- One thing is for sure, you cannot blame this on us. The media has been beating us to death, the Department is beating us to death, the politicians beat us to death, and the Mayor has beaten us to death. You collectively have killed all morale within the C.P.D. and you now have the Department you desire; report takers, not crime stoppers. Think about it, you ask for a day off only to be chastised by a supervisor for not having enough activity even though there is no quota system requiring activity. Activity can only get you into trouble. You ask for a day off and are told, “No, because there is no manpower.” The Lodge won the FLSA lawsuit against the City, which would eliminate that problem, and what does the Department and City do? They appeal the decision.
Greg hits so many of the points that we and dozens of our commentators have been making for some time now that we might suspect Greg is an avid reader of the site. We just hope people are paying attention.

On hot days, I even let them take some ice from my beer cooler inside my unmarked take-home-car with M plates! And I let them find my squad after a night of drinking and I can't remember where I parked it!
I can go on and on! But you get the point. You take care of your officers and they take care of you!

My only problem with Greg Bella’s rant in the FOP Newsletter is when he talks about the work schedule. I believe he said something to the effect of “the Lodge has actively asked for a new work schedule”.
Really?
What has the Lodge done? They have not asked me, my district, my watch, or any of my friends in other districts, and on other watches. The Lodge has come up with the idea of six days on and then three days off.
My only questions to that is – where or who did you talk to? How did you come up with that schedule???
Anyone I know, and I mean ANYONE and EVERYONE I know on this job does not care for the sixth work day. It has to go.
Greg, I am very glad you like to rant, and in fact, I love that you do it. At least somebody in the Lodge has a pulse. Please, in the future though – do a better job in talking to the membership about things before you go off on one of your rants and loose any amount of credibility that you have.

why all of the sudden are they showing a bit of balls? For a union historically known to pander to management and remain quiet on all fronts, why is this coming out now? This is the attitude that should be displayed by ALL FOP personnel at all times. This union has never acted in a "Hoffa" style support of it's members, but rather keeps more concerned with it's own well being and selectively picking the minor battles it thinks it can win.

When I was a PPO on midnights and did nt know nothing there was one thing I did know. Bella had the balls of a bison and he shows it with some of his straight from the hip to the point comments in his position with the fop 16 years later.
Thanks G for guiding me in the right direction when I was new 16 years ago and thanks for sticking up for the working men and women of this great department who day in and day out do the right thing because of the work ethic that we all have instilled in us.
We all work for a great police department and in a great city. No matter what some bosses say to try to drag us down, no matter what the media says that usually is not accurate and no matter what some moronic citizens say to us and on tv.
I will take one smile from a kid or a high five or a hand shake from a 5 year old and that is the reason we all do it.

This guy is Deputy Chief James Keating. Let me give you a run down of his career. He spent one year as a patrolmen. He was with the tac team for 2 years, then he was placed with mayor daley's body guard unit, from there he made sergeant. He never took the test he was a merit promotion. Merit with this guy goes along way. Keep reading...... He went back to the mayor's bodyguard unit as commander . If we stop and think about back then. what were the circumstances that brought him there. Mayor daley's other bodyguard commander got caught up with suppling the city with a security firm until the feds looked into his business. Back to James Keating good old buddy of mayor daley. He spent time over the park district detail, the cities rapid response unit, and the 001 district as well. From there he made his biggest jump to Deputy superintendent. All this with no college degree. No back ground in mangement. The only thing he has going for himself, is he's Mayor daley's buddy. News investigators theres a story here to be told. If you like selling papers give me credit for doing the research into this. J-Fed seems as if your not doing your job. Otherwise you would have removed him too when you cleaned house. But why would you remove a guy thats friends with mayor daley, when your friends with Bill Daley. J-Fed I wonder how you got your job. The plot thickens. Mayor daley's web keeps coming unraveled.

Our Superintendent and our union work together in some ways, and in others, maybe not so much. The two parties can have the exact same goals sometimes. And, if the FOP helps the Sup in carrying out some of his missions, then he may be willing to help them carry out some of their own, right?
Consider these questions:
Why has our FOP added a fitness article in their newsletter?
A coincidence this is a top concern for our new Sup?
The FOP doesn't lose anything in adding this article to assist the Sup in his mission of helping us be healthy. In fact, the article could save some of our lives with its health/fitness advice, specially suited to our needs.
Secondly, everyone knows morale is low. The new Sup knows this. So does the FOP. It is a MAJOR problem. It wouldn't hurt anything for Bella to get some MAJOR discussion going on the topic. If anything, maybe some of us will come up with some real solutions. Let's see where this goes...where WE take it...

really?.. i work in 008 and on third watch they handed out a survey with different options for work schedules and it gave examples of each schedule. i have talked to a few other people in district and they got the same thing...

Because the membership has finally figured out that THEY have to take the action/inaction to support what they want.
And the 'leadership' is beginning to figure out that the membership is willing to do/not do whatever it takes.
Union or Fraternal Order, whatever you want to call it, means the same thing: substantial unity = power.

Don't forget the Capt. E.V. was a commander in TRU. ole J-fed dumped his ass with out even knowing anything about him. Great command staff you picked moron. Capt. E.V. took the high road he could of been bitter and treated everyone badly but then again thats not what a stand up guy does. Capt. E.V. is a great boss but even better person. You are missed in TRU.

My only problem with Greg Bella’s rant in the FOP Newsletter is when he talks about the work schedule. I believe he said something to the effect of “the Lodge has actively asked for a new work schedule”.
Really?
What has the Lodge done? They have not asked me, my district, my watch, or any of my friends in other districts, and on other watches. The Lodge has come up with the idea of six days on and then three days off.
My only questions to that is – where or who did you talk to? How did you come up with that schedule???
Anyone I know, and I mean ANYONE and EVERYONE I know on this job does not care for the sixth work day. It has to go.
Greg, I am very glad you like to rant, and in fact, I love that you do it. At least somebody in the Lodge has a pulse. Please, in the future though – do a better job in talking to the membership about things before you go off on one of your rants and loose any amount of credibility that you have.

The schedule of 4 on and 2 off is also being discussed. It is the same days worked per year as 6 and 3. Both would require some "adjustment" as they give officers around 17 extra days off a year. You know the city is just not going to give us a gift of 17 more days off so there would have to be some give backs. The city doesn't want to hire extra police to do it. If the FOP files for arbitration you can forget any alternative work schedule.

Hahahah the more they keep dumping into my district the more my seniority keeps going up. Just axe TRU and start all over, it was an experiment gone bad. It started off with good intentions but after the 7 cars eating at Beggars Pizza for 2 hours it needs to redone.
You are in for a surprise, it will probably go down, but you'll see.

Yes you and people like you should leave because you have no clue as to what you are doing. As for the rest of you keep smiling and cashing the checks.Only the connected have not been screwed on this job and had the wind taken out of their sails. So what? That is life. I make a nice living doing as little or as much as i care to. I have a great family ,friends and partners own 2 houses a boat, 3 cars take great vacations and put my kids thru good schools and I will collect 75% of my pay to stay home when i leave.I have these things because I decided to.I make sure to have fun at work every day and do what is good for me. My partners and i have a blast. What do we care about Jodi or Abatti or da mayor it really means nothing in the long run you all end up in the same place. I make sure i eat in good places and talk to at least one pretty girl a day.
I knew when i came on 25 years ago this city is run by thieves you don't have to be one you just have to make the job work for you always has been the key to this job always will be.If your sick use the medical. If the supervisor screws you over use the medical. Supervisor is an ahole no numbers for you ahole.You gotta let em know where you stand on this job, and believe me the chickenshits that run this coop will move on to an easy target and leave you alone.

I’m sure he has many good points but I’m not a fan. I was let down and hung out to dry. It was such a bumbled mess I almost had to file a grievance about my grievance.

Wrong. Survey was not conducted by FOP. Done as part of a Research Project.

If Capt. Eli pulled your ass over, you were fucking up. Period. At least let it go; obviously, he didn't do what he could have done to you, and you probably had it coming if you have the nerve to bring it up on this blog. Most coppers who have been pulled over off duty by a BOSS would never speak about it to anyone; most bosses would turn their head and act like they didn't see you out there driving like a complete asshole. He probably saved your life. Asshat.
