Police Heroes

  • Four police officers who helped rescue hostages from a downtown office building and a firefighter who rescued an 8-year-old received the city's highest awards for heroism at a City Hall ceremony today.
  • Police officers Richard Nelson and Christopher Tenton and SWAT team officers Felipe Nunez and Charles Rhein were recognized with the Carter Harrison Police Award for their actions in ending a fatal shooting and hostage situation in a downtown office building Dec. 8.
A reminder that even among the scandal, heroes do their job, day in and day out.

Congratulations Officers. (Sun Times coverage also)

The only thing that looked more foolish than the exempts at the SOS press conference was all of their bullshit awards, Mauer style. What ever happened to the theory of honest awards that you could be proud of??

CAPS Award= you attended at least one CAPS meeting the year CAPS was started, and bitched about getting stuck in a protype CAPS District the entire year.

Democratic Convention Award=you were alive and breathing the 3rd week of Aug 2006, even if you were on furlough and physically in Florida or Mexico, you got the award.

Life Saving Award=you and 20 other PO’s all fought each other to help an 80 year old out of a building when the pot on her stove caught on fire and the entire 20 PO’s were all nominated.
(OEMC calls where there is any chance of receiving a Life Saving Award has been the leading cause of preventable traffic accidents between 2001-2007).

Jewish Convention=assisted with traffic/crowd control or held an exempts clip board during a very minor gathering of Palestinian protestors. The organizers had a lot of clout for this nonsense to get this award approved.

Honorable Mention Award=you arrested 50 Felony Shoplifters in the 001st or 018th Districts.

Unit Meritorious Award=you rode the coat tails of 1 or 2 guys and everyone else in the Unit counted their activity, even the secretaries who answered telephones and drank coffee the entire year, and the entire Unit was nominated for the work of 1 or 2 officers.

Problem Solving Award=you rode around your CAPS coordinator’s residence in the district a few times and scared away the local bangers for a week. After begging the CAPS coordinator to write you a praising letter and after you receive the award, you never go near that block again.

Future Awards being considered by Research and Development:

SOS Award=you were a member of SOS between 1995 to 2007 and were never indicted or asked to testify against any other SOS officer with the promise that you would not be criminally convicted but you could still lose your job for breaking numerous Rules and Regulations. This award will take the shape of Finnegan’s big head.

CLINE Award=any member that kissed his ass, played volleyball with him (a few NAGIS people), cut his grass, had a neighbor who knew him through a third cousin or helped with the police memorial strictly for your own political gain and you were meritoriously promoted AND/OR placed in NAGIS or Gang Intelligence and were given a take home car to use for your personal use 24 hours a day without the department caring because you were always out meeting an informant. The award will have a red background with a McDonald’s yellow “M” in the middle.

Bud Biliken Award=you babysat 100-200 illegitimate children their mothers or grandmothers let run away the entire parade so they could utilize CPD babysitting services. This award will take the shape of a 40 ounce bottle of Steel Reserve beer and be golden in color.

CR AWARD=you received 50 CR numbers within any 5 year period. Any member receiving over 75 CR numbers within a 5 year period will wear this award with a gold leaf.

3 lazy idiots from SOS are now looking at losing their jobs and jail time just because they were too lazy to do a "licensed premise check" at the tavern on 63rd Street.

"Yeah, just say we locked 'em up outside. Those cameras don't work."

Way to go dipshits!!! Are you going to wear your black hooded sweatshirts over your uniforms in court also??

It's a shame that you two are making a comment about me anonymously(cowards), those who know me and my old partner know that we don't deserve this stuff that is rolling down hill, both of you who made those comments are no different than the idiots on the street or worse the media. Don't be so quick to judge when you don't have the whole story.I should't have to tell you this but don't believe everything you see in the news or read in the paper. There is a reason that there never was a cr # obtained or a law suit filed until now, almost 4 years later, think about it! After this is all said and done you or any other cowards who post about me anonymous will owe me a apology. So if you have a comment keep it to yourself or say it to my face. I wish my fellow brothers, sisters and the media would stop lumping us in with finigan and his crew, we never made a arrest with this man or anyone from his crew, ever! As far as snitching, I have no reason to snitch, there is nothing to snitch about..... Ask someone who knows us and see if they think we deserve this treatment and slander by the department, co workers "I never meet" and the media.
For those who know me it's ok to comment about me with your intials so I know that I have support, I can use all the support I can get in these difficult times. I shouldn't have to come on this site and defend myself, thats what friends are suppose to do!!Thanks signed : G I

Read the newspaper article. The cops must have hurt themselves pattting themselves on the back. Then read what the firefighter says. Remember when those two awards were given out to only one cop and one fireman? Remember when you just about had to get killed to get one of them? But I also remember when you would see a press conference and the exempts didn't look like some third world country general with all that shit on their chest. Shit sure has changed in 25 years.

I work in 022 & "SUPERCOPS" from other districts and units bitch about the Officers here. Now with the disbanding of SOS, I hope we get some more Officers to show us how to do the job, seeing that everyone else has all the answers. If 022, along with 008, 016, etc, had the appropriate manpower, the job would get done. The hidden units, TRU, etc are a drain on our manpower. I was unaware that TRU had that many Officers (400) & Sgt's. The department makes it sound like we couldn't do without TRU, when in fact, the department was able to get by until a couple years ago without it. Someone posted that disbanding TRU would send ONLY 4 Officers to each of the 75 watches. Ask any watch commander & I guaranteee he/she would be ecstatic to have 4 more bodies!

Sun Times had half page of SOS being disbanded and a small inset picture of awards? Couldn't it have been the other way around?

And did anyone else see Jesse Jackson on Fox this morning talking about there should be fitness centers in the housing projects? He talked himself into a trance. For once even he seemed to realize how ridiculous he sounded ("I don't see any elliptical trainers or treadmills necessary for health and fitness") but that didn't stop him from running his big mouth. First of all, I wonder how long "elliptical trainers" would last when plumbing is pulled right out of the walls. And, two, he's talking to a woman who he helped get an apt in 1973 AND SHE'S STILL THERE! Do me a favor, you want Bally's? Pay for a fucking membership like everybody else does.

The 008th Dist jams up another cops kid. The other night an off duty 003rd Dist cop gives his 19 year old son his car to run an errand. The officer had forgotten his secondary weapon in the glove compartment. A block away from the officer's home his son is pulled over. The 008th Dist. Officers search the vehicle and discover the weapon, still in its holster fully loaded. A neighbor who knows the 003rd Dist. Officer and his son, calls the 003rd Dist. Officer to inform him of his son being arrested. Upon his arrival on the scene, the 003rd Dist. Officer is informed that his son was in possession of a gun. The officer from 003 informs the 008th Dist Sgt on the scene that the gun was left in the glove compartment accidentally. To bad, so sad for the 003rd Dist. Cop and his son. The son was arrested and charged, a C.R.# was obtained and the 003rd Dist officer's vehicle was impounded. I know what you're thinking, the 003rd dist cop, and/or his son must have been beligerant, loud or out of pocket. According to an 008th Dist officer at the scene, the officer from 003 was quite cordial all things considered. There used to be a time when we looked out for one another on this job. A time when a situation like this could be handled correctly. Intent is still a key element when it comes to charging an individual. The officers on scene, including the green Sgt., ignored the 003rd Dist officer on the scene, and went forward with putting a case on an innocent person. It was rumored that the Sgt. Pushed the arrest of the innocent youth at the request of the on duty W.C. whom acted Earnestly. Thats The 008th Dist for you.

nope all wrong shots fired call over there kid was a piece of shit cop was even a bigger piece of shit 003rd dist cop got a cr# on the arresting officers. cop shouldnt have left his pistol accessible to his piece of shit gangbanging kid
-----------------------------------
The above listed response is indicative of 008th Dist Cops. Note to the 008th Dist Aryan Nation. Being young and black with braids doesn't automatically make someone a gang-banging piece of shit. Putting a case on an innocent person does however make you a piece of shit police officer. Just ask the former 008th Dist officers and bosses who got caught up in the S.O.S. debacle. Every dog ass has his day. But back to the facts, yes there was a call of shots fired, however the caller was on scene telling the 008th Dist cops that the car they had pulled over was not the one they were looking for. The Sgt on scene should have gotten a C.R. on the 003rd dist cop. That's the procedure when the police do something wrong like forget your gun in your car, or lie on a case report and put an INNOCENT person in jail. The 008th Dist; New station same fucked up cops.

DUH he was 20 years old. probably would have done this drunk or sober. is it a good idea to carry a gun when you are drinking ? not really. but, the saying, that its better to be judges by 12 than carried by six is why you should carry all the time. that gun is to protect you and yours, nothing else while off duty. call 911, that is your obligation and no more than that ! seems to me this statement came from one of our new college educated supercops.

Off topic: tonight's channel 2 news: http://cbs2chicago.com/specialreports/local_story_283220828.html
featured Jim Mullen and his disability situation. I don't think most POs understand what it's like to be on duty disability. All are awarded 75% of their current salary. Some, like Jim, are given permanent disability and will remain at 75% of whatever the current salary is. The others receive no raises until their salary is at 60% of the current salary. They then receive raises to remain at 60%. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TO LIVE ON. Disabled POs have tried for a long time to have this changed. Of course the mayor has ignored us, the city council has ignored us and, shamefully, the FOP- after many promises- has ignored us. The ideal solution would be to raise Jim to 100% and allow others on duty disability to have their pension locked in at 75%. We're not goldbrickers and we didn't ask to be in this position. We should not have to be put in a position where we have to beg.

From today's Tribune:

Starks said that part of the reorganization of the special operations unit would include sending most of its officers back to more strictly supervised assignments. It would also add about 80 officers to the Targeted Responsive Unit, a similarly organized unit run out of the department's patrol division.

-----------------------------------

Actually, TRU is under Strategic Deployment, no the Patrol Division.

Like we need 80 more anyhow, put them back in the districts where we run on skeleton crews every day and every night!!

So, just over a week ago, STARKS calls SOS and asks for the racial makeup of the SWAT team. Why Starks, why the race card. SOS gets disbanded yet 6 black Sgt's remain and 30 personnel (all black) remain. At the same time 16 SWAT officers get launched for having 9 CR#'s in a 5 year period. Why the odd # Dana ? Was there somebody with 10 you are trying to protect, or someone with 9 you are trying to bone. And having asked for the racial makeup, how is it that all but one of the SWAT officers that were launched are white. Me thinks you need to change the batteries in your speak and spell and use it to fill out your retirement papers !

Keep the lawsuits coming! Who is behind this one? Shitbird Ekls or Andy Dick? May they both rot.

-----------------------------------

The owner of a Southwest Side bar raided in 2004 by officers of the police Special Operations Section filed a lawsuit Wednesday accusing city and police officials of engaging in a "racketeering enterprise" that allowed rogue cops to terrorize and harass people for several years without fear of discipline.

Filed one day after interim police Supt. Dana Starks disbanded the unit, which was mired in a deepening corruption scandal, the owner of Caballo's bar, Barbara Heidegger, filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking more than $5 million in damages for violation of civil rights that allegedly took place during the March 2004 raid.

Video of the raid—led by indicted Officer Jerome Finnigan—appears to have been the last straw in a heap of allegations against the elite unit.

Two men who were arrested in the raid are preparing a separate suit, said Christopher Smith, a lawyer for Heidegger and the two men.

How typical of an ignorant, racist prick you are to even suggest that color was a deciding factor. No Aryian nation here my friend, just good cops who hate the criminal..............no matter what color, race or position. How sad, and to think you are a cop too........even more sad. Stay angry my friend and keep blaming everyone else for their misfortunes. Look in the mirror pal because YOU are the one who is a piece of shit copper. Sincerely, an 008th district cop.

Sad situation in 008....arresting a cop's kid who knew nothing about Dad's poor decision to leave his snub & badge in his glove box.
Now a teenager with no criminal history has a record, albeit a misdemeanor one...good thing the ASA didn't like what went down either, declining to approve felony charges.
And what's this crap about Starks "keeping 30 black officers in SWAT" but dumping others? SWAT doesn't even HAVE 30 black officers
between the two teams.
Quit trying to paint Starks into a black/white corner. I wonder if any WHITE boss would want to stand in front of the cameras and face the music for the WHITE SOS guys.
Any wonder why the Mayor didn't want to bring in a new Supt. yet?

Unbelievable! Exempte are tretaed like gods and now they receive awards for what? The most phone calls? Most clout? They receive everything for free and numerous perks. Starks is commanding that all white officers resign effective immediately and report to Fenger High School.

Bring your helmet, badge, and gun so they can be distributed to the senior class studying for their GED's.

The first 15 officers to respond will get to stay for an additional two months to teach the new CPD how the computers work.

Stay safe.

The ideal solution would be to raise Jim to 100% and

1. Why does he deserve 100% over anyone else? Plus, it isn't like he is the only bread winner for his family, his wife works on the department and gets a paycheck of a full time officer... I don't get this?
2. can the pension fund afford it? I would like to actually get a pension that I have paid into for 30 years... I don't begrudge him what he is getting, but I just don't see the logic in this statement AT ALL.
3. Once you fall to 60% of the present salary, do you get raises?
Do you get the COLA once you actually retire after reaching the retirement age? Perhaps some of these cases should be looked at, but I don't see why you can't live on 75% of your salary TAX FREE, they take more than 25% out of our paychecks now... please explain...

It's quite simple my dear boy. Here's a list of some of the qualifications.

1) Must be able to drink Ex-super Cline's weight in alcohol.
2) Must be able to toss Johnnycakes McNichol's at least 10 feet in the air.
3) Must own a mexican wrestler mask
4) Must at least one time, 19p an armed robbery before a Seargent or some other lame-o supervisor comes along and turns it into the Luftanza heist
5) Must be willing to play Dungeons and Dragons with M. Seiser at his crib
6) Must spend the night in Danny Young's basement watching the movie "Caligula" with Clay Walker.

and finally....

7) Must be able to get drunk with K. Gibbons and be able to wrestle him for five minutes in the ball pit at ChuckieCheese without him breaking any of your limbs.

If you are able to accomplish these feats, then you too, can be a member!

There are 412 on disability. 263 on duty disability,59 on ordinary disability,69 on occupational heart disability and 21 on total permanent disability. Only the total permanent are guaranteed 75%and occupational get 65%.Ordinary get 50% for max of 5 years plus pay their own healthcare. After 5 years they are off disability. The duty disability is by the extent of the disability from 50 to 75%.Duty and occupational go 10 years before they get a raise. It is 50% of the present salary not 60% after 10 years. Now during those 10 years the duty and occupational never get a dime of an increase not even a cost of living raise not to mention the city by contract should pay all persription costs for these officers but never has and never will pay a cent. The problem isn't living on 75 or 65% of your salary THE PROBLEM IS GOING 10 YEARS WITHOUT ANY KIND OF RAISE NOT EVEN COLA. Still sound so good to you? When was the last time you went 10 years without a raise while living in this shithole listening to the County and the Mayor raise some kind of tax every year? Put it this way if you even have 10 years on the job would you like living on what you made 10 years ago? Better yet could you live on what you made then????? On a side note some on total and permanent get treated better than others. Some get exempt rank status then75% of that. Some might have a van owned and maintained by the City of Chicago. Just like all else concerning the job and this City nothing is ever done fair or equal.

Good questions. I didn't mean just Jim, but all POs who are totally incapacitated. Believe me even 100% dosen't compensate that guy for what he's been through. His wife had to leave the Department in order to be his full time care giver. All of us paid into the pension fund, including those of us on duty disability. The pension fund receives money from the city to pay for duty disabled officers. Your pension is gauranteed by the Illinois Constitution. It will definately be there when you retire.
Once a duty disable officer's salary declines to 60% it maintains that level. That 25% is taken from your check is not relevent because duty disabled officers are paid 40% less than you. We get no duty availability, no uniform allowance, no overtime, no sell back of days, no holiday pay, no special employment, no side gigs and no promotions. Don't worry, none of us are making more money than you.
It's unfortunate that most POs will not be able to empathize with us unless you become one of us. It's not a good life and I hope that none of you ever end up here. Raises for disabled POs will not come out of your pocket. Stay safe,
