A "Taste" of Police Work?

  • Police on Thursday gave a behind-the-scenes look to reporters at what goes into training Chicago police officers.
  • The police said by letting the public in on some of their guidelines and policies, citizens would understand police work better, and not immediately assume the worst during encounters. After a crash course in the basics and being outfitted with a police belt and gun, reporters got a chance to try to apply some of the lessons, Ponce reported. One exercise included a gunman holding a weapon to a woman's head. The person with the gun was training Officer Stanley Williams, whose job it is to train recruits to make split-second decisions in stressful situations like this one.
These media days are a good idea in theory. But we have yet to see a reporter change their viewpoints of the police because of what they experience here. Anyone else have an opinion on it?

Very rarely do I EVER see a positive news article about the police here in Philadelphia. The media practially portrays the police to be the criminals, and scumbags who commit crimes are glorified. It's so ass backwards.

I hate watching the news and I've come to dislike reading it in print or online as well.

Anything that's good, they make it ugly - everything from the job you all do to those in the military.

They're liberal idiots and are only looking for whatever sensational news headline that will sell, even if it's filled with half-truths. They care nothing about any of you or those who fight for their very freedoms they are afforded.

Eff the media!

Forget this nonsense!

Let each reporter do ride-a-longs outside the sterile environment of the academy.

And not with two hand-picked company men either. Real working police.

Perhaps this would be more effective.

Taunted by criminology students (who were former police) that he couldn't possibly understand what a police officers job was like, not having been one, academic Professor George L. Kirkham, often critical of police decided on a revolutionary step - to become a policeman, his prime objective being to establish "once and for all" that his frequent criticism of police was justified.
However, "walking a mile in the other person's shoes" completely reversed his attitude and after six months in the Police Force he returned to being a civilian and wrote a story of his experiences now regarded as a police classic, in which he stated "......I came home and took off the badge and blue uniform with a sense of satisfaction and contribution to society that I have never known in any other job".

While not a member of the media, Kirkham, like many liberal college professors, once took a similiarly dim view of the police.

How about this for an idea: Since Amy Jacobson is now looking for a job, why not propose that she go through the CPD academy like Kirkham? Let her graduate, spent 6 months in a fast district and then make a t.v. special about her experience.

It is another example of the idealistic bosse(s) trying to win over the media. You cannot argue or "win over" irrational ideologies. You can only force your opinions when in power and hope your tenure will last due to the support of your hopefully vertebrae"d" superiors. This is a limp-wristed attempt at an olive branch expected to be put in place by people who can barely train others who want to be the police let alone someone whose career could be made by one "story" about the police who, in their opinion, did not do there job correctly. I can almost guarantee this was either William's idea or some young exempt looking to make his mark. What the fuck were you thinking? Go through training, then to a busy district for at least five years. After I hear from the coppers you work with that you are good people, I may put an ounce of weight into your opinion. Until then, shut up, be a civilian, and and stop second guessing those whose job it is to respond to your calls for help.

I've talked to two. And though they appreciated the dog and pony show as a "human interest" story they can impress their dyed in the wool liberal editors with, even the smartest reporter knows that to advance in their jobs, they have to attack the police at every opportunity. So once again, SCC has it right.

I agree, it's a good idea "in theory". But the purpose of this day is the real question. If the media is interested in what training the recruit gets, it's a great idea. If the media is interested in the everyday experiences of an officer on patrol, then it's not realistic.

One might ask then, how the media could get a "realistic" experience and/or see what the average day is like in patrol or what the average officer feels about what it is he/or she does on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, it will never happen, that is, the media seeing what we experience. The reason is,in the academy setting, it's a sanitized version. The media observes how we are trained to react in a perfect world.

As we all know, in the real world, your back up isn't immediately on the scene, because there is a back log, and everyone is on a job themselves. The media isn't exposed to a situation where an officer is on the scene of a burglary in-progress or robbery and in searching for the offender(s)the officer has to deal with, homeowners that have accumulated so much clutter and filth that one should be wearing a contamination suit to properly enter the structure some call a residence or kids playing outside,as he/she search yards and buildings for the creep, walking onto land with over grown weeds and trees, or the yard that has a dog the size of a horse as a family pet; or the need to respond to a mother duck on the corner with her babies, or a plane circling above because a supervisor at OEMC tells the dispatcher they have to give the call out; and after dealing with all the nonsense of the day, an inspector arrives at check-off and admonishes you for having unpolished shoes or an extra pocket in your vest.
Even if a member of the media were to do a "ride a long" for a day, you can bet, the officer(s) would be hand picked for obvious reasons.

If the media has the time or interest in what goes on in the department, it needs to take the time, effort and money to do this. This would entail, listening to our calls, hearing the backlogs that are announced;investigating just how many officers and supervisors are hidden away in details or units with no purpose or who are doing a job a civilian can or is doing;the abuse of some, I say some, on the medical roll; the PDT situation (lack of or in disrepair) and radio problems such as batteries having a life of 4hrs. on a good day; Non-existent beat integrity; apathetic feelings of those in patrol who after experiencing all of the above, can't wait to retire and move away from this cesspool.

they enforce the laws and wishes of politicans.

Politicans have a bad name these days. You get to be part of that.

Plus Chicago cops have the gun control laws working against them. You do not control your politicans. They try and put those same failed policies on the rest of IL.

I agree with one of the posters here who stated that for the media to TRULY understand what we face every day, they should "ride along" with specific beat or tact cars in 015, 011, 010, 007, 006, 005, or 004. For several days. And THEN report about it. That sterile environment in the Academy just doesn't do any of us justice, and really gives the reporters only limited insight as to what street cops see and deal with weekly.

I would welcome any reporter to come and ride with me in 5, not for a day, not for a week, but a whole police period.

I'm sure the story would be the same in 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 15, and 25. Hell, 9 might even qualify in this too. Let amyome of these reporters come spend time with a rapid, beat, incident, or tact car for a whole period and then see what it is really like.

That would be an education worth its weight in gold and something they could not duplicate in the CPD Academey or at Northwestern.

I bet it was walk in the park for these reporters like when I was there. Everything was all mushy and easygoing. Too much classroom and not enough range or gym. Is Mac still there doing her step arobics and pilates??? I can tell you of about five to ten people that didn't even come close to passing gym, range or both. And there on the streets.

I don't know how it is now, but when I got there was the start of the pussificaion of the CPD. I can't tell you how many times I've seen some of these new p.o's just stand there as other officers are trading blows with some scumbag. Or some that let people get WAY too close, have their guard down, or put of with being talked down to by some hype. I'm not saying I'm the toughest guy out here, I've lost one or two. But I never lost one since being the police due to some great partners. That and the will to put bad guys in jail.

I hope things change, and I know we need bodies on the streets. But I dread to hear the news about somone being hurt or worse, only because his or her partner was too scared to lend a helping hand. Maybee next time I'm an AFTO I'll be honest and give the ppo the grade he/she really deserves. Rather than passing so they can act tough to their friends and to people on the street when there are 20+ coppers behind them

Speaking of training here is some info that might be handy to a few people.

FTOs are now carrying tasers. And most of them arent afraid to use them and know how to use them unlike most of the coward sgts who should also be carrying them but arent.

If you get into a situation where someone wants to fight you dont fight, just call someone over with a taser and let the taser do the talking.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to fight and get hurt when you have a powerful and persuasive tool that when used properly and correctly will render the scumbag helpless and you can get them cuffed and stuffed right away.

Myth: I will get shocked if i touch someone who is getting tased. You wont get shocked unless you touch the offender between the two probe entry points. The key to being successful if cuff the a$$hole while he is getting the 5 second tase.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask anyone now carrying the taser and I am sure they will be glad to answer any questions or help you in any way.

remember, take no @$#%$ from anyone, stay safe and stay smart.

If this entire episode doesn't show the general public and coppers in particular what TODAY'S media are capable of, nothing ever will.

In my humble opinion every aspect of this fiasco is suspect.

The media will manipulate facts, distort truth and report anything to attract numbers. FACTS,OBJECTIVITY,TRUTH,ETHICS AND MORALS ARE ALL WORDS UNKNOWN TO THE MEDIA.

This is probably why ratings are in the dump and people discard most journalism as garbage. Learn to discern the truth and read between the lines. The corporate media only serve one master, the wealthy power elite.

Let's do a fund raiser...give the reporters simmunitions training, we bid on who gets to shoot at each of the reporters, highest bidder gets the joy...I'm thinking the widows fund could really benefit from this!! I'm in for Jay Levine...

A lot of the so-called police on the job should join the media in that "ride-along" in 011 and 007.

How many worthless clout babies and house mice have never even seen a cockroach, let alone constantly responded to bloody in-progress calls? Of those, how many were annointed "merit" bosses?

Your typical exempt is a shameless pussy with knee-pads.

STFU, listen, you're not the only person who every worked in 007 or 011, get over it, it's no big deal, alot of people went there, they were smart enought to leave when they wanted to, or got the chance. Just because you either choose to stay or can't bid out yet is your problem, maybe you like giving waaaaay to much service to people that don't deserve it, most don't. Bloody in-progress calls, hahaha, who cares.....

"The more shit you have on your gunbelt, the less shit you have in your head"
~ quote from Ret. Sgt. Bill KASINAK 025th District

You fuckin' kids should take his advise. I'm sure "Sgt George" who has 41 years on the job would agree.

You goofs in 025 can't wipe your asses without calling for a sergeant every 20 minutes. If we called for a sergeant more than twice a night when I came on - checkoff was 25 minutes after the hour.

I AGREE, 3RD WATCH IN 025 IS A KINDERGARTEN. AND NO ONE KNOWS WHO KASINAK WAS ANYMORE. I HEARD THAT QUOTE FROM THE HORSES MOUTH.

I really enjoy the "old timers" (who put in 40 years and have been retired for 10) who criticize the "Youngsters" about needing our noses wiped, or about sergeants holding our hands, or how we are afraid, blah, blah, blah!

While I respect your service and your viewpoint. You are way off base here.

I wish I came on 40-50 years ago. I am just like you. I DIDN'T CHANGE, THE JOB CHANGED..THE TIMES CHANGED!

We are so constrained today, our hands are tied. We are barely allowed to do the job today.

I've heard all your wonderful stories of the "old days."

YOU:

You guys could go out and shoot a shoplifter or juvenile in a hot car (fleeing felon) and brag about it later at the gin mill, so everyone would buy you free drinks all night. Than you could drive home drunk, get in an accident, and it would be taken care of by the drunken bosses. You could get free tickets to Bozo circus or the cubs, sox, bulls, bears,or hawks..no problem..Then you could take the family to dinner at a nice restaurant, and balk at the bill telling the owner you'll have him shut down by the city if he doesn't COMP you..then on holidays you go down to fulton/lake st. market and get the turkey or ham for free, then on the way home grab a X-mas tree from the hillbilly selling them out of the vacant lot again for free, after subtle threats!Next you worked 1 day a week security at some university so your kids got free tuition..then you took $$ on traffic stops, and used it to buy a summer place in lake geneva, or michigan city/long beach/st.joseph for nothing that is now worth $500,000-1,000,000. (Same with your shitty northside ranch).

So years later you have memories of all the fun you had seldom doing work, drinking at work, having a pension, cashing in 5000-10,000 hours(stolen, not earned) at retirement for a lump sum usually in the $200,000 to 450,000 range and now have a Net Worth of 1 or 2 million dollars..ALL WITH A FUCKING GED OR H.S. DIPLOMA!

You've done well!

US: (today's officer)

Take shit from the public and get accused of doing all the shit you did because stereotypes die hard!

Get disciplined by ball-less bosses' because lovanda say's we called her "good boy" a bad-word! (no proof)

Get in a legit shooting that is 100% statutorally correct, but still get sued for wrongful death because "SUING" the city is now a revenue stream for DEMOCrats in this city.

Have to watch every step you make to avoid stepping in shit. That's why we call for a Sarge, let them take the heat and make the call to earn that D-3 pay they got meritoriously because (fill in the blank)

I drive a 7 year old car. Every retiree I see get's a new buick or caddy every couple of years.

I Will be lucky to have 2080 hrs to cash in when I retire, that'll buy a nice used car by than.

The 401k hasn't done shit in 10 years. I'll be lucky to get out what I put in it.

The pension and benefits is eroding with every single contract.(But Dineen,Nolan, and Donahue..Got their's!)

I could go on and on..but what's the point. You'd have to walk a mile in our shoes to understand.

CHICAGO -- The number of reported cases of salmonella poisoning from the taste of Chicago is growing fast, topping off at 378.

Twelve people have been hospitalized -- including one small child.

The investigation is now focusing on tahini, an ingredient in hummus that was served at a booth from the Pars Cove Persian restaurant.

Your "401k hasn't done shit in ten years"

And whos fault is that young man?

You and you alone control where it is invested.

If it is confusing to you, get some advice, put down the sports page and your comic books and read the financial pages. Or better yet, pay an investment adviser, it can be money well spent.

Review your account 3/4 times a year, at least, and make changes!

Have you talked to any reporters who've gone through this thing? Nah, didn't think so.

Sorry to disagree but Ron Magers and David Navarro have nothing but kudos for us."

Same goes for Deborah Rowe on WLS. She went through this program several years ago and she came out with a whole new respect and appreciation and for police.

Sorry to have to disagree with a poster here, but MAYBE the Sarge was doing the right thing when he stated to an officer who called for a tazer that "FTOs have them now, send an FTO.". MAYBE the FTO was closer to where the tazer was needed than the Sgt. was. I know that if I was in a situation that could be rectified safely with a tazer, I personally wouldn't care WHO showed up with it!!!
