Happy Fourth of July

Have a happy and safe celebration. Watch out for Commanders hiding in the bushes. We'll check in this evening after the smoke clears.

Its a strange way to celebrate a holiday. Launch explosives in the air? Allow small children to play with 1400 temp. sparkling rods? Maybe driving around honking your car horn is not that bad after all.

I like the cops who say that Canty school should hire off-duty cops for security on the 4th. If the on-duty cops in the area did their jobs these side job guards would not be needed. I've seen how most off-duty cops work on side jobs. (read papers, sleep in cars, etc.) Hell, I could probably pay some MLDs protection and get better service.

Happy 4th of July to everyone, and thank you to our military for all that we have…

Open Post:

My friends were visiting from out of town. On their last day, we went downtown to the Taste & Fireworks. My friend’s husband is a (recently) retired FL cop. First of all, there was a complete lack of police presence and crowd control. My girlfriend almost got hurt, because we were all pressed together and could barely move ANYWHERE. At that point, I had to go into full city mode and protect myself, elbows up and trying to move to locate a place to get out of this mix.

It was the equivalent of being in an expanded housing project, people drinking/drunk just standing in one place blocking the foot traffic, hearing the word nigger repeated over and over, and very LITTLE police w/no control. It was the same thing repeated all over again as day turned night, and we headed to the lakefront to see the fireworks.

Why were private boats allowed to come near the crowd was beyond us. There could have easily been some whacked person or terrorists with a bomb or something on a boat. There were some lifeguards close to the Yacht Club, but none as we headed toward Soldier Field. There were some people talking about jumping in for a swim.

We left early only to go to the Roosevelt CTA station to board the Orange Line. This was around 10:15 pm or so. There was a huge crowd that wrapped down the street and then some, and a crowd way too large trying to squeeze into (3) doorways. People were getting hurt trying to get into the station. We finally made it to the platform which was dangerously over capacity. It was a surprise that nobody fell on the tracks.

It’s no wonder our city has the problems that we do. The police have absolutely NO powers where as the public has more power then they do. This was so apparent to myself and friends. We also need more police officers on the streets.

There is no way in hell Chicago will be able to handle an Olympic venue let alone any type of terrorist attack.

You people have something wrong with your brains, I mean all of you who like to legislate prohibitive laws about freedom. There is nothing wrong with fireworks in general.Firecrackers, bottle rockets, lanterns, roman candles, etc. are completely safe. Yes you shouldn't let small children play with fireworks, but thats called being a good parent, why do you need a law to bann all fireworks? Example;"Allow small children to play with 1400 temp. sparkling rods?"Hey genious, good parents would't allow that and should come to that conclusion on their own. Sure m-80's and aerial bombs are dangerous and should be handled by pro's but regular firecrackers? Why is everything fun illegal in Illinois? Well I'll tell you why, you people are all socialists, cradle to grave, let the govornment take care of me,I can't handle anything myself, socialists.Govornment can't take care of you, that's something you should have been taught long ago. You should be able to decide for yourself what's good for you and what's not. This fireworks example is just a small peice of the problem.People here in Illinois and I'll be more specific, chicago, are mindwashed into beleiving that they can't make a simple decision on their own about anything. You disgust me,all of you who think like that,or rather, who can't think or refuse to think for themselves. You don't deserve to celebrate the 4th of July because the 4th of July is about FREEDOM and you don't beleive in that here. Not everything is meant for "The Children", but I find there are very few "Adults" here in the city. Why don't you just bann the entire Bill of Rights, it's for "The Children".

How satisfying was it to see Huberman at the helm of the CTA on the busiest day of the year and watch the system fail miserably.

Just a little sidenote Huberman was riding the CTA last week and observed a PO working special close his eyes for a minute. Huberman went out of his way to jam this guy up.....took it all the way to the SUPER. He said the CTA is paying way too much to have a PO sleeping on duty (which he wasnt)......WELL RONNIE WE ARE PAYING TOO MUCH TAXES TO HAVE THE CTA FAIL ON THE BUSIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR and run like a third world system.......KARMA IS SO PLEASING ISNT IT? RONNIE IF YOU WANNA BE THE MAN U FIRST MUST BE THE MAN AND YOU NEVER WERE...WE DONT RESPECT YOU....THAT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN NEVER OVERCOME.

I watched the fireworks on channel 50 last night, being as I am sane enough to not go down there on my night off. Every time they panned the crowd, there were numerous young black males throwing up gang signs. Says a lot about Chicago right there. Maybe Mary Mitchell will write a column about it. Probably not. In any case, the video should be sent to the Olympic committee.

As for the person above complaining about not enough police presence: if every sworn officer in the City was down there, we'd still be outnumbered something like a thousand to one. There but for the Grace of God that nothing serious happened.

Their were a million people down there, just like every year, you would need 10,000 officers down there to properly handle it, factoring in that almost all are law-abiding. What did you expect? most street-saavy Chicagoans know better than to go down there at all, let alone on the 3rd.......

To LEM,

1 million people +, when the final count is done it will be more like 1.3 million.

Did you enjoy the food and festivities? Did you enjoy the music? Did you enjoy the fireworks?

Did you get robbed, beaten or raped? were you injured in any way? Did you arrive home safe?

Sounds like a fairly decent evening to me in a crowd or more than a million people.

What did you expect it to be, a walk in the park?

Walking around with your elbows up in the air to push through the crowds? Sounds like you were part of the problem!

And then you have the nerve to bash the POLICE because you were uncomfortable in a crowd that size.

NEXT TIME STAY HOME!

To Leomemorial:
Why on Earth would you bring anyone you CARED about down to the Taste on its busiest night? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
Didn't like being squeezed in with the million plus others? I don't either. THAT'S WHY I WON'T GO.
And shocked at the "ghettofabulous" language going on around the taste? IT'S A FREE EVENT. YOU GO TO THOSE KINDS OF EVENTS, YOU GET A LITTLE "FLAVA"
FROM EVERY CORNER IN THE CITY.
You've been in this City long enough to know where NOT to go on certain days, at certain events.
If you don't go there yourself, or with your family, why would you bring your friends? Also, if every PO in the City was downtown, it wouldn't have been enough for the 3rd of July at the Taste. BE GRATEFUL that at least up to now, no one has been shot, murdered or sexually assaulted at the Taste this year. Be especially grateful that no major catastrophies occurred with the "brownout" of the CTA EL system. I can't even imagine being trapped on a train with no open windows for a half hr. or longer. Thanks, Huberman!!

I'm no fan of Huberman, but no copper has any business being in uniform and having his eyes closed "even for a minute" while riding a CTA train. If you're tired, stay home. But if you sign up to work these special employment ventures, by all means, show up alert & sober. We've had enough embarrassment to the profession for this year.

Chicago is not the only place where things can get out of control on the 4th. Several years ago I was in Boston on the 4th. Went to the Boston Pops concert on the Esplanade. Boston PD was practically non-existent. There was NO crowd control. People kept packing into the lawn area near the bandshell. There were no police in the area to keep open aisles so folks could move.

Later, when there was no room to move and some people needed to get out to get food or drinks or use the bathroom, others in their path were getting stepped on or fallen on. Drunken idiots got into fights with others in their path.

A very petite woman with two little kids was nearly trampled near where I was sitting. A bunch of us linked arms, elbows out, and formed a circle around the mom and kids and made a path for all of us to get out safely. Some of us went to an area behind the bandshell where you couldn't see the orchestra on stage but could hear fine from the speakers and had a great view of the fireworks. BPD continued to be an utter failure on the scene when the crowd was leaving after the concert.

One thing that was done right that I'd like to see here was that the MBTA (local transit) police were counting heads of people going into the train stations and were letting in less than one trainful of people at a time. Everyone else had to wait on the street until a train had moved through the station. That kept the stations and trains a lot safer.

Well what type of police presence would you like there?
Every tac team & inside unit was pulled out and that wouldn't even put a dent in controlling the 1 million+ people they had there.
As I said in a previous post; if shit would have hit the fan, we would have lost. We were WAAAAYYYY out numbered. To listen to the white shirts say they had enough police coverage just made me laugh. You're right if we get the Olympics or any other big event(which I'm praying we don't), we're f*ed.

Seriously, we need more cops on the streets. Period. Taste or no Taste.

Since my friends were visiting out of town, they were really more interested in the Macy's Fireworks display. It was so bad that we couldn't even grab a dinner and had to wait until we got back to my neighborhood.

But back to the Taste of Ghettocago. Can't thsi city help you out? Doesn't the CPD have some type of cadet program? I saw some @ the Patriot Parade. They should also be charging soem type of fee, and then the city should use the money from the fees to hire American Heritage or some other kick ass security company to help our PD out.

P.s. Great coverage in the Clearing area last night by the skeleton crew out here... thanx
