As an aside, we had always wondered why New York needed 5 families to run their operations. Then we took a closer look at Chicago and realized there are probably a number of "families" running all sorts of criminal enterprises:
- The traditional Outfit guys
- The non-traditional Organized Crime people (gangs that own aldercreatures, judges and various politicians)
- The Daley brothers
- various minor factions that operate within these spheres (the Burkes, Madigans, Mells, Strogers)
You'd think that with 3 or 4 Federal task forces sniffing around Chicago politicos, we'd see something like this mafia sweep locally one day soon.

I think the FEDS are looking for a
way to do the same thing here(mass arrests) w/o gutting the entire city infrastructure; which someone pointed out weeks before,if chicago crumbles,it'll have a ripple effect on the whole country.
I think thats why daley & Bush were so chumy in chicago at dinner last year; they cut a deal.

The "feds" have a standing agreement not to go after anyone "in office". Ie. George Ryan. Dick is trying to cover his ass by creating the "get out of jail" card by his appointment of J-Fed. You are very preceptive. Daley and Bush are tight, and Daley's clout extends much further than the borders of Chicago and Cook county. Bush likes him, and even Patrick Fitzgerald has a boss. Daley won't be touched by the Feds. Now Blagovech is another matter. Even his fellow politicians don't like or trust him. Look for him to be indicted at the latest 2009.

Unlike Pookie, Boo-Boo, G-Money, Vato Loco, Joker and King Beaner, Vinnie, Tommy, Joey, Petey and "Antknee" take care of their "business" in a discretionary and professional manner (usually); the majority of the time w/o innocent/collateral casualties. The "mobsters" aren't slingin' dope on the corner between swigs off 40-ounce bottles. They aren't walking around impregnating every "b" and/or "h" in the 'hood thereby draining billions upon billions of tax dollars via "free" health care, public education, W.I.C., LINK, heat assistance programs, etc. And most importantly, they're not causing property values to plummet and urban blight to skyrocket where ever they reside. Yeah, the "connected" guys may have an edge with city contracts, but the "minorities" have their set-asides as well. I could go on and on with comparisons and contrasts, but we all get the big picture. The Feds need to pursue the real organized crime problem here in the Windy City - that problem being (disproportionate to other ethnicities)the black and hispanic gangs. In-depth immigration reform wouldn't hurt either. Stay safe & keep the Liberalcrats out of office.

I dont think anybody here is glamorizing the mob. I also agree that they are criminals,very bad too. But the point is they are not the major problem anymore like they use to be in the 50,60,70,80's. The real problem is the gangs in chicago both black and hispanic. Closing the borders is another issue. I think the point is that they, the mob are forgoten dinosaurs and are pretty much over compared to what they use to be. Organized crime in chicago now are the gangs.

No, repeal all laws prohibiting and/or 'controlling' the manufacture, distribution, sale, possession and use of all 'substances', restore the freedoms to pursue happiness, and the rights to life and liberty to the citizens and let the chips fall where they may.
Take the money out of this artificially inflated market of consumer desired products.
Regulate, as consumer products only, and tax said 'substances'.
It's how alcoholic products are treated, so why all this prejudice against substances whose moderate use is no more or less an issue of free choice?
Economic and social forces will be much more effective in avoiding the harmful effects of abuse or overuse of said substances.
Health insurance premiums are higher for those with a history of alcohol abuse, employers can fire or decline to hire individuals with a history of alcohol abuse, social and religious communities assist those who seek help in managing their alcohol abuse tendencies, so, why wouldn't the same be true for those who end up abusing the substances in question?
Remove the obscene amounts of money from the 'drug trade' and you'll do more to fragment and dissolve the cancer of gangs than any number of elite police units could ever do.
Plus, the money not 'needed' for investigation, prosecution and incarceration costs can be both not taken from the citizens by taxations and/or used to honestly educate about substance use and abuse, and to assist in treating those who find they cannot manage their taste for substances in a responsible and moderate manner.
We have 'detoxification' programs, both publicly and privately financed, yet, for those needing said programs because of their abuse of controlled substances, there is the added burden of the constant threat of arrest, prosecution and incarceration, said threat which hasn't been effective in discouraging said abuse.
Finally, who knows how many citizens use these 'controlled substances' on a regular basis and no one is the wiser?
Have the judges, prosecutors, elected public officials, et al, randomly drop every 3 months, and see how many 'piss hot'.
