Steve Chapman has an interesting take on the debate of "More Cops = Less Crime."
- The Democratic theme song is "Happy Days Are Here Again," and nowhere do Democrats think that axiom applies better than in the realm of fighting crime. They recall that thanks to legislation passed in 1994, President Bill Clinton put 100,000 cops on the street, and the result was an abatement of violence. Give Democrats their way, they suggest, and we can repeat that success.
- But anyone who expects this approach to work as promised should take a closer look at what happened the last time. The 1994 bill didn't make good on its goal of adding 100,000 cops to the streets. A study commissioned by the National Institute of Justice estimated it produced a net increase of just 82,000, while allowing that it might have been as few as 69,000.
The 100,000 number turned out to be pure fiction and the studies completed afterwards showed just about zero effect on crime. The only thing the millions of dollars did was allow Clinton to run as a "Law and Order" candidate, while he and his wife committed felonies by the bushel.
In any case, the shortages we see day in and day out are beat cars not being manned, down a wagon, tact/gang short, zero rapids - in other words, no backup. Which might explain while crime may be down, assaults and batteries on the police seem to be way up.

The other problem with this was that the salaries were only guaranteed for a few years, so when the money ran out, the cities who hired cops under this fallacy got stuck with a bill they could not pay.
Clinton put 100,000 coppers on the streets?!
BWAAAHAHAHAHA!
What next? Chicago has 13,500 Police Officers!?
Oooops Sorry Dana!
o'v
Crime is down because there are no police to report it.
Disband TRU and put everyone back in the districts. We can get along without SOS and we can get along without TRU. More cops in the districts not in specialized units.
Didn't CPD put 100,000 police officers on the desk that year?
Well I hate the DEM's too but, he did add many police to the nations big cities. Rember we weer closer to the magic number of 13,500. It's a fact you can try to rationalize against it as much as you want SCC but, Clinton was good for our numbers like it or not.!!!!!!!!!!!!
The democrats? I thought bush $ chenny were republicans.
When the State Plolice has unmanned squads on the highway, most people slow down and drive better because who knows if they are unmanned or not. Same thing applies to the cameras taking pictures of speeders during construction. I think only certain types of crime are lowered due to more police presence. Like more cars will disband a bunch of kids hanging around up to no good. Crimes like assult, murder, rape, robbery, and serious crimes will happen whether there is more of a police presence or not. People who commit these crimes just figure out where the patrols are and move to areas when they are not there. The criminals just adadpt. We, CPD, must do so as well. If the belief is presence alone will do the trick then the City should pay for people to have their cars painted like CPD to bring down crime. Yeah right? Plain and simple good, aggressive police work is the only way to keep crime down. By not protecting these officers from bull**** CR #'s, loss of a job and lawsuits, you will not see that happening in our City. Illinois may be the Land of Lincoln but the City is the Land of Lawyers, Reverends and media like Mope prha.
Did Bush put more officers on the street?
Did Bush put more officers on the street?
No. Instead of raising Federal taxes in attempts to pander and buy votes, Bush put the responsibility of law enforcement exactly where it belongs. On the states and municipalities.
Next question dummy?
SCC says:
The only thing the millions of dollars did was allow Clinton to run as a "Law and Order" candidate, while he and his wife committed felonies by the bushel.
VOICE OF REASON:
Felonies by the bushel? And don't give us that crap about lying under oath about an extramarital blowjob. SCC, please tell us about all the other felonies in this "bushel." Your Republican Congress and its special prosecutors spending tens of millions of our tax dollars could not uncover even one rinky-dink felony committed by the Clintons. Are you smarter than all of them? Do you know something they don't? Enlighten us.
Come on, SCC, stop being a hater and admit that Bill was the best President in your lifetime. Admit it. You'll feel better. Plus, it's true. Peace.

He also started a war we didn't need to which has killed 3,000+ Americans and cost Billions and decimated our military resources, which have in return made our country LESS SAFE.
Next smartass response idiot???

OK,idiot, he did what that coward Clinton would not do. And what the coward Carter should have done.
If they would have done their jobs- Carter when the terrorists started threatening the US and Clinton when he had the Intelleigence about threats to be committed soon, we would niot be in this mess.
Next answer, Ididot.
Actually, he moved the money from community policing to anti-terrorism. We still get federal money but its use is more at the discretion of the municipalities. So Daley uses it for flower planters instead of Officers. And yes, planters are anti-terrorist if ones wants them to be. Furthermore, don't go into an Iraq with generic arguments, show some thought. A terrorist fighting in Irag is one less here.
Clinton the best??????? The FBI under Freeh attempted to investigate questionable money raising by Clinton and Gore but were rebuffed by Janet Reno. He also allowed the sale of more technology to China than everyone else and now he receives six figure stipends to speak to Chinese delegates, businessmen, and so on.
more cops or less, whatever, just DO Not needlessly endanger yourselves brothers and sisters of the CPD. Wait as long as necessary for backup, canine, swat; supervisors, etc; to ensure your safety. gone are the days of sticking your necks out for an unappreciative public, and political clout-baby supervisors, who will sell you down the tubes in a heartbeat to keep their clout-bought rank.
Screw more cops on the streets! how about more concealed carry authorized citizens on the street. Joe six pack doesn't have to answer to OPS, and won't lose his job if he lights up an asshole.
Come on, SCC, stop being a hater and admit that Bill was the best President in your lifetime. Admit it. You'll feel better. Plus, it's true. Peace.

The Best President of my lifetime was Ronald Reagan. He did more for this country than his Democratic predecessor. He did more for other countries than any other since. He got us out from Mr. Peanut's double digit inflation, stirred up the economy effectively, and helped dismantle the iron curtain.
Bill Clinton was a used car salesman at best. He left his mark. Most of it on Monica's dress.
Wait til next year folks. There will not be any new police officers put on the street in this city during 2008. Retirees, leave of absences, medical, IOD personnel will not be supplemented by anybody.
Daley has his head in his ass and I can't believe the aldermen are going along with that. Trim the fat from your personnel Daley, not from the citizens that live in this city.
I think that the next supt. should be of middle eastern descent.
10th District patrol, Tact, Gangs, Saturation; even Safe Summer, dicks and E.T.s...the District is FLOODED with cops and still people get killed on a regular basis. You can't stop evil intent with a cop.
i'll give ya a statistic. they aint no police on 432 or 433's beat. haven't seen a single police car in over 3 weeks. crime through the roof. bangers and burglars walk the street unchallenged.
Any stats on concealed to carry for citizens cities? Crime might appear to go down with no gun arrests but would crime itself go down?
Typical of the repuplicans, blame the previous administration. Repuplicans are unable to accept responsibility. During Bush's first term he had control of both houses and got what he wanted. Had Bush went after bin ladin like he should have we would not be in as big a mess as we are.

Wow what are you smoking? if Clinton would have taken him when Sudan wanted to hand him over instead of sitting on a runway getting a haircut we wouldn't be having this conversation...

What are you smoking? The Sudanese never once offered to hand Bin laden over to us. They offered him to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The CIA got wind of what was happening and The Clinton Adminstration tried to persaude either one of the countries to take him and then hand him over to us. Both countries rejected all ideas for a Bin Laden turnover sighting possible domestic pressure and violence. The 911 Commission had debunked this "urban legend" in their report. So once again Bin Laden was NEVER OFFERED ON A SILVER PLATTER TO THE U.S. This has been reported by and continues to be falsely reported by conservatives.
As far as placing more officrs on the street, Yes it did work. As much as people dislike Clinton alot of officers can tahnk him for their jobs like or not. Yes it's true that cities got "stuck with a bill they could not pay", but they knew the money would only last for a couple of years. This was to be offset by retirements and monies generated by the officers. Remember we generate revenue also.
