Ridiculous if True

From the Comments:
  • last night 08 Feb,2008 the 017th dist was calling for a Sergeant with a Taser....second time in a week an officer needed a Sergeant with a Taser...and guess what?
  • Disp: "1710"?
    1710: "1710"
Disp: "Do you have a Taser? 1762A is requesting a Sergeant with a Taser respond to School/Monticello
    1710: "Squad I don't have one"
Disp: "1750 Do you have a Taser?"
    1750: "I don't carry one squad"
Disp: "1762 do you have a Taser sir?"
    1762: "I don't have one but I'm responding to School/Monticello"
Disp: "Any Sgt in 016 have a Taser that can respond to School/Monticello"?
1669: "I have one but coming from Milwaukee/Foster..long way off"
Disp: "Ok I'll show you going"
    1669: "99"
What does this tell you officers? The General Order reads that "Any member trained in the use of a Taser is REQUIRED to carry it" Why is it that 3 Sergeants in 017th Dist do not carry the Taser to protect their officers?? This is the second incident in a week!! and the 3rd in the last month that NO 017th Dist Sergeant had a Taser to help their officers!! A Sergeant from another Dist had to be called to come and help them and on one occasion the same Sergeant arrived at 4200 W Lawrence when they called for a Taser....(016th Dist Sgt responded) Officers...You need to get on your W/C or Commander and MAKE these Sgt's carry the equipment that is provided to help you or help save your life when you need it...NO EXCUSES!! just LAZY SERGEANTS....
One of these days, someone is going to call for a TASER and if there isn't one on the streets, the coppers on scene are going to end up killing someone. Then there is going to be a HUGE investigation and all sorts of recriminations flying back and forth about training, liability, preparation and responsibilities.

And it isn't going to be pretty. But we're of the opinion if you have the tool available, have it handy for use.

Perhaps the reason that none of the Sgts in 017 carry a taser is because one of them got sued and raked over the goals for using it about 3 years ago. Suit finally settled last fall but in the meantime the Sgt was made to feel like he was going to lose his home, his job and his pension.

Yes after that occurs they'll check the Clout of the involved officers. When they see there isn't any, the State's Atty will press forward with Murder charges against these officers.
The Sgt.'s will dodge another bullet.

As far as I know, the order does not require a supervisor to carry the taser, it only requires that if you are going to carry one that you must be trained in its use. Some of the new supervisors have never been trained. Neither has a lot of the older ones.

Who is Airport KK? I worked special last night and was asking what the problem with KK is and no one seems to know anyone with those initials. Sorry to be off topic but the Airport seems like a pretty nice place to work.
Confused.

a taser was requested in 003 last week. SGT 330 was actually carrying one., wasn't needed though.

Of course the sgt didn't carry it until there was incident where 2 PO's were hurt in a fight having to deal with a guy with bigger prison muscles than 5 male coppers combined. Good thing the sgt was on scene to view that. Made him think twice about not going out with a taser.

A. All sgt's have not been trained.

B. If there is enough time for a sgt to respond from a neighboring district then you only want the TASER as an intimidation weapon.

C. FTO's have been trained did any of them have one? Or is it just easier to rail against a white shirt.

D. Yes, heaven forbid you actually have to use physical force like we did before TASERS, might mess your hair or break a nail.

Why not mace the clown and then take him down and cuff him. What is happening to this department? If a PO can not carry a taser, then do not even count on having one available if you get in the s#@t. Utilize the equipment you have, the stick, the mace, fighting skills, etc. Please stop the cry baby attitude and handle your job.

Simple answer.... it has come out that every time a taser is used, a log# is generated. Sgts dont want to deal with the bullshit any more than the blue shirts do, so they dont carry it. That is the state of things in this craphole of a dept. Someone is going to get hurt because this place is screwed up.

The order actually states that if you can safely carry the Taser you are required to carry it. The dept. requires that it be carried on the weak side in a crossdraw fashion. This makes it more accessable to the offender than the officer. I feel it is unsafe and therefore wont carry it. Also, the training is not mandatory and you have the right to decline recertification if you dont plan on carrying it. Several Sgt's I know of did not recertify for this reason. FTO's are now also carrying them if they wish. Bottom line, the Tazer is an alternate weapon and not mandatory.

Do you want to hear ridiculous? I said do you want to hear ridiculous?

There is a Lt. on 2nd Watch in 023 on Zone 2 who is completely out of his mind. When there was the street collapse in 019 this mental midget gets on the air wanting to know the status of a rapid from 023 assigned to 019 for crowd control. Well he goes off wanting to know why this 023 Rapid is involved in an accident in 013? He calls out one of his own Sgt.'s on the air telling him he has to supervise this car even though it has been detailed to 019. When his own Sgt. gets on the air and says the rapid is in 019 the Lt. goes nuts. Then 1900 comes on and says he's here with me. Turns out he looked up the (UH) Unit History for 1343 instead of 2343. The silence was defeaning.
This is the same Lt. who downs a car at Lawrence and the Red Line to prohibit people from feeding the pidgeons under the tracks.

Whats REALLY ridiculous is the fable told about 1994 F'ing other coppers.

VM has done nothing but go out of his way to help other cops the entire time I have known him. Yes, he does write alot of parkers. And from time to time he tags another cop. And no matter how big a jagoff the copper is, VM always takes care of it.

So I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden VM was out of his car, raising his voice and making an issue out of nothing. It would have been a first , and I have worked with VM for years now in 019.

From what I have been told, this punk had an entire street shut down and refused to show VM any credentials proving he was the police. Sorry, but merely stating "Im the police" just isnt enough.

I asked some of the guys from 023 who were dropping off prisoners at our lockup about this punk. They just shook their head. They went on to state their disbelief that given this clowns work ethic, they were surprised he would even help his own father. They also went on to say they are not surprised he created waves, that he is known as a do nothing that if not given his way cries like a little baby needing a bottle.

I wasnt there, so I dont know what really happened... Im sure somewhere in the middle lies the truth. But please, dont spew nonsense. VM is a nice guy who doesnt deserve the BS because some prick has some sense of entitlement.

You want to know why sergeants don't carry tasers. . . There is simply nowhere to put them on the duty belt!

The taser order mandates that the taser be worn on the weak side of the duty belt. Unless the sergeant has a 40"+ waist, there is no space to put it other than in the small of the back. Try moving your radio or mace to the small of your back and tell me how nice it feels while riding around in the squad car.

It's not that we don't want to carry them. The Department needs to amend the order to allow it to be stored in the glove compartment or trunk of the vehicle. There is no need for it to be on the duty belt. Perhaps they shoud assign one to each sergeants car. This way it will at least be available on the street when it is needed.

Not sure where the rumor began that anyone trained is required to carry it, but the order does not mandate it. (Please read it before you respond.) I have no place to physically hook it onto my duty belt (I guess I'm not fat enough) and have been ordered that i can only carry it in an approved holster / carrying device. So, either constant back problems from carrying it on my duty belt on my back (I cannot sit in my car without it in my back all day), or not carry it at all.

Am I the only one who has a problem with all these officers "on scene" calling for someone who is not "on scene" to come over and Taser someone? First off, you are the police, deal with the situation at hand, if you are afraid of getting hurt, get off the job. You also have several tools you can use before needing to call for a taser. Have you attempted to use them, or are YOU afraid of a log number and getting sued. It's real easy to bash someone (especially a white shirt) who isn't even on scene for not coming from who knows where, to bail you out of a situation. Also, by your ignorant, non capable ass not being able to handle the situation (or even trying to), and putting over the air your request for a taser, you now have just given the shitheads lawyer all kinds of evidence to play with when he sues the white shirt, YOU and the department for the pre-meditated use of a taser on his/her poor innocent client. Soooooooo, before you all go on the air crying for a supervisor with a taser, 1.Try to handle the job like we did in the old days, without a taser (sure your nails and hairgel may get messed up) 2. Think of the long term ramifications and legal recourse of the pre-meditated use of a taser while you are standing around afraid to get injured while a Sgt. (flying to the scene, hopefully doesnt crash and kill himself)comes from who knows where. Thanks LT

Are you fucking kidding me? That is your excuse. That Sgt is the only Sgt in 017 that has ever been sued. Well guess what Sarge? I've been sued too, I think maybe I'll lose my job, pension, balls, etc.
So I don't want to do to my job. I've been shot at and sued by black men Sarge. So you can do me a favor and tell the dispatcher my pussy hurts and I can't handle any job involving black people. How's that sound Sarge? I'm sure you will be quick to point out what a dog and what a pussy I'm to all your supervisor buddies. Kind of like what we are doing to you.

PS I have never seen a Taser carried in the of anybodies back. Unless your John Matrix from Commando I'm sure you have enough room on your duty belt to fit a taser.

PSS Since your afraid to use your weapon please retire and go work at
a blowjob factory.

22 yrs on the job. Fast districts, housing, tact....yeah it's been a lot of fun. Never used a taser or OC spray. I've been punched, bitten, spat upon, kicked. I've been shot at a few times times and even shot one time. I've also punched and kicked. I don't think I ever spit on anyone. I'm not a hero or a bad ass cop, just a regular guy who enjoys doing this type of work. Sometimes I got hurt, sometimes the bad guy got hurt. That's part of the job and I knew that going into it. My point being, fuck the tasers. Put your hands on the shitbag, throw him to the ground, hit him with your fists, "stunning blows", impact weapons....handcuff him an take him away. Go into the station and lean yourself off. When the adrenalin rush fades away have yourself a good laugh with your partners. You know, I've always said that Rodney King would have never happened here. Three or four Chicago cops would have simply jumped on the guy, wrestled him for a second, delivered a few stunning blows and handcuffed the prick. End of story. But in technology crazy LA they opted to tase King. The rest is history. Officers, don't be afraid to put your hands on badguys, that's what we do. If you are afraid, no big deal, get another job.

As far as shooting someone because a sergeant isn't there to tase the badguy.....you are in the wrong line of work. Tasers are NOT a substitute for deadly force. If you have been, or are thinking of using a taser in this manner you will be DEAD sooner or later. On the other hand if you opt to use deadly force when less than deadly force is called for you will be in the penitntiary.

Why is it so Ridiculous??? It amazes me the hypocricy of police officers. You know dam well if Officers had been allowed to carry Tasers, and now given the fact that log numbers are now created when used, you would be the first ones one here crying how you would not be signing them out any longer. How long has it been written on here " I am not doing any Police work any longer, F**K this City". Why is it good for only Officers to have that attitude. And don't start with the "they are leaders" and should set the example. Most of the comments on here are from people that just want to bitch and blame others for their bad attitude. You just want the Sgt to go through the lawsuit rather than you, otherwise you would have used the other tools on your belt and taken care of business instead of waiting for someone else to.

"who paid for those commercials anita." and then the deception started you repeated the question and we all know when you "repeat" the question you are going to give a deceptive answer its called looking/reaching for a answer.
then the topper was when you said you have tried police officers like the ones in s.o.s. we all know the only reason "YOU" picked that case was because at that point you knew you were going to run.
then on the top priorities 'we in are office' "NEED TO REACH OUT TO THE COMMUNITY" excuse me that is why they, and yes i said "they" because we don't have that up north we know the difference from right and wrong and don't need a day preacher to tell us the same. that is why they have one on every block.

I watched city desk today with Jody Weis as the guest. Quite interesting. I liked only one point that he made, about how he wants to take some of the governing power away from 35th street and let the district managers handle the district problems and crime pattern solutions.
He mentioned alot about how he "gets along" better with young officers. He will work out with them and stand by them no matter what as long as they are not stealing and lieing. As a 11 year vet what does that mean for me? I am tainted somehow and am a cancer? I cant be programed like the PPO?
He also said he will meet with the community "leaders". Who is that? The alderman are the only recognized leaders of certain communities! He will have town hall meeting where the community can question the bosses in public.?? "I want the officers to treat the public like on of their family memebers, even if they are loud and abusive." My family would never act like the crap that we call humans we deal with, I give up.

Log # shmog #......I will continue to carry the taser and if need be, deploy it to protect an officer from fighting with some nut case....Shame on any supervisor trained and not carrying it...Sounds even worse when working TARA (when it was still going) and a SGT from a southside district was calling for another SGT w/a taser....I went from the gas pumps at 37/Iron and made it there, fortunately no one hurt and in custody as I pulled up.....

Taser story #1:
Copper calls for taser, I respond from middle of the district. By the time I get there, there are Ten (10) squad cars parked out front (007 & 008). I wade through the coppers standing in the courtyard and see one asshole standing in the vestibule hitting his palm with his fist. He was daring the coppers to come in. All of these coppers were not afraid of this asshole they just wanted to see him get the chair. Its good entertainment. All I did was show him the laser light and led him outside. (he did end up getting tuned up out on the street.
Taser story #2:
Called to Groucho's parking lot 83rd and Pulaski in wee hours. Five or six coppers and a Sergeant wrestling with a pretty good sized drunk. As soon as they get off the drunk I taser him, hit him in the chest and waist. Give him the juice eight (8) times! It appeared that the thing wasn't working. One of the coppers grab him from behind and ends up moonwalking across Groucho's parking lot. (it was working) I then raised the guy's shirt and stuck the flickering clicking voltage to his bare chest. Guess what, NO effect. Get the asshole in the station and he say's "that taser ain't shit".
When it works its great, its always good entertainment. NOTHING beats a good ass whipping.

why dont they provide a lockable container in the patrol car for these things? If the city is worried about cost, you can have some high school kids in metal shop make them. Oops thats right they have cut funding so low in schools they probably don't have shop classes anymore.

actually, it seems like all the Sgt's in 011 carry them. at least on 2nd and 3rd watch, from what i've seen. whether they choose to use it is up to them but there have been times when an unhappy citizen has come into 011 and the if there is an available supervisor in 011, they are more than willing and ready to use the taser, if necessary.

Perhaps the reason that none of the Sgts in 017 carry a taser is because one of them got sued and raked over the goals for using it about 3 years ago. Suit finally settled last fall but in the meantime the Sgt was made to feel like he was going to lose his home, his job and his pension.

2/09/2008 10:55:00 PM

This is exactly why I can't blame the Sgt's for not carrying Tasers. If we have go hands on, so be it. Nobody really wants to touch some of these people, but sometimes we have to. If we have to use other tools, so be it. We gotta do what we gotta do. It's a great tool, but we can't be dependent on them. What did we do before the Taser? We still took care of business.

I don't understand how you had time enough to request a Taser several times over the air and then wait for a long off Sgt to arrive to help you. It's your job it's your arrest. Handle it. I would be embarassed to be you. You need an assist car fine, call for it. Use three of four PO's to handle it but don't cry like a baby that the Sgt is supposed to handle your job. General Order 07-01 (pg 38) Section I in BOLD print states this...read it. All of you pussy sergeants out there need to retire because if you don't "want" to carry the tool to help another officer you are a jagoff...plain and simple..All of you on this blog cry and bitch and moan about "Long guns" or "More firepower" you don't even want to carry a Taser!!! Why the fuck should we get "Long guns" or "More firepower" when you don't even want to carry an 8oz piece of plastic?? I carry one and think it is the best tool we have...if I get sued...oh well what can I do about it...been there done that..(Federal court 5 x's) I am not afraid to do my job and definately not afraid to protect my officers...they WILL NOT GET HURT WORKING FOR/WITH ME. The W/C or Commander in 017 and all districts need to make sure that the personnel trained to carry the Taser follow GO 07-01 or get a CR# on them...an officer's life may depend on it.There is NO REASON 3 Sergeant's in a single district on the same watch don't carry a Taser...that's uncalled for.Carry the weapon or give up the stripes...you have no balls and certainly have no interest in protecting your officers.

If one of them needs your assistance, it's your job to help, whether its with a domestic, advice, or tasering some jagoff! That's what you get paid to do.

To the sergeants that claim they don't want to get sued....GROW A PAIR! I agree and I know getting sued sucks! But as long as you use the taser as you were trained to, you will not, personally, be held liable. The city will pay out a large sum of money but none of it will come from you. Someone is going to get seriously hurt out there.

To the old timers that say "What happened to just using your hands and fighting with the guy"....RETIRE ALREADY! There have been some improvements to Law Enforcement equipment since you old fucks got on like expandable baton instead of wood batons, semi auto handguns instead of revolvers, bullet proof vests instead of wearing no vest. Now we have tasers. Apparently you haven't seen them used because you would be saying something different if you had.

You all need to get over this "white shirt" mentality and give some of them a chance. There are equal amounts of bad "white shirts" as there are bad "blue shirts." Not all sergeants are meritorious sergeants you know that only started about 10 years ago. Take care of yourself and quit worrying about everyone else. What did we all do before tasers were here? You are all cry babies who really don't know how to police without blaming someone higher in authority when shit hits the fan. Its the job - shit hits the fan - get used to it. Just be careful - be responsible for YOURSELF and your partner and stop worrying about all the "white shirts." Funny, I don't see sergeants on here whining about how horrible some of the officers are - and believe me - there are plenty of very bad problem officers. tazers are good tools but the police managed to deal with people over 100 years without them. spray them with oc or if you have to go to the stick. anyway you do it easily justifiable on paper. if you have to shoot the shitbird oh well too bad so sad.

You are absolutely right. The problem we have with the department today and that NO ONE knows how to justify their actions. Read a TRR - it gives you the word for word justification. Look at the use of force model - same thing - word for word. Don't be afraid to do what you have to do - just justify it. This is something FTO's should really be teaching recruits. Problem is, most FTO's only have a few years on as well and probably don't know how to do it. Bottom line is - go home safe - JUSTIFY YOUR ACTIONS. It can be done. Just think before you do any reports.

Give that Sgt in 017 an immediate CR to show them they can't get away with this bullshit.

How about give the officers a CR for not controlling a prisoner. They have pepper spray (it works), the have asps (they work) and they have batons (they work). What did we do before tasers?

I completely agree with the post that suggested that every supervisor should have one in their car. It is impossible to carry one on our duty belt like someone else said. STOP blaming everyone else - DO YOUR JOB!! Control the situation - we have done it for years without tasers!! But all of a sudden it is the sergeant's fault because he didn't have a taser. Where were the officer's tools?

Not sure where the rumor began that anyone trained is required to carry it, but the order does not mandate it. (Please read it before you respond.) I have no place to physically hook it onto my duty belt (I guess I'm not fat enough) and have been ordered that i can only carry it in an approved holster / carrying device. So, either constant back problems from carrying it on my duty belt on my back (I cannot sit in my car without it in my back all day), or not carry it at all.

You are right about that! Not only is it bad for your back to carry it like we are required, but how do you pull it from your weak side when it is in the small of your back? Once again, officers looking to blame a sergeant without thinking it through or actually talking to one asking for the reason. Can't do their job right? It must be a sergeant's fault. Thats the new generation....It can't be MY fault!! You can't hold ME responsible!!!

-- A supervisor who knows

That has to be one of the most unsafe ideas I've heard. Keep the taser in the trunk? Glove box? What the hell good does it do there when your in a house, apartment, or high rise? Or half a block from the car for what ever reason?

Listen, I'm not hear no rip on anyone when talking about tactics and safety. And there are a dozen ways we could arrange our duty belts to be more accomidating. But leaving equipment in the trunk is not a good idea. Do we keep our pistols in the trunk? Mags? If it don'f fit on the belt, purchase a drop holster for it. Sure they silly, but you still have it. Or if you wear a vest cover, get a pocket put on for the taser. Do you wear cargo pants? Put it in one of the leg pockets. I' not a fan of the cross draw idea. That takessome getting used to. Who cares where its worn, as long asits worn safe and secure

Point is we should ALL carry them. I'd rather tase someone that beat the piss out of him/her. it keeps me from getting hurt as well as the offender. Also its effective on someone who may be high on whatever and feeling no pain. Oh and someone with all those prison muscles, works even better.

And catching a law siut? Well it wouldn't be the first, and won't be the last. If you're afraid of a law suit then you are in the wrong profession.

Stay safe

It was nice to get a smoke up my ass about all the hard work they are doing for our contract.
Why don't we just send things directly to arbitration and be done with it. FOP can make all the demands they want and the city will stall until it goes to arbitration anyway.
I have 2 suggestions for FOP.
Hire a PROFESSIONAL negotiator to work for us and a PROFESSIONAL PR firm to get represent us in the media. The only time we get any media attention is when things go sideways. The FOP said that most of our work isn't newsworthy. If thats the case. A good PR firm would be able to fix that.

Hour later two m/1s armed force their way into the side door and tie up 20 yoa woman p/os girl friend.

female forced to dis robe for offeders who are demanding location of the officer who lives in residence. Offenders hooded want to sexually assault female when some thing made them flee.

M/1s immediately flee, in a vehicle
no description at this time. What was the original call, 2 m/1s in alley in vehicle.

P/o is assigned to 004 brother in 008.

My question: Were is the community alert, why have the dicks or district not put out a formal message. Message should be put out for all concerned police officers.

Are these two offenders the officer may have locked up or encountered on job . People something should and must be done about this violation to the officer and his nearly raped significant other.

The area better assign some aggresive detectives to this investigation not the usual do nothing mopes from midnights.

How did the offenders obtain the officers home address?

Some one from 022 please let us know what is going on.

With all the bullshit we have to carry these days, unless you have a 40"+ waist, there's no way you can fit it all, unless you want a taser riding up your ass! Hopefully they'll offer training to everyone so the little whiners can handle their own battles, rather than having their Sgt bail them out. ARE YOU NOT THE POLICE??!!

or how about this:

lots of the tasers are in disrepair and may not function at all...?

Most of the 'holsters' are in worse disrepair and there is no word on when they will get a contract out to repair them-who want to take a chance that the taser gets taken away due to poor equipment?

or...the Taser corporation may have fudged it's documentation to get tasers approved in the first place?

or...you can usually only 'qualify' with a taser one day a week so it cuts down the availablity to get to therange and do so?

And maybe if you learned to talk to people instead of rushing through something to get to your girlfriend's house or get your 'two-three-four" on the end to go get drunk, you wouldn't need a taser?

It seems that the pos on the blog are pretty quick to point figers and assume it's the other guys fault (at especially supervisors) and that they are some sort of super cop.

Get over it - the more you put out this bullshit, the more it divides us- white shirt or not-we're all blue. There have been plenty of times I've been backed up by a white shirt because my 'blue shirt' brother was taking his time getting to my job-and I've been damn greatful for the help.

Here's another good story involving the taser: 1130 / 3rd watch (Tricky for those of you that don't know this PUSSY), is asked to respond to a violent individual with his taser from one of his 30-sucktor cars. PUSSY'S response: "I'll respond but I'm not gonna guarantee I'll use it". How's that for "leadership"? The PUSSY has psychic ability to see whether or not he'll have to deploy the taser as he's being asked by the zone to go to the job. It's certainly no wonder that this Sgt. got his ass kicked and shoulder dislocated by a 15 year old girl a few years back. Your cowardice will get you hurt again,PUSSY. And hopefully soon.

Again, the retards jump to conclusions without the facts. No wonder the citizens hate us, there are so few of us that actually engage our brains before we open our mouths. Let's go over a few points, some of which are mentioned above.

1) The order does NOT require ANYONE to carry a TASER. I would have liked to think that SCC would have looked that one up before repeating an erroneous comment on the blog.

2) The comment neglects to mention the availability of FTO's who are also allowed to carry TASER's. Funny how the commentator has the exact radio dialogue, and is ignorant on the number of FTO's on duty. Sounds like someone with an axe to grind with supervisors. Again, too bad SCC didn't bother to check that one out too. SCC can Google an obscure judge to dig up dirt, but can't ask someone in 017 if there were any FTO's on duty. Perhaps Fran Spielman would have checked first.

3) Believe it or not, not all range instructors are trained to re-qualify people with TASER's. The training fax says to go qualify with your primary weapon and TASER. What it doesn't say is that when you get there, you might be told that you'll need to come back because there is nobody there to do the TASER re-qual.

4) For every story you tell of someone calling for a TASER and nobody had one, I will produce 3 P.O's who were glad to see someone with a TASER show up to their job.

To the original commentator, and his/her band of retarded followers, I say please quit this job. We don't need you. To SCC, for having reprinted such an obviously erroneous comment, I say that the Sun-Times is looking for a few good yellow journalists.

But it seems impossible to get officers to back a P.O. who is not a detective or who is not slated by the Daley machine. J.M. said that if he was FOP president he would keep the same average P.O. salary and that in itself demonstrates that he just wants what's best for his fellow copper's. Not for himself.
J.M. has the balls and the brains to stand up to the media and public and he would fight for our reputation and respect . He also has the resources and money to finance the cause . So why not give him a shot and at least consider somone of his calibur ? J.M. hates politicians and is loyal to the Working Police. He is a southsider and has also lived on the northside. A guy like him would be great for the average P.O. Remember if we unite we have the numbers and can make it happen . So if your tired with an FOP who is silent with the media and rarely backs us coppers in public then the time is NOW !

If PO s would use the equipment given them IE nigtclubs, ASPS, Mace, THIER hands they wouldnt need a Taser 99% of the time.

But its easier to blame the Sgt. because YOUR afraid to use force and do your job. Much easier to ask a Sgt. to Tase him because Then its on him".Plus then the Sgt. has to do a TRR instead of you.

I have a mental, instead of TRYING to talk him down Ill dump it on the Sgt. and ask for a Taser right away.

First, go read that order. It states that if you are trained to carry a Taser, you are required to ask for one. Period.

Second, nearly all Range instructors are Taser instructor certified, that's a fact.

As far as I'm concerned if the Sgt's or FTO's don't have enough balls to take out a Taser and look out for their fellow officers, they should turn in their stars. Wah Wah, I'm afraid to get sued. Go wait on tables somewhere and leave the job to men, and several women who do their jobs as well.

Look, I'm not a sgt. but having a smallish waist, I know where he's coming from. I couldn't possibly fit all my stuff on the duty belt, so I carry flashlight, pepper spray and radio in vest pockets. It's not just a comfort issue, it's a safety issue. When equipment placed on the belt is positioned in the middle of the back, it makes for a slower draw. I was unable to draw my light from there due to length of light as well as my own shoulder width. And having the light flush against my spinal column was excruciating (that can't be good for ANYONE). All this sgt. seems to want is an alternative holster, so cut him a break.

I need the equipment, not the sergeant. I'm not a child, Im a fucking police officer. I get paid to handle other peoples problems, not dump them on my Sgt. Supervise me when Im stuck, (another PO involved in something, an incident that might draw media attention, or if I just plain have a question that the sgt is supposed to know the answer to) but other than that, I wish we could go back to the 'don't call me and I wont bother you either' mentality.

Well well well. I believe someone spoke of the illustrious LT. Kohnen from 023 days. That pigeon chasing moron who likes to hear himself spew on the radio all fuckung day long. That incident with him and running the eh of 1343 and thinking that 2343 was handling an accident in 013 isnt even the tip of the iceberg. The guy is on the radio on saturday coordinating a fire that was happening in 023. He's talking all kinds of shit but to find out, he's sitting at the corner of Lawrence and Sheridan the whole time. Turns out he says he was just trying to see how his sgts handled pressure. I dont think so. I bet u were too scared to go anywhere near that scene cause those same sgts probably would have beat your ass and thrown you in you coward. Or because you were sitting at Lawrence and Sheridan you were probably stopping people from feeding the pigeons. In other words you are a bold faced PUSSY who cant stop talking on the radio for two fucking seconds. You dont know what the hell you're doing cause you spent so many years hiding inside. You are probably afraid of your own shadow. Do the entire district a favor, shut the fuck up. Your voice makes our skin crawl and you tie up the air with your endless bullshit. Go back to an inside job cause you're no good on the street. And if you want to help at a job respond there dont be scared or is it that you just don't know what the hell you are doing. You are a disgrace to the men and women of this dept. You dont deserve to wear this uniform. Men and women of the north side districts: be aware this goof is a danger to you and all other police officers out there. he will screw you if he can. he was once an inspector and he still thinks like one. I have watched him while he sits in his car: all he does is fuck with his pdt. he does not go to jobs. he calls people and asks if you showed up and how you provided service. he is trying to move up the ladder by fucking another cop. He was caught harassing a female p/o in 023 at the xmas party and when he was told to take a hike he got all defensive even though his dog ass ugly wife was only 10 feet away. now he's on the warpath. beware. Again his name is Bob Kohnen. He is a LT. although he's no better than a goddamn ppo. Please do not erase this message this is very important. This douchebag will fuck any copper that he can that is his goal. I know cause I have heard him say it. He wants to move up and thinks that he can impress our new boss by acting like a retard. City hall cancelled the class before they entered the academy. After the final power test, they were completing paper work and were told go home by city hall. Some already quit previous jobs. J-FED was NOT involved. Hiring freeze by city hall, no recruit classes scheduled in future. Very cold to tell those future recruits to stop paperwork and go home. No one cares.

I believe that according to GO they have to sign one out and do not have to carry it on their person, but have to have it in their possession (in the trunk). Double check with the union & file a CR against a supervisor that doesn't want to do his/her job!!!!

Ummm...not sure where you are getting your information but you are WRONGQ!! They MUST be carried on the weak side of the duty belt. Once again...blah, blah, blah and you can't back it up with anything factual. List the general order where I can find what you just said.

What a punk! Perks like 19th dist sergeants committing a sexual assault while on duty or how about Spike A ( death investigation). or maybe a now Capt who was a DUI with his unmarked take home care killing a women crossing the street.I got a hundred of them, Who the fuck you kidding Sergeant your a white shirt. I've been around 27 years, tell your lies to someone who doesn't know

**************
Idiot!!! Those are not perks - those are criminal acts. Sad if you don't know the difference. I do not defend the sergeants you spoke about. Putting on a white shirt doesn't give the right to commit a criminal act - if they do - fire them and lock them up. This is not different than if a "blue shirt" commits a criminal act. These are not perks - perhaps the sergeants you speak of are CLOUT heavy. That is completely different. Been a sergeant for 14 year, on the job for 23.....so I do know what I am talking about. Just be very careful about mixing criminal acts and perks up.

You guys......if it wasn't such an important issue your ignorance would amuse me. The city will indemnify you a a lawsuit and they have and ill continue to do so. But they are not allowed to indemnify an officer when PUNITIVE damages are assessed. Get it? PUNITIVE...that's all you baby. Your house, your pension, your paycheck, your future...PUNITIVE baby!!!!! Just ask those sorry-assed Will county coppers in the Riley Fox case. Their futures are ruined.

...ommy and Daddy some of us on this job actually fought with bad guys using such out of date weapons such as six shot revolvers, wooden batons and sometimes we even had to put our hands on the bad guys and actually fight. Grow the fuck up and be the police before you talk all your shit about police work you have never done or been part of. Really miss the days when blue shirts knew how to be the police and there was a thing called The Chain of Command and real police officers took pride in the fact they didn't need to cry and whine to the white shirts to take care of shit on the street. Nothing but the

"I have a mental, instead of TRYING to talk him down Ill dump it on the Sgt. and ask for a Taser right away."

How about getting some extra training?

The training for the CIT program is great but it is a volunteer program -you need to sign up and take some initative. Contact Jeff Murphy or Bill Lange and they'll be happy to send you out an application. I think you can even get it on the intranet. You don't need your boss's permission, it gives you a week off of your regular assignment and you might learn a few things that might prevent you from needing a taser. The training involves a team approach with a sergeant carrying a taser to protect the two po's negotiating.

And it actually works.

Punitive damages are usually only awarded and assessed personally to the officer involved if a wanton disregard for G.O., or delibarate and inappropriate act that falls outside the scope of his duties, or outside the use of force model occurs, not the proper use of a Taser. Lets fix the problem and get the Tasers to the people that are out there handling shit..the workers.. the FUCKING PATROLMEN!
That way we wont have the working coppers motherfucking the supervisors that refuse to carry a taser. If they dont want to carry one, and the G.O. does in fact state that they must (I havent read it but it seems to be quoted only in the arguments stating that it IS in fact required) First you have to find out if that Sgt is certified, and if so, get a CR. Respect is a two way street and if they expect us to handle our job, they'd better be ready to handle their own as well.

I'm a Sgt. and I don't always carry my tazer. Usually it's because I can't find a holster that isn't broken in the radio room. Over half of ours are broken. What really pisses me off are the P.O.s, usually with less than 8 yrs on the job who just use the sgt. to make their decisions for them. And the use of the tzer is one of them. More than once I've shown up on a job where a tazer is requested and find out that the P.O.s have not even done anything to engage the offender. The guy has a scowl on his face and right off the bat, "Get a tazer." We are here to direct and supervise, not to make your decisions for you. Usually P.O.s call for Sgt.s to make a decision on not having to arrest someone or write a report. We're not here to hold hands or to get you out of doing work. You want us to carry the tazers all the time, so be it. But God help you the next time I show up on a job and you can't decide wether or not to lock up a shop lifter, or domestic battery offender. Or for all you F's who stand outside a residence cowering waiting for the sgt. to arrive when you haven't done squat to engage with an offender. You want equal respect from other P.O.s but don't think you need to do the same amount of work.

Perhaps the reason that none of the Sgts in 017 carry a taser is because one of them got sued and raked over the goals for using it about 3 years ago. Suit finally settled last fall but in the meantime the Sgt was made to feel like he was going to lose his home, his job and his pension.

As most of us should be aware of, injuries can occur during a fight. These can range in severity from a bruise to death. Ideally we will win all the fights and come away uninjured, but the reality is that doesnt always happen. There are plenty of PO's that are on IOD and even injured to where they cant return to the job over some bullshit that the original victim never even bothered to show up to court for. However tough you think you are, there is always someone who is tougher or just might get in that lucky shot. Utilizing your options doesnt make someone weak and it is ok not to want to fight someone.
We have tools at our disposal to help us win the fights. One of the tools is a taser. Most of the time the fight is on without having a chance to call for one and you handle your business. But I have been in situations where I have called for a taser because there was time and the offender gave us every indication that there was going to be a fight the minute we walked in (this includes balling up of fists while standing in a corner with verbal threats). The choices in these situations are go ahead and start fighting (been there, done that, did my share of hurting, and of getting hurt), or call for a sgt. who should be nearby and equipped with a taser. 80% of the time when a sgt. shows up with a taser, all he had to do was point it at him and upon seeing the little red dot on his chest, the offender gives up without even a little struggle. Sounds like a good plan to me, we all go home uninjured. There is nothing wrong with waiting for a taser if you have the time. If the idiot decides to try to get away while your waiting the 5 minutes for a taser then your back to square one and the fight is on. Some of you guys talk real tough but it sounds like youve never been in a serious fight in your life. ITS NOT FUN. If it can be avoided by someone pointing a plastic gun at the idiot, why wouldnt you take that option? Calling someone a pussy for calling and waiting for a taser if they have time is like calling them a pussy for wearing a vest.

I am a Sgt, and I have said it before and I will say it again:

Anyone (Lt., Sgt or FTO) that is qualified and does not carry a taser should not be in the position that they are in. The taser is a tool which can, will and HAS saved many coppers from getting hurt. The main job of a supervisor (not FTO) is to insure the physical and legal safety of their subordinates. If you are too afraid of being sued, or of doing some paperwork, then get fucking lost. In my district (south side) not all sgts carry them. I have made comments to them and I have gotten told to mind my own business. Maybe I should. I'm not going to run to the Lt or WC, I'm not a rat. So I take one out every day and roll towards mentals and shit just in case. Not bragging, just stating fact. I will (and have) zap a motherfucker if he's got it coming.

But I would like to make 2 points:

1. There are not always enough tasers to go around. Thats a pity, the Dept doesn't fix them fast enough.

2. As previously stated within this thread: the taser is not a substitute for deadly force. If joe is is doing something that is putting your life in danger, or someone else's life, take action. As explained during the training-the taser is health insurance and your gun is life insurance. Do not confuse the two.

Follow me. I am ready.

We don't have a problem in the 009th District with Sgts and tasers like in 017 or 016. At times it can be a busy, violent place to work. There is always a supervisor with a taser assisting on jobs. We are fortunate to have white shirts in the Deering District that will go the extra mile for the POs. We are lucky.

Shame on any Sgt.for NOT carrying a taser based on concerns over a goddman lawsuit. The taser is an approved stun device, carried by tens of thousands of cops in this country and abroad. It has undoubtedly saved a lot of lives, even those of the assholes we bear the responsibility of getting into a cell in one piece. It also protects a lot of us from injuries that could debilitate us for the rest of our careers. I carry one every day I roll out, and I don't worry about some asshole filing suit because I've used it to prevent injury to a PO.
