Bar Closing

  • A popular Chicago nightclub, the scene of repeated violence captured on videotape, had its liquor license revoked and will soon be out of business.
  • Two months after the killing and two weeks after the I-Team first broadcast disturbing images of street violence, Chromium's owner and Chicago licensing officials reached a shutdown agreement.
What is a "shutdown agreement"? If it was an illegitimate license (and it was because the holder of said license admitted as much), yank the damn thing. But no, some political strings must exist somewhere, which Channel 7 most unhelpfully doesn't address:
  • As part of the agreement, Chromium will be allowed to stay open until December 3 to honor some promotion and entertainment contracts.
The City Law Department better hope no one gets shot or killed during these special events lest the taxpayers be on the hook for another few million.

Someone left a comment in another thread congratulating us on scooping the media for this one. They are mistaken as we only linked to Channel 7's original report and threw in a few unasked questions about connections and ownership - questions still not addressed for some reason, proving once again that the media does a half assed job with everything it touches regarding clout and the mayor.

They'll just open another club somewhere else.

Hopefully further away from the nice areas and in the ghetto somewhere!

Close all those troublesome joints. Lets have neighborhoods be quiet at night. Say No to drunks pissing in your alleys.

Brothers on Pulaski could reopen. That was always a fun and respectable spot. Heck, I bet the party going westsiders would love to get that establishment rolling again. I'm all for it! Bring back Brothers!! The brother has suffered long enough.

Doesn't surprise me at all. If you're a mom and pop tavern owner, the Liqour Commission will run all over you. If you've got connections and money, you get a slap on the wrist.

I'm going to go there, get drunk, get in a fight, get hurt and sue the crap out of the city for knowingly allowing this place to stay open even though they acknowledge that they are operating illegally. Apparently this is a sanctuary city for more than just illegal aliens.

It has to do with the real estate. If the license is yanked, that address can never get a liquor license again and it's property value will tank.

A voluntary submission of the license has no adversarial effect on the property. Thus, the business can be sold and a new liquor license issued.

It is all about the money. The real estate money.

SCC, What on earth do you mean by the "murder for hire portion" of the federal case against Finnigan? There is not other "portion" of the case. That's it. Murder for hire -- and it is still intact. PLEASE, can't you guys ever get the facts straight?

If you watched the Channel 5 News, you would have seen Carol Marin saying that the Feds were proceeding with this as a Civil Rights case, which we interpret as meaning that there is more to the investigation that just the "murder for hire" count.

You're welcome to disagree, but we end up being right more often than not.

No? Really???? Are you picking up on the sarcasm now? I could turn it up a notch if you like...just teasin' man. It was a real shithole from Brothers to 939 Club.

Remember the Fire Marshall went in there to shut them down for over-occupancy? Dude was nuts!!! By himself, on a slammin' Friday night tells them to shut down or there will be problems. That was a district response. Three hour episode before we could even open up Pulaski again. Ah, the good ole days...

We post exempt's names because by the nature of their jobs, they are public figures and have little expectation of privacy.

Finnigan, like it or not, is in the public eye and the subject of a wee little bit of scrutiny nowadays.

Your grasp of state law is non existent in this case. Just because a license holder is married to a cop doesn't mean she is ineligible for the license. If connected politicians couldn't get their wives and girlfriends licenses in a number of lucrative business dealings, how could they afford to live the high life?

Besides, Tony Perez couldn't hold a license because of certain items in his background, not a silly rule violation. Go do the research.

Your vendetta seems a bit on the personal side and was more than a little over the top in terms of personal attacks. We don't have time for that and you seem to be happy in your own little world of letter writing and fantasy protests. Go enjoy, but don't expect to drag us along for the ride. You have no freedom of speech here.

TOO FUNNY!! WHY IS IT THAT ANY TIME THERE IS LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE GATHERED IN "ETHNO DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES" THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF DISPERSING QUIETLY & NEAR RIOTS BREAK OUT. THAT'S WHERE 20/20 SHOULD DIRECT THEIR CAMERAS. AN APT TITLE,"MALADJUSTED LUNATICS & THE COMMUNITY THAT TOLERATES THEIR BEHAVIOR"

Exerpt from a Chicago Tribune article from Oct. 30, 2007:

It is illegal for the owner, who is married to someone who is ineligible to hold a liquor license, to have one; and the club had violated ordinances associated with happy hours, Stein said.

Id say the City's Department of business Affairs licensing spokeswoman knows the laws a bit better than you or I, SCC, so in response to your call for me to do my research, here it is!
So since we are all in agreement that no one employed by the CPD is eligible to hold a liquor license Jetts is in violation of the LAW! This is not rumor, nor is it a personal vendetta. It is simply a rebuttle to your uneducated nonsense!

Seeing the report on the news inspired me to write to LakeandHalsted.com and it is a very informative website. I wrote about it myself and its great that other bloggers like you are speaking up about this! Very courageous people in that neighborhood! Follow the money... and the truth will come out. This is a grassroots project that is actually coming to a good conclusion!
