California Police Dog Killed

Officers put their lives on the line every day. Many times, we task animals to assist the police - hunting for bombs, looking for bodies, searching buildings, sniffing out dope. Occasionally, police use them to do other equally dangerous tasks like taking down non-compliant subjects. And sometimes they pay the ultimate price:
  • A man who led officers on a car chase was hospitalized yesterday after jumping from the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and taking a police dog with him. The 200-foot leap into the frigid ocean water killed the dog, authorities said.

The pursuit began Monday evening after an Oceanside police officer saw the man driving a GMC pickup erratically. The officer, accompanied by a German shepherd named Stryker, ordered the driver to stop but he refused, California Highway Patrol Officer Larry Landeros said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, led police on a chase through a section of Interstate 5 and onto the bridge, where he came to a stop. The officer released Stryker.

"The dog actually took the driver to the ground and then [the suspect] actually lifted the dog up and jumped over the side," CHiP Sgt. Steven Toth said.

In most states, killing a police canine is equivalent to killing an officer and hopefully, California is one of those states.

RIP Stryker.

LAUREL, Md. (Jan. 2) - An inmate who escaped from a hospital Wednesday, briefly taking a worker hostage and stealing two getaway cars, was cornered hours later in a cemetery by police and killed in a shootout, authorities said.

Kelvin Poke, 45, overpowered guards at Laurel Regional Hospital and fired several shots before fleeing, authorities said. Once outside, he shot out the window of a car and drove away, dumping the driver, said Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley.

How about that, cops kill him in a cemetery! How ironic!

The aldermen in Los Angeles is attempting to pass a city law that mandates that all police officers assigned to specialized units on the LAPD file a full disclosure of their finances. This includes but is not limited to outside income, spouse's income, assets in the banks, investments and liquid cash such as money in safe deposit boxes or in a safe at home.

If you google this, you will learn that the Feds reqested this as part of the deal not to Federally take over the LAPD.

Just imagine if they made the politicians do this? Would they have to declare all those cash envelopes and expensive free gifts?????

I guess police officers just don't have the same right of privacy as do the non-police citizens.

I hope everyone is aware of how important the upcoming election for state's attorney is. Look at Anita Alvarez's major accomplishments on her website. (link below) I am not defending the coppers in these cases, but why must all these candidates jump on the bandwagon and knock us to garner votes and appease the media.
Why not depend on your record of convictions, not how many cops you convicted. But that wouldn't work, because we know if you looked at the conviction rate of defendants that aren't the police, the SAO would be embarassed.
The office needs to be cleaned out. Devine is a good start, but Alvarez and Milan should go with him. Time for a fresh start.

Not to be a dick or anything, but in the very same issue of that newspaper there was an article about a "rookie" suburban copper who, when confronted by an aggressive dog, first tried to pepper spray the dog with no results and then shot the dog in the head. Fortunately, the doggie lived and I'm sure everyone was relieved. The family "is considering" litigation but I'm sure the department picked the tab to get the 4-legged wonder patched up.

I don't think anyone would contend that in the interests of public safety, police officers have the right to defend themselves (well, in Illinois.....not Iowa) from the local pet no matter how much "Fluffy" was loved by the owners and their kids. The turd who grabbed the canine and jumped off the bridge should be charged with Felony Resisting Arrest, Aggravated Destruction of a Police Animal or some such charge. Do you really want to equate an animal to the same status as a police officer? Once again, the double edged sword of elevating an animal (or tool or whatever) to human status would cut both ways. Do you want to empower the citizenry to be able to defend their pets with the use of deadly force?

I used to name all my squad cars. My 1991 bubble Caprice was known as "The Electric Lady." When the jagoffs on the other watched piled it up, I wanted them charged with aggravated SOMETHING. We did have a brief memorial service for the old girl after work.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will be shaking down this shopping mall and police dept following this story:

FAMILY OF SIX ARRESTED OVER BAGGY PANTS THAT WERE REVEALING THEIR BUTTOCKS. Palm Beach, FL
A family of six was arrested at a Florida mall last week following a melee that cops said was prompted by sagging pants, the Palm Beach Post reported Monday.

It took about 20 deputies, a canine unit and a police helicopter to apprehend the Leger family, who got involved in the fracas on Dec. 27 after Frantz Leger, 20, was arrested for trespassing at The Mall at Wellington Green, the Post reported. Leger had reportedly been banned from the mall over the summer after wearing baggy pants.
The family came to the parking lot of the mall’s food court as Florida State University business sophomore Frantz Leger was being arrested and attempted to stop it. Family members allegedly began pushing, scratching, kicking, screaming and cursing at cops, according to law enforcement records obtained by the Post.

Marthe Leger, Frantz's 50-year-old mother, allegedly pushed two deputies to keep them from arresting and Tasing her nephew, who had allegedly assaulted a deputy during the brawl, according to the arrest report obtained by the paper. She was also accused of kicking and attempting to pull away from a deputy during her arrest.
Frantz’s father Joseph, 52, threatened to kill deputies and later began to scratch and kick during his arrest, according to the Post. Frantz’s sister Samantha, 18, reportedly screamed and cursed at a surrounding crowd and attempted to push past an officer. There was no information available on a 16-year-old juvenile or Frantz Leger’s cousin Alain Odige, 19, who was charged with trespassing, the Post reported.

The Leger family contends that deputies were out of line, the Post reported.

Marthe Leger, who had a bruise on her cheek, told the Post she was punched multiple times in the face by a deputy as she tried to photograph the melee with her cell phone. Joseph Leger told the paper that he was punched in the back of the head.

I guess it is OK for the family to fight the police and try to defeat an arrest. Yes, all the police fault! Ghetto wear should be allowed and kids at the mall should be forced to see these animals buttocks. GIVE ME A BREAK!

The Los Angeles Police Commission approved a plan Thursday to require hundreds of anti-gang and narcotics officers to disclose detailed information about their personal finances, triggering an immediate court challenge by the police officers union and a debate at City Hall over whether to overrule the panel.

At issue in the rapidly intensifying dispute is what LAPD Chief William J. Bratton and the five-member commission hope will be one of the final pieces of a broad reform campaign that began after the Rampart corruption scandal and has kept the department under federal oversight since 2000.
Bratton and his civilian bosses are eager to get out of the federal consent decree, which calls for some sort of financial disclosure rule for officers in specialized units who frequently handle cash, drugs and other contraband. The issue has proved to be the most contentious sticking point as union and city officials have struggled for years to strike a compromise between officers' privacy rights and the need to satisfy the decree.

The reform is intended to help supervisors detect an officer who is taking bribes or involved in other illegal conduct. Under its terms, about 600 officers would be required to disclose to department officials any outside income, real estate, stocks, other assets and debts every two years. They would also have to reveal the size of their bank accounts and include any holdings they share with family members or business partners. Officers already assigned to the units would be granted a two-year grace period before having to complete the records

My first thought on this is that way would a liberal state like California find that this man acted as if he was intending to harm an "officer".

I then thought that "animal rights" may trump "police state" theories and maybe this guy would have the weight of the law come down on him.

Either way, it is a bad situation. RIP Stryker!

Sure we fill out an ethics statement, but not to this extent. Why should it be anyone's business whether you have a safe deposit box or a safe at home? Next they'll want to know waht's in them.

Why should they be allowed to know what your spouse makes, as long as it wasn't through some city office.

It's none of anyone's business what I have, and where it is, as long as I didn't get it through dealings with the city.

It's just another attempt by the government to get their hands on something that doesn't belong to them.

Announcing the 25 year sentence, Judge Guzman said the evidence showed "(Jones) was clearly the leader and driving force behind this criminal conspiracy. He abused his authority. He distributed lethal poison on the streets and did it repeatedly." Guzman added: "The damage goes far beyond individual drug dealers. By his conduct he damaged entire neighborhoods."

Next up was former officer Darak Haynes, who also pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 19 years, even though the evidence suggested the 10-year veteran profited only $500 from his role in the conspiracy.

A third convicted former officer, Eural Black, was sentenced to 40 years late Thursday afternoon. Black was convicted after a trial. That means that he did not plead guilty in this case. And as a result of that, he actually got a longer sentence than the alleged ring leader in this case, Broderick Jones.

A fourth officer, Corey Flagg, will be sentenced Friday. Flagg actually became a government witness during the investigation, meaning he is likely to receive a lesser sentence than the others.

Then there was the early-mid 70's Dodge Monaco. Huge mothers, made from a melted down Sherman tank, no air conditioning, vynal bench seats and the turning radius of a battleship. But it had a big cube engine and would haul ass, especially when the air cleaner cover upside down and no restrictive chase policy. Watch the original movie The Blues Brothers and see them all racked up, it was beautiful.

Oceanside to Coronado is about 60 miles. In California and many states they'll chase you to the end of the world till they catch you. That's what it's all about, letting know these motherfuckers that they're not getting away with shit. In Chicago they would've terminated just cause it was traffic....well no shit! That's how you get probable cause to stop them. Who is to say the shithead didn't have a dead body in the trunk, kidnapped someone or just commited a murder somewhere else. No balls in this fucking city. And if you're worried about getting sued then find another career, you're a fool to think that's not going to happen. It comes with the job. R.I.P. Stryker

The ringleader of a group of South Side police officers convicted of shaking down drug dealers was sentenced today to 25 years in prison.

Broderick Jones had pleaded for mercy before being sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman, saying he was a father and a Navy veteran who served in Desert Storm.

Guzman could have given Jones life imprisonment, but he said 25 years was long enough to deter other police officers who might be tempted by greed.

more fun in Lt's school...
I am the greatest dan sobczyck came in and told us how great HIS fusion center is and how HE has single handedly saved dozens of gangbangers from being killed by other gangbangers. also how doing a contact card on the head gangbanger in the level 1 doc is more important than getting a gun off a 60 yr old man in a no crime area(such as west end of 8/22/16). of course never taking into account that the 60 yr old man if not a career criminal could be burglarized, robbed, and his gun taken and used against a police officer.. never seen a contact card cause anything but carpel tunnel for the tru maniacs.
d/c chasen came in and said let ipra do what they want, in police shootings, to hell with the criminal investigation. to his credit it wasnt his choice and he was just following the city ordinance. but of course instead of trying to fix the problem they are just waiting for the new guy to make his changes , i just hope a p/o doesnt get caught in the switches because we want to play nice.
the a.s.a.'s are also lining up against us, beware of the new a.s.a. boss, they have already started a new unit that is looking into civil cases against the police to see if the police violated any state statutes. what is the answer, stop cooperating on their criminal investigations? probably bad idea because we dont want those scumbags on the street either.
Where are our unions? they should be stepping in and standing up for their members, but of course they are just sitting back and waiting to see what the future holds.

"sorry, just following strict interpretation of chicago's chase policy, applied the balancing test, it is not worth endangering myself or others to engage in a vehicular pursuit. here's your copy of the case report, the detectives will be in touch. have a great day."

"why must all these candidates jump on the bandwagon and knock us to garner votes and appease the media."

_______________

Get it through your damn head that it is us, the police, that is the problem. Not the criminals. We are the problem.

We are going around arresting people and nobody wants that. We are enforcing laws that nobody cares about. Citizen-juries are granting millions of dollars to murderers. The citizens like the murderers, they do not like you. They are telling you to stop enforcing the law. Why do you keep enforcing the law? Nobody wants you to! Nobody likes you! Stop the madness!!!

Ever been to California? I truly believe more people will be saddened over the death of a Police dog then they would be a Police Officer.

Along I-5, from the edge of Camp Pendleton to the Coronado Bridge, is 40 miles. That chase is a no-brainer, they've pursued people from LA all the way to the Mexican border in the past. Every so often, someone makes noise about the pursuit rules, but nothing really changes.

I haven't seen a huge outcry for Stryker, but I haven't heard or read anyone running their mouth, either. They do get pissy here when an officer gets shot. Oceanside has lost a couple of officers in recent years. Dan Bessant a year ago December, and Tony Zeppetella in June of '03. They caught both perps. When Zeppetella's killer was sentenced to die last February, there weren't any protests, no "reverends" out screaming about "injustice".

Of course, San Diego isn't LA, it's not as loony down here.

Unfortunately, killing a police canine isn't equivalent to killing a human peace officer. Scroll down to section 600 and you'll see it's a felony, but the penalties are much less severe.

People do make noise over "unjustified" shootings in the rougher communities. There were six by the sheriff's department in 2005, five in '04, and ten in '03, which provoked some outrage in Vista, just east of Oceanside, where five of them happened within just a few months. They were all reviewed, all cleared, and everybody else went back to their lives.

In eleven years living in/near San Diego, I'd say law enforcement does a pretty professional job looking out for us, and people here respect them for it. (Our elected leadership equips them all with shotguns *and* AR-15s :-) )
