Seems the "J-Fed" moniker is now accepted practice at the Sun Times. Nice to see we helped start a trend.
And of course, the typical media slander regarding overweight cops. On the whole, we've noticed that CPD doesn't seem out of line with the general population in terms of body types. What seems to convey a sense of "overweight" is the bulletproof vests, the tons of crap carried in vest pockets, a 25 pound duty belt that pulls already shapeless polyester into a saggy mess and people using the cargo pants pockets for anything that doesn't fit in the vest.
Are we (and our readers) the only ones starting to feel this so called "fitness" spiel as a piss-poor distraction to the real problems of rampant cronyism, political favoritism and general all around unprofessionalism in the face of rising crime rates and a death spiral for morale?

Let it be known, we only get a half hour for lunch, and no time to get to our lunch location.
We get to our lunch location, and it's usually a crappy fastfood dive (unless you're on a tact team or in a specialized unit). So, we order our food. And by the time it comes, 15 minutes have gone by, and after scoffing the food down we're clear, and the dispatcher is hammering you.
How the fuck do you expect us to stay in shape on this job, when, if we're lucky to get a lunch, and if we're not bringing our lunch; eating healthy is not an option on this job most of the time.

I heard that the way the economy is going, they're going to start cutting back on gravity. Gravity is such a waste of energy. It's always on and my toes were getting tired of gripping the ground trying to keep myself from floating off somewhere. So in order to reduce the amount of energy I'm wasting, I've beaten them to the punch. I put on a little extra lbs. I also heard the same group bitching about the environment have noticed the atmospheric pressure is too much. So now my internal body pressure has exceeded the 14 pounds per square inch by approximately 14.385900 pounds p.s.i. just to piss them off. Which also explains my slight gerth.
Therefore; you may think I'm fat but really, I'm prepared for the gravitational and pressure changes. I'll reduce my internal pounds p.s.i. when the atmosphere changes.

In 1992, the City of Chicago adopted an anti-loitering law. The law, which defined loitering as "remain(ing) in any one place with no apparent purpose". It was struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States.
In 2000, the city adopted a revised version. Loitering was then defined as "remaining in any one place under circumstances that would warrant a reasonable person to believe that the purpose or effect of that behavior is to enable a criminal street gang to establish control over identifiable areas, to intimidate others from entering those areas, or to conceal illegal activities"
So all of those contact cards and arrests that state, "offender was observed loitering in an area known for high narcotics area" is illegal. The officer needs to prove that a known gang member is establishing control over his turf, or intimidating others from entering his turf, or concealing other illegal activities.
So per the Supreme Court, an officer can't detain someone from standing in an area known for high narcotic sales unless he can articulate any of the above three points.
I personally won't use "loitering" in another arrest report or contact card ever again unless I can articulate any of the three points.
Why bother getting sued when the city will hang us out to dry?

I recently was conversing with a friend of mine that works on the northside and have come to the conclusion that many northside cops cannot relate to what actually goes on down on the south side. Now i'm not talking down about them, or talking about the guys that did their time down there then transferred up. I'm talking about the guy that went straight out of the academy to a district filled with people that actually respect the police, know how to act in a civilized manner and for the most part are decent people. I really think they have NO clue what it's like to go into these domestics, or shooting/stabbing scenes and try to reason with these people that seem like should all be caged.
As i was explaining my day, which to me seemed very average, he couldn't believe: 1st) the amount of calls i answered in the one day and 2nd) the severity of the calls and situations. He related that i must be nuts to stay down there, and the more and more i think about it, I am.
The extra 15-20 min drive is starting to sound like a pleasure when the end result is not having to deal with wild beasts running amuck on the southside streets. Although i still have fun down there and i really love the group of people i work with, i've got to start thinking if the stress and general annoyance is worth it.
Any input from northside cops? Especially ones that were south and transferred up?

If we LOOK professional, we will feel professional.

For every insult hurled at us, there should be a counter punch thrown back at them. Drinking after work? I can think of a few reporters that have caught DUIs. Doty had the refrigerator removed, that was paid for by the 3 desk crews, people used to actually bring brown bag lunches, that for the most part were actually healthier than buying fast food crap. 006 had a Biggest Loser contest in the past and has one going on right now. The rules and win categories are much better this second time. I don't advocate forced weight loss, but if you look at the money you can save by bringing a lunch, $ becomes my incentive.

Not a good comparison. They don't work 6 days in a row. What do they work 92 days a year or something like that. Oh they work 24hrs...yeah right. They are at work 24hrs but actually work what 3 maybe 4 hours each day. They make their own meals. They don't have to eat fast food because their lunch is over 10 minutes after they get the food. Not good at all. try again.

Yeah, it's nice to be able to workout while on the clock, eat a nice hot, cooked meal, take a nice nap. There are hardly ever any real fires anymore, mostly ambulance runs, they should cut the engine companies down and add a few more ambulances. Then, they should put them on 8 hr. shifts so they can see how the real world works, 30 minutes for lunch, staying awake, no wearing jammies etc. no lounging around watching cable. My heroes....

The reason they lowball the begining raises is because when you get less up front, the other raises are less. Because even if the second raise is higher, its less money because your getting only that percent of a raise on a lower salary.

You work 96 days a year, not counting vacation time off, and see how much time you have to stay in shape!!! Yes they are hereos, but I have never had any fireman complain when they ask for help in the projects going to a fire because I am to fat...The main part of the public who cares about fat policeman are the ones being locked up or ticketed by them... But go ahead and keep bashing us and judging us on looks, it shows what a small minded person you are!!Don't worry I'll still protect you when you call, mustard stain on my shirt and all, :)

Made the move myself with no regrets. Better bosses, better food, less hectic. True, the drive to work is longer, but substituting an extra 15 minutes for travel is worth a happier 8 hour shift in my book. And its a low risk move.... can always go back to the ghetto from whence you came.... for me its a no-brainer. Once you are tired of the southside pace, the northside works out just fine! And if you get tired of the northside pace, you can always go back south (this rarely happens!)

New Sgt's list is coming out next week. It is going to be a class of 50, 15 merit people. Bad news though: You didn't make the cut.
I recently was conversing with a friend of mine that works on the northside and have come to the conclusion that many northside cops cannot relate to what actually goes on down on the south side....
I really think they have NO clue what it's like to go into these domestics, or shooting/stabbing scenes and try to reason with these people that seem like should all be caged.
Any input from northside cops?
Oh yeah, well here's your input...as a current south-sider, I grew up in the city and have live in all parts and let me tell you I know what it's like for to police on all sides. But don't act like ya'll on da south end handle every single call with expedency cuz I've seen first hand that it don't happen that way. "Smoke and mirrors" apperance is just what it is, looking like something you are not, something you may never be. When all hell break loose, all I want is a cop. Long, tall, short, fat, Black, White, male, female, shiny, dusty. Every so often the City get someone who addresses the weight problems of police offiers, if they were really concern, weight and condition would have been made part of the hiring guidelines, until then J-Fed and the media can suck on this. We also would be in great shape if we could sit in our station house and wait for a call. We could life weights, prepare good foods, etc. You Mr. CFD man, ride your whole shift in your fire truck and have restrictions on lunchs and lets see how out of shape you get.
Also, if you CFD guys are such big Hero's, quit calling on the CPD to go to EVERY one of your jobs were you don't need the police. Or are you to SCARED to be out on the street.

I have noticed that too. Actually, if you look at ANY contemporary mainstream political cartoon, it is always a white person being made a fool of. If the cartoon contains a minority, especially a black one, the minority is always portrayed as the righteous individual, while the white person is shown as stupid or evil or greedy or ignorant.
This Weis guy is worried about overweight cops, SUV patrol vehicles, universal weapons, etc; etc; but refuses to address real problems in the department. Crime is going up to early 90's levels partly because there is a pro-active work slowdown. Everyone can clearly see Weis wants to make his legacy about how many cops he suspended, fired, or indicted. I have no problem with dropping the hammer on P.O's like Abbate, the S.O.S. thugs, the 007 P.O. arrested in Forest Park, and so on, but don't have an attitude of sticking it to every copper who is accused of something especially minor rule infractions. For example, this new memo stating that any copper caught drinking off duty, minding his/her own business, not doing anything illegal or bothering anyone, will have to answer to the W/C and IAD if they receive a complaint the officer is drinking. Morale is about as low as it can get. The rank and file have no contract, no support from the city or Weis. The FOP does nothing to combat the negative smear campaign by the local media. It's going to be a long hot violent summer. Lets just hope a police officer isn't killed due to hesitation and fear of being thrown under the bus by this city and police administration.

As i was explaining my day, which to me seemed very average, he couldn't believe: 1st) the amount of calls i answered in the one day and 2nd) the severity of the calls and situations. He related that i must be nuts to stay down there, and the more and more i think about it, I am.
The extra 15-20 min drive is starting to sound like a pleasure when the end result is not having to deal with wild beasts running amuck on the southside streets. Although i still have fun down there and i really love the group of people i work with, i've got to start thinking if the stress and general annoyance is worth it.

I have worked south for over 15 years, and granted only worked tara in the northside dist approx 12-13 times but there is no way northside police do 10 percent of what a southside or westside police do . I worked numerous sat nights in 19, 20 , 23 only handled three jobs each night and that was a busy night for them. If your young and burnt out go work north enjoy your life while young , I regret not doing it.

The "Firearmes Disposition Form" is used when you sell one of your weapons and you want it removed from your list of registered weapons. You have to go to Gun registration to obtain it, they will not mail it to you. It's another attempt by the Daley people to make purchasing a gun even harder than it already is. If the gun team comes knocking on your door,unless they have a search warrant, just say no when they ask to come in. These cowards will more than likely threaten you with all sorts of mayhem but this is still America and you don't have to let them in. I don't know what to say if they are inquiring about your hunting rifles or long guns that you keep in your cabin up north. Just remember, when they get the info from the CAGE Unit or ATF that you have purchased a long gun,they will knock your door down while serving that warrant. If you doubt me, one need look no further than the brother in law of the Policeman that works in 019. Ask him about what the A2 Gun Team did to his brother in law when they found out he was storing his long guns in his home on the northside while his cabin up north was being renovated. Don't think that you can reason with these guys because you are a Police Officer. They don't care, an arrest is an arrest no matter who is involved. It cements their spot on the team for another period and thats all that matters. Plainclothes, unmarked car, not tied down to the radio, two hour lunches, all that is worth violating someones Constitutional rights which are documented in the 2nd Amendment. It would be nice if they were taking guns away from criminals but they are not. A SUBSTANIAL amount of their arrests are middleclass otherwise law abiding citizens whose only crime is the desire to defend themslves and their families from the criminals that walk our streets. Today, look at how the police are portrayed. First, they are seen as scientists who discover "the absolute truth." There is no moral fight, because science tells the police exactly what happened. There is no fight between the police and the criminal, because once the criminal is confronted with the scientifically revealed absolute truth, he has no choice but to confess.
Otherwise, the police are seen as corrupt. The Shield, The Departed, Training Day, Bad Lieutenant, a new movie called Street Kings, all showing no difference between the police and the criminals.
On the flip side of this, we also get scores of movies glorifying gang culture and showing all gangbangers as these truely thoughtful people who have tons of talent and a dream, but society squashes this dream, and they have no choice but to shoot it out on the street. Of course, you never see them rape and strangle a 70 year old woman or beat a crying 3 year old to death.

I see all body types on this job, thin, fat, average, lean, muscular. On the whole, I think that most of the officers seem to be in decent shape, considering our screwed up schedule. If the leaders of this department were concerned at all with the health and fitness of their officers, they would foster and promote health conscious habits in every district. This includes ensuring a refrigerator that is able to hold all lunches for the watch, and a break room where officers can sit and eat in peace. They would also allow travel time to and from lunch. It is not healthy to "eat and run" which is what we are doing now; eating fast due to time constraints does not facilitate proper digestion. Also, if this department were so concerned with our fitness, they would participate in a program that would offer affordable gym memberships to police officers, and incentive to participate. These are just a few ideas to start with, of course they would cost money, which we all know the city is too busy carelessly spending somewhere else. They will never invest anymore than the bare minimum in this dept. because we are not a priority to them -- our squad cars are falling apart, the computers are constantly down, radios can't hold a charge, no pdts, and our stations are workplace hazards with enough OSHA violations to scare a health inspector away. God help this city if a disaster ever strikes; the mayor sure won't.
How about posting some pictures of reporters. I'm sure they're not all in the best of shape.

What is the story in 019 on Sat. nite when a PPO was railroaded by the brass. PPO aparently had a few beers at a party with his g-friend. At home they got into an argument where she attacked him. as a southside copper who transferred north after 10yrs, its very true what the post said about guys that have been north their entire career. There were nights in that southside district in the summer that we easily handled 20-25 calls for service. And while many may be bs disturbances u still have to go. Some lead to arrests and some dont. There were many nights that there was more than one foot chase going on simultaneously. TRR's are the norm. I mean some of these guys up north have NEVER been in a foot chase and NEVER done a TRR. I just assumed that was normal, but now have found out that it apparently isnt. Work in the ghetto and its a common occurence. The guys up north whine when they get 4-5 jobs a night and they think THAT is busy. On the southside we were literally in a backlog almost EVERY single day of the year(winter included), and that isnt an exageration. Getting denied your lunch is common, u have to settle for personals when u are in a backlog and many nights the backlog doesnt end. I havent heard the word backlog since i left. They really think that if they have to lock a guy up its big work. Again, not knocking any copper, but unless you have worked on south or west sides for more than 2-3 yrs you truly have no idea. I was amazed at the difference between north side coppers and south side. I truly never knew that existed until now. That being said i believe every copper should have to spend 5 yrs minimum on the southside, its a way to learn and when u finally have the time to transfer out u appreciate the peacefulness of another area. Im tired of hearing guys whine that have been assigned to north side districts their entire career and think they have it bad. Im not knocking anyone, but i have worked in both places and the truth is there!

Let's see....work two days a week in a firehouse with a kitchen where you can make whatever you want, no overtime, no sitting in court for hours and hours after working a midnight shift, going to a sidejob, sleep for 3 hours and then do it all over again, and having exercise equipment and a basketball net at your disposal. Not to mention all of the downtime to workout. Yea, it'd be real hard to stay in shape as a fireman.

24 hours in a firehouse with nothing to do but polish the pole and cook. They exericse all day and cook healthy meals. What do you expect? Chances of your house on fire are very slim. Chances you will be a victim of a crime very high. Next time you need help, call the fire department.

$2 Million Verdict Against Chicago Police for Gay-Bashing
Jury in Civil Suit Rules in Favor of Kentin Waits
Huge Punitive Penalty Sends Strong Message to Cops, City
Following a seven-day civil trial in federal court, a jury today found one Chicago police officer guilty of "excessive force" and another guilty of failing to intervene in the July 23, 2000 beating of a gay Chicago man, Kentin Waits.
The attack occurred in an interrogation room of the 19th District police headquarters at Belmont and Western and was a focal point for activism by the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network, a gay direct-action group, and the subject of a May 2001 report by the human rights organization Amnesty International.
Waits was awarded $15,000 in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages, as the jury sent a clear message to the Chicago Police Department as well as the two defendants that cop violence against civilians ought not be tolerated. One of the defendants, Officer Daniel Durst, was sentenced to $500,000 for beating Waits. The other defendant, Sergeant Michael Prusank, a more than 20 year veteran of the force, was fined $1,500,000 for failing to intervene to halt the assault on Waits. Waits was represented by Jon Loevy and Michael Kanovitz of the law firm Loevy and Loevy.
When asked about the settlement tonight, Waits said "I think it sends a clear message to the city, and to Chicago police officers. I am sure justice was served today."
The incident which precipitated the gay-bashing began on Saturday, July 22, 2000 when Waits was driving in the vicinity of the Chicago Cubs' Wrigley Field near game time. Waits asked an officer directing traffic if he could make a right turn, but the officer yelled obscenities at him and waved him on. Shortly thereafter, in what Waits readily admitted was "a stupid mistake," he drove back to the intersection and squirted water on the officer from a water bottle. For this incident, Waits pled guilty to misdemeanor simple battery on August 30, 2000 and was placed on supervision.
The brutal arrest and incarceration of Waits the following morning, Sunday, July 23, is what precipitated the civil lawsuit which ended yesterday in a $2 million verdict against the police. Throughout the trial several police witnesses perjured themselves by claiming that Waits' arrest and processing was "routine" and that if someone had squirted a civilian with water, they would have reacted in the same manner. Yet of the more than 100 outstanding warrants on Sergeant Prusank's desk that Sunday morning for crimes committed over the previous few days, he decided to make the arrest of Kentin Waits his tactical team's top priority. Prusank then made the rare move of requesting authorization to move his team out of their district to make the arrest, then issued an "all call" for additional officers throughout the city to join the arrest.
According to other police testimony, the tactical team travels outside of the 19th district only about once a year, and city-wide "all calls" are made only about once a week. When asked why he made the offense of squirting an officer with water his top arrest priority of the day, Officer Prusank testified that "I would have taken heat from above if I hadn't."
As Waits was being led from his home to a waiting police car, Officer Durst told him that he was "sorry about the damage to your truck." Only later did Waits learn what Durst meant by these remarks. Waits' vehicle was towed to a Police pound, "ransacked" according to the city tow record, and the transmission damaged, in an apparent act of retaliation for the previous day's altercation with the traffic cop. On the way to the station, Waits testified that he repeatedly apologized for squirting the officer the previous day, but Officer Durst threatened, "We're a big family here. If you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. Don't mess with the Chicago Police Department."
When they arrived at the station, a crowd of officers in the lobby applauded when Durst and Prusank led Waits inside. They led Waits to a 10' x 10' interrogation room which had its one window covered with newspaper, where Durst handcuffed Waits by both wrists to a railing on the wall. While a hate crime charge was the one charge for which the jury did not return a guilty verdict, Wait testified that Durst shouted "f---ing faggot" and "cocksucker" as he repeatedly slapped Waits in the face and kneed him in the groin. As Durst was taking Waits to the lock-up area, he said Waits might be raped there while he was being held over night.
"The main thing that was going through my mind was fear," said Waits. "I didn't know if the assault that had just happened was the start of something that would be going on all night. I didn't know if I'd be getting out anytime soon. I didn't know if it would escalate."
After the beating, 23 hour incarceration and damaging his truck all for simply squirting an officer with water, Waits filed a complaint with the city's Office of Professional Standards (OPS), the body charged with investigating police misconduct and making recommendations for employment-related punishments. Eight months and many unreturned phone calls later, the OPS did what it does in 95% of its cases, according to its own statistics, and found in favor of the police. Criminal charges against the police were never sought by Cook County States Attorney Dick Devine, whose office has criminally prosecuted only one Chicago police officer for physical brutality against a civilian since Devine was elected in 1996.
"As long as Mayor Richard Daley fails to fire cops who beat up gays, African Americans, Latinos and others, people like Kentin will be forced to seek redress in the courts, with occasional big settlements like this," said Andy Thayer, co-founder of the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network (CABN). "As long as States Attorney Dick Devine, the mayor's close ally, refuses to criminally prosecute brutal police, it sends a dangerous message to the rank and file that anti-gay violence is okay." Both Durst and Prusank remain employed by the Chicago Police Department, and no disciplinary action has been taken against them.
"Kentin Waits courageously stood his ground for more than two years through an investigation and trial where the defense revictimized him by attempting to put Kentin's personal life on trial," said CABN's Bob Schwartz. "By standing his ground, Kentin Waits has sent a powerful message that at least some gay people will not sit back when our community is victimized. All of us should be proud of the example he has set."
Waits' case is one of three police gay-bashing cases championed by the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network that became the basis of the first-ever Amnesty International reports about gay-bashing by police in the United States.
