LA and Missouri
- In a tense overnight standoff, a man shot and killed a Los Angeles SWAT officer and seriously wounded another after calling 911 to report that he had killed three family members at a San Fernando Valley home, authorities said. A police sniper killed the suspect this morning, authorities said.
The sniper struck the man in the head about 7:30 a.m. as he tried to flee out a door, still firing his weapon more than 10 hours after the incident began, several sources with the Los Angeles Police Department said. By that point, a fire had ignited at the home.
Another SWAT Officer was wounded in the jaw, but is expected to recover.

MyFOXStLouis.com reports that the six people, including the mayor and two police officers, were killed, as well as the gunman.
Police shot the gunman, who had hit Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which had a reporter at the meeting.

A former Black Panther who fled to Canada and assumed a new life after the 1969 shooting of Chicago police officer Terrence Knox was taken into custody by law enforcement officials Thursday, his attorney said.
Joseph Pannell, 58, agreed to face attempted murder charges in Chicago and was picked up by U.S. Marshal deputies in Canada about 6:30 a.m., said Neil Cohen, his lawyer. He was expected to arrive in Chicago by Thursday night and scheduled to attend a bail hearing at Cook County's criminal courthouse Friday morning.
Cohen said he and the state had not yet come to an agreement on a recommended bail for Pannell.
I live in the next municipality over from Kirkwood.
I would compare Kirkwood to Naperville, if it was as far out of the city as Melrose Park.

The AP (associated press) quoted the offender's brother in their news wire story as follows:
Gerald Thornton told KMOV the legal setback may have been his brother's final straw. "He has (spoken) on it as best he could in the courts, and they denied all rights to the access of protection and he took it upon himself to go to war and end the issue," he said.
Can you imagine that. These news media outlets and newspapers would never of posted such a quote if the offender was white and the victims were black! They are almost trying to justify this black offender's actions because he lost a law suit against this small town.

REVAMPED 48 HOUR RULE
I haven't seen the order yet but, the Tribune reports that as a result of a class class action law suit, arrestees will have to appear before a judge within 48 hours of arrest.
Detectives were informed Thursday that suspects have to appear before a judge within 48 hours of arrest or be released. The previous practice required only that charges be approved by prosecutors within that time frame.
And the previous practice before this was that they be charged within 72 hours.
Detectives said that the change will put them under much greater pressure to assemble cases hastily.
"They're tying our hands behind our backs," said one veteran detective, who asked not to be named. "It's just one more thing to keep us from solving crimes."

You're absolutely right friend. If it's such an important issue to you I'd suggest you move to England, Canada, Australia or South Africa, all of them have national gun control programs and if you don't mind a violent crime increase rate of 60 to 140 percent it should be right up your alley.
On the other hand if you're a pro gun person you might try Switzerland, they issue almost everyone a weapon and even provide ammo for practice. Regrettably they have no national disarmament program which probably accounts for the fact they've never been invaded or conquered, kind of like the US.

Mr. Thornton was not some innocent bystander who the city just decided to harass. This is not analogous to the Filipino with the roasting spit I read about in the Trib.

The media in L.A. are doing a great job reporting the incident. Specials on the fallen officer have been going on almost every news broadcast. Totally different than the Chicago news media. Chicago news people should learn from L.A..

From what planet have you decended? Your point is irrelevant because the shooting wasn't a racial issue--you chose to make it one. The nut felt that the city unfairly targeted his business and responded as nuts often do, inappropriately. His race was irreleVANT (thank you) to this incident except to those such as yourself who, whenever the opportunity arises, move to attribute the failings of an individual to his/her entire race.
The fact that the media would track down those who knew this guy (his family for example) and would go so far as to QUOTE THEM is perfectly reasonable.
