Why have these benefits involving liquor? The general public views police as a bunch of drunken buffoons. How about a pizza party at Caeserland or Chuckiecheese?

She had no kids. Her family has lived in the parrish for 100 years. Has neices and nephews who do attend the school, that is struggling like most of the older parrishes are.

I am sure someone will be pissed about the question, but I have to ask, Why??
I worked with her and her brother and they were both very good police officers. I think that it is a tragedy what this family has had to endure.
She had no kids. She wasn’t married. Why do we need a benefit?
I am the first person to give when someone needs it but you need to explain why we should give. Just a simple explanation like she had a lot of debit or she had no life insurance…something.
That guy that died from S.O.S. in that motor cycle accident there was like 20 fundraisers for that guy. The names on that benefit committee are the same names that are in the newspapers everyday lately.
I would just like to see a way we could tell if it’s needed or just.. a nice jester to the family.

From what I see on all the posters, this is not a benefit for her at all. In fact, it is a fund raiser for a catholic school that is using her name. I am catholic but I don't really think that this is a worthy cause due to the fact that they are using her name and her picture in an effort to make it seem as if it is a benefit for her family which it is not. They should simply have their school fundraisers in an honest way like everybody else.

Precisely. Although Tragic, her Death should not be a catalyst for a Church Fundraiser. Disingenuous and just plain Wrong. This is what turns P.O.s off from supporting a worthwhile cause or Charity for that Matter. Tasteless @ Best...

How about just donating money to Gabe's in honor of a fallen officer? Is that so wrong? You don't like it, don't attend. But don't piss on her memory just because you don't understand why? Does there have to be a reason other than a memorial?

Because gabes is run by that ex PO Gorman who has a money influence at gabes. He got rid of the best pastor we ever had, Fr. John, and no other priest wants to go there. They really are fucked up as a parish. Rotten people running the show now too.

to the poster that signs always posts:

"Regards/ Former CPD 222 Beat Driver/ Working FED"

You are truly a stroke. You leave constant posts on this site and Second City Sarge. If you really are an ex CPD officer, you obviously miss the job so much and have a lot of free time with bs surveillances and paper work that you feel you must constantly visit our sites so you can stay in touch with the job you really miss, the CPD. Now get a life!

What federal dept do you work for, the Dept of Agriculture or are you now a TSA??

I don't think it's wrong to ask the reason for a fundraiser. Two years ago I had someone come up to me and ask me to buy a $10 ticket for a PO who was suspended. I gave, and came to find out the reason she was suspended was that she was drunk, off duty and told a Lt. of police to go fuck himself when he told her to do something..........I wish I had that $10 back.....God rest her soul, but asking why should be no crime.....If it's not about raising money, don't call it a fundraiser. A fundraiser for what????

Catholic Schools already have a built in fundraiser.......It's called tuition, also the reason I work two jobs....But because most the people of the Ville cannot afford to send their kids there (enrollement down) we should have a fundraiser?? And Kelly's bar #1 Hate outsiders, hate police and no where to park....Nice planning...If St Gabes wants the money, have it in the church basement...

Well, her childhood friends wanted to do a mini-fundraiser in her memory, a neighborhood thing that would benefit our parish since she didn't have a family left behind. By word of mouth it grew much larger and the outpour from her "police family" wanted to help just increased it's size even more. I'm not sure who is questioning why the money is going to St. Gabes, but that is where her family wants it donated. It's not St. Gabes asking for it, and her nephew (Jack's son) did not go to St. Gabriel. Mary Beth and all her siblings went there and all her childhood friends who are planning this event went there and we think it's a great cause... and a great way to celebrate someone's memory. And, if you don't like it, don't come - we don't need your negative attitude there, because that's not how Mar was - she was a very fun, loving and thoughtful person!

To all PO's on this blog. Your presense at this fundraiser isn't required nor wanted. This is not a fundraiser for you officers and frankly the people on this blog who feel the way they do are not invited anyway. This is simply a fundraiser in honor of a wonderful beautiful person on the first anniversary of her death that was put together by hose who were honored to call her a friend. For those of you who left the nasty messages my opinion is to really re-evaulate yourself because you don't know the meaning of brotherhood.

To all the Anonymous Cowards: This is not madatory for Police or anyone else to show up. So if you don't like what we are doing, don't come. No one is making you do anything. No, Mary Beth did not have kids, we wanted to do a little something as friends and family of Mary Beth's for her one year anniversary. If you are going to talk about the parish you should really get the facts straight also. By the way Marybeth loved this parish that you are disrespecting.

With the way the department is right now none of these negative comments surprise me. Basicly this party is a way to celebrate MBO and a way to give back. St. Gabes had nothing to do with it. Her parents still live there and support the school and church and they were given the option of where to donate. Mar would've wanted the donations to be given back to where she came from. This is not an exploitation. This is not St. Gabes trying to make some quick cash. This is about two girls, two POLICE OFFICERS that were in a terrible accident and one lost their fight. GEEZE why does anyone have to make a comment at all? If you want to come great, if you don't then for her family's sake keep the negative comments to yourself. Her father is a retired POLICE OFFICER and we hope he doesn't have to hear about this or God-Forbid read this. We had hope that with all that's going on in this police department people would want to come together for a fallen POLICE OFFICER and her family. Now this just gives people another reason to hate the police. We know everyone has a right to say their peace but remember, her family and her partner (P.O. Sheri Catino) that survived read this blog. Her nephew doesn't need to see this crap on here. One year ago today Mar passed away...please let her rest in peace.

For anyone that cares the people that put this together were her childhood friends...not anybody looking at jail time.

As far as the location like I said if you don't like it DON'T COME! There is always someone quick to make a negative comment about Canaryville. MBO was born and raised there...respect that. For Mar's sake let it be today. Please.

Mar, I miss you girl and I hate that such negativity is posted about a day that was picked to celebrate your life. I will be there and I plan on spending A LOT of money and I know your parents will make sure A LOT of good comes from it. RIP BUBBLES:)

At the request of Mary Beth's family, all proceeds from this fundraiser will be dontated to St. Gabriel School in Mary Beth's name. Like most Catholic schools these days, St. Gabriel is experiencing difficulties; however, this is certainly not due to the residents of Canaryville being unable to make tuition payments. I think the Catholic church as a whole is responsible for the current situation.
In addition, donations to other charities were discussed with Mary Beth's family, but since the O'Dea family has always felt a sense of pride for their parish, they felt this was the most appropriate way to remember Mary Beth on her first anniversary. As a good friend of Mary Beth's, I am sure she would not have wanted it any other way.
We hope to see you tomorrow. Kelly's is a great place to celebrate Mary Beth and all the joy she brought to our lives. She had many good times there.

O'Dea, who grew up in Canaryville, began her law enforcement career as a Cook County Sheriff's deputy. The daughter of retired officer John O'Dea.

Mary Beth O'Dea's older brother Jack, also a Chicago police officer, was killed in a 2000 auto accident on the South Side. As a family tradition she wore his star number 14427 that also belonged to her father.

"Your children are not supposed to die before you," said Commander Rottner.

This is why we donate.

We miss MBOD every day. She knew what was important in life, FAMILY, FRIENDS, and then the job. Have some respect people. If you have a problem with the fundraiser talk to your buds about it, don't trash it on the blog. You know not every thought that comes into your tiny little head needs to come out for "DISCUSSION" on this thing. It's okay to disagree, but don't tarnish what will be a bittersweet, fun memorial to our girl.
Again, have some respect, don't just trash those she left behind because we want to donate some money and then say "with all due respect" or "god rest her soul" you don't really mean it so fuck off.

We've lost the smile, the laughter, the most beautiful blue eyes. We've lost the life of the party. We've lost a genuine person, a best friend, a soul mate. We've lost a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a cousin. We've lost one of the brightest stars. We've lost a sister in blue, one that would fight with us, FOR US, til the end. We've lost Mary Beth O'Dea. There will never be another like her.

MBO was my first friend on this earth and I will never know anyone quite like her. I am embarrased to be a police officer right now. Shame on anyone that has anything negative to say about this event.

I will attend to celebrate my friend, my sister, my tree climber...someone who had more guts than half of the cops I know.
I will attend to share my memories with friends and family. I will attend to keep her spirit alive and well. I will attend because I loved her.

If it's her parents choice to donate the funds to the school and church well God Bless them. I think after losing two kids they've been through enough and it's their business where the doantions go.

Party starts at 2pm...see y'all there:)

MISS YOU MAR:)

Listen, maybe whomever posted the flyers or this info on the blog misspoke! This is not a fundraiser, it is a reason to get together and celebrate a great person, a CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER, who lost her life tragically in a car accident ( and before anyone says it she was not drunk, just real bad icy weather). The point of the money going to St Gabe's is that no one is making a profit, the money is going to ST Gabe's, in her memory. She was a CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER. That is FAMILY!!!!!!!!!! MBO was a great genuine person, who was dedicated to her FAMILY (no she wasn't married but had neices and nephews) dedicated to her PROFESSION and dedicated to her FRIENDS!!!!! She did nothing wrong, don't hurt her memory. This is a get together for her FAMILY, (her personal family and her professional family, the CPD) and friends! It's too bad that alot of you p.o.'s on this blog aren't lucky enough to call her your friend, but you are lucky enough to say that she was still part of your CPD FAMILY!!!! If you don't want to go, or give money in her memory, then don't. This flyer was an invitation to her CPD FAMILY...US! Her family, truly genuine great people, just used the wrong words if they said this was a fundraiser. Just go if you can, have a HEINEKEN for MBO, and if you don't know her ask someone tonight. They will be proud to tell you about her. Even though she is gone you will learn about her and become one of her friends!!!
AS for MBO, we love you and miss you!!! It has been a long year, and no matter what WE WILL NEVER NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!!!!

I can't believe there is all this discussion about a fundraiser. I worked for many years with Mary Beth's father John. who is an ASA investigator. The POLICE family lost both a son and a daughter(which probably none of us has done) and is having a one year anniversary fundraiser with the money going to a church. What is wrong with that. If you think it is a good cause go, if you don't, then don't attend. The choice is yours.

What about the next fundraiser going to the medical bills for her friend, Sheri Catino, or hardships she was caused by the accident. I'm sure Mary Beth would want and be ok with that

Guess CPD officers can be a--holes
There was no need for negative comments. If you can't say anything good, don't say anything, especially in this case.
You were right, sometimes when someone says what do you do or in my case what did you do, you're ashamed to say you were a CPD officer
