History Passing On

  • Harry Richard Landis, who enlisted in the Army in 1918 and was one of only two known surviving U.S. veterans of World War I, has died. He was 108.

The remaining U.S. veteran is Frank Buckles, 107, of Charles Town, W.Va., according the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition, John Babcock of Spokane, Wash., 107, served in the Canadian army and is the last known Canadian veteran of the war.

Only one US Veteran left from "The Great War." And one Canadian. The last German Veteran died New Years Day. Another chapter written and finished.

Thank you for your service Mr. Landis.

Only 14 surviving World War I Veterans remain in the world. The last U.S. Veteran Buckles actually served in the trenches on the Western Front.

In my opinion, WWI vets had to be the toughest people to ever walk this Earth.

Off topic:
LAPD officers fired tear gas canisters into a San Fernando Valley house this morning as they tried to end a violent standoff that left one veteran SWAT officer dead and another wounded.

Its sad to see these great men pass on. They were a part of real history. The number of WWII Vets gets smaller everyday also. In my opinion the WWII generation was the greatest generation America has ever given birth to. They grew up during the depression, fought and won a horrific war, and turned this country into a super power. All before most of them reached the age of 25yrs old. Most kids today haven't even moved out of their parents house yet by that age.

Why are so many veterans homeless. I work for a social agency I'm sickened by how America treats their Veterans. use them then throw them under the bus. Perhaps this is not such a great country after all.

My guess is because of the same reasons non-veterans are homeless. Almost always bad decisions about personal behavior.

RIP, sir.

Politics be what it is........

In Washington D.C. the liberal [puke] purists who objected to yet another 'war' memorial plus the location planned almost held up the WWII Memorial so long that there would NOT have been a WWII Veteran alive to witness it!

I salute ALL veterans, past and present. May God Bless each and every one of you!

Are you fucking kidding me. No veteran should ever go homeless. Whatever their problem is the people of this nation should demand the V.A. take care of them. The V.A. should get a blank check from congress every year.
