Who You Going to Believe?

The race organizers or your goddamn lying eyes? This ass covering is amazing. You've got the race organizers claiming everything was all fine and dandy:
  • Channel 2 - Marathon organizers say they're reviewing all aspects of Sunday's operation and their response to the unseasonably hot and humid conditions. But they defended their decision to begin the race, as well as their decision to call it off[...].

"I think it could have been a lot worse," executive race director Carey Pinkowski said. "If we would have allowed 12,000-15,000 people to be out in those conditions for another four or five hours, I think we would have had our hands full."
  • Channel 7 - Marathon executives say they were surprised by the use of water for cooling rather than consumption, even though runners often pour water on themselves as a cooling-off technique. Organizers said volunteers could not keep up with the runners' demand for water. ABC7 Chicago's cameras caught some volunteers going to nearby residents to get water jugs filled.
Then you have the race participants:
  • Tribune - All along the 26.2 miles of the Chicago Marathon, similar scenes played out as spectators offered water jugs, lawn sprinklers and garden hoses for hot, thirsty runners. In some spots along the route, open fire hydrants let loose vast plumes of water that cascaded down hot necks and shoulders.
  • Channel 2 again - Out on the course Sunday, runners themselves were asking the same question again and again: "where's the water?" In some cases, aid stations had run dry.
  • Channel 7 again - [Brian] Mabee said he ran by one depleted aid station after another. Finally, after nine miles without a drink, he waded into a public fountain on the city's North Side to cool off.
But the race organizers say they had water on hand, so it must be true. Evidently, they got their training for prevarication at City Hall.

Were was Mayor DUmb DUMB today. No sound bites no where to be found.

The minute he is active he will blame some one.

This is the best thing that ever happenend hopefully we will never get the olympics now.

Would the mayor ever consider hiring specialists from "outside the city" to run major departments like the police, fire, OEMC????

The answer is NO...and the results are friends of politicians rising thru the ranks and taking jobs over their heads. There is no professionalism in this city and the rest of the country is laughing at ever aspect of our city government.

To keep responding that the city looks great with all of the new construction so everything must be fine is childish. The only way everyone will truly realize how ill prepared for a disaster we are is when one finally hits.

Wake up and demand better leadership, not just a pretty skyline!

Thank God, crisis averted then. Let's just forget the whole thing. I heard that LaSalle Bank is giving away a $25 debit card to any marathon participant who was hospitalized for more than 10 days.
This quote should say that, "We couldn't call of the race because then people would demand their entrace fees back so we let them run hoping that the heat would fry their brains." Just for fun, everyone with a LaSalle banking account should switch to a new bank. Let's run them out of Chicago.

The biggest problem with our job is there is not any leadership at the Sgt. level, fat Phil promoted cronies (or was it Cronins), LAPA and the African American Police Assoc. did the same.

The answers to the test were given to a bunch of CHINLESS nonleaders, and the capable leaders are left to be patrolmen or women.

If anybody has information about how the answers were given out to the last promotional exam please speak. Enough is enough.

It was hot and humid. If you were dumb enough to run- too cheap to lose the 125.00 you paid- you deserve whatever happens to you. The race should have been postponed. There is no excuse for people to run that distance in the heat and humidity.

The City is not at fault here, and contrary to some idiodic opinions that this was a mass critical situation or equating it to a mass disaster are just the usual bashers.

The only ones responsible are the organizers and the runners.

There is a way to prevent this in the future. NO MORE MARATHINS IN CHICAGO. Then maybe the citizens can exercise their conswtitutional right to go where they want when they want.

I worked that marathon off duty 2 years ago on a normal cool October morning and "they" were expecting deaths on that day. After an hour that f*k'n main medical tent looked like a Civil War field hospital. The only thing that was missing was the piles of limbs!

Let the organizers, media, and city spin this as much as they want. You runners know what the real story is. As a past participant, what really is a shame is how the winners, male, female and wheelchair participants are being overlooked as well as all the runners who dedicated their time to training for this fiasco. All of you made the commitment months and years ago to embrace a healthy life style. Maybe that's the problem, you have to be scum of the earth in this town to be treated well. My advice, forget this race in the future. Enter a race in a smaller venue where you have competent individuals organizing it,are concerned for your welfare, and have the resources(WATER)to make it all worthwhile and safe. Other cities and organizations must be laughing their asses off at this mess and rightfully so.

Relax Sgt, First of all as with any job you'll have people question their bosses at some point in time. I have also been on this job a long time and have seen patrolman who bitch and complain about supervisors and their quirky rules and then as soon as they make sgt. its a different story. I think you may have forgotten where you came from.I've also seen supervisors and patrolman get into it and the next day the copper is gone and I've also seen The supervisor dumped it depended on who had the better chinaman. A word to the wise its a different world we are in now with the union and with people so quick to sue and (no pun intended) make a federal case out of things. This is not the old police department in many, many ways, just as it is a different world now. So, you, like the patrolman in a beat car or anyone else in todays society, must adjust or if you are feeling froggy dump them it won't be the first time and it won't be the last. Also, if its 90 degrees outside don't go on a 25 mile run you may die...consider yourself warned.

Having done several long distance races over the years, the one thing I have learned is to never count on the race or organizers to have what you need. Especially if you are going to be in the last 1/4% of participants along the race course. No matter how big or small the race, items always run out.

You need to bring your own water, gels, gatorade, etc, with you. There are numerous types of race belts, fanny packs, camelbacks, and so forth available for you to carry the fluids you need. If you used something like this during your training, use it for the race.

Weather reports as early as Wed. stated it was going to be a hot one. One report on the Sat. morning news specifically mentioned "expect the same conditions we are seeing right now for tomorrows marathon." This was at 8:45 am and it was 82 degrees out. Preparation and preparedness are a 2 way street here. Race organizers along with participants need to shoulder the consequences of their actions.

Hey sgt its me again...I forgot to mention If you are not our mom or dad don't talk to us as if you are. Remember this is these kids careers if they choose to be proactive they will. But they are working under far more stressful conditions then ever before. Everytime you make a mistake or a poor decision you are jumped on by those hienas(sp) in the media, and if any of the bosses above you are to ignorant to realize this too bad. Now I'm not trying to get on here and bash supervisors because I have come across a lot of good ones and I do believe that, career wise, its important to handle even the b.s. jobs the best you can, but as far as creating your own mess its really not worth it. So if this is about just doing the jobs you are supposed to I back you 100%, If it is about being proactive well then I'm sorry but its not up to you. Reward the workers.

We should remember that the first Marathon runner in ancient Greece died. He reached Athens, cried out, "Nike!" and fell over dead. Nike being the goddess of victory, not the shoes.

To the Sgt that demands respect.

Get over youself. You probably treat your wife and kids like ppo's.
Stripes and bars don't automatically get you respect. You earn it through good leadership. Your obviously a horse shit Sgt. The P.O. doesn't work for you, you work for him and we all work for the people.
Maybe you don't get respect because your an incompetent supervisor. Plus how can you respect a flawed system of promotions. Just because you see and speak out about a corupt system doesn't make you whinner. If that were the case we wouldn't have our present union. Yes, it needs work, but just imagine if we didn't have it.
There are plenty of good bosses.
They are the ones that lead by example. They are the ones that don't have this air that they are better then the "lowly" P.O. WE HAVE ALL SEEN THIS KIND OF BOSS. Walking around like fucking General Patton. Looking down on the patrolman.
You got to love it. Fucking civil servants who act like a bunch of aristocratics.

I have to be honest SCC. I don't give a damn about the marathon and I'd rather read something else on the post. But I will comment: The human body is not built to run 26.2 miles. If you put yourself in harm's way then don't be surprised if you end up dead or hospitalized. Further, at some point, the runner needs to be held personally accountable. If its too hot...stop running! I'm actually siding with the marathon officials on this one. We do not need an investigation or any further coverage of this nonsence. By the way, it's unfortunate that someone died. It's doubly sad become the man was a police officer. But there have been persons dropping dead throughout the history of the Chicago Marathon. The news is using this death for ratings. What a surprise.

It seems that everyone with ten minutes on the job wants to be a boss and if they can't they have a fuck you attitude towards any white shirt.

Who really cares how someone got promoted. When I came on the job and for some years after, if you wanted a guarantee to get made you paid the Alderman- 5000.00 was the going rate. You passed the test and were promoted.

If you hair gel. steroid, hero wannabes think this is bad, go work in private industry. It is much worse. Oh, and forget about complaining- they do not tolerate it.

If you want to run the Department, study for the tests and get hooked up. Otherwise, obey the orders, document the orders you were given to CYA, and stop whining, and crying, and bitching, and moaning.

Oh, and to all you so called know it alls who keep saying you do nothing or advise others to do nothing- DO NOT UTTER ONE FUCKING COMPLAINT WHEN I COME TO YOUR HOUSE FOR SERVICE AND DO NOTHING.

Some people were'nt meant to lead or be "BOSSES". More than likely they were borned naturally as "ASSHOLES" They became bosses strictly for the pay raise not knowing what was in stored for them.

The Chicago Marathon is one of the top special event revenue producers for the City of Chicago. I believe only hardware show and Auto show generate greater revenue via McCormick Place. Hotels, restaurants, Michigan Ave all are packed during these events. Having said that the Marathon at 45K is too big. A 1/4 of particants don't run and just want to make it. There is no room to run and it takes a 1/2 hr just to make it to the starting line.

Make the Marathon a qualifying a event.

You better respect your sergeants or find a new distrct. To all you out there who keep bitching about your sergeants you need to get in line or find a new job. P.O.'s are supposed to follow the orders given by your boss or you can face disciplinary action! We are not your mom or dad and we are not going to baby you and beg you into doing some work. You signed a contract and took an oath for serve and protect, so start doing it and quit asking questions. I have been on this job a long time and in the past if you questioned your sergeant then you got bitched at or dumped or both. "CHAIN OF COMMAND" remember this because it seems a lot of you forgot what it means. Number one rule is shit rolls down hill and if we get shit from our Lt. then you bet your sweet ass you are getting a shitstorm from us. That is the way its always been and if it ain't broke don't fix it. Respect your boss because he is your fucking boss!!!! period end of story!

Just because you are a Sgt. that don’t make you a boss, I think you should read the thread regarding the difference between bosses and supervisors maybe you will learn something.

They did have plenty of water-they just were too inept to get it to where the runners needed it.

Hey 12:27

I think its safe to say we don't agree with you. For future thought there have been sgts and other supv. I had the up most respect for and do any police work for Gerwig,Snarskis, to name a few and there are more, that is because they treat/treated coppers with respect and had you laughing your ass off so much you forgot you were working...Maybe you should try a different approach next time.

Bank of America is LaSalle, has been for a few months. They haven't made the "official" media changes, ie. signs, etc.
Hoepfully, Bank of America will drop this marathon nonsense. Every year someone dies as a result. Granted these "runners" think they are "fit" and sign the waivers, get medical clearance, etc., but the average body can't run 26 miles w/out doing some harm to it. Leave these marathons to the amateur "pros" who train every f-in day for organized games, such as the Olympics. However, I doubt it will stop because of the revenue$$ it brings to the city. Besides, doesn't the city treasurer have a MAJOR account w/ LaSalle? hhhmmmmmm

Get over yourself. You are a sgt. because of clout or you passed 1 test. That does not make you a boss. I will respect you when you deserve respect. So in other words, I cant see the day when I will have respect for 98% of the white shirts on this job.

Second: 30+ years on the job what are you fucking retarded get a life and leave your inside job or 1st Dist foot post and retire already. Any copper with that kind of time on the job comes to an anonymous blog and reads that shit and believes that was a real Sgt who wrote it should be in a fucking blue shirt for 30+ years. Retire already asshole and make room for a young guy who needs the job and benefits.

My take on the LaSalle / Bank of America Marathon is that some soon to be former employees in logistics said fuck it because they've got a taste of the Bank of America's it's-our-way-or-no-way mentality.

Another mega-merger that only stifles competition and benefits, politicians, lawyers and big business while sticking it to the consumer of modest means.

If Daley, Durbin and Obama gave a fuck about there constiuents and the soon to be un-employed LaSalle Bank employees they would outlaw credit card interest rates and late fees that rival mob vigorish and they would set by law the credit card payment date as the postage date.

But that will never happen because the bank has the politician in there pocket.

Wake up people learn what your grandparents learned the hard way -- real wealth is knowing what you fucking don't need.

Make these over paid fucks have a serious cash flow problem when the people refuse to be fleeced buying overpriced goods and services. That'll bring back value to the consumer real quick.

Respectfully,
DW

I call BULLSHIT.

20 years in the servie, even if you went in at 17, that puts you at 37 coming out.

30 years on this job...at 37, when you came out of the service and got on, that puts you at 67.

Nope, I call BULLSHIT.

Unless your one of those BS types who was in the reserves and acts like you were in the service - so which is it?

Are you some BS service story teller?
Or, are you a bullshitter?

OK kiddies let me clarify my post.
20 years military=4 years active USMC 1963-67 and "YES" I was THERE
Came on the job in 75 off of the old 1500 CLUB,(who remembers that?)
Went into the ILANG in 80 cause I liked to fly and the money was better than working CHA on my day off for straight time, and I flew all over the world on my days off (As a Crewman)best part time job I ever had.Ret'd in 96.16years gaurd time and 4 in the Corps equal 20,you still with me? Now I get a pretty decent pension since I turned 60 (I'm 61 now).Spent 25 years pushing a beat car in a westside district and got promoted to a unit on one of the last legit tests this Dept ever gave and stayed on for the money, then got promoted again within the unit and have to stay on 1 more year to lock in the pay grade that I'm in now, still with me? My job takes me all over the city into every district and unit where I can see todays "NEW SGTS" and above in action, and I pity the people who have to work for some of them, because of their lack of leadership and people skills,That was the point I was trying to make to the asshole sgt who wrote that post.I've wanted off this job so bad I could taste it,but there's no way I'm giving up the money this city will owe me,I'll be able to live quiet comfortably in another county this time next year and in my humble opinion I'm getting what I'm owed for all the years of bullshit I put up with,as most of you are doing now.And one last thing about being old,I get to work the airport whenever I want it.Life is good!
Stay safe out there and back each other up.
