DISASTER!!!!

Marathon called off at 13 miles. They ran out of water, Gatorade, and ambulances. An unmitigated disaster. Links to follow eventually.

UPDATE: Fire Department opening hydrants to cool runners. Squad cars being utilized to transport the ill. If you wanted to know what a terrorist attack would look like in Chicago, this is a prime demonstration of how unprepared this city is.

UPDATE: Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7, Sun Times, Tribune coverage

If this was a CPD event, the papers would read "Police Kill One, Hospitalize 300" We certainly hope the headlines tomorrow read "LaSalle Murders Runner, 300 Wounded."

And the Olympics are coming here? Give me a break! Weather is always an unknown factor, ghetto rats shooting up the place and lack of emergency equipment even to handle a marathon.

This just set us back from 4th place to NOT EVEN ON THE LIST for the Olympics.

DATELINE CHICAGO -- Four youths were hospitalized with stab wounds and three people were in custody Friday night after a melee involving as many as 40 people in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

Relatives identified the four wounded juveniles as Christian King, 12; her brother Theron Johnson, 15; Cortez Reynolds, 16, and his brother Darrius Reynolds, 12. The four friends were on one side of the dispute, relatives and friends said.

Police said one remained in serious condition late Friday, while the other three were in "stable" condition.

After the melee, blood was left splattered all over sidewalks on the block. Family members said an adult woman stabbed the youths during an ongoing dispute between several families and others that boiled over outside homes in the 1000 block of West Marquette Road.

If the City can't have enough water on hand for a pre-planned event, what makes anybody think we are going to handle a major terrorist incident that can happen in a blink of the eye. But I am sure the mumbling, stuttering, can't put a sentence together Mayor will come up with something to say on the TV news.

THIS MAKES THE WHOLE CITY LOOK LIKE FOOLS!

you have got to be kidding me!!! and this dump of a city wants to have the olympics?? i understand that it's hot out there. but running out of water, etc. is completely unacceptable. running out of ambulances on the other hand is no big surprise. just check out the daily abuses of 911 calls. ambulance runs for "taxpayers" with stubbed toes at high noon after drunkenly walking into the employment office who "needs a ride to county" happen more than you can imagine. ok i know the employment office thing was a little far fetched. hope your local ambulance is close when you have an emergency. most likely it's shipped out somewhere in shitsville to handle NON-EMERGENCY bullshit. hopefully chicago falls farther and farther down the list of olympic hopeful cities. just wait til chicago gets bounced off the list---watch and see how all the regentrification comes to a screeching halt! you heard it here. then will come the big apology from city hall--'sorry we tore down all the projects to make huge real estate profits for all my friends and fucked up all the surrounding suburbs! our bad!' my kind of town--shitcago. and for those of you living here that aren't from here: as in smallville, podunk, or whitepicketfenceville, GET A CLUE!

Disaster is Chicago's middle name, nothing new.

The marathon was cut short, big deal. In the last 4 days about a dozen Chicago citizens were whacked and another three dozen shot up and lived. Many due to the Mayor dropping all the CHA project people in different neighborhoods so his buddys and family can make millions off redeveloping the land the projects once stood on. But the short marathon will be a bigger news story than sll these people killed and shot up.

Funny thing is that Daley's old man built these projects to keep the "rip raff" in one area and now his son and his buddies are raking in MILLION$$$$$$$$$ by dumping the crap that lived there next to good hard working people.

Let me try to understand this. The drunk brother man peeing in the alley is A.N.O.V. by the hair gel TRU kids but downtown runners are pissing and shiiting in public and the City wants to sponser such a thing? Am I missing something? And I bet you 100 bucks, if you check the records, the City paid for 500,000 bottles of water from some connected water firm but only had 100,000 bottles of water on hand.

Sounds liek the Feds should charge these guys not only for theft but for any person(s) that ended up dying or sick from the lack of water on hand for a known event.

As usual we are the joke of the international news. Any chance we just moved up on the Oylmpic list?

Public Notice:

Will all coppers who took cases of water home last night from the street side supply, please return these cases ASAP. Our poor marathon runners are vomiting, pooping and peeing all over our downtown streets in search for some refreshing cool clean water. Also glad to see that the City had about 5 port-a-pottys available. Wonder if anybody from special events actually knows how to plan a large event. If Alderman Bert N. was still in office, he would of sponsored a ordinance that made the runners wear diapers just like the carriage horses.

This was worse than a disaster! People were dropping left and right. On my way home from working the marathon I heard on the radio that over 250 runners were sent to area hospitals... a number sure to climb. The radio was full of non-stop calls of emergencies... coppers and the dipatcher fighting to get air time and cutting each other off on City Wide 6. It was ridiculous. The whole thing turned into a mass casualty situation. I saw ambulances from the suburbs helping in the chaos.

Chicago is NOT prepared for any terrorist attack folks. This was bad.

Due to the millions it is costing to have this marathon, the police will only get a .0000000000000001% raise over the next four years.

it was truly unbelievable. cw-6 was overloaded with traffic as p/o's called in persons down stepping all over each other.
at one point the overwhelmed dispatcher told a p/o calling in an emergency "everybody has an emergency....stand by".
what if, as it became appearent that medical emergencies would dominate the event, cw-5 was staffed and designated the freq. for such calls freeing up cw-6 for operational communications. public safety and officer safety was compromised today because command staff was unable to roll with the punches and rapidly reassign resources to meet the challenge.
this city was not ready for the foot race, is nowhere near ready for the olypics and would be totally devistated by a large disaster of any origin.

There were so many calls for emergencies that you wouldn't believe it!!! They called in ambulances from other municipalities...the farthest one I saw was Mundelin!!! That's far!! You can lay the blame for the lack of water and the lack of medical personnel directly on the sponsor, LaSalle Bank. It is their responsibility for both.

The city did respond properly by calling in for help from the CTA and other fire departments.

The only thing you can blame the city for is the lack of communication. CW6 was overwhelmed. No one made the adjustment to use other frequencies. A lot of us went to CW1 on our own to get messages through.

Bad scene. LaSalle knew it was going to be hot. The city knew over 500 policemen would be using one frequency.

All, any city planner had to do was go to Sam's club or Cosco at 11am on Friday afternoon (when the weather was predicted to be in the high 80's)and buy out the cases of water, place the water in a city truck. Then upon sunday morning drop off these extra bottles to each station. That simple.

Is it that hard to think?

This marathon was poorly planned. They started running out of water at certain locations very early on. There were ambulances from Niles, Mundelin, Rosemont, Elk Grove Village that had to come and help out. People were collapsing on the street & we couldn't get through on the radio to get ambulances because they were babbling about other things. There should be one zone for traffic and one zone for emergencies. There should have been a water table, misting tent & medic every other block. One person collapsed and a p.o ran a block to get to a medic & then had to run back a block and the ambulance still wasn't there. While the ambulance was there, another person fell out. Not enough PO's to watch the runners in case they collapsed. They had 2 on every corner but nobody down the rest of the block. Street barricades were removed by Streets & San too early and then they had to be re-closed for clean up.
The fire truck came with the misting fan AFTER they had already canceled the race. The Olympics will never come here. This marathon was a disaster. If there's a terrorist attack, pack your shit & head home because we're F*ed!!!!!

If the is pissed off it will be interesting to see who gets blamed. Lets see... It cant be the police since they are under direct control of the Aldermens and Reverends (based on past events)However the mayor can't fire them. The office of Emergency Management and Communications would probably be a logical first stop for blame game since that sounds like pretty much all their job is. (Like FEMA) Well thats what happens when you put political hacks in jobs.

By the way who gets the water bill since I have a water meter and they happen to be turning on hydrants all over the place for this.

I say the mayor Q & A goes like this tomorrow morning. "its the weather, u cant blame anyone the weather is unpredicible, no there is plenty of water, we have lake Michigan, the river, the fountain, it was all in bottles, same as always, where are their parents? Plenty of runners finished maybe they should all prepared better. We have no control on who sings up to race. We would not allow those non finishing people to sign up, I mean common we will have the oplympics here those are all good athletes who are prepared"

LaSalle Bank (soon to be Bank of America) is a heavy weight advertiser in the Tribune and Sun Times, not to mention all the local TV stations.

So don't expect them to play up Daley's folly bigtime.

What exactly is the function of the CPD in an event like todays Marathon?
1) Pedestrial & Vehicular control ie Direct traffic
2) Saftey of Citizens.

HMMMM...TMAs were directing traffic, and a less than stellar job from what I saw.

Laws that were suspended? Drinking on the public way, Public indeceincy- peeing & crapping in the alleys etc. Tomorrow back to normal activities. ANOVs to the drinkers, pissers and smokers on the CTA platforms!

What I wonder who paid for all the OT accrued by the CPD & State of Chicago? I saw lots of intellegent coppers standing out of the way of the masses of people walking around.

JUST THINK THIS EVENT WAS A "WELL PLANNED", CITY SANCTIONED SENARIO. NOW THINK FOR A SECOND IF THIS WERE A TERRORIST GROUP ON A DAY WHEN WE (POLICE AND FIRE) HAD NO WARNING. I HAVE SAID THIS SINCE MY RETURN FROM OVERSEAS, THAT THIS CITY IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING PREPARED. THE LACK OF MORALE ALONE AMONG POLICE OFFICERS IS SO LOW THAT I CANNOT EVEN SEE PO'S SHOWING UP FOR WORK IN THE EVENT OF A REAL DISASTER. LETS FACE IT NAME ME ONE POLICE OFFICER WHO WOULD NOT TAKE TIME DUE IF WE WERE HIT AND A REAL LIFE SHIT STORM HIT. WHO IS GOING TO RUN TO SAVE THE SHIT HOLES OF THIS CITY FROM PEOPLE BURNING THEIR HOMES AND LOOTING THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. THE SAME GOES FOR THE ELITE WHO LOOK DOWN ON POLICE AND FIRE FROM THEIR IVORY TOWERS. THIS DEPARTMENT HAS GONE DOWN THE TUBES! WE CANNOT BLAME THE CURRENT SUPE, HE HAS ONLY BEEN IN OFFICE 8 WEEKS AND WHEN HE WAS FIRST DEPUTY, CLINE DID ALL HE COULD TO STRIP HIM OF THAT. I AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE OLYMPIC COMMITY WATCHING! There are more gold stars in this department than ever. but where is the leadership? Why are they draining my pension fund for 6 figures, but could not direct a train down a set of railroad tracks? bosses sending groups of coppers to check on areas that were already covered, all they had to do was contact the sgt down there off the radio to find out what they need to know. no organization, no LEADERSHIP. "As the mayor of chicago, I want to assure all of the interested parties that today's cancellation of the chicago marathon was planned. We were aware of the high temperatures and foresaw the critical shortage of water, restroom facilities, and manpower to transport all of the ill participants. Just as we have yet to show anyone our super-secret evacuation plan for the city, we have kept today's pre-planned mass casualty disaster drill a secret, even from ourselves, I mean the participants and rescue personnel. We had planned for the possibility of a death occurring also, allocating each of the alderman's discretionary accounts(no, scratch that, 2 percent of the future police raise) as a guarantee against any lawsuits stemming from this pre-planned drill. In addition, I will put all of you on notice that whenever anything such as this occurs, it will be pre-planned. We will have a plan for everything. It is better to have a plan in effect instead of responding appropriately to an unforeseen situation."

I am going to beat a dead horse here, but since non police citizens have been reading this blog, it bears repeating.

Dear Mr. Citizen and/or media member (with a nose for investigating)

Please take a look at what happened today. Please pay attention to the bloggers who were working the marathon today. When the shit hit the fan, there was a breakdown in radio communications. There is an instance here where an officer was told by the dispatcher "everyone has an emergency". Do you want the affected person to be you or one of your loved ones? And please do not interpret this as a slam to the police or the dispatchers. All of us are doing the best that we can with what we have. Our communication system is a joke. In the event of a REAL disaster (terrorist attack, natural disaster) we will not be able to communicate clearly. This same type of problem was found to have happened on 9-11. Either not enough repeaters, antennas, channels or whatever. Any regular readers of this site will hear about batteries that don't last 8 hours. If an disaster strikes at 2:30 pm, and everybody has to stay in the field, I guaranfuckintee that those radios issued at the beginning of the tour will be dead in short order. To any citizens who read this site, or to any media who can still do a bit of investigative reporting, please, for the sake of everyone who lives in this city, ask some questions, make a stink. The police have complained to no avail. The higherups will not listen to us. Maybe they will listen when the citizens start asking questions.

And don't get me started about the cars and our computers

The only person who's heart beat was pacing faster then the marathon runners was Mayor Munchin Daley's! How could they not prepare in advance and have ENOUGH WATER ON HAND!!??? For pete's sake, turn on the damn news on Friday and they tell you what the weekend outlook is. Guess what folks- it's going to be in the 80's on Saturday AND Sunday, and also VERY HUMID! That is the MAIN reason there were so many ill people. Had there been enough water, and also from what I hear, enough people on hand at the water stations, then this wouldn't have happened. At least, not to this degree. The CPD and CFD are not to blame. The "Bronze"...Now that is a cool blogging name. It represents the fictional name used for the Mad Max movies of Mel Gibson. Mel played a dedicated police officer in post-civilization time. The unity of the "Bronze" was at an all time high. They were professional highwaymen. You chose a name that embodies how a REAL police dept should be....unified officers...good bosses....dedicated servants, etc.
If only the CPD could be like the "Bronze" of Mad Max.....

May God Bless the officer's family.

Very true. Most of us carried ice, water, and coolers in our squad cars, knowing how this shit can go.

By the way, 023 has a good friend in the store owner on Briar just west of Lake Shore Drive. Here we are, not from the district and he doesn't know us from Adam. He came out and made sure we had everything we needed. Good guy.

I am getting tired of all these events planned through the busiest part of our City. God forbid had the CUBS won on Saturday, there would have been a clust f--k with the Marathon and CUBS traffic!! I know the City makes money on these events but please have something like a 26 mile marathon go run down 55th and State.

This was NOT the fault of the city or the police department, it lies with the planners of the marathon, the Lassalle bank people, the police and fire department did a great job considering the circumstances. It has NEVER been this hot for a Marathon, NEVER.

Why would we want the olympics here? All it would do is attract pickpockets, robbers and other social scavengers. I think most importantly it could possibly attract a terrorist situation. I'm not knocking the mayor or the bosses on the job. We are NOT prepared for an event of this size. If we were prepared, why in the world would we want something like that here? So we could be more efficient in removing the bodies. Put the Olympics out in the Arizona desert. Why risk Chicago citizens and emergency workers. One policemans life is worth more than the prestige that a succesful olympics would bring to Chicago. Just my opinion.

Police's Fault. Bosses should have had more of the magic EVENT#'s pulled. That would have saved the day. When they have thier defbriefing meeting and all the W/C's and D/C's are at 35th ST they better pray that the have those event#s, and POD missions of the area that covered the Marathon.

The people running should take responsibility for them selfs. They knew it was gonna be 87 degrees and they run all the time so wheres the common sense. It's the same mentality blame everyone else!!!!! get a life .im surprised that they even let 45,000 people even run together. oh im sorry thats 2500.00 per person to run times 45,000 people, hummmm wheres that money!!! maybe they can give some of that to the law suits

The administers of The Chicago Marathon have never required it's runners to qualify, because the Chicago course is, for the most part, flat. The fact that it is so flat overall make it an "easy" marathon, or one in which novice marathoners can complete within the max. time allowed or less. However, a field of 45,000 runners is, in the simplest terms, an accident waiting to happen. You simply can't have a record sized field of entrants, and only provide/plan for last year's or the average year's numbers. Those responsible for staging the marathon should take an example from other big-city, large-field marathons(Boston, New York, London) and institute qualifying times. It would pare down the entrants, as well as, ensure that their fitness level would not become a burden.

And in 2006, it was 40k runners x $90 for a total of $3.6 million, so 2007 receipts increased 37.5% over '06.

A poster on the CARA (Chicago Area Runners Assoc) message boards reported earlier this year that he has dealings with LaSalle Bank in his professional life, and that "they [LaSalle Bank] are proud to say that they almost have the marathon running as a profit center".
