Mope-rah Says What?
This is what passes for journalism in Chicago today. First up, we have Mope-rah on Fox, ripping on the new superintendent, claiming that he was a failure in "Philly" because the streets are running with blood and he hasn't made an impact there.
So we did a little checking around and guess what? The FBI doesn't handle local issues like guns, gangs and drugs unless it is part of some larger event. In fact, the streets of Philadelphia fall under the jurisdiction of the Philadelphia Police Department which is currently run by (wait for it....) a black man! Sylvester Johnson, a 41 year vet of the PPD. So wouldn't the blame (or credit) go to him and not the FBI? Guess who's taking over there shortly? Ramsey - another black man. Strike one Mope-rah!
Then Mope-rah says Daley went outside the process to find this new superintendent who nobody knows anything about.
So we did a little more checking around and guess what? Daley followed the city ordinances to the letter. He had the Police Board do a search, they submitted three names and Daley exercised his prerogative of turning down all three finalists and asking for more. Mope-rah is just pissed because Daley went outside of "reverend-land" and shot down their choices. And as for only finding one article on Google about Weis, she's a straight up liar on that one. Our readers have found dozens, many of which could use a little further explanation by the mayor and the Superintendent-to-be. Strike two for Mope-rah.
And finally, Mope-rah completely loses it, claiming that the only person who could bridge the gap between the minority community and police is a black police chief. The FOX anchor pretty much hands her her lunch over this issue and makes her look petty and racist - which is exactly what she is. Strike three for Mope-rah.

Of course, what Jesse means is that this "someone" wasn't run through the reverend's grist mill and made to kow-tow to the church of racial politics. This astounds Jesse. And Meeks. And Jakes. And probably "Big Hog Balls" Beavers, too, even though he isn't a reverend.
Hopeully, Grau gets the number two spot and the reverends can really start whining in earnest.

to pick the new guy (dont even know his name yet) as one of the three finalists. So he was hand picked by none other than the mayor even before the three finalists were announced. What else would u expect business as usual.

Dear Mary Mitchell:
1st off the police department's job is not to build bridges with the community, if you believe that you are stupid enough to believe CAPS actually works. The citizen needs us, more than we will ever need them (especially in minority and high crime areas).
Secondly; it doesn't matter what race is the person running the CPD. Unfortunately, the Mayor has the last say. he doesn't care about the CPD, he only cares about keeping himself out of prison. But regardless of why he picked "Jody" it doesn;t matter what race he is!
Why is it that every time some of color is not appointed a city/county position somebody always has to complain?
What happened to caring about citizens as a whole? I don't care about white/black/hispanic or whatever as long as he/she is qualified and brings the morale up in the department I will be behind him 100%.

I figured out how to view the blog on department computers. Simply subscribe to Google Reader (free) pick Second City as one of your blogs. Then you just have to log on and you can read the blog. Simple as that. You cannot read the comments, but most of them are garbage anyway.
This Department needs change and new ideas, and there is noboby in the upper ranks of this department that is capable of doing it. The current old boy network, both black, white, and hispanic has run this department into the ground, and unless you are a part of their cliques you should welcome them being broken up, which hopefully Jody Weis will do. Let a bunch of exempts retire. I hope they do. Morale is in the gutter, training is inadequate, our equipment is old and broken down, and we have been let down by much of our top leadership. It will also be nice to have a superintendent who's appearence commands respect unlike the grossly overweight Phil Cline, and the arrogant, ghetto talking Starks. We have some serious problems and Daley, though I don't care for him, can see it. Just the fact that Moprah, the make believe reverands and the rest of the Civil Rights industry doesn't like this guy is a plus in my book. As a working copper with no clout, I welcome this guy. Lets give him and his ideas a chance. If he screws up, this site will be the first to tell us.

Elwood went to some southside Catholic High School. Don't kid yourself, that guy constantly takes shots at the police. I turned off Fox before the interview because of one of little snippets. I'm sure he was in drama club in high school and got slapped around.

As a man of color, I find it deeply offensive that Ms. Mitchell and Rev. Jackson continue to absolve the black community of any responsibility for the state of our relations with the police.
Why is it that Ms. Mitchell and Rev. Jackson are so outraged over the choice of a white for Chicago Police Superintendent? It's because they find it easier to get political mileage by pointing the finger at the white man for all of the black community's problems when they should be asking themselves the hard questions.
Is it too outrageous a thought to expect people of color to conduct themselves in a civilized way towards one another and not rob, rape and kill one another? If we did, we wouldn't see the armies of police in our schools and communities. Why can't we admit that black on black lawlessness is more of a threat to black communities than anything the police can do to us?
Mope-rah will keep her job at the suntimes as long as she keeps getting publicity. Be it good or bad. She's in the news, we talk non-stop about her, and for some reason whenever I see a newspaper in a squad it is the suntimes. Why are coppers still buying it? Get your scores and news online.

Stop empowering yourselves by taking advantage of "your" people's despair, and perpetuating the myth that everything bad that happens to blacks is motivated by race. Look up the word tautological; you are an educated person. It's amazing that the powers set against blacks can't be identified, or there is a secret enemy that only you can save your people from.

Actually, SCC, even though I don't care much for the views of MM in most of her columns, I thought she presented her ideas very well on the interview you linked on this blog. Patrick Ellwood wasn't as eloquent as you stated in your blog intro. Regardless of how most of your posters feel about blacks, hispanics and the many reverends/pastors in Chicago, they are a force to be reckoned with. Weis has a lot of work to do if he hopes to build some bridges in the various communities(and he will have to if he hopes to be effective), and I hope he gets here and starts reaching out well before his 16 Jan 08 starting date.

I would hope that is true... While reading her articles the only ones I think she speaks for 99% of the time are the drug dealers hoping to take some of the pressures of the police off thier corners.

I wished that Friday was the new Superintendant's first day on the job. He could have come to the scene of the train crash at 52nd and Shields and watched an organized, compentant, compassionate and capable police dept (and Fire Dept)in action. That operation went so smoothly it was like a disaster drill.Police officers and fire fighter are still answering the call because they love what they do in spite of all the negative press. The only problems at that scene yesterday were from (you guessed it!) the media.

As a man of color, I find it deeply offensive that Ms. Mitchell and Rev. Jackson continue to absolve the black community of any responsibility for the state of our relations with the police.
Why is it that Ms. Mitchell and Rev. Jackson are so outraged over the choice of a white for Chicago Police Superintendent? It's because they find it easier to get political mileage by pointing the finger at the white man for all of the black community's problems when they should be asking themselves the hard questions.
Is it too outrageous a thought to expect people of color to conduct themselves in a civilized way towards one another and not rob, rape and kill one another? If we did, we wouldn't see the armies of police in our schools and communities. Why can't we admit that black on black lawlessness is more of a threat to black communities than anything the police can do to us?

As for why the Leprechaun King hired FBI Weis that answer is simple. With all the heat on the CPD he needed an outsider and hopefully an outsider with internal affairs experience. The big names nationally in "policing" wouldn't come here. So he picked an FBI manager. It might be a good pick. Time will tell. Personally I would have preferred Bratton or Timoney, but the Mayor ignores my wise and experienced council.
Now the simple reason there are major issues in CPD can be ascribed to one of two words: cronyism or Daley. Actually they are interchangeable.
The Mayor, besides being an excellent public speaker, is an asshole of metaphysically transcendent proportions. For those of you from Canaryville that means he sucks. The city and various other public agencies are run as a quasi criminal conspiracy to benefit the Daley family and their circle of friends.
We never got real hard edged community policing or Comstat here because Daley fears it might lessen his power. Better more murders and blood on the streets than real change. Look at what Bratton has done in LA since 2002.
It is possible to have a positive impact with the right leadership. We lack leadership at the Mayoral level. I hope Weis is able to make some needed changes.

Hey I got a good and true story for you.
When I was growing up and throughout my youngers on the dept. I was accused, as was a lot of other white officers, of having that lasve owner attitude. My response was that my people came from the British Iles and we know nothing about slaves.
It was several years later my sister received a series of letters from an older cousin who was doing a family history. I seems that one half of the reletives came here during the early 1900s while the other side has been here since, at least, the mid 1600s. Discovered were letters and sales reciepts given to other family members almost 400 years ago which transfered ownership of slaves that were given as birthday gifts. Is'nt that coincidental, I got a chuckle out of it on how wrong I was about the family history. I also lerned to keep my mouth shut.

If anyone here truly thinks that the CPD doesn't need to build and expand on bridges of communication in all of the communities in this City, then you're just part of the problem. You can hate CAPS all you want, but I've seen good people come out and keep tense shooting scenes calm, and assist in dispersing crowds of people who were bent on violence and disorder.
Don't lump all church leaders into one pulpit. There are a lot out there that haven't forgotten their calling, and their mission to truly help others, even the Police.
It's easy for a lot of us to lump "them" all together, it's easier than sifting through and seeing those who are actually our friends out there. A wise policeman told me many years ago, "hey, kid, you can always use a friend out in these streets." Truer words were never spoken. There will always be splinter groups with their own agendas, who we will never win over; so be it.
In order for this Dept. to move forward, we have to do a better job at community outreach. Does anyone remember this much stress between CPD and the public when Hillard was in charge? Neither do I.

I do not know how old you are, but the media has been reporting on black crime like it was the 4th of July celebration for decades.

Sorry to butt in on your tiff but I have a house in the White Eagle Sub-Division of Naperville and a Fair Isaac score of 750. Don't brag about Old Irving Park. It only holds its value because of the City of Chicago Residency requirement for its employees. The moment that requirement is rescinded Old Irving will become as relevant as the old Saint Leo Parish in the Gresham neighborhood or the old Englewood neigborhood.
