Real Police?
Anyone mouthing off about suburban guys and gals (or the state) not being the real police, read this:
- One man is hospitalized with a gunshot wound and another is in police custody after police interrupted a home invasion in west suburban Franklin Park on Tuesday morning.
- As the two suspects fled, they fired shots at two responding officers, who returned fire, striking one of the suspects in the head, according to police. The other suspect was captured. Neither officer was injured.
Glad to see no cops got hurt. Too bad the shithead lived, but you can't have everything. But this really ought to put to rest any BS about who is and isn't "real" police. Good job officers.

I've worked both city and burbs. Some of the burbs are as bad as anything west or south. The only ones talking that real police crap are usually the ones who aren't anyway. Not to mention the burbs are generally better and more contunuously trained than we are and have access to much better equipment. Guess what, they can actually run a CQH from their cars while only our dicks can. Who's the real police now?

If you added all the police shootings by the NYPD, LAPD, CPD and multiplied by 2 then compared that the rest of the Nations Police Shootings you would probably find that more shootings happen in smaller juridictions than in the large cities.
We are all police officers. The job is the same everywhere you go. Different juridictions have different problems- different solutions. You think chicago is bad politically? Talk to the smaller suburban guys they will all say if the Chief dont like you its midnights for the length of his tenure.
I'm CPD, but I have to tell ya... I know several suburban officers, and from what I've seen, they are every bit the 'real police' that CPD is... or ... was.... you see, they have a professional department that backs them, and have politicians that back them.... they have better training, better equipment, TOUGHER HIRING STANDARDS, and are more professional all around....
If it had happened in chicago the corp. consel would have already offering a cash settlement to the bad guy.
The real police are any guy or gal who puts that badge, star, or shield on their chest and straps that gun to their side, gets in a squad car and puts their life on the line for a group of unappreciative citizens that would hang them with the first mistake they make. This is true everywhere. Our job as Chicago Police officers is no more dangerous than that of our brothers and sister working in the suburbs. We all know shit could hit the fan just as quick, no matter where you are a police officer. That’s why I am sick and tired of listening to 2 year wonders state if you don’t work in the ghetto you are not the real police! BULLSHIT!!!

Ive been on CPD for almost 27 years now, and have relatives and friends on both the Cook County Sheriffs police and a couple of suburban departments. Folks they may be smaller in size, but per capita they are better trained and equipped than we are! they also can live WHEREVER the hell they want and in most case now are making the same if not BETTER money then CPD. I see the light at the end of the tunnel, about 2 years to go for me. To the rest of you, get out now before lil Richie and his puppet J-Fed really drive this dept into the ground.

My beat boarders about five different suburbs.I come in contact with their POLICE all the time.When I call for an assist they are always there. And they're friendly.I especially like Park Ridge and their assault rifles.
I too read the crap about "real" police being CPD and tha rest pretenders. I was a suburban cop for 6 years prior to coming to Chicago. Those suburban cops earn their money! Every agency has their melon heads, but the work load is similar and the working coppers, the 10-20% who do all the work in every agency, have just as many hairy war stories as any ghetto cop in Chicago. Volume is probably the biggest difference.

Not the real police? Look at the tom foolery that goes on with city cops. The suburb bosses would not put up with it. City cops lack the professional appearance of the suburban depts.

Why did you even start this topic SCC. It's stupid and always ends with a bunch of post saying how tough the burbs have it. Today there are no "real police". CPD is bing reduced to report writers and the burbs already have dash mounted cameras. The "real police" thing is dead. Too many P.O.'s are worried about cameras and media to be the "real police".

Listen, i agree that the police is the police no matter where you go. But to say that a lot of what these suburbs deal with is equivalent to what we deal with is ludicrous. I respond to AT LEAST one shots fired call every single tour, usually a few a tour. How many times to these suburbs, and even north side districts respond to stuff like this? And a shit load of them are bonified. I mean no disrespect, and feel any policeman working anywhere is doing God's work, but our level of danger each tour is heads and tails above any suburb.

Yes they probably get more ammo for range time and better cars and anything else you want to gripe about....But on the average these agencies have under 80 officer compared to thousands... Great job Franklin Park, glad the officers are ok...
Hmm.. Not really off topic but I saw 2 State Police doing a traffic stop at 67 and King last night. They were both searching the car while the 2 suspects stood outside behind the car with hands on the trunk, not cuffed. They said they're fine... Rolled along...

It doesn't mean they don't know how to be the police. It sickens me when I see you cocky know it all idiots claim that your the "real police" only because your CPD or work in a fast dist. Grow up! If you have to ask who the REAL police are, you're NOT one of them.
I have had many interactions with the state police and suburban police. I give them credit for what they do. Most of them work 10-99 and handle the same jobs we do. They are the police. Kudos to them and thank God that all officers went home to their families.
Most of the time suburban guys who actually do the job, know that the knuckleheads in CPD that brag about themselves being the real police have probably never gotten out of the squad car. Most suburban guys also know and respect most CPD guys and think the respect is mutual. Ever department has its suckholes and ever department has its workers. Congrats to FPPD and thank God no coppers were hurt.

Not everything is reported in the news you idiot. Real police my ass. Try responding to a call and you backup is far away or you only have two one officer cars to assist you. Suburban officers must learn to handle jobs without the excessive manpower we have. They also process their own arrests including the lockup. You would not survivie in a suburban department. Now replace the hairgel and get a life.

Franklin park recruits are trained by CPD academy. Several young officers at the scene of the shooting. They were trained to respond and accomplish the mission. No a bad job.
If you use the term "the real police" and mean it---especially in reference to yourself, you are a stroke.
CPD is no longer a police department. It is a secretarial pool.

I know how you feel, I was given a break back in '01 by a Trooper near Kankakee on 57. I wish I could repay the man somehow, african american guy. Still have the warning. Initials J.G.? can't read it. Point is I'll never forget it. And the only way I can repay them is assist them on every t stop I happen to see them doing. How many of us watch their t stops off duty as we are driving past? I do every time. Point is: black, white, hispanic, whatever... we are all in the same field.
I will never put down a suburban or small town PD because some of those guys go through the same or worse shit that we do and they do it 99. I got stopped in the middle of Montana by a State Trooper who rode by himself, his nearest backup was a half hour away at least and the nearest town is 30 miles.
My backup is minutes away, in a flash a dozen beat cars come to my aid, a wagon, tact etc. I wouldn't want to work in the middle of no where alone.
Blue is blue, suburbs, small towns, medium cities, State Patrol, Border or Customs, we all get hurt, shot at and have families we want to go home to. Enough of the real police shit.

hats off to these two franklin park officers. as soon as they went in upon hearing a shot fired in the home the bad guy opened fire on them across the living room. bad guy was shot not once, not twice, but three times and no officers hurt. let me tell you everyone thought the bad guy was dead till ems arrived. other bad guy arrested immediately. franklin park is hardly what one would consider a burb. in a small area they sure got a lot of shit. whether its the hookers, shootings, stabbings, they get to see it all. great job guys.
As a Detective, I have always had nothing but the utmost respect for other Departments. Their guys/gals have always been helpful with an assist of any kind. Unlike our own department (CPD) where u have to fight some ignorant desk puke for some xerox paper. Good Job by the FPP in this shooting. Stay safe all.

Stop and get out of your car. Many times I think that guys give the thumbs up for the macho thing...we can handle this...stop get out, stand there and watch, let the guys who made the stop search the car while you watch the bad guys. Your comment has merit but you need to keep in mind that there is a reason why our backup is seconds or minutes away as opposed to them, we are in a densely populated urban area, much more violent on a regular basis, as opposed to them on the highway with a transit population, not downplaying their worth or signifigance, it is what it is, same with the burbs. It is comparing apples to oranges, they see the same stuff big cities do but on a much less basis.... kudos to FPPD, great job, the training kicked in and all are safe.

The lesson here should be to make sure that EMS checks everyone else out before they get near the bad guy.

We must resist the urge to abandon our comrades who make what more experienced officers would refer to as "poor officer safety decisions." We have ALL been guilty of leaving a situation that appears "cool", but has the potential to escalate into a fatality on our side. Stop, fuck off with them for a while, and offer them a HUMBLE bit of advice. I have found that something like the following could work. "Be careful with these assholes around here when searching a car. They are known to try to jump the police from behind sometimes. If you got some extra heads, and want us to roll by, this is our beat, and we will be here all night." This sounds less like admonishing them, or calling them stupid(which they very well may be). This way, you also leave them with respect for there work, without belittling them.
Just think how you would feel if you heard that they had gotten hurt!
