- The lunch on the end has now become problematic. If you have to swipe out, will you have to justify missing your assigned lunch?
- Parade details, festival details, auto show details, Taste details, all sorts of details - if you are swiping in and out at the "Command Post," are these now a full 8 hour tour? Say goodbye to all the volunteers they used to get for these events - say hello to reverse seniority.
- The "early out" in special units has just ceased to exist. Teams cannot carry people on the sheets as being there if it isn't reflected on the swipe machine. Gun day? Gone. Award Ceremony as a tour? Gone? We won't even go into the old "double team days" that fell by the wayside years ago.
Let's at the most basic benefit that has just gone bye-bye. You do a favor for a supervisor, maybe volunteer for a late paper job, grab a couple movers, maybe write a curfew or three when the watch is down numbers. Your reward? Drop a slip for an hour on the end later that week and if nothing comes up, that's all she wrote.
Swiping out has just eliminated that little joy. If you swipe out early, that slip better be in to justify it. If you don't swipe out at all, there are bound to be repercussions at some point. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There's only a few ways for this to play out:

- If you swipe out even 8 minutes late, somebody or a number of somebodies are going to file a large grievance for unpaid overtime, which they will probably win after 4 or 5 years.
- There will be a very large scandal of ID cards being traded/passed around for specialized units or teams attempting to keep the good old days around. The weak link here is that the one sucker who has to stick around and swipe out everyone else will end up losing his job for fraud.
Anyone have any facts? Any ideas? The most annoying thing about this whole situation is that the bosses implementing it are the ones who benefited from it for years and years. Now, we doubt they ever reach for that ID card when they walk in and out. Of course, this could all be bullshit.

I doubt it will work they sent me to HQ twice for a new card. Mine works at th gas pumps, 35th st, and area one but no where else.
I think we will get the hand swipe machine in the near future

The department has begun electronic Attendance and Assignment Sheets on a pilot program in a few units. You sit at the computer and everyone is marked present for duty. You then go down the watch list and change the people who are off and list the absence code. This is the same information as the old paper A&A sheets, but now they are instantly searchable. The instruction book I got stated that Personnel and IAD would be the only one's allowed this seach access. Grau came out with a order about two weeks ago, instructing everyone to swipe in. I've been told that spot checks will be made matching the Kronos Swipe card data against this new electronic A&A Sheets. Forget about giving someone all of your ID cards to swipe for you. Eventually every unit will have a machine that you will use your ID Card and a palm reader to mark you present for duty. One machine is alreay set up at the 19th District. The first time you use the machine you put your hand on the scanner and swipe in. The machine will read your palm print just like in the lockup and remember who you are. From that point on no one other than you can swipe in with your card.
The bottom line is that swiping in is going to get for real. I've not heard anything about swiping out. Two weeks ago, an audit of the CTA disclosed 29 Million dollars in saleries paid to their employees, who were not shown working. Big stink about this as the CTA tries to get more money from Springfield.

If this is put into place to track hours, the days of getting a lunch denied because of a backlog and not putting in a slip for that lunch are over. Our work day is 8.5 hours with only getting paid for 8 (the .5 is an unpaid lunch). You can bet that if I have to physically swipe in at 1500 and then out at 2330 and was denied a lunch, an O.T. slip is getting filled out. Swiping takes the Sgts. and W/C's out of the equation to balance it and just leaves us and the punch clock. I am not going to give the city a half hour of my time for free.

This is obviously a subject of interest to our readers. And if the Department is going to start requiring swiping in AND out, you can bet that we're going to be pointing out that everyone ought to be getting paid for their extra time at work. And maybe, someone can start looking into how the the variuous meritcloutorious special political spots get paid 8 for a 5 hour day.

Working an 8 hour shift is just fine by me, I have never complained about it but I do recall not getting paid for a denied lunches many times.So and so watch commander "I'm not paying you guys for lunch". Well fine now you will have to.If the department is going to be so damned pimpy about this, I damned sure demand my lunch or a paid slip and you can be sure I'm going to get late heads.

It really is very simple if you think about it. As working coppers how many times does a boss come up to you and ask you to get him something.
And for a good boss there is no problem doing that because you know he will take care of you for being a go getter.

I hear theres a forehead swipe machine comin soon. You will have to run your forehead over the scanner. It records the unique wrinkles, scars, etc. on your forehead to identify you. Rumor has it that lots of big bosses will have the scanners set at belt level height, under their desks, for the many Clout-Babies, who will swipe up and down repeatedly in order to get their next spot or promotion.

WRONG! Why do coppers just make shit up? The Department has NO "palm readers"!!! The readers that are installed throughout the city take a digital photo of the BACK of the hand not your "palm print"
Good Im glad and hopefully they use the hand palm device. And if they dont and stick to the swipe card hopefully they install a camera above the swipe card machine and anyone caught swiping someone else out should be fired. Im sick and tired of all these tac guys working only 6 hour days and people on the watch working their full 8+ hours. We work for the city and we are always arguing that we dont get paid enough, yet all people want to do is scam the city. Maybe if everyone started doing what they had to do and put in a full 8 hours like everyone else in the world we would get taken care of. But that is not the case. Police are the biggest babies, they complain, they whine, they try to get away with murder and i am sick of it. If you dont like your job quit. Nobody needs you. The city will survive without you. if this is the case, then where is the FOP on this issue? Everyone should get a copy of their official swipe in / out records, per payday, to check its accuracy to avoid being screwed out of time. How is an attendance/time grievence to be handled, and handled impartially if there is a discrepancy? Also, if this is true, then there is no more need for any District, Unit, etc. timekeepers, none whatsoever, and Sgts. will have more work to ensure accuracy and correctness, therefore, even more work for all Sgts;and also, if Sgts. are doing all this additional micro-managing, then why are Inspectors necessary at all? They should be in the field, and bt. Sgts. and Lts. are already expected to be on top of their field personnels actions.
I have to swipe my card like 50 times to get it to work. I gave up on it like 6 months ago because it's so fucking annoying.

When they first started this swiping idea about 10 years ago. The bosses realized that swiping in and out would affect them. That's why we only swipe in, and on occasion. They may make us use the palm reader, but I think only to swipe in because swiping out would spoil their game also.

The problem with the job is that people forget how patrol operates. There are Sgts/Lts at 35th Street, look at Chief of Patrol office, these people spent less than a year on the street after their promotion and years inside before their promotion. They have no clue on how to run this department.
There are many police officers that make no arrests. There are police officers that have made less than 5 narcotic arrests in their career. Making on-view arrests is optional, and most of your gangbangers and dope dealers are arrested on an on-view arrest. For the few that still make these arrests on a regular basis, the process has become a hassle. First you must deal with the Desk Sgt. and god help you if you have an arrest + an inventory - making them do double the work, second W/C, and finally with lock-up. Dealing with the shithead is secondary now. Nobody on this job no longer wants to do the assignment. In some districts, you have a hard time finding the desk sgt.
But now, work until 330am, sleep 3 hours, then attend court at 9am - why for? Overtime? Most police officers have kids and the lack of seperate court dates makes having court as your second job impossible.

They're not "Palm Readers" as you call them. They actually read the back of your hand, not the palm. They've had these things in Homan Square for several years now... since 1999, if I recall correctly. If you got a cut and/or band-aid on the back of your hand, the scanning device won't recognize your hand anyway.
Doesn't matter either way, though. Hand scanners didn't stop rogue SOS guys from doing dumb shit. This is all smoke and mirrors to intimidate people into refraining from abusing time due, early ducks, etc.
Remember when there was a big stink about ticketing and towing illegally parked squad cars? Where did that nonsense go?.... right in the toilet! This swiping thing comes up like every 12 to 18 months and always seems to fall by the wayside. I'll swipe like every other pawn in the Kingdom of King Richard until everybody starts forgetting and eventually not swiping at all, like always. We're talking about electronic equipment here. There's too much room for errors and failures with thousands of coppers swiping in and out every day. Remember, these bosses gotta justify their existance and put out memos and orders and stuff so it looks like they're... well, "bosses." Most of them forgot where they came from after their clout has gone to their heads and they kiss-up to those above them to improve their present status.
The only thing you can do is answer your calls and don't go out of your way to give them anything that makes THEM look good. Ride it out, max out your deferred comp (no matter how much it kills you now) and retire as soon as you hit fifty. You may not get as much on your monthly pension, but you'll live a helluva lot longer and collect waaay more from da Mayor in the long run.
There was an article in the scum times a while back about a bldg.(I believe it was a county bldg.), that had a lot of people with pinkeye (very contagious) from the palm reader. Will this be an IOD?

I believe this is great! I work on one of those specialized units. We work 8+, 9+, and even 10+ and most of the time don't take lunch and don't put in a slip. So bring it on, and quit your whining. Can you see it now. All of the overtime that the city never paid. We will have to be paid now.

The palm readers are popping up all over....I've seen them in a few places 011, 019, obviously Homan Sq.....What if someone can not palm in, how will they fix the dilemma?
Fyi, we at OEMC have had the palm print w/swipe card for about 2 months. A small number had problems with their cards , but I think they have all been resolved.
Make sure they install the sanitizing dispenser at the same time. We had to wait several weeks before they were installed. You just never know what the hands were last touching (from the persons) that swiped before you!
I was wondering about the sgt's, Lt's,Capt's and the rest of the exempts, will they also have to comply?
How about the "super-secret" CPD members who are in all those silent unknown units? How about the Homeland security guy in DC each week?
Lastly if this becomes policy, we should DEMAND it of our elected city council members. They too can swipe in and out, so we know they are actually doing something other than wiping Daley's ASS!

For all you misinformed people. The handprint machines still require you to swipe your id, then place your hand on the machine. Furthermore, every other city employee has to use them, why should the police department be exempt?

ALL BULLSHIT!!!! The city has already dropped the Kronos machines' contracts. There is noone to service them. They were suposed to be used to track all people and be compatable with a payroll system. They are not. Our rotating days off and our use of comp time thrws everything off. The city does not NOW want to pay to upgrade and update the system so they do not work for payroll. The reason they keep them and they keep telling people they are required to swipe is 2 fold. First: They can keep the fear of the alleged "Ghost Payroller" getting arretsed and spread rumors all of the time about people at court and such getting popped (have you actually ever personally MET a person who has been arrested/fired for this?) for theft. Second: They can read it in reral time and figure out theirmanpoer at any given time in case of an emergency like a terrorist incident, natural disater, etc... Believe me if you want or not. This is what I have been told from someone that has some whack and knows the inspector's office....
I hear theres a forehead swipe machine comin soon. You will have to run your forehead over the scanner. It records the unique wrinkles, scars, etc. on your forehead to identify you. Rumor has it that lots of big bosses will have the scanners set at belt level height, under their desks, for the many Clout-Babies, who will swipe up and down repeatedly in order to get their next spot or promotion.

Wake up goofs!!!!!!!!!! No one on the Chicago Police Dept wanted swiping in and out, nobody!!!! The poster who said it was the dept of finance is correct. The Chicago Police Dept is the only city agency that does not swipe in and out everyday. You can blame your fellow city workers for part of this. The alderthieves are the number 1 culprit. If they stop getting their thieveing friends no show jobs (yes it still happens) we wouldn't have to worry. The State of Illinois wants more accoutability out of the city when they write them checks. Thats your problem. We are victims not of our own making.
Swiping in and out will be a good thing. Numbers will drop and OT will go up or complaints will go up because of a lack of police service. There is a backlog in almost every dist in the city on Fridays and Saturdays. The busy dists have a backlog everyday in the summer. Read your union contract lunch can't be right out of the box or on the end. The supervisors will be trying to give you lunch at anytime to stop OT, don't let them!!!!! The city will be forced to hire more PO's. That is what is needed anyway.

I work at the building why does frank wilson have a fully equipped police edition crown vic with all emergency equip? I thought that violated law? why is it while other city employees are paying money from their checks to lease cars, and they pay for there own fuel FRANK WILSON HAS A FREE CAR? HE IS NOT THE POLICE! **Talked to a guy fixing one of the Kronos machines. We talked about the palm readers and he did say they were outdated and breaking down. The company will not send them any more palm readers because "as usual" the city hasn't paid the bill :)
They will probably come eventually but they still have many to install. Streets & San, CFD, CPD. I will wait and see what happens.
If we have to start swiping out, can we start doing like streets and san, and swipe out at the police or fire station closest to our houses

I have 20+ yrs and am currently working tact. The perks are good, but we also put up with the changing of hours, shifts and days off for bullshit details. Swipe in & out and i will bid to days and make it without a problem. I admit, tact arrests are 80% nonsense, but they are nonetheless numbers that keep the district afloat at the accountability meetings. Start swiping in & out, and you'll see a mass exodus, and thus a drstic drop in arrests. Why work till 0200 or 0400? C/D does not mean that much. I'll put the uniform back on in a heartbeat!

I was just at one of the refueling centers and they have the palm reader installed, they way it works you swipe your ID card then place your hand on the reader which confirms that you are who you swipe you are.

To "off topic:" You can believe the cmdr doesn't pay attention to the radio if you want to. He's reeled in a number of people who thought no one was paying attention to the fact that they were goofing off. He monitors the waves very closely when he's there.
No smoke and mirrors about the guy at all, and he's backed up lots of coppers on calls. You can tell when a boss is the real police.
If the information about the palm scan is true, its kind of scary. The CPD or city has all your personal data (ssn, dl, DOB, etc), have your prints on file, now they have your palm scan. All that's missing is your DNA. OK some of you are saying I'm a conspiracy nut, but just think who really runs the city, the outfit, they have access to all this data, via "the hall" not to mention some minions in the CPD. Think about it.

It is not another reason to do police work. The only guys working 8-4-8 are the guys working the blue and white cars. Gee-its coming to an end for units and the D2A unit. No sympathay here.
The hand scanners at homan are not, I repeat not tied to the A&A sheets in any way. They are utilized to unlock doors to gain admittance. And as earlier stated they look at the back of your hand, not the palm. There is a record of whose hand was scanned, what time and what door was opened. that info can be checked historically, if the computer is used correctly. However, if the first guy puts his hand in, and holds the door open everybody in the world can come in and theres no record.
And yes, if you are a clean freak, you should be concerned about what's on there from a sanitation standpoint, because you are touching everything that the last guy has touched. But that also applies to doorknobs, steering wheels, computer keys, telephones and everything else that is "shared". So carry a bottle of sanitizer, wash your hands frequently or don't fucking worry about it, because not many people die from those germs. so relax on that shit.
As far as swiping, if it happens, it happens. This is after all a business, and businesses change all the time. Early ducks and coming in late without penalty are great, and not many haven't benefitted (some more that others) but sometimes shit just comes to an end. When I came on, there were still guys talking about how they hated it when the personal carry radios came around. They adjusted, and we will adjust to swiping (if it in fact happens). As Steve Winwood would say....you got to roll with it, baby.

I have no problem swiping in and if it comes to it I will have no problem swiping out. When I get a late job I will make sure It goes into OT and there is nothing the W/C can do about it. I look at it as a plus for all of us in patrol. No more fighting for a slip to be signed. Your time in and out is all documented.

In the future I see about 15 or so officers standing in front of a palm reader/card swiper bullshitting for the last fifteen minutes of thier tour, waiting for the clock to strike **:30.

Thats, okay. The minute I get denied lunch because of the everyday back logs and low manpower, I'll gladly fill out an overtime slip for 1/2 hour each and everyday.
Half the fucking machine don't work just like all our other equipment. Plus my card doesn't work in half the stations or gas pumps I go to. Hmmm, now what.
If I have to swipe in and out, fine. Then that means EVERYBODY has to do the same. My sgt's, my Watch Commander, the DISTRICT COMMANDER and all the BOSSES at headquarters that put in 1/2 days all the time. Same goes for IAD officers, etc. Now who is watching over them???
I have to go to walgreens now and buy some more vasoline cause I ran out. I have to be prepared to get my night stick stuck up my ass again by the city. It's been happening for several years now.

We got a "memo" a long time ago in 014 to swip in. I guess they're also tring to pass memos as G.O.'s now.

Just got off probation and I've been on tac for a month. I love the 4 and 5 hour days but if the swiping thing is for real I might as well go back to the watch. You know what you could do with your two years. Why do you half ass coppers always bring up tact guys and how you work in the ghetto? FYI most coppers who work in pretty good districts worked in the ghetto, and while you are driving around your busy district being the REAL police all these tact and gang guys are sitting at details like BUD getting shit thrown at them, in a 100 degree heat, working 11-12 hours with no lunch. Your problem is that you can't do the job as good as these guys and girls are doing. It is not because you are in a Blue and White (becasue that is how all off these people got on tact, gangs, SOS, narc, Vice etc......) The problem is you are the P.O. who sees tow bumbs drinking on one side of the street and two shit heads selling sope on the other and you will take the two bumbs because you are truly afraid of the Gang bangers selling the drugs.... Yet when I post how much of a beaten down worker ant that i have been during my carrier, I get ridiculed for being just a little piss ant.

Ive read so many "civilians" complain about some of the perks that we might or might not get.Some are a way for the bosses to thank us for the work that we have done, just like your 60-80 hr. work week job.{By the way, most coppers i know work at least 1 other job, sometimes 2 or 3 if they can schedule them right,kids,school,family,social life} Im sure there are ways YOUR bosses say thanks to you as well,{your perks}Because you didnt state what you did i have to list a few of the things that annoy me about "real world" job perks. I have friends that work "regular" jobs and have been told about their perks;company paid cars cell phones,$1200 laptops, trips all over the world w/an expense account "to see clients",$20k-$40k bonuses for meeting deadlines/goals,huge discounts on whatever products they sell. I could go on for a while but i wont, the point is we all have perks at our jobs. It might sound like i am envious of the other "regular" people, i assure you i am not. I dont think i could do most of those jobs, and not for lack of education,training,drive,I probably would be BORED!!
So the next time you are getting angry that we might be BITCHING, think about YOUR perks from work, and remember that i have to pay for my car,laptop,celphone,trips,dinners,gas,and have to pay full price for the things you get at the "employee price". The pass i get if im stopped for 40 in a 30, or the 1 or 2 hr. duck i might get for busting my ass and not taking a lunch the day or two before is NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS! The "perks" the "real world" get come only with the high paying jobs that you could not get. Trust me, your college degree did not prepare you for the PRIVATE SECTOR. That is what it is called. And it is easy to pick out the posters who have never worked the private sector because had they ever done that (beside Jewel, McDonalds, Target, a bar) you would see how truly great we have it. Great pay, less stress, a lot of fun!! But if you have never been there you wouldn't understand. I have been there (15 years in private sector and 22 years in government) so I do know what I am talking about.

Well in City hall and other places about the city you swipe in and place your palm in the reader. It gives you an reading from 100 to 1 the lower the better and the light goes green. You are the only one that can swipe in and out. If not I.D. does not register and you are considered AWOP. If we(old timers) swipe in and do no work no big deal, but the new idots that they bring on now will swipe inand still give capt./lt crotch rot the numbers they don't care. The new ones don't have a clue on how to get tings done and they think we owe them the &T%&% world.

The funny thing is, i was in the private sector for some time, and i dont mean like i worked at a cell phone store for cash. I think you and i have a lot in common but we will never know. We can both play the resume game but what does it matter we both have our own opinion on our backgrounds.Sorry but i COULD get the jobs you are talking about, i had one of the large Co. want to talk, and i dont mean a U.S. held CO. either. I find the stress less w/CPD, call me crazy!!!Who knows, you and i might have sat across the table from one another at one time, you never know. {i have at LEAST 15yrs. as well including a senator and some WELL KNOWN sports figures, celebrities, and some consulting on some things in the middle east}I thought about going into the government end{civ.w/army and D.O.D} but didnt want to move from Chicago and have the wife start over as well,im starting to regret that, this city is really starting to suck. Just because im CPD doesnt mean im like what you and i have seen and had to deal with running any type of details, especially A POLICE DETAIL.AND I COULDNT HAVE SAID IT BETTER, TAKE THE COLLEGE AND THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW, YOU EITHER HAVE WHAT IT TAKES OR YOU DONT.Sometimes the gravey train comes to an end or you get burnt out or both, thats what happened to me. I worked 40+hrs. per week with CPD and did another 40 with a company and handled a client w/60 odd locations, so add another 10 hrs. on the phone,{as well as like 90 or so employees under me} YOU know what i mean.Im sure i cant hold a candle to what you have done or do now but still earns me the right to say ive done the PRIVATE SECTOR as well. You are right it was fun and it was nice on paydays and the life style was fun, I just got burnt out. BUT to see what you had worked on all week, be on the news ALL OVER THE U.S. that was cool. I am thinking of getting back into it, the wife and i saw a $500+k house we like and she wants that stupid Hummer h3 so it might be back to the old grind again. I think you and I maybe "misunderstood" what the other was trying to say,{way to many haters and WANNABEEs out there} and for the record im NOT a twenty something hairgel college boy. I have the grayhair, the resume, and the NATIONWIDE contacts to prove it. Stay safe and enjoy that side of the biz....dont work too hard...LOL!!

WOW i didnt think i would have to defend a statement that i made as far as things that have happened, and were said to me. ESPECIALLY by someone who wasnt there!I had to have surgery from an attack by a convicted felon that was trying to escape. The statements about haveing my life and families life threatened have occured SEVERAL TIMES by high ranking gang members and murderers, sex offenders...... { have the court time to prove it} SO sorry if you dont believe me, you dont have to, nor do i care. It wasnt a complaint, i was stating FACTS my friend. I wonder how you know if these things happen or not, are you the police?Probably not, if you are, what rich suburb do you work? Even though you are a doubting thomas try to stay safe out there too, the bad T.V. PEOPLE might get you too!!!!
