No Money for Snow?

  • Unlike many suburbs, Chicago still has 200,000 tons of salt to drop on snow and ice-covered streets. But, there’s a problem. City Hall is running out of money.

From Jan. 1 to Feb. 4, the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation had spent $14.1 million of an $18.5 million snow removal budget that’s supposed to last all year.

After raising taxes some $276 million, this town can't even set aside enough money to get the snow off the streets during a slightly above average winter. What the hell were they doing with the snow money when everyone was screaming "Global warming! Global warming!"??

Expect another cry of "no money" as the contract progresses toward arbitration.

During the 60s & 70s, the winters
were always like this. In 67, i was
able to walk on to my garage roof
from the backyard. Perhaps this is the new cycle of weather for 5/10 years, and THEY should plan for it.
Global warming? Fat(nobel) al can kiss my ass...............

How about all the excess plowing and salting? Let the snow end before you start plowing. I know Byrne won because of the blizzard on 79 but how many millons have been wasted since then on oversalting and plowing?

We haven't had a real snowfall in over 20 years.

That's why some people whine about a few meager inches.

It's fucking snow, big deal.

If you haven't learned how to drive in it, move to Texas.

If you don't like shoveling it, move to Texas.

If you find it difficult to walk on it, move to Texas.

If you honestly think you've got a God given right to be free from the effects of Mother Nature, move to Texas.

If you really believe this is about anything other than the patronage hacks being rewarded with boocoo overtime, move to Texas.

But before you do, keep in mind that Illinois isn't the only state in the union that suffers from pervasive political corruption.

And that you'll have to both become fluent in Spanish and accustomed to profuse, daily sweating, should you 'move to Texas'.

Has this moron EVER taken responsibility for ANYTHING?

He's real quick to jump up and claim credit for the good stuff but is nowhere to be found when the bad comes along.

Pot holes? I know the answer.

Exactly!!!

The city OVER salts so the "MINORITY" contractors get more sweetheart deals on everything from salt, ashphalt and everthing in between.

Makes perfect budgeting sense to me.

We are supposededly bugeted for 13,000 P.O.s for 2008. The money is supposed to be there. Now what happens to the money not paid out for suspensions, early retirees, deaths or officers and civilians who just quit. An officer who makes say $85.000 a year and retires in June? Where does the remaining $42,000 plus go?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Morton Salt girl says:

Every Chicago citizen will be required to take their salt shaker from home and go out and shake salt out in the street in front of their house. If everyone does this, almost all streets in the city will be salted relieving the need of streets and san and thus saving the city gigantic buckaroos. If citizens don't do this, their is a "salt" tax up at the next council meeting.

Now hear this: the extra $$$ in salt reserves has gone to a Daley family member. This family member has a low sodium level and has one very large f*cking goiter on his neck. All the salt $$ is going to this clout family member.

Remember, If your car gets damaged by a pothole, take pictures of the car and pothole. Then file a claim with the City Clerk's office. They are responsible, not the State.....

I remember as a child shoveling snow all winter.

Now as an old guy I read that this is the worst winter in 29 years.

I don't see it. I only shoveled my driveway, porch, and sidewalks maybe 5 or 6 times all winter.

I didn't get stuck in the snow and made it to work on-time all winter.

It sounds like we've all become a bunch of pussies!

Give me winters like 1967 or 1979 again. At least it was fun!

**********************************

Did you see where all the money went for the snow removal budget?

Wages (manpower)

I think salt was last on the list.

It's mis-management plain and simple. All those clout guys and seasonal employees get paid to do very little in the course of the normal work week, then the snow hits and BAM! There all working over time like 24 hours straight! Making big money. It's a scam.

Just like the $58,000 a year 911 Dispatchers making $160,000 a year in over time, on top of the $58,000 a year salary. Then the spokesperson say's "we had no choice, we are short staffed, they had to work O.T.,blah,blah,blah!"

Lastly get rid of all the worthless Traffic control aids downtown with the bad attitudes!

We're all adults, if you get killed crossing the street because your parents didn't teach you to look both ways, "tough shit!"

I don't need some 1/2 wit yelling & flailing their arms acting like they rule me! Screw them!

Off topic, but worth mentioning: Ardelean's case was thrown out by the judge. It was beautiful to watch the two "victims" family members respond to the ruling. They plan to sue civily (of course), but hopefully the toxicology reports of the two choir boys will be made public.

How about $1.50 a paycheck for "Police Benefit" that no one can seem to explain. For 10,000 officers thats $30,000.00 a month. Seems theres a windfall for someone coming out of your pocket. Thats going to be some benefit.....

That reimbursement costs money saying that some retirees especially bosses have a huge and I do mean huge reserve of comp time hours.

Not a very well thought out question if you ask me.

Amen to that. However the TMAs' are funded by the Homeland Security $$ that Chicago gets. I think it would be better put forth into CPD. We need more training, new radios that can communicate with outside agencies, and how about an actual plan for WHEN a terrorist attack hits downtown. We are NOT prepared.

Remember the clusterf**k last fall with the marathon? Hopefully this will be something the new Supe will address.

City stopped hiring recruits. Hiring freeze. Despite funds already budgeted for new recruits, they stopped hiring. Where did the funds go to? Is this one way to reduce the budget? By reducing officers on the street through attrition? Where is the media on the hiring freeze?
