Tribune Smear Job
Its coming Wednesday! Slightly less than halfway down their main page in the video box, a 39 second video preview of their latest expose - "The rush to clear cops who kill." The even have an audio clip of an exchange with a cop who just fired his weapon and the dispatcher.
One problem - OPS got the transcript wrong and so does the Tribune. Listen to the video/audio closely.
The "official" typed transcript that plays along with the audio says "...he just ran so I took a shot at him." Sounds bad.
If you actually listen to the tape, the officer is yelling, "he just rammed us, I took a shot at him." A completely different meaning AND most likely, a justifiable shooting.
Further details as they become available on this bullshit.

What are the other circumstances leading up to this? Did the offender just shoot someone dead,then as the police pulled up the bad guy had gotten into a get away car and they rammed whe police car to make good their escape? We'll just have to see what the Tribune writes this Wednesday....to be continued.

Been reading you for a while now - and had to finally speak up. After reading this, going to the Tribune website & listening to it myself with my eyes closed (so I was not influenced by the transcript), I can honestly say the editor of The Tribune is a friggin' moron. I do not live in Chicago, never have. I am a firefighter from N.Carolina.
At times like this, we're all public servants, and it doesn't matte which badge we wear. Good luck with what I see as turning into a major shit storm for you guys. I hope you can get enough support to air the real truth.

The silent majority of this country, county and state are behind us. I was the reciepient(sp) of such thanks and good will today. It consisted of a "Thanks for what you do" handshake, and the M/2/Yuppie bought my coffee at Dunkin. During the wait Mr Yuppie asked what its gonna take for Jackson and All those Reverends to shut-up? and "If those people dont want the police in their neighborhoods maybe they should stop break the law or calling 911"
Profound very profound- walked away from the experience with a whole new respect for yuppie types not to mention a free coffee!
so the officer involved should sue for slander. The paper has a due diligence duty.

Officer's sex-bias case goes to court
The lawsuit centers on the allegation that Donna Lewis, a Grand Crossing tactical officer, was wrongly denied a special assignment in Washington to assist with crowd control during street demonstrations at an International Monetary Fund conference in 2002.
Lewis said her supervisor, Lt. Terence Williams, who is now the commander of the Calumet District, told her she couldn't go because she was female.

i really could care less about that story. of course the writer and the media think they know it all because they are "so familiar" with what happens during an internal investigation and they belive what these mopes on the streets tell them.
what they dont know is that the investigations take a while to complete and that every "witness" in the community does not like the police. also, these "witnesses" are not going to take the police side but the jag off gang banger who just had a gun and ran and pointed it at him. the witnesses feel it is there duty to take the side of the "black man" in the community and the police are wrong with everything they do.
just remember media... we are regular people with family and friends that have lived a normal and crime free life. we are not going to start now to just shooting people for no reason. there is a reason that one person gets shot by police every 10 days... the community is ran by gangs, guns and thugs. the crime rates that you see on paper are not what the streets are truly like. these gangs but hits out on police officers and many times on there family members. the police are not out to put anything illegal or to go out and "get the gangbangers", but i can guarantee that the gangbangers are out to get the police any chance they can get. WALK A MILE IN OUR SHOES.....

When was the last time you chased a person on foot down a dark street or a dark alley who you were told had a gun? When was the last time you patrolled the ghetto where people lie to you just to lie? When was the last time someone pointed a gun at you? When was the last time you had to literally fight for your life because the mutt you were fighting with was trying to disarm you? What was that answer? Never! No shit, but you have the audacity to do a report on Officers who go out there everyday and put their lives on the line, incredible! You are the same type of person who has no need for the police until you need them and then you expect all the service in the world.
Here is a suggestion why don’t you, any of you, take the police exam, go through the training, and then work in 011, 007, 015, 006, 003, 009 or any of the other fast districts for eighteen months? Then you can leave the job and go back to your soft life and write about us. But I bet the stories you write then will have a far different tone. But I really don’t believe you or any of your colleagues have the backbone to do such an honorable thing.

Some of you act like the Trib was legit before this. Maybe you're new on the job or you just never paid attention before. This has been going on for years. I remember about 6 years ago they did a series of stories that said it was standard practice to physically coerce confessions in the D unit. They don't care about you, me or the truth. Bylines and their agenda are all that matter.
If you believe that states attorneys are your friends read the following from the Tribune article....

I was in the gym the other day, talking to a brand new recruit who is assigned to the 1st watch in an Area 1 distirct
We were discussing a gruesome scene which she had been involved with a few days before.
Police work for her was a totally different world than her former employment situation and what she knew when she wa growing up.
People were trying to overhear us as she described the scene.

I think $300,000 salary is because he is not getting a pension. No one told me that, it just makes sense.
In regards to being paid for dual offices
Like the Supt of Police and the Chief Emergency Officer for the City of Chicago.
If I remember correctly, it is against the City's rules to hold two full time jobs with the City of Chicago. You can retired and collect a pension check and get another full time with the City but you can not hold two positions at one time.
Good NEWS! The West side reverends have agreed to a new policy for police shootings. Instead of an official round table they have agreed to a Spin The Wheel Table. Every other space is BAD SHOOT and the other spaces are GOOD SHOOT. There is also one bonus space. If the officer's spin lands on that space, the West side reverends split the 18 million dollar payout from the City of Chicago!

If you actually read the contract with the new top cop, not only is his salary stated but an annual expense account not to exceed $150,000.00 for misc personal expenses including but not limited to moving expenses, family re-location and family education. If I add this up right, that is $450,000.00 a year as we wait for a contract. That is over $8,600.00 a WEEK! Plus his FBI pension. So I place his direct income at $10,000.00 a week! God Damn, this man may even be able to afford a house in the city! Lat us also add the use of a free department vehicle and gas..... This man hit the City Lotto!

Explain to the media this.
Police, can and will shoot people in the back while running away, and its legal under many circumstances.
1. holding/possesion of a gun
2. fleeing felon, running away after commiting a felony such as murder.
3. in a car driving at you.
Mr. Media a dude just shoots at you and runs away, guess what you can shoot him dead in the back at 2 ft. Legal. A fleeing felon with a weapon to try and escape arrest.

I just love the witnesses that come out of the woodwork after a shooting. They would swear up and down (I swear for God) that they walked on the moon if it would jam up a copper when they were really high on crack in an abandoned building picking at their cheesy smelling toes with a rusty screwdriver a mile away.
These are the people that interviewed and quoted in the paper by both papers. The National Enquirer has more integrity than the trib and slime times.
Steve Mills was part of the Trib 'Dream Team' that was hand fed all of their 'investigative' research by Jean Snyder McLean of the MacArthur Center of Justice - when the Tribune had Mike Sheahan in its sights.

I graduated with a Journalism degree in 1976. At the time, everyone thought they were gonna be Woodward and Bernstein. I worked at it for about 6 years before taking the job. Here's what John Q. Public doesn't realize. First and foremost. The media, contrary to popular belief, is NOT a watchdog for the citizenry. It is a FOR PROFIT business enterprise. Each newspaper has a ratio of about 78% advertising to "news". Of the "news" portion of the paper, about 65% is "feature" material" ie, who Paris Hilton is blowing, death, cancer and divorce type material.
The electronic media isn't much different. There used to be about a 12 minute per hour cap on the amount of advertising that could air. Episodic television programs are about 21 minutes long for a half hour show, the rest is advertising.
The point is its not public service. Its business. I dont know what we can do to educate the public about the hucksterism of all this, but they believe everything in the paper as gospel. Erroneous stories cause damage that wont get mitigated by a retraction buried in the paper thats printed several days later.
The best idea I've seen regarding the papers was floated about 20 years ago by an Alderperson who wanted each and every newspaper vending box licensed and taxed like any other business in the City. I'd love to see it, especially the new RedEye newspaper boxes that have been uglying up my neighborhood lately.
Where we have to wise up is to realize that equity and fairness are words that should be taken out of the dictionary because they really dont exist, but we naively keep bullshitting ourselves into the idea that they do.

When called to the stand to testify about the confession, he could not remember things very well and was given the statement he took from the offender. Reviewing the document he penned, he still could not recall. The reason...?? This idiot could not read his own handwriting. It looked like an arthritic chicken got ink on its claws.... I think shortly thereafter he got dumped to Juvenile and left the Office. There is a reason he is not a State's Attorney anymore.

African Americans need good policing just like all other citizens. However, this is the stuff that undermines trust. It has happened so much, it will be hard to rebuild. All citizens must work on it. Racism, social class divisions, and ant-authority has all combined to make policing in black communities ungovernable.
The shame of it, there could be a "citizen" shot everyday. Most of us on this blog could think of a number of times where we could have justifiably shot an offender but didn't for one reason or another. Maybe if our esteemed leadershiop, FOP or Supt. would speak oot more. People need to understand, this isn't CSI, prints are hard to get and you can shoot someone in the back if it meets the criteria. Otherwise, let city burn.

That stupid article keeps focusing on OFFENDERS who were shot in the back. Honestly, how many s&*% heads actually take the time to attain the proper stance, feet shoulder width apart, draw their weapon, and squeeze with equal and constant pressure. I'm telling you again, I have a great deal of experience with police related shootings. You should be demanding FOP gets involved in changing the process to protect your rights. Yes, the first ones with IPR went OK, but once they get their feet wet, it will be too late. Smith is the one who pushed Callie Baird to ask for breathalzers on all off duty shootings (vetoed by command). But its coming back. Both Smith and his wife (a current or perhaps retired, supervisory special agent) are very vindicative when they don't get their way. Watch them to have some role, perhaps just advisory with the new supt. He'll believe them before anyone else. Wake up officers, not only is your livelihood at stake, so is your freedom and assets.
Just canceled my subscription to Trib., Suntimes and Southtown(Suntimes affiliated) Can we all make an impact and do the same? Let friends and family know as well. We are forced to live here for our jobs, let's be a force in showing our dipleasure with slanted reporting.
I've been at roundtables with ASA Oppenheimer who is quoted as being told not to ask questions by his superiors. Reason being that if they (ASA) ask no questions and make no comments anything said at the round table can ,yes, can be used against you in a criminal proceeding. When push comes to shove the ASA could say I didn't read the officer his criminal rights because it was an administrative proceeding that I was allowed to observe and that bs disclaimer is just that BS. Just remember the States Attorney's Office does not issue a Letter of Declination of Prosecution (in every police related shooting with hits) until weeks or months after the shooting. The letter is declination of prosecution against the involved officer(s).
Read the article today but the Trib is not allowing commentaries below the articles like they usually do. I came on 13yrs ago and we were practicing streets stops and shooting scenarios in the Academy parking lot. The article stated we just started doing this 5yrs ago. They keep mentioning we have 13000 p.o.'s out there. Hopefully they will look at this blog and find out that is not true.

Illinois law says we can shoot in those situations. City of Chicago/Use of force model says we can't. However Affirmation to the Use of Force Policy states, "officers will not unreasonably endanger themselves or another person to conform to the restrictions of this order or directive." Somtimes the situation calls for us to cross into the gray area to make sure we go home at night. So it's not as wrong, wrong, wrong, and WRONG as you believe.

I remember learning about Greylord from my dad, who was the recipient of favors from those corrupt fools, and you expect anyone to believe the cops in a town where the judges lie? You guys, on the whole, are an upstanding, hardworking bunch. But the constant defending of anyone who is a cop, whether they deserve it or not, will hurt in the long run because no one knows when you are right in saying someone is a standup guy and when you're just protecting your own. Look, accidents happen. but if these shootings are as accidental as we have been told, why is there a rush to clear the cops? Why do the rules for dealing with a civilian shooting seem so non-common sense(i.e. explaining what happened in a group instead of being isolated. You don't do that shit with suspects for obvious reasons. Why would it be different for cops? Any rational person would be suspicious of that)? You guys must realize there would be no story here if things were done fairly, so why not focus on fixing these loopholes so cops can be PROPERLY cleared, which would in turn help in community relations? No , instead everyone seems to be content to name-call and suggest retaliation. Gosh, who could ever imagine why you have the reputation you have?
