Terrible about John Herman, but there was a much worse incident in about 010 years ago in 011. The copper was called down to area 5. Stood in a line up and was picked out. It's hard to believe Herman got the shaft. The victim in the other case was a college graduate with no criminal background.

SCC just saw the 9 oclock fox news and there was a piece there where they show a p.o complaining and claiming racial profiling because he was stoped for no rason by a f/2 p.o. around 103rd/elizabeth overnught. he claims he was mistreated, cuffed and placed in back of squad car even after he i.d himself as a p.o. If this is true, thats pretty damn stupid of the f/2 p.o and of him (m/1 p.o ) for going to the news with it. He doesnt realize that we're all seen under the same light, no mater if you're white, black, mexican or anytung else.

A ranking Cook County prosecutor said Tuesday that he has suggested taking investigations of police shootings away from Chicago police and putting the often controversial incidents in the hands of specialized "shoot teams" that would be independent of the city.
Robert Milan, the office's first assistant state's attorney and a candidate seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed State's Atty. Richard Devine in the Feb. 5 primary, said he brought the idea to top police officials during discussions over how to improve shooting investigations.
"When you have your own department investigating shootings . . . you're just bringing on criticism you don't need," said Milan, a veteran prosecutor, who made his ideas public in a letter to the Tribune. "Why not have an independent body come in and look at it? It takes any allegation of a coverup out of the game."

Despite Ignorance, Too Many Still Spout Off

People for whom indignation is a way of life — and there seem to be an increasing number of such people — repeatedly have outbursts of outrage whenever the police fire a lot of shots at some criminal. People who have never fired a gun in their lives, and have never had a split second in which to make a decision that could mean life or death for themselves or others, are often nevertheless convinced that the police used excessive force.
As someone who once taught pistol shooting in the Marine Corps, it has never seemed strange to me that the police sometimes fire dozens of shots at a criminal. While an expert shooter can run up impressive scores in the safety of a pistol range, it doesn’t take much to make shots go off into the wild blue yonder in the stress of life and death shooting. Even on a pistol range, it was not uncommon to see shooters miss not only the bull’s-eye but the whole target, which was the size of a man’s torso.
Among other things, this suggests that a pistol may not be the best firearm to keep for home protection. A shotgun is far more likely to hit the target — and far less likely to have to be fired in the first place. Any intruder who hears the distinctive sound that is made when you load a shotgun is likely to decide that he would much rather be somewhere else, very quickly. Nor is he likely to return.
Getting back to shootings by the police, now — at last — there is a study introducing some facts into controversies that have thus far been largely a matter of emotions, rhetoric, ideology and politics. This study shows how often the police in New York City miss when shooting at various distances during the stress of actual confrontations with criminals. Even within a range of 6 feet or less, the police miss more often than they hit — 57% of the shots at that distance miss and 43% hit. As you might expect, there are even fewer hits at longer distances. At 75 feet, which is less than the distance from first base to second, only 7% of the shots hit. Moreover, just because a shot has hit does not mean that it is now safe to stop shooting. First of all, this is not like an arcade game, where lights go on when you hit something. Depending on where the shot hit, the policeman who is firing may have no idea whether he has hit the criminal or not. With the adrenalin pumping, the criminal himself may not be aware that he has been hit, if it is not a serious wound. Even if the policeman knows that his shot has hit the criminal, the real question is whether the hit has rendered the criminal no longer dangerous. If the bad guy is still capable of shooting back, it is no time for the cop to stop firing, because his life is still in danger. When there is more than one policeman on the scene, there is no reason for any of them to keep track of how often the others have fired. After it is all over, it may turn out that 30 or 40 shots were fired at the criminal. But so what? It is very doubtful that the criminal has been hit 30 or 40times.
Only part of the problem is that many people have no idea of the capabilities and limitations of different kinds of guns, much less how much difference it makes if the shooter is in the safety of a firing range or in the stress of a life and death battle.
What is a bigger and wider problem is that too many people feel no hesitation to go spouting off about things they know nothing about. People who have never run even a modest little business assert with great certainty and indignation that heads of multinational corporations are paid much more than they are worth. People who know nothing about medicine and nothing about economics unhesitatingly declare that pharmaceutical drugs cost too much. Maybe all this is a product of the “self-esteem” taught in our schools, instead of the academic subjects in which American children trail children from other countries.

In an effort to report "good news", and "Happy Thoughts" I humbly report on what I heard...
History was made today when a new sgt's list was posted. Yep...apparently district commanders were asked how many sgt's they were short. After they were told 1000's, downtown reportedly said,"oh heck, they all did so well, let's have one big class" and promoted everyone.
All sworn personnel were notified today to go to the dealership of their choice and choose whatever vehicle they'd like to patrol the city streets with. Yep, the citizens feel that officers should have whatever vehicle they want.
All officers were issued laptop computers earlier today. Yep, department leaders feel we should have the best equipment as well as be able to play the games Call Of Duty 4 as well as Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus" to pass the time.
All officers will be given the holidays off. Yep,...because the "turn in your guns" program was so successful, their is..yep..no more crime in Chicago! Really.. I know, hard to believe, but it's true. No one has a gun anymore. So put up the "closed for the holidays" signs and let's party...woo hooo..ok..sorry..let's go home and read Dickens to the family.
I also heard all officers in patrol will get the furlough of their choice and can extend it indefinately!! Yep, apparently the officers who work the CAPS offices and those who have been on the medical for exhaustion got together and said, "oh heck,let's give our fellow officers a break" and volunteered to work any and all watches.
Oh..and Al went home...

My kids are in college one is a Bio-Chem major you know he will come out in 1 more year already guranted a job at Walgreens in arizona, with a 130K to start plus a new company car! The other is an engineering major will be out in 2008 and has 4 offers starting at 95K plus great benefits now what did you study in school? How to party? Party on garth party on Wayne! I work at a suburban pd, and the officers with college are the ones with the least police skills. Sure, their reports look great, however when it comes to street smarts, leave it to the ones with no college. A degree does not make a good officer. Very few officers have both street and book smarts.
I have a question about the copper in 22 who is claiming he is a victim of racial profiling. The FOX report claims he had an E.T. come out and process his car. How did he do that, I'm a Sgt. and I can't get a E.T. out to process a gun. Any chance the E.T. seen on the clip is a friend, and it wasn't an OFFICIAL request. Hope someone looks into that.

Bernard Kelly is the officer that is claiming racial profiling. you can find the clip on myfoxchicago.com.....shouldn't he have asked for a supervisor first before going to the new OPS? but it's interesting since my husband was telling me that a co-worker heading home from Taylor and Western about a week ago was behind an unmarked vehicle which seemed to be looking for something or someone and was weaving back and forth between lanes all the way til Harrison when his co-worker finally beeped at the vehicle and passed them. he was pulled over, asked for his license and insurance and then asked if he was in the habit of beeping at the police. his co-workers reply was "only when they are blocking me like you did". the officer responded by calling him a son of a bitch and throwing back his license and insurance at him. why is it so hard for officers to understand that citizens are unaware of what we are doing (like driving 5 mph looking for a suspect or double parked talking to other coppers) and can only have the patience for so long before deciding to go around the blocking police vehicle? why does this then anger some officers to where they feel they need to stop that person and question their actions? when are we going to learn? shouldn't it be that you treat someone the way they are treating you? they're being a jag-off, you be a jag-off but if they're compliant, why still be a jag-off?? that i will never understand.

Although it is a shame that the PO went to the press to air even more of our dirty laundry, I can believe that this could have occurred as it is described. I know of a case many years ago where a black PO who is assigned to narcotics attempted to report his UC car stolen. He was subsequently taken to the old 20th Dist. Station and 'detained' for several hours until a Sgt. Came down there and VOUCHED for his identity, even though the officer produced his badge and photo id when asked to do so. We all know that there are times when our badges are not considered equal.

It has come out today that a Sergeant, who is the illigigtimate son of an exempt memebr has been stripped pending indcitemnt for having sex with the Happy Pony.
The Sergeant has claimed the sex was consensual, he and the Happy Pony were sex friends, and he is being harassed because he practices in inter-species sex. The National Organization for Inter-species Sexual Encounters (NOISE) is providing legal assistance and expert witnesses on the Sergeant's behalf.

I am appalled at both sides of this police on police stupidity. I understand that the on duty police would get upset at a motorist being "disrespectful" for driving around them while they are "working." However, once you find out that the motorist is a P.O. you should maybe not necessarily politely, but at least rather expeditiously let him go. I am also upset at the ODPO for going to the media with that inflammatory allegation. We have enough problems dealing with a public that does not understand us and the anti-police media. I do not have respect for any of the parties involved.

I have a nice thought...
Few years back our daughter graduated from Mother McAuley. We were lucky enough to have good weather so they could graduate outside. Of course, normal people who have a tendency to obey rules arrive early in hopes of getting seats up in front and to sit together. Lots of CPD in uniform assisting with crowd control. Well, five minutes before the ceremony is going to start some African American boyfriend walks right through the front row past the cordon rope and sets up his video camera even though there already were professionals videotaping discreetly all over the lawn.
Throughout the year, to the delight of his girlfriend, this fine young gentleman had a tendency to sit and wait for his girl with rap music blasting at levels that could shatter windows on 99th Street so I wasn't surprised to see that he was oblivious to the rules, regulations and social courtesy required for this occasion.
So now, people are looking around, rolling their eyes, looking at each other, wishing and hoping that someone in authority would do something. The principal walks to the podium and reminds people that they are to take their seats and to not block the aisles. She looks right at him but Snoop stays put. Music starts and you can see people are pissed. Just then, out of the corner of my eye I notice this grandfatherly fella (and I say grandfatherly in the loosest terms because he was really quite handsome) watching this kid too and just as the ceremony began, when everyone resigned themselves to having this mope block their view and ruin their day, this grey knight in shining armor gets up, adjusts his belt and suitcoat and with a grizzly and authoritative demeanor makes his way over to the young man, taps him on the shoulder and gives him the move along signal. Snoop Dog looks at the elderly gentlemen and turns his attention back to the stage. The man taps the silly boy on the shoulder once again, leans over and says something. Almost immediately the boy collects his equipment and retreats to the back of the lawn. I can tell you with certainty that if it wasn't such a solemn moment people would have gotten up and cheered. As it happened, grins and smiles broke out all around.
We later heard from someone that the man was a retired police officer. So, whoever that dashing Irishman was, I would like to thank him from the bottom of my heart. I'm sure I share those sentiments with other women (of all ages) in that audience. Every now and then, whenever I think of what he did, I break out into a smile and say a little prayer that he enjoys a long, long retirement.
And I'm sure that the police officers who frequent this board have people praying for them too, because they helped someone, or saved someone, or help avert a crime or solved a crime, or just because you did your job. Don't let the press get you down. That's all a phoney racket. It may not feel like it at times but the general public does trust you and appreciates that you risk your lives every day for people you don't even know.

Hey scc non cop here, but wanted to tell you it is not only the city that settles every lawsuit but a major medical corporation that has risk management tell its workers. no worries about lawsuits it never makes to court and it won't be held against you. We wont even waste your time prepping you for deposition. its not worth the effort in cook county to even defend lawsuits right or wrong. it just costs too much time and money. The judges here are so unbelievable that good law practice and what is right or wrong doesn't matter. Everyones mouth dropped in the room. I work at a suburban pd, and the officers with college are the ones with the least police skills. Sure, their reports look great, however when it comes to street smarts, leave it to the ones with no college. A degree does not make a good officer. Very few officers have both street and book smarts.

I know of a case many years ago where a black PO who is assigned to narcotics attempted to report his UC car stolen. He was subsequently taken to the old 20th Dist. Station and 'detained' for several hours until a Sgt. Came down there and VOUCHED for his identity, even though the officer produced his badge and photo id when asked to do so. We all know that there are times when our badges are not considered equal.

Can somebody let me know who works the park car 3rd watch in 23? I was in the parking lot by the golf course around 9:45pm and I hear somebody yelling over the loud speaker. I turned and saw a squad riding on the side walk and the voice was hard to understand so I thought he may need some help and I walked towards him. This guy turns in my direction and puts the spot light on me and yells "hey moron the park is closing , get back in your car or im locking you in". I try to explain to him that Im meeting my wife hear because my car car is acting up and she is bringing my tools but he yelled the same thing and then took off like a rocket and locked me in the fucking park. I called the desk and they wouldnt tell me his name so I will probably stop in 23 but I wanna know if this guy was having a bad day or is he a tool?
That guy is an absolute tool and a total jagoff. He treats the citizens like they are all criminals, yet they're just trying to enjoy the park. The on duty PO tried to help him out even after he acted like a complete asshole after they stopped him for driving like a jag. He did not ID himself as a po till cuffed which means that he must have had something to hide. Then he goes to the media. The on duty f/2 PO is a good person who does her job, works the west end of 22 on midnites (usually) and is out there watching Beverly and MT Greenwood. She was trying to help a fellow PO. Kelly has a hair up his ass about getting dumped from Intell, and thinks he is better than working in a district. Fuck you Kelly, you should be real proud of yourself. Take a look in a mirror and see what an asshole looks like.

And after all that BS, they dropped the button. But still, I just bit my tounge and walked away. This guy got taken out of the car because of the way he acted on that stop. PERIOD! That is something a po just does not do to another po. Even the sour-ass traffic coppers on LSD would have never done that. I would be surprised if this guy even anounced he was a po. Thanks a lot stroke. More bad publicity.
And I'm sure that the police officers who frequent this board have people praying for them too, because they helped someone, or saved someone, or help avert a crime or solved a crime, or just because you did your job. Don't let the press get you down. That's all a phoney racket. It may not feel like it at times but the general public does trust you and appreciates that you risk your lives every day for people you don't even know.

Didn't know B. Kelly was still on the job, haven't run into him in years but before he was kidnapped and beaten by the GD's (or someother southside gang) about 15 years ago he was a hell of a copper - aggressive, fearless and a take no prisoners kind of guy. The bangers were trying to kill him and somehow he escaped - don't remember too many of the details but I think after that it effected him mentally. I think he was hospitalized and put into detached services for a long while after that. Also something happened with his partner but I don't recall whether he was shot and killed or not. . .

In a previous post, we were told to deal with the horrible state of FTO program. Without effective FTO's, the academy is a waste of time. Return to the days when training was 12 weeks, stick, gun and star. FTO's are absolutely crucial to success of new officers. White shirts treat FTO's as a necesary evil. In other departments, FTO are held in high esteem. College is not the issue but follow up training and guidance after the academy.

I work at a suburban pd, and the officers with college are the ones with the least police skills. Sure, their reports look great, however when it comes to street smarts, leave it to the ones with no college. A degree does not make a good officer. Very few officers have both street and book smarts.
