current swat personnel are already required to meet the swat and ileas standards for the last three years and are tested on handgun and physical fitness every 3 months with the test conducted by the swat Lt and or commander. the new people who are trying out are not required to do anything more than what is required by ILEAS standards but if they want to stand out they should do alot better than the minium because everyone will be ranked in order of performance. see practice up and good luck!
they were talking about expanding the swat team from 60 to 120. so take it for what its worth. they will either add 60 or 16(dumped) or both 76. depending on what starks would like to do.these people i gurantee will not be the best qualified because starks wants a racial deverse team, as being hispanic i say it should be the best qualified--enough is enough already!!!!!

If at any time they fail they are off the team. We've already proven that. The application process will fill any current openings. Proof that life has a way of working itself out- when I came on this job about ten years ago, all I wanted to do was work swat (hbt). I was so pissed that I didn't have a phone call and would not get a chance. Now, all I want to do is write a few tickets and stay out of the news. I am so glad that didn't have a phone call!!!!

I read the order that come out in regard to the SWAT tryout. I'm encouraged. If you read the order, you have to make the cut down to 25 (thats 25 out of over an expected 1000 applicants) in order to be picked for the 20% merit. I don't even think the biggest phone call in the world will be good for this because this will be one of the more scrutinized testing processes in a long time.
The best part, you are actually ranked in order of performance. You have to shoot the course of fire hitting 40 of 50 or better(ands its not that easy, especially if you don't shoot regularly). You have to pass the PT test, 40 situps and pushups might be easy, but 13:00 min mile and a half across the board is running at a good clip. You better start running!
And the interview, an FBI agent, the first impartial assessment in the history of the department! To get past the FBI agent, you better have the right answers to the questions because the phone call ain't getting past that person.
Say what you want, when you have this many disgruntled officers, someone will always chime in with a negative opinion, but this might actually put the right people in the right place. I hope so.
The guys that are on the team now may have been a part of the "old phone call unit", but they are great guys and would trust them hitting the door on any major warrant or serious incident. They are dedicated and actually care about what they do! They train hard and work hard. The old HBT (hardly been trained) they may have been a part, but this is becoming more and more legit as the days go by. SWAT is only 2 years old, any work in progress takes a few years to work out the kinks and problems. Give it a chance to develop.

Son, you are either too young or too stupid to realize that not all spots are "Merit". Until you apply for SWAT, pass all the requirements to qualify, then are not accepted, shut the fuck up!

Tell me how SWAT is a "phone call" or "clout" position? All former HBT members had to re-tryout and meet the current standards. All members maintain pistol, rifle and physical standards quarterly (most of you lazy asses wont even take the dept. physical for $250) Each officer has more dedication in their pinky toe than any of you cry babies have in your entire bodies.
This current program has been maitained as legit as it gets on the Chicago Police Department (Starks and others would like to change that though). You would be suprised to know that over 40 SWAT officers went to an FOP meeting to plead the case for the team and pressed the union to help open up the team city wide! Hmmmm...the officers themselves asking to open it up city wide???? Yeah that sounds like a bunch of clout babies trying to hold on to their spots...YOU DUMBASSES! I would like to see an entire unit anywhere on this department stick together and be as united as the SWAT team is. This department wouldnt be so fucked up if we could do that!
From those who know, the guys on the SWAT team have contiously pushed to open the team up, to make the program "legit" and to have the best people on the team, people who have earned and deserve to be there.
For those who do not have any clout, why dont stop your crying, do some police work and show your bosses that you too have earned a phone call!

I'm gonna take the test, but I feel it is going to be a joke when all said and done. I feel clout will prevail. I would love to see who fails the firearms and physical test and still makes it to SWAT. I would like to think positive and say that I might have a chance to make it based on my skills and ability, but who am I kidding; this is Chicago.
How about the 5 Sgt's that were able to have PRE-tryout, tryouts. 4 from 140 and 1 from 124? Only one passed? 2 refused to do the run? Only 1 passed the physical requirements? Was told that one only hit the target 3 times out of a 50 round course? Bet the 3 M/1's, 1 M/4, and 1 M/2 all make it. So it will be this legit for the Po's I'm sure. They have to hold "City Wide" tryouts so that the SWAT Team Members can get D2A in the next contract. We deserve it. But if it is a "phone call" unit you can't call your buddy up and hand him a 2500.00 raise can you. Just keep looking it's all an illusion. Drink the kool aid right before you tryout!

The SWAT test is one of the only legit things left on the department. Clout has nothing to do with it. You have to PASS the tests given. Clout is not gonna help you shoot better, run faster, or do more pushups.
For the person who thinks 20 people are gonna tie and clout is gonna make the difference between who makes it....You're wrong! Its practically impossible to tie because they keep exact count of everything down to the exact number of pushups, shots hit, seconds on the run. In order for anyone to tie you would need to score the same in every test, which is practically impossible.

How about how they opened up the security specialist position on the order dated 28OCT07, yea we have a chance! Dude so am I! Get out of here! Hey what seat are you in? I'm in charge of the PODS overlooking Homan Square. Wanna watch the SWAT tryouts together? I got some cocoa with the marshmellows already in the powder. Man I miss Narcotics. Where you from? You think Seiser will try out? I am pulling for him I hear he's awesome!
By the way you see that line around the block on Madison they look like day laborers out there waiting for work trying to get in here!
Listen here is the trick to this place....just answer the phone once in awhile click the channel changer thingy too to make it look like your "monitoring" the DOC or something out there. Try to not fall asleep too much in the main room we get visitors from other departments and they don't like it.
Also just nod and say Yes Sir alot and you are like gold around here. If you like it here and want to keep your seat all you have to do is "GO TO THE BATHROOM" alot then they think you have some issues so they keep ya around!
See you around the water cooler and hey don't lose your seat that line around the block is getting bigger outside .....this is a popular unit now!
Oh yeah...Watch out for the Fat LT. he'll let the bosses know you are ready to go back into circulation if you piss him off like by taking the last donut in the break room, he hates that!

The qualifications listed for this position are very tough few of us could meet them. I could not even come close. Officers should take advantage of any opportunity offered because there are so few spots available to the unconnected.In 20+ years i have been in some units and did not have to have a phone call. There are units like canine that are %100 sponsered and other units like narcotics that are only %80.You will never know unless you try.Any move out of patrol is usally a good one. Stay safe ,laugh,life's short.

Go ahead meatheads, work your ass off and try out. First you will be tested on standards that are lower than those currently required, which is how the chosed ones will get their foot in the door. Second you will be given any oral interview by on on panel of three, of which the chosen ones will already have the questions and answers, of which many of the chosen ones will score poorly anyway. Next you will be put on a well qualified list where, without a phone call, you will sit until the next SWAT test, when the whole thing starts again. But hey, at least you can tell people you're on the list! There is nothing legit in this Department so why even go through the BS to make it look like it is.

Who cares about time and I've got 18 years. Take the most qualified #1 and the most physically fit #2.
If you got clout and are a terrible shot and have superior brown-nosing skills;tell the SWAT Commander you want Danny McGuire's old spot...
I hope the guys that are on swat now leave. I don't want to be a jag or a whinner, but f- all of this! Guys, seriously think about your lives, the lives of your loved ones. Don't put your existance on this planet in the hands of _anybody's_ clout people. SWAT is not a joke. SWAT is not for racial quotas. SWAT is not about everyone feeling good about themselves. SWAT is not for Chicago-style "merit" picks. Can't you just leave it alone?? At the end of the day SWAT is about taking "that" shot, and hoping the guy next to you will also. I do not want to go to a police funeral because some boss's retarded nephew f-ed up and got one of US killed.

You're right. A unit such as that better be staffed with competent,motivated,and absolute professionals. Nepotism and cronyism should be non-existent in SWAT.
The only thing that would make it legit is doing away with the 20:% merit picks.
Let SWAT be the only unit in CPD that is exempt from the "merit" cancer, then I will start believing again. Give the guys with no juice a fair and honest chance.
As long as there are "merit" picks there will be no such thing as "elite" in this department.
