Finally
New Weapons Approved!
Via SecondCitySarge:- I found this on the departments website.
Striker-fired pistols manufactured by Smith and Wesson, Springfield Armory, and Glock have been approved
The calibers of 9mm Luger (Parabellum), .40 S&W, and .45 ACP have been approved
Department members will be allowed to transition to striker-fired pistols as their primary weapon after they have completed a voluntary transition course during off-duty hours
Transition courses will consist of either 24 hours of instruction for revolver officers or 16 hours of instruction for semi-automatic officers
Transition Courses are being planned for the last three months of 2007; a schedule of courses has not yet been posted
Department members will not be allowed to carry a striker-fired pistol until they have either completed their basic recruit training with a striker-fired pistol or completed the required transition course
Department members will not be required to transition to a new firing system
Department members will be allowed to transition to a semi-automatic pistol as their primary weapon in lieu of their prescribed revolver

The range training fee is to be about $100. The training will take place at Area 2. Your watch commander must sign off on it.
Is Sgt. Plopke in charge of the training program for these weapons?
what is a striker fired weapon////////////???????
Ok that's something nice to hear but I have a question: What if I would want to still retain my beretta 9 mm as my primary weapon and just plan too buy a striker fire weapon as my secondary weapon, should I still go through the 16 hrs training before I can carry one as my off duty weapon? I was just planning to buy the compact or sub-compact .40 or .45 to carry as my off duty weapon.
Welcome to the 21st Cent!!!!
Thank you to Cline, might have been his last decision.
SCC, please post the order when found.
any word on what grain the dept ok for the 40 cal?
I have a question: As a revolver oriented person, I qualify yearly with my .357 4" revolver. This allows me to carry any approved revolver, most especially my snubnose .38. I have to qualify yearly with my 5" barrel Beretta. Under current rules, if I want to carry a .45 or another brand of 9mm, I have to qualifiy with each weapon.
So my question: If I make the transition to the Beretta, do I have to qualify with each brand and type of revolver? If that is the case, I'll remain revolver oriented and qualify yearly with my Beretta. it would a whole lot easier that way.
This is one of the better things the department has done for the officers in a while. Just another tool that could give us a little edge in a gunfight. To all the officers who worked on getting this approved great job and thanks!
THanks FatBOY,,,I will buy you lunch,,,NOT
Guns? Who cares about Guns? You can't shoot anybody. Can't wait till one of those cops playing with their Glocks shoots someone in the locker room. The dept. gun training blows. Half the people on this job have not cleaned their guns in years. I guess since the Glocks can function with little or no mantinance its good.
To 7/07 12:32 a.m.
A striker fired weapon has no external hammer. The weapon is cocked when you press the trigger, where the safety is alo located. the mechanism is different than the single action only and double action / single action semi automatics we are now carring. The one thing with the stricker fired pistols is to have a holster with a covered trigger guard for safety. Plus the striker fired pistols have no extrnal safety other than the one located on the trigger. You can get a better idea if you go to the Glock website. The Colt will be the XD model on the Colt website and the Smith and Wesson is the M & P model on the Smith and Wesson website. These will explain the exact workings.

Why do we have to pay? who's pocket does this go into? More for daley! I will still just carry my old reliable 357 and my s+w 669!
Just another thing the Dept. wants everyone to think is a BFD [big fu&*$(ng deal that really isn't. And whats this that a P.O. has to pay 100 bucks to be allowed to qualify? Only in Chicago, unfu*%ing believable. All for a bullshit handgun.
Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy, B.F.D.
I don't see what the big deal is. We are still severly outgunned on the streets. We might actually get MP5K's when these shitheads are walking around with Dylan Miniguns ala Predator. Most of the stuff we run across now could shred our bulletproof, oh wait, bullet-resistant vests. I say big deal. We need better, much better, much sooner.
It's a lot to ask for, but can we work on approving the Khar as an off duty or secondary weapon now. It is by far the best shooting, full power off duty pistol I've ever shot. New York approved it after allowing the striker fired pistols.
I'm happy with my Sig 9mm. Other than "I want too" could someone explain why this is needed? I am serious, not being a smartass. There could be a good reason, but dumb people like me don't know. Please explain. Thanks.
I don't know what all of the fuss and praise is about....we were able to carry .45 for years....and now that the dept has allowed...allegedly..us to carry .40 cal it's a big deal?? I'll take my .45 any day over a .40 cal and I have 2 kills to back it up...You can keep your 9mm and your .40....45 is the way to go and far superior to 9mm and .40 cal. One piece of advice if I may...I don't care if the department allows you to carry a howitzer....you need to be able to hit your target effectively...So go now and make the gun shops and manufacturers of these magic .40 cal handguns rich and buy in masses....just make sure that you can "Hit the target" with your magic new gun that is "better"....and to 07/07/2007 at 6:53am....just "how" will these weapons give us as officers an "edge"? I'm curious...you mean the bad guys can't get these weapons? or they don't have better , more powerful weapons? ...shot placement...shot placement...shot placement...and carry a superior firearm...a .45.
A striker fire weapon fires plasma in the 40 watt range. It's about time we got these.

There will be no charge for the training, except that you must attend on your own time, with your own weapon, and possibly your own ammuntion - the CPD cannot accept a 'fee' to use it's locations...
you moron.
Sgt. Plotke and Sgt. Sesso will be setting up the transition course training - probably to start in October for in-service P.O.'s
Striker-Fired weapons that will be approved include the Glock family of handguns, the Springfield Armory XD series, the Smith and Wesson M&P series. The new order will also approve the use of the Beretta 90-TWO and PX4 Storm Pistols, which are hammer fired.
Standards for .40 cal should be 155-185 grain JHP
7/07/2007 1:40am
That is the loophole in the new order. Stay with your revolver as a prescribed and just choose to qualify with whatever auto you choose.
07/07/2007 12:35AM
Yes, you would still need to qualify in the transition course to be approved for off-duty carry of a striker-fired weapon.
Remember, in a justified shooting, the dept. does not have to indemnify you for killing someone with a unapproved weapon.
The rules remain the same as far as if you are a revolver person, you can use any kind of 38 cal or .357 cal revolver, according to seniority date. IN other words, if you are a revolver person and go through the course for a semi-auto, you will now have to qualify with every revolver that you own to carry that, instead of just your primary duty weapon. I hope that's clear, the order is very long and does get kind of confusing at times.
About frickin time

Hey jagoff you must be the college asshole educated police! what happened mommy and daddy sent you to school and you failed out now your cpd! fuck you kid!
Doesn't matter, S&W and Glocks suck. Too many parts. Bound for failure. Or someone shooting another copper in the locker room.
"Smith & Wesson and Glocks suck"
Two of the finest firearms companies in the world and this ill informed moron decides they "suck"
You sir should not be allowed near any firearm!
I hate this blog why can't I stop reading it
JUST SEEN THE BERWYN SWAT TEAM. I THOUGHT THEY JUST DROPED OUT OF IRAQ.
QUICK QUESTION WHEN FIGHTIN IN A CITY IS GREEN CAMELFLAGE PROPER.
I THOUGH IN URBAN FIGHT ZONES YOU WEAR SOMETHING CLOSER TO THE COLOR OF CONCRETE.
JUST ASKING.
Someone said Colt makes the XD???
You are misinformed. It would be
Springfield Armory that makes the XD. Not aware Colt has a striker fire pistol. Others would include Glock, Kahr, S&W M&P and Taurus 24/7 model.
the propper cammo is dictated by your environment. on the west side it would be urban cammo print w/ a chip bag/weed overlay. in berwyn, il. an effective cammo print would be old ladies sweeping sidewalks/klotchkeys.

I'm not too sure about that. I own both of these guns. I have a Smith .45 and 9mm for work, and I bought a Glock 9mm years ago when I was in the service.
Never had a problem with any of them, especially the Glock. By no means am I a gun nut, or a range qualified guy - but I can shoot all three of them well. I would welcome the chance to use a Glock .45 for work but, IMHO, the gun does not matter, shot placement matters.
The Colt will be the XD model on the Colt website
-------------
Good luck finding an XD on the Colt website. Colt does not make a striker-fired pistol. The XD is manufactured by Springfield Armory, and it's a really nice pistol.

Most teams are a bunch of gear queers. They buy stuff because it looks cool. Most teams/police buy gear because so and so said so in the latest gun rag.
Swat is overated and over used, give us good patrolMAN.The patrolman is the elite.
I guess since the Glocks can function with little or no mantinance its good.

Yes,one of the reasons why the Glock is an excellent duty weapon. To the previous posters who say the Glock is a POS shit, you know nothing.Glock controls 65-70% of the police pistol market, its a great gun.
As to officers having ADs,well thats the depts fault for hiring folks that shouldnt be on the job in the first place.
You couldn't afford to buy me lunch, asshoel.
phil
Don't care what kind of gun you have, always carry a sharp stick for back up.
"I'll take my .45 any day over a .40 cal and I have 2 kills to back it up..."
Yeah a Poodle& a Kitten. Both off duty. Easy Tackleberry...

Well said, the hut, hut rigged up& locked on is nothng but a bunch of crap. Most SWAT Clowns are 1/2 assed POs to begin with, and crap their pants if the have to handle a Domestic or a CSA.
Overrated the Lot of them.
I AM THE PEACE AND LOVE POLICE, END THE VIOLENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The XD is manufactured by Springfield Armory, and it's a really nice pistol.
7/08/2007 12:48:00 AM
Springfield doesnt make anything, the XD is made in Croatia.Their 1911s are made by IMBEL of Brazil.
Springfield does in house gunsmithing/warranty stuff, but no real manufacturing from scratch.
There have been a few comments about the reliability of Glock .40 caliber pistols. Some feel that it can be tossed in a mud puddle, doused in goose shit and then wiped off and will continue to fire properly until the sun goes down.
I'm here to tell you that this is not the case. A number of years ago I witnessed a Glock misfire by a suburban officer involved in a pursuit of an armed robbery / agg kidnapping / car jacking offender. The bad guy crashed at 95th & Stoney Island and took off for cover behind a CTA bus while armed with a .32 cal pistol. The suburban copper was at the rear of the bus when the offender pointed his pistol at him. The copper, in fear of his life, tried to fire but the hammer fell and nothing happened. A couple of State cops at the front of the bus had the drop on the bad guy and he gave up. After all was said and done, an inspection of the misfiring Glock showed that the firing pin and it's channel was gummed up with old lube and carbon buildup from normal use. This prevented the firing pin from traveling thru it's channel, causing the misfire. This could have been a fatal situation but for the grace of God. Please, if you have a Glock, make sure you routinely clean the firing pin and the firing pin channel. This is not a normal part of field stripping a pistol for cleaning. In our Dept, our range officers do this at each qualification shoot.
Be safe. Retired ISP.

Im a Glock Amourer,NEVER NEVER oil/lube the firing pin or its channel. The Glock is a very forgiving pistol,it needs LESS oil than many other designs.
The Glock firing pin is stainless steel,it wont rust easily. The firing pin channel is lined with Glocks polymer material.
Have a certified and competant Glock Armourer look over your duty weapon annually.
IF THE DEPARTMENT CHARGES $100.00 THIS WOULD BE A DIRECT VIOLATION PER F.O.P. CONTRACT. The dept can only make purchase your own ammo and on your own time.
To the poster who was wondering why the Berwyn SWAT Team was all decked out in camo gear, the answer is obvious. Because they, as do most other SWAT Team throughout the country, like to play Army and this is their only real chance. They never could or would not join the military so they joined SWAT. Now they get to wear Army clothes, carry rifles, wear bandanas, carry a K-Bar knife, wear a helmet and look what they perceive to be cool. But your right, give me a good working patrolman any day over a SWAT guy. Speaking of which. How come that 001 Officer that contained the goof in that recent hostage drama downtown didn't get the Award of Valor? He did the heavy pulling while the SWAT guy just showed up and took a shot.

001st District guys got the Award of Valor. If they wanted the Police Medal, they should of went in the back door of the office and took care of business like the SWAT guy did.
Remember Full Metal Jacket? Some of the coments sound like Pile from that movie.
