Fundraiser

From our e-mail:
  • 10-1 in 010th District for a working cop with oral cancer. PO Tamez has been a cop for 16 years and a proudly served his country as a Marine. PO Tamez never smoked or chewed tobacco to get this horrible disease. He has already had his tongue and jaw partially removed and is currently in chemo for the second and final time.
  • I was hoping that you could help spread the message for this officer, who doesn't have much time left since the cancer has returned and the prognosis isn't good. The benefit is 29 Feb 08 at Hawthorne Race Track and all ticket sales go to the family. To make matters worse for this PO, his two kids have medical conditions which require constant care since birth. This PO is in dire need of help. He is a proud man who would never ask for anything. If there are people who would like to help contact the 010th District for tickets or send your donations to:
  • Chicago Patrolman's Federal Credit Union
    C/O "Friends of Jorge Tamez"
    1359 W Washington Blvd.

That just sucks. If he never really used tobacco enough to cause this than it's even worse.

This will qualify under the conditions I've set about me going to that crooked town of Cicero. Hope to see you all there.

I dont do fundraisers. But in this case I will. See, this is what fundraisers are meant to be about. When a guy is in need, THIS IS WHAT COMING TOGETHER IS ABOUT!

Over the years, the term "benefit" has lost its meaning. We have went from giving to those truly in need from no fault of their own to giving to help out a guy who stepped on his dick. Too quickly we slap the label "10-1" to a benefit only to find out it is because some prick slapped his old lady, got a DUI and/or gambled away his entire savings. It's like the story of the boy who cried wolf.

Every prick on this job feels entitled to a benefit if he or she steps in shit. It seems like every damn day someone is hitting me up for 50 here or a 100 there. It's time everyone brings back meaning to the term "benefit". Start questioning what this money is going to. Why is this guy having a benefit. Is it because of a medical condition and his insurance isnt covering the procedure? or is it because he got drunk, smashed a car and needs a new fucking big screen TV or water heater? maybe he swindled a few dope dealers out of a couple hundred grand...got caught and now...hey, he has 2 kids! what the fuck? OH WELL! SO DO I!

So please, scrutinize these benefits DONT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO! and if you are a PPO dont allow yourself to be strong armed you make peanuts as it is make sure the cause is a good one dont give blindly! And if they try the age old "take the ticket... Ill get it from ya later" DONT TAKE THE TICKET! Politely refuse and say "Ill get ya after pay day" and walk away. Dont worry, they dont know your name anyways and will forget the encounter in 10 seconds. DONT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!

But after you ask around, if it is a good cause, please give! Bottom line is TS, CS and the rest of the SOS boys had a fucking benefit and labeled the tickets "10-1" anyone else a little hot about that?

so please, DONT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO! these blind benefits are really taking away from what benefits are truly meant to do. DONT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!

I'd like to pick up a couple tickets, but I'm not sure on protocol. I work in the burbs, and their seems to be a lot of hatred for suburban coppers on this blog. I'm not looking for anyone to wash my back, but I also would like to contribute and show up without having to pop some obnoxious prick that starts to feel he can treat me like shit for not being CPD. Most of you all rather not be bothered by suburban ageny participation? Cuz out in the burbs it is many more small agencies, we have to get along together to work successfully.

To the suburban officer: a dislike of fellow police officers that has been perceived by some is a dam shame. Personally, I carry the same respect for all suburban, state, federal and other law enforcement agencies throughout the land. If a 10-1 was posted by someone other than a CPD member, I will continue as I have done in the past send off a check to help for the right reason.

Were all in the same game.

02/07/2008/ 1:12am. to my brother officer in the suburbs,i assure you that the mentality you have experienced does not represent the segment of the officers on this blog that believe that it does not matter if you work for cpd or any other small agency,if you wear the badge you are family and you should be treated as family. i believe what you have talked about is a problem with certain members of our department,we have forgotten the true meaning of the police family. god bless you for wanting to help a fellow officer in his time of need and please be assured that if one of your officers ever needed help, there are cpd officers who believe that we are all family and they will come to the rescue.

Two LAPD SWAT officers were shot while advancing on a barricaded shooter in the San Fernando Valley early this morning. SWAT Off. Randal Simmons was pronounced DOA at Northridge Hospital while SWAT Off. James Veenstrel is in critical condition.

Officer Simmons was the first officer killed in the 27-year history of LAPD SWAT.

Meanwhile, our prayers for Off. Jorge Tamez and his family.

To the suburban copper:

Hatred of suburban coppers is extremely exaggerated on this blog. I for one always slow down when I see one of you on a traffic stop to see if everything is ok, and on one occasion even tackled a guy as he was approaching the lone p.o. who was reaching for his pepper spray. I also have had nothing be positive experiances with suburban coppers, from traffic stops to going to their stations to pick up transports. Don't let a few fools on the blog influence your decision. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

If you are that paranoid, then just donate the money. You don't have to attend. This is about the officer in need not about YOU. Reading your post, and seeing how selfish you are about your feelings, I can see why suburban coppers get a bad name. It's not always about you-grow up. That being said, if you mean what you said about wanting to help then DO IT. Don't wait for someone to walk you by the hand. The officers on this blog are not going to do what you make your dispatchers do all day long-YOUR leg work. Pick up the phone , call the 10th district and buy the tickets. If you can't even figure out how to do that, I can see why the burbs get knocked by CPD.

To the suburban copper who posted above...That is all B.S....anyone who would ever say anything to you for participating in a cause like this is an first class A-Hole...as far as the feeling thing goes, that is a two way street....I am a Chgo Copper and I have been treated like crap from other suburban law enforcement agencies so that story doesn't hold water. I don't make a habit of getting pulled over in the suburbs and do not drink so....I have been read the riot act by a few agencies over the years...one time by a Harwood Heights PO for ...get this..."speeding" 7 miles over the posted limit!! That is a true story...I am quite sure that if you bough tickets for this cause nobody would object you your appearance/participation whatsoever. I also think you need to get over your preception of the CPD...we are not monsters...we are just like you..mabye a little more stressed out but we are all fighting for the same cause. God Bless.

My 45 yr old brother was diagnosed with unoperable stage 4 lung cancer in October. He found about this hospital and went there for a second opinion. So far so good, through there program and chemo his cancer has shrunk 40%. He is not out of the woods yet but there program works. Again if you know anyone who needs help take the time to check it out. There is absolutely nothing to loose except your life. Retired CPD

2/07/2008 11:20:00 AM

Good observation, the current Motorollas are about 5 watts, that is enough to cause cancer over an extended period of useage.

The FOP newsletter actually printed officer safety alerts on radio useage in the early 1990's. I believe 1992 to be exact. They suggested you always point the radio antenna away from your eyes while transmitting and only use the radio when necessary. There was also a mention of a possible health/cancer risk from prolonged radio useage.

The eyes are the most sensitive part of the body when it comes to EMF radiation. ALWAYS KEEP THE (CELL PHONE OR RADIO) ANTENNA AWAY FROM YOUR EYES.

GOOGLE EMF RADIATION OR CELL PHONE DANGERS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Recent studies also indicate there may be a risk of mouth, tongue, cancer from oral sex. This sounds ridiculous but is really gaining credibility. It has something to do with the HPV and transmission to the mouth during oral sex. The mouth is the perfect host for the HPV,warm, dark, moist, etc. Look it up and decide for yourself.

Stay safe and I wish PO Tamez all the best.

I don't have a "persecution complex", I'm not "paranoid", and its not "nonsense" to me. I asked a simple question about PROTOCOL to make sure I wouldn't be offending people. You are right, 11:32, about one thing. It isn't about me, its about the PO in need. However, from asking a question about protocol to avoid a problem or embarassment to those hosting a benefit hardly necessitates your rant stating I am selfish, blaming the bad name of suburban cops on me...which by the way, dumb fuck, says that you DO have a hard on for burb cops, which was exactly what I asked...and giving me advice to grow up. Actually, you sound more like a troll than actual CPD anyway, maybe I just got got.

So thanks the rest of you, I will be close enough to stop by 10 and pick a couple up next week.

Yes, you're also right about the B.S. benefits, but most are legit. If someone approaches you for a 50 or 100 and it's not in your budget or your not interested, just give them a 5 or 10 and tell them your busy that day and that'll be it. That way if you don't want to feel like a heel, you'll know you gave something at least. Kinda like church.

don't know where your hatred is coming from, but it is not generally shared among cpd.. cpd may bash outside officers for messing with cpd officers, but they mess with their own just as much... i ve worked with suburban police from many agencies and have never had a problem. as far as getting tickets i'm sure they will be available at the door. i have been to several benefits at bourbon street, all of which were not for cpd, this may be blastphemy(c.s.) but even one for a fireman. It s not about the agency it s about the person needing help. Look at www.paulclisham.com, this a benefit we are putting together on Jun 1st. but for know lets concentrate on Jorge Tamez. thanks for your support and hopefully it would be returned if needed. any questions you can find me in the 8th district, Lt. on 1st watch...

What is wrong with some of you? A Suburban guy asks if the Chicago guys are going to act like jerks .... and a couple of you just can't help doing so. It's a benefit for a good cause, grow up. I met Walter Jacobson at a benefit for a great guy who had medical problems years back. I am amazed that, knowing he would run into some of Chicago's finest not acting so fine, he would come. He said it was small potatoes compared to what the Officer was going through. I always liked him for that.

Sorry that our venting sometimes comes off this way. In the 10th District we deal with suburban cops all the time and always get along. If you would like to buy some tickets, stop in at 3315 W. Ogden and talk our friendly desk crew. There is a crusty old-timer on the midnight crew; he growls at first but he's really a sweetheart when he gets started.

for all of you deferred comp masters read this:

Q: Why would I try to match the market with an index fund when I can beat it with an outperforming mutual fund?

First of all, the question presupposes that a mutual fund that has outperformed a market in the past will continue to do so in the future. Numerous studies by unbiased university researchers have shown clearly that mutual funds with leading performance records are just as likely to underperform than outperform the market several years into the future. Many investors have concluded that they are better off not taking the risk and instead remain happy with guaranteed average market returns of an index fund. Second, actively managed funds inevitably have higher annual management fees and have a worse capital gains tax profile.

To Suburban Copper,
There are plenty of trolls on this blog, but as most other posters wrote, 99% of us are ALL on the same page. I work in 022 & plenty of nit-wits wanna talk shit about 022, but I patrol MY NEIGHBORHOOD where I & my family live. I've worked in other south side districts, but had the time to bid here & protect the homeland. 022 borders Alsip, Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn, Blue Island, Calumet City and unincorporated Cook County, as well as having Metra police throughout our district and I know I always stop to assist or wait to get a wave that all is OK from a fellow Officer before pulling away. The idiots that wanna talk shit about other coppers here are spineless asswipes. They are NOT the voice of the other 99% of us!
BE SAFE!!!

To the surburban officer: Any P.O. that would treat another P.O. in that manner regardless of what department he/she works for is an asshat and does not deserve to wear a name plate much less a badge.Resently I was out in Markham trying to rush and get my son to a skating rink and had exceeded the speed limit. To make a long story short the Markham P.O. that pulled me over was nothing but a class act,he could have thrown the book at me and chewed my out and i would not have complained because he would have been doing his job. Remember "WE" are all brothers and sisters who should look out for each other because no one else will. It should not matter what department you work for and to the P.O. from Markham I hope you read/visit this blog coming from C.P.D. I am truely thankful/grateful that you gave a fellow officer a break.

I don't know this copper, but I am an African American who does take the time to read SCC at least once a month. I am very happy to see such a positive effort. I will donate $100.00 to his account. I can't make the benefit but I will give him all the support I can.

Lets not forget his family after he is gone.........

What is wrong with some of you? A Suburban guy asks if the Chicago guys are going to act like jerks .... and a couple of you just can't help doing so.
***************

He acted like a jerk by insinuating he would get violent at a fundraiser. These are HIS exact words "I also would like to contribute and show up without having to pop some obnoxious prick that starts to feel he can treat me like shit for not being CPD"

He is the one assuming there would be some obnoxious CPD prick there. He is doing escatly what he does not want done to him which is stereotyping. He has an image of CPD but he does not want an image of suburban coppers in a bad light-give me a break! Again suburban copper, none of your dispatchers are on this blog, don't come here for an ego boost. You are more than welocme to be on here as no one I have talked to has spoken bad about suburban officers. CPD officers go home and forget, they don't bring the job home. At least not the ones I know. They are not OFFICERS 24/7 as you seem to be. They are husbands, brothers, wives, sisters etc. If you want to help then help. You seem to think your help has to be earned by some kind words first.

Also to the suburban copper, why can't you just go there as a PERSON? Why do you have to go there as an officer? Why does the fact that you are a suburban officer even have to come up at a benefit?

This is about PO Tamez and not 2/07/2008 01:12:00 AM, so please, enough about him and I'm sure that PO Tamez's family would appreciate his help.
Is there a designated PO in every District that sells tickets for this benefit? That would be great since not all of us, especially in this crappy weather and unable to dodging potholes, can drive all the way to 3315 W Ogden. Can FOP use their authority to talk to any media (TV/Newspaper) and try to publish this unfortunate situation of PO Tamez?

During my 13 1/2 years in 010, I had the great pleasure of working along side Jorge on the Watch and the Tact Team. I also had the pleasure again of working with Jorge on the Area 4 Gun Team.

Jorge has always been a true gentleman and dedicated father. Through all the fights, arrest, foot pursuits, vehicle pursuits, search warrants, etc. Jorge never once backed down. Jorge not only earned the respect of his peers and supervisors through out the years, but even the local gangs in 010 respected him. Jorge has always been there when I or anyone else needed him and always gave the company 8 hours for 8 hours.

If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Jorge, you would immediately notice his strong military background and deep ethical foundation. This can be attributed to his wonderful parents who use to welcome all of us into their home and feed us, especially on Holidays.

He has always had the strength and determination to make the neighborhood a better place and never gave up. To this day, Jorge continues to valiantly fight this thing with everything he's got.

I'm very proud to say that I've worked with Jorge, my prayers go out to not only him but his wife and kids. I ask that everyone who can, please come out and support this cause.

Thank You

A fellow brother and friend for life.

Have you ever been to a benefit?
Everyone there asks everyone they meet where they work. My god, leave the guy alone. He asked for a freaking tip on protocol, now you are just sounding stupid. Also the dispatcher poster, give it a rest. Sorry someone asked you to do something once. CPD officers go home and forget? My god, this is a freaking blog that they all post regarding police issues on. Are you functionally braindead? Do you think everyone is posting on here on duty? Are you?

"Where did you get that nonsense from? I barely if ever see anyone talk about the suburbs on here. I personally think hatred is a b.s. word. No one has ever said that they hate suburban coppers."
I'm a suburban guy and have been told by a CPD officer, face to face, that "I'm not the real police". And no, I hadn't done anything to her or even pulled her over.

Dear Suburban copper:

Having to pop someone??? Is that how you handle things? Pop someone at a benefit and hopefully that CPD officer you pop will have more class than you and just arrest you instead of hitting you back. If however he does choose to POP you back be prepared to stay down. The average CPD guy has had more fights in one year than your department put together will have in their whole career. Why would you even insinuate you would hit someone at a benefit? Maybe the other posters are right, you are the one giving other burb guys a bad name. I have seen many burb officers post on here and they are for the most part treated the same as CPD. However if you notice, CPD rips on other CPD. I seems as if being an officer is your ONLY identity. Please, if there is even a chance you will have to pop someone, stay home. Just mail in your money if your intention is to help. It sounds as if you go looking for trouble. When and if you do pop someone though, I hope I am there to see your a** in cuffs or face down on the ground. I certainly hope I am just misunderstanding you and that you are not as arrogant or unresourceful as you sound.

ive known george since i moved to little village and still kept in touch after we both moved out. this guy is a class act both in his police life and personal life. we each go out everyday to do our job not knowing if we would see our families again. its such a shame how george's life took this awful turn. we buy tickets for everything in this department, and it sucks to think that a family in such need like george's would have to ask for help, but as a a dpartment the police wont do s--t for him, but lets get together and show this fucking city that WE can take care of our own. GOD bless you and your family george and may you always walk hand in hand with the LORD, HE will never leave you alone. your friend A. L.

**********

You forgot to elaborate about you possibly having to pop someone. Pop? who even uses that word anymore. Move out of your mothers house already.
