is, why is there a two day training course for striker fired weapons? It's a pistol,this isn't rocket science, this could be taught in a half hour or an hour at worst. The real problem is most cops aren't gun people. Most wear it(the gun) as jewelry or a status symbol, it's a tool which you should be totaly familiar with regardless of caliber.This also brings up another point that I am displeased with. Why, when we qualify, are we Bullseye shooting when we should be Combat shooting. They are very different techniques and in a stressful situation, Combat shooting always wins out.

You said,

"I think if I was to purchase a new gun I would go for the .40, still carry the Sig 220, but I like the idea of a larger than 9mm or .38 back up".

9mm = .38 Cal
10mm = .40 Cal

By going to the .40 Cal from a 9mm makes no sense., it's 1mm bigger and about the same volocity.

Get a higher grain bullet with a higher volocity for your 9mm. Then put the money you were going to spend on a new gun in the bank for your retirement.

If you need to upgrade form your 9mm, get a .45... Now before all you experts start sniping at me. I Am not saying the .40 Cal is a bad round. Just saying there is no real tactical advantage by going from the 9mm to that .40 Cal...

The trigger reset spring failure is actually quite common. I had such a failure during qualifications.

For my weapon (a DAO baretta) I only needed to flip the trigger forward manually to fire the weapon. For sure, not a good thing, but could be worse.

Still, this spring has a history of failures, is very cheap, and not too difficult to replace.
(If you got your pistol from Shore, Harvey will replace it for you in about 5 minutes).

11:08 was right. There is no real advantage in switching from the 9 to the 40. And his little chart comparing the different calibers was also right. The 40 was designed because the FBI was using the 10mm. The female agents couldn't handle it and wanted a round which was basically the same as the 10mm but still be able to handled by the female agents so S&W developed the .40 S&W. In many circles it's referred to as a short 10mm. Same thing with the 9mm. In many circles it's referred to as a 38 short. Point is that he was right. If you want to get a new gun and think that the 40 will solve all your woes, go ahead and get one.But a thinking man will realize that because there really is no tactical advantage by switching between the two, will keep his nine, do some research on which is the best 9mm bullet and then spend some more time at the range. As Jeff Cooper, considered by many to be THE MAN when it came to sidearms once said, "the 40 caliber bullet is a solution to a non-exsistent problem". The only real upgrade from a 9mm is to go to either the .357 (which once again is really nothing more than a souped up .38 ) which we can't carry or a .45 which we can. So the answer is obvious. ALL pistol rounds suck as a personal defense weapon. There is almost NO difference between any pistol round be it a 9,10,40,357 or 45. We carry pistols because we can't carry rifles.
